veryone will agree that the face of fashion has changed for good. Nigeria's fashion industry has passed its teething years and is now heading to Eldorado. Our beloved Nigeria is now Africa's fashion capital! But, this didn't happen like a big bang. Rather, it is so today because certain individuals did something at a point for the industry that has slowly but surely brought us to the oohs and aahs today! I speak of the thirty Nigerian celebs featured on our cover; people, who over the years and at different times, contributed to the growth and new dimensions in the industry. or those who were around in the sixties, the name “Shade's Boutique” should ring a bell as she was one woman who believed in the future of local Nigerian fabrics at the height of Western fashion influence. Her boutique was the go-to spot for both men and women whose fashion tastes were way ahead of their time. She revolutionized the iro and buba and adapted what we now know as boubous from the men's agbada. These days she still plays an active role in fashion offering advice to younger designers and helping them with direction as far designs and trends are concerned. She has really seen it all and has much wisdom to impart to newer generations. She has been conferred with many lifetime achievement awards and recognitions for the strong part she play in the fashion history of this country.

ver the last decade, Fashion in Nigeria as we know it, has grown in leaps, in bounds and the industry has expanded to accommodate creative professionals aside from designers. Stylists, runners, creative directors, fashion photographers, makeup artists, bloggers etc are just some of the dividends of this boom. Nowadays it is very commonplace to turn one's head left or right and count 10 up and coming designers in either direction, making waves and building a strong clientele base. But to cast one's mind back further than the decade, this wasn't the case as it was not considered a 'steady' profession especially for those who had received a formal tertiary education. This list is the product of painstaking effort led by Allure's Latasha Ngwube, Yemisi Suleiman and correspondent Fatima Garba, to honour those who really carved out the road to sartorial bliss that we are enjoying today. Some people as early as the sixties had started the game and fined tuned it to

he very prominent fashion house “Labanella” is owned by none other than the majestic Abah Folawiyo and was set up in 1981. She started the trend of combining African prints with brocade. She is one of the designers responsible for the transition of this trend from the local to the international scene. Abah also founded FADAN to help protect and encourage designers who were yet to come. Little did she know that today she would be regarded as one of the first of her time. Till this day she is still considered one of the grand matriarchs of fashion in this country. Her sense of style has not waivered either as she has maintained her signature look over the years without fail.

luremi Osholake better known by her b ra n d n a m e re d e f i n e d v i s u a l merchandising and brand development as far back as twenty five years ago. Remi has always had the reputation of being reserved allowing only close friends into her inner sanctum. Over the years she has enjoyed a cult following among the fashion faithful who can't get enough of her sexy, uber feminine outfits. Today her stores are located in very choice locations around the Lagos metropolis as well as in other cities. Her trademark look of head to toe black has not faltered over the years either and running into the introverted designer is a rare yet pleasant occurrence.

er mom used to be a fabric merchant and she used to help out, and through that she learnt a lot. After leaving the corporate world in the early 80's (1984), she left to go the UK to study fashion designing. She came back to Nigeria in 1985 a year after her training and started her fashion houseSupreme Stitches at a 3-Bedroom apartment in Surulere, Lagos and a year after establishing the company, she emerged as the best Designer in the country in 1986. For over 15 years, the label creatively explored the use of local fabrics including aso-oke and ankara alongside foreign fabrics chiffon, taffeta and silk. As the long-serving President of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN) for over six years, she worked tirelessly to educate and encourage the new generation of Nigerian fashion designers.

HE NIGERIAN FASHION INDUSTRY the point where we are today lending credence to their various professions and paving the way for many of the young and successful names in the fashion industry today. We are not saying that these 30 alone are responsible for the formation and growth of the fashion industry but they have played very critical, pioneering and influential roles in shaping the industry to what it has become and is fast becoming and for that we sincerely applaud them. Today, internationally and continentally Nigeria is on the map, dressing international celebrities, gracing slick foreign fashion editorials, walking on catwalks that were a dream barely 8 years ago. For those who are from the old school, this should be a nice refresher while many of the younger fashion pundits, fashionistas and aficionados should learn a thing or two about those who made it possible to be globally fashionable in Nigeria!
Deola Sagoe

