y friend, Her Excellency, Ms. Uduak Umondak, and I were guests of Professor Dapo Ashiru and his lovely wife, Idowu, at their modern Mayr Medical Spa at Shonibare Estate, Ikeja. It is an experience I intend to repeat again and again.

The concept of medical spa is novel in Nigeria; even more novel is the modern Mayr method. There are only three of such in the world, one in Austria home of the creator of the technique, the second in the United States, while the third is located under our nose, at Shonibare Estate.

What is so unique about the Mayr method is the way it incorporates total body wellness with orthodox medical therapy. From the minute you walk through the door, you enter into a surreal world, where you are pampered and fussed over till you forget the world outside and become subsumed in the pleasures that unfold. All these await you the minute you surrender your bag to be taken up to a luxurious room that is your abode for the next ten days.

Time did not permit us to spend more than four days; days when my intestines were gently massaged in, making my tummy flatter than I had ever known it to be, sit-ups, crunches irrespective. Four memorable days of detox, and learning again to chew food the way God originally intended.

They were days we learnt cooking the Mayr way, which is much healthier; got an Assyria medical analysis to detect if there is or are any onset of disease. The idea of the Assyria is that, before diseases manifest, they start from somewhere. With the Assyria, it can be detected and treated before it manifests.

In the end, I came out 5 kilos lighter, feeling spruced and squeaky clean. You can imagine my excitement. I had to get this out.

In this interview, the couple explain the Mayr method and why they brought it to Nigeria. The spa opens formally today.

rofessor Oladapo Ashiru and his beautiful wife, Idowu, are ahead of their time. The professor's medical practice which incorporates modern Mayr therapy is light years ahead of others in Nigeria. Rather than wait for patients to fall sick and be rushed in for treatment, Prof. Ashiru offers proactive medicine, which eliminates the trigger factors that precipitate disease.

Having experienced the spa services the couple offer, I can vouch for their ability to de-stress, detox and relax clients while also inducing weight loss in a body-friendly manner. With incidence of stress high in Nigeria, the spa opening today couldn't have come at a better time.

WHAT IS THE MART -LIFEDETOX CLINIC ALL ABOUT? Mart- Life Detox Clinic is a medical spa established as an arm of the fertility centre we established many years ago. Its main focus is the use of modern Mayr medicine therapy.

Modern Mayr medicine therapy was established over a hundred years ago by Dr. F. S. Mayr, who practiced in Austria. During the First World War, he discovered that there are ways to address illness apart from the typical orthodox medicine that he was trained to use. He added this as a welcome addition to his therapy.

Basically, modern Mayr medicine looks at the individual from the skin, to the eyes and abdomen especially the abdomen. It is able to recognise illnesses that an individual may have. This, of course, is based on the fact that you are what you eat essentially. You are also a product of what you take from the environment. These two components can have negative or positive effect on the way you feel.

Having seen this method in Austria, we decided to have a collaborative arrangement with them. This medical centre essentially ensures well being and reproductive health; we deal with endocrine problems, diabetes and so many other ailments which are addressed through this holistic approach to medicine in addition to normal orthodox medicine.

THIS HOLISTIC APPROACH IS NOT ALONG THE LINES OF NORMAL TREATMENT? It is out of my sphere of normal treatment. First of all, my field of specialty is Reproductive Endocrinology, which is what I have been doing over the last thirty years. I look at the endocrine organ as they affect reproduction in men and women. When we started invitro-fertilisation, some people experienced unexplained fertility. As we advanced technologically, we were able to help such people through the use of retrovitisation. Now, this technique has come to stay.

Now you find that when some people go through invitro- fertilisation, they go through it 3 or 4 times and don't get pregnant. A few fertility centres now recognise the fact that there is more to fertility than just doing IVF. Even when you put the embryo back into the womb, if there are problems in the woman, either through diet or through some toxin in her, she will not be able to carry that baby.

We realised that there is need to remove toxins or detoxify people before they go t h ro u g h i nv i t ro -

fertilisation. When people go through this process of detoxification, it enhances the efficiency of all their organs: the heart, the kidney and, in particular, the reproductive organs of both males and females.

Recognising this made me to establish this centre in order to help patients who are obese and want fertility treatment so that when they lose weight, it will enhance their chances or, in the same vein, make ordinary people who just want to be healthy live a healthy life. Modern Mayr medicine means a completely new type of living, a new way of eating and a new approach to adding good rhythm to your health.

AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF YOUR THERAPY IS THE WAY WE EAT. LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT. With Mayr modern medicine, one of our priorities is the way we eat. Man was created to eat in order to grow. The first thing we learnt to eat was the milk from the mother's breast; we sucked it and drank it. As we grew older, we were made to chew. We were given teeth so that we can chew food and ground it properly, mix it with saliva so that by the time it gets into the stomach, it's almost in liquid form ready to be digested.

But as we advanced with technology, we all (even those who went to medical school) chewed what we can and swallowed thinking that the stomach will do the rest of the chewing and the grinding. The stomach does not do that and there is no other organ in the body aside from the oral cavity that can chew food so, when it goes down into the stomach and the intestine, it goes in that solid or a bit solid form. It is unusable by the body and ends up congesting the intestine. It is like getting solid things into the drain instead of putting them into the waste bin; empty them into the gutter and they end up blocking the gutter and causing the drainage to be blocked.

Therefore, the first thing we teach people here is to re-learn the gift of chewing to chew our food properly, that is, chewing food many times (up to fifty or sixty times, depending on the type of food you are eating). Obviously, if you have ogi (pap) in your mouth, you will just chew a little bit so that saliva can mix with it and begin to digest it, to break it down into small bits; whereas, if it's chicken or meat, you have to chew it many times before you can get the same thing to almost liquid form before you swallow.

ONE OF THE CARDINAL PLANKS OF THIS THERAPY IS REGENERATION AND YOUTH RESTORATION. HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THIS? When you take a break from over-eating and reduce your calorie intake and

you start eating food that are non- toxic, automatically, your whole system will be rejuvenated. The Mayr system of cooking is such that most toxins are eliminated from the cooking process. But it is not just about removing toxins, we also believe that in the same process, you should not put in more toxins into your system.

We talk about different levels of diet; that is why each person's treatment is customised and obviously, it is not one treatment for all. When anybody comes in, we have initial consultation with the doctor and based on what they find out, a particular diet will be prescribed for him or her. A lot of women may want to lose weight. We put them on very strict diet. Whatever the case, we do detox and that will definitely lead to cell rejuvenation so patients will look much younger and very much refreshed by the time they finish the programme.

GIVE ME A LOW-DOWN ON THE SYSTEM HERE. They are actually called cleansing diet, so there is a cleansing diet; there is a mild cleansing diet and then there is a moderate cleansing diet. We call it 01 and 02.

Beyond that, there is also diet for specific problems; people who have maybe lactose intolerance, or people who have Candida of the intestine, for instance, go on a special diet. In terms of what the operations here, first is the simplification which is the way of eating and rest; that is number one. Number two is that we examine you and we have different things to check. First is the physical examination that measures changes in the abdomen, the weight and blood pressure. Next is the Assyria text which is a new field in medical diagnosis that uses magnetic resonance to recognise changes in the body, therefore, highlighting areas with a problem.

We can also reinforce that in what we call applied kinesiology, which is based on the fact that muscles will react to different regions based on what they are and if a particular region is effective; you test the muscles that are in relation to those regions. If you don't like a particular food and I put it on your stomach and I test your muscle, you will be weak because you don't like the food. That is the physical bearing of applied kinesiology.

The next one we do is having recognised all these problems, we place you on a customised diet. The next important aspect of modern Mayr is abdominal treatment, where we are able to manipulate the abdomen and anatomically try to move them back to the anatomical position. Because having eaten wrongly for a long time, the abdomen becomes bloated and congested; it is big and full so we have to manipulate it.

But you cannot manipulate the abdomen until you have been able to clean the abdomen itself by drinking oral salt and powder which are custom-made for Mart light detox.

When you drink this solution, you will go to the toilet and eliminate the bowel and also urinate. You will also drink mineral stone water and herbal teas to replace the toxic water and fluid. In that situation, your stomach is now ready to be manipulated into its anatomical position.

Next, we have what we call therapeutic measures. One of them is the massage by the physiotherapist, when we do lymphatic massage to drain the lymphatic vessels and improve lymphatic circulation. Once this is done, the toxins will be encouraged to move into the dustbin so that they can be eliminated. We have a whole range of services, but time will not permit me to say them all.

MADAM, YOU WENT TO THE MAYA SPA IN AUSTRIA BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO LOSE WEIGHT. WERE YOU THAT BIG? When you get there, they will actually tell you that their whole focus is not really to lose weight. Their whole focus is detox. When I got there, I will say I didn't lose much weight because I discovered that I had a thyroid problem, which was why I didn't lose weight. I was gaining more weight, even when I was only eating salad. I don't eat bread. I don't eat any of these carbohydrates. So, why was I putting on weight? When they discovered this, they started treating that. That was why I didn't lose weight. When I got back and stayed with the programme, both in terms of cooking and their way of eating, the weight started coming off gradually.