eola Sagoe is a fashion visionary with a unique approach to her craft, she has been honored through the years with numerous awards and accolades. Deola is a haute couture designer from Ondo state. She has been designing since 1989 till date and has gained international fame and exposure for her lively and colourful designs. She has represented Nigerian fashion in so many campaign shows such as United Nations world food program, Catwalk the world: Fashion for food. If you asked the average person today their top three designers, nine out of ten times, she would probably top their list. There is a reason why she is known as the queen of couture in Africa, she is just that good. Her designs have been superior for years, even before Nigerians started to fully understand and appreciate the labour, cost and detailing of couture, she was doing her thing. Waiting for the continent to catch up with her and that's why today she is still at the top of her game. Deola she has indeed taken Nigeria to the world and without visionaries like her, one wonders
where we would be now. Her daughters have now also carried the mantle and have started their own line called Clan. The apples haven't fallen far from the tree and we are glad she has inspired her own tribe to follow her just as she inspires young fashion designers to go places with their work.
Omoyemi Akerele

reative Director of Style House Files and the brains behind the MTN Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Omoyemi's mark on Nigerian fashion would not be easily forgotten. She was the first editor of the now rested True Love West Africa magazine. Through her experience as a fashion stylist, she has provided a platform of extensive consultancy and exhibition for emerging and designers on the Nigerian scene. Through LFDW she has been able to let the quiet voices of young talent be heard and provided a much needed arena that would enable them further their creative pursuits and take them to greater heights. She recently led a delegation of selected Nigerian designers to the Pitti Immagine Trade Show in Florence, Italy in a bid to further expose the Nigerian fashion industry to the world.
Lexi Mojo Eyes
T
o term Lexi Mojo Eyes as one of Nigeria's fashion ambassadors would not be too far from the truth as he reinvented the Nigerian fashion Industry over 16yrs ago by creating the first national platform, The Nigerian Fashion Show for Nigerian designers to excel. It was also a platform for Nigerian designers to look inward to all local fabrics, accessories and designs in their production line. He campaigned for the buyers and fashionistas to patronise the local Nigerian fashion industry. In 2000, his company Legendary Gold Limited, took 10 Nigerian designers to the World's fashion capital Paris where Nigerian fashion was put on the international spotlight. Today, we have fashion shows and fashion weeks popping up around the country but Lexy Mojo Eyes' contributions will not be forgotten.

Chalya Shagaya
A
true born stylist and fashionista, Chalya has always her finger on the pulse even though styling was a little known and certainly not received vocation at the time. Her first styling job in Nigeria was with Miss Common Wealth beauty pageant in 2001 where she noticed that some of the contestants did not quite have the right accessories and footwear
so she provided for them and put their final looks together though her initial role was as their chaperone. With a successful outcome, it became clear to Chalya that this was a role very few people could fill at the time and there was a dire need for what came naturally to her. She worked closely with Dakova on a couple of his fashion shows in 2002 and served as a muse to designers Folake Coker (who she did an Ad Campaign for in 2003) and Lisa Folawiyo (who named a JBL dress name after her one season). Chalya was the only stylist at the first ever This Day Fashion Week in Lagos. She has been privileged to work with Marc Baptiste who is a renowned fashion photographer in new York, River Island UK on a couple of Ad campaigns, Kelis who she styled for her come back Tour in pieces designed by JBL, Anika Noni Rose (who she dressed in Deola Sagoe), Korto Momolu, BET Rip the Runway and BET Honours, Ikechukwu, Kate Henshaw, Oluchi Orlandi, Sasha Alabi, Polo Watch Company etc. She has gone from the creative side of things to the more business oriented aspect of the fashion industry focusing on market/trend analysis, fashion production and offering advice to the creatives on a consultancy basis, leaving the newer crop of stylists to dominate the industry.
Bayo Haastrup

igeria's premier fashion and editorial makeup artist is Bayo Haastrup. He runs Ijade-Egbin(which translates from Yoruba to mean “Outing of Beauty”) and was the official makeup artist for Media 24 Nigeria publications. His decision to become a makeup artiste was inspired by his mother. After completing degrees in English and Human Kinetics he was visiting family in Ivory Coast when he met International makeup artist Oliver Price who was visiting from Paris to train models and aspiring makeup artistes. Bayo seized that opportunity in1990 and never looked back as he trained with Oliver and went on to Maison de la Mode to learn the basics in makeup, grooming and catwalk. His road to success was long and arduous as people could not wrap their heads around the concept of a makeup artist much less a man 'painting faces' and teaching catwalk. He credits designers like Dakova who he says saw something in him and gave him the opportunity to execute his talent and skill. He was also appointed as the Creative Director at Nigeria's Next Supermodel search.