HOW DO YOU THINK NIGERIANS WILL

People are allergic to different things. There are people who are allergic to nuts, either peanut, or different things like aged product like wine, champagne, cheese.

I am allergic to champagne but didn't realise it. I had a cough for five months; I didn't know what it was. I kept coughing. He gave me some very powerful vitamins but when I went to Austria, they did a test and diagnosed that I was allergic to champagne. I knew that champagne didn't really agree with me but I liked champagne but champagne didn't like me.

WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE'S FOOD ALLERGIES ONCE THEY COME IN HERE. There are two ways in which we can do that: applied kinesiology and the Assyrian test.

KNOWING THE WAY NIGERIANS ARE, HOW DO YOU THINK THEY WILL BE ATTRACTED TO THIS KIND OF PLACE? You have a new life if you go through here. For ten to fourteen days, your life will change. Your way of doing things will change, particularly your manner of eating. And why? Doctor Mayr, the originator of this technique wanted it for two weeks minimum because when you practise something for two weeks, it is recognised psychologically that it has become part of you.

But when you do it for two or three days, you can easily go back.

In terms of how Nigerians will receive it, in my own practise, I know that a number of my patients need it. Why? Because they have infertility problems. While some are very fat, for the men, sperm count is low or not there. How will it be there when fat is blocking the blood vessel that leads into the testes.

Apart from that, it is what they eat that created Professor Oladapo and Mrs. Idowu Ashiru the fat that led to load of toxins that have damaged most of these organs. So, if you put them through a process like this, they will know using to treat menopause all the hormone replacement like pre-marine, testogine and so on were making women to put on weight whereas the use of that they need it and they will get better. One of my patients who had infertility biodelical products helped women to handle menopause without putting on problems even before we had this residential programme, after taking her through detoxification process before treating her for IVS, she ended up with weight.

But weight will be added on in Nigeria because of our various social activities. Baby Don't Be Like That!

T

his was the most embarrassing thing Zinna had heard in a long time. We were both by the baggage carousel at the Atlanta airport, waiting for our baggage to come through.

Zinna my cute looking travelling companion, emitted a low fart, and the stench... ugh. We heard a deep chuckle from behind us, and a voice in a black American twang say, ‘baby don’t be like that’. When we turned, to our horror, we saw a cool looking black guy staring directly at her. He then gave her a funny look and took off...fast. I too moved away for a bit. It was that embarrassing.

As soon as we retrieved our luggage and left the building, my dear friend spat on the ground.

In other words, in the space of fifteen minutes,, she had twice displaced a serous lapse of manners. Oh dear!

And then, when our cab driver loaded her luggage into the cab, she didn’t even thank him.

When I reminded her to do so, her response - it’s his job after all I’m paying him. In public, she would speak so loudly and sound very aggressive. That was so not right. Needless to say, I was appalled and thoroughly ashamed of her.

The thing about manners is that they are an intrinsic part of you. You take them along with you wherever you go-China, UK, or your very own village. If you’re used to acting ‘funny’ at home, you will surely display those funny habits wherever you go.

Manners are all about consideration for

others, about obeying the golden rule-do unto others what you want done to you. Say ‘please’, ‘thank you’, and ‘sorry’ at any opportunity you’ve got. Each time you display great manners you make deposits into your social account. Be kind and caring to people. That cab driver that takes you from one end of town to the other deserves a thank you. When you patronise that fast food joint or restaurant, the server or waiter deserves your thanks. That office assistant that you regularly send out for food, snacks and recharge cards deserves a thank you. And what about your laundry man, house help, vendor and that gateman or meguard that opens the gate for you? A thank you will not go amiss. And it’s not enough to just say thank you. Say it with a warm smile.

A few weeks ago, I was at a client’s reception, waiting for him. Another young guy was also waiting for this same client. While waiting, he was happily picking his nose, and when my client saw him, he gave him a hearty handshake. Oh dear! If only Mr. Client knew where those fingers had been...nasty.

Only yesterday, I saw a ‘together’ looking guy alight from his posh vehicle to pee by the roadside. There was a fast food joint close by where he could have gone to do his ‘business’.

Your manners speak for you. With beautiful manners people enjoy being around you. With appalling manners, somebody someday ‘s bound to say ‘baby, don’t be like that ‘

I wish I had written to you when it first crossed my mind to do so. I am in a dilemma which has turned my life upside down.

I got married 5 years ago and now, I wonder why I did. After my traditional marriage, my husband used his contacts to get me a good job. I remember he told me to lie during the interview that I was single so I could get the job, which I did.

When I got pregnant, he asked me to abort the pregnancy, our first, so that I won't lose my job, which I also did.

When I first met him, he said he was into business with a group of friends. I remember that he was able to pay for certain things. He even had an apartment that we moved into and live in till now.

But, no sooner were we married that I realised he had to travel a lot, especially to a certain part of the country, telling me he and his friends were bidding for contracts.

He would go for three months and come home for a few days and off he went again.

Later, I realised that when he comes home, he wasn't really interested in sex anymore; saying that he was tired and hardly ever had erections. I found out later that this was due to the fact that he no longer found me attractive so, he wasn't stimulated by my presence. I also observed that I was the one who was now paying the rent and giving him money, sometimes, to travel back.

Things kept getting worse between us and I kept hoping that something will happen; like hitting a good contract that will make him happy enough for him to see me fully in his life again, but I was wrong.

When I realised that I didn't know what was happening in his life, I resorted to look at his phone.

To my greatest surprise, I discovered that this man had been having affairs behind my back. When I confronted him, he showed no remorse. Instead, he felt relieved that since I have found out, he no longer needed to talk secretly to anyone. He began to pick calls from strange women right in front of me.

As time passed by, I found out that he had a particular lady, who is older than him, with whom he lives with when he travels. I confronted him about her and threatened to leave if he continued with her but he only made it clear that she is helping him with so many things and it will be difficult to pull out.

At this time, I was going through hell at work with my boss and some colleagues who have been chasing me because they sincerely believe I am single. As I write this to you, I want you to know that I have never defiled myself with any of these men because I am disgusted by the fact that they are all married and yet keep coming at other women, the very same thing my husband is doing.

Recently, my husband took ill during one of his visits. We had to go to the hospital together where tests were carried out on him. He was found to be HIV-positive. Immediately, same tests were carried out on me and the results were negative.

It's been nine months now and I have run the same tests over and over in different places, yet still negative. I am very grateful for this. Now, I know that all the while I was agonising that my husband wasn't having sexual relations with me, God was turning it around for my good. He has begged me not to tell any member of both families but never apologised for the situation.

Now, my problem is the man who was not interested in sleeping with me before now has suddenly developed interest in us having sex and when I refuse, he boasts that the elderly lady he lives with on those 'contract' trips knows that he is HIVpositive yet has sex with him using condoms; how much more me his wife.

Jerome, I am so confused and believe I have wasted my life in a marriage that never was. Do you know that my husband and I can't have a conversation without it degenerating into arguments? So, I have learnt to have him do all the talking while I do the listening and discovered that he likes it that way. I am afraid for my life now as he is becoming more aggressive about sex. You have really been phlegmatic in your relationship with your husband and, like so many women who are like you, kept so much in the dark for too long.

It's a pity that women who have been under attack for several decades still choose to remain under attack till now.

Pick up your phone right now and tell your people all about it. Find a place to stay for now. There is no reason to empathise with your husband now. He is yet to show remorse. I hope he gets to that point but for now, he certainly is not there yet.

t was an evening of sophistication and glamour as the city of Lagos played host to one of the brightest stars of Bayelsa State, Timi Alaibe. The former NDDC Managing Director and politician turned 50 and marked the milestone age with a big dinner party at the Harbour Point, Victoria Island. Sumptuous three course meals, champagne, fine wine and desserts were available to guests as they took their seats while entertainment came from the stables of Iyanya, P-square and the Kokomaster himself, Dbanj. The highlight of the evening though was a fantastic medley of the celebrant's favourite songs by his kids. They really brought the house down prompting a standing ovation from the guests.

Home made mane management

By AYODELE DAVINA Use these simple potions to solve hair issues at home without a salon bill.

FOR DANDRUFF

n Get a jar of coconut oil and massage scalp with it from time to time. n Mix coconut oil with lemon juice and olive oil, part your hair into sections and apply the mixture directly to the scalp.

Use a steam cap or just wrap your hair with a towel. Wash off with a mild shampoo after 15 minutes.

Rinse out your hair with vinegar in water n once in a while. This will give your hair body and shine.

Mix up 1 egg white n 2 tbsp of castor oil 1tbsp of glycerin Apply this nourishing mix to your hair and scalp and wrap it up in a towel for a while and rinse off with tepid water.

DO NOT rub your hair vigorously with a n towel when drying. This causes breakage. Always pat it dry gently.