avid Kolawole Vaughan started the DAKOVA brand sometime in 1986 and took the entire nation and subsequently the continent by storm with his foray into the world of fashion with unique and distinctive designs. His designs comprised of basic casuals to more complex pieces like suits, trousers as well as shirts with the use of African fabrics with high end fashion that potrayed freshness and originality. At a point in the late 90s his use of linen for caftans, tunics and casual wear was explosive causing a major shake up in the industry because as fashionistas described it “If you weren't wearing Dakova, you just hadn't arrived”. Branching into publishing at some point and even politics, DAKOVA has definitely been around and despite a number of distractions and setbacks he has continued to rise from the ashes. He still continues to hold relevance in the fashion scene as one of its true pioneers.
Florence Ita Giwa
T
he former Senator Florence Ita Giwa was and still is a tone and trend setter in the male dominated world of politics in Nigeria. During the period when she was an elected senator, Nigerian female politicians at the time, favoured very low key outfits that really hid their sense of style. But that was not for our senator as she dove whole heartedly into trendy outfits that showed off a woman's assets, highlighting her femininity and celebrating women and womanhood. For every political outing, the senator never failed to make a mark in the sartorial stakes bringing about a new wave of female politicians expressing their unique identity be it in western or traditional attire. She has also contributed to the fashion industry with her immense support and patronage of designers.
Bella Naija U
che-Eze Pedro popularly known as Bella Naija, has come to play a major role in our lives especially in the fashion industry. The year of the blogger was 2006 and that was when she started to write about what she was passionate about; everything Nigerian and most especially fashion in Nigeria. She filled a huge gap in the imaginations of many young Nigerians who had not been back home for a while and were largely out of touch with the fashion and social scene, satisfying their cravings to see a new side of Nigeria. Her blog soon quickly became the place where you could see and find out everything from fashion to gossip. It helped most of our designers to be popularly known within the country and in the disapora and gave them a huge boost in publicity over the years from fashion events to fashion profiles and interviews, fashion adverts as well as giving many more would be bloggers the opportunity to express their views by emulating her footsteps. As the internet became more popular on this side of the globe, so did Bella Naija's popularity, to the extent that other African countries started to take notice and so did the rest of the world. She has been featured on CNN and many other platforms as well as received numerous awards for her contribution to the development of fashion.
Oluchi Orlandi
P
opularly known as Oluchi Onyeagba, she grew up in the rural part of Lagos. She was urged by a family friend to participate in the Mnet face of Africa show to represent Nigeria. This was the first ever continent wide model competition organised by the South African channel Mnet in collaboration with Elite model management. She won the competition at just 17yrs old and was awarded a 3year contract with model agency. She moved to NewYork and has graced so many runways and fashion shows all over the world from London to Paris, Milan, to Tokyo for top designers such as Christian Dior, Chanel, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano and high street campaigns for Gap, Banana Republic, Victoria's secret and also international magazines such as Marie Claire, Vogue, Elle. She is currently married to Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi with a 3yr old son and also still participates in fashion shows in Nigeria. As far as modellng in Nigeria is concerned, Oluchi was the young lady who changed the perception of what Nigerians thought could not be a prestigious and worthy career. After she won, parents started to groom their daughters with a view to them going forth and pursuing any modeling ambition they may

he Duke as he is known is a man of many firsts, unafraid and unperturbed to take big risks knowing that to be a Master of the game, the stakes have to be extremely high. Nduka is a media mogul with varying interests spanning politics, music, entertainment, fashion and more. In 2005 he hosted the first Style weekend that showcased several top designers of the time including Dakova and Deola Sagoe at the prestigious Eko hotel. With each year that has gone by he has raised the stakes combining music and fashion elements together and bringing in worldwide superstars to headline each show, allowing them to see Nigeria and its offering for the first time and taking that report back to the rest of the Western world on what we had to offer. In 2007 supermodels like Tyson Beckford, Naomi Campbell and Alek Wek walked on Nigerian catwalks wearing our local designers in a fashion festival that took the world by storm. Since then there is no fashion capital that The Duke hasn't taken Nigerian and African Fashion to. From NewYork to London, Paris to Johannesburg, Nigerian designers finally had their chance at the limelight that they so richly deserved. In 2011 the first true African fashion week was held playing host to 50 designers from the continent and beyond. The event spanned over a week inviting foreign press, models, celebrities and starts to see what Africa had to offer. This same feat was replicated this year when the Arise Magazine Fashion Week came to town yet again in another superlative show, wowing fashion lovers of all ages, races and creeds. All of this and so much more was made possible by one man who never believes that there is no way and whose contribution to the Nigerian fashion industry will never be disputed or forgotten.

redit must always be given where it is due and the lady behind Nigeria's first true luxury boutique, Designer's Club is someone who has always shied away from public scrutiny. Established in 1993, Designers' Club has been the go to place for those who appreciated the finer side of fashion, exclusive brand names and very selective couture pieces. Ndidi who comes from a privileged background understood quite early that there would always be those who craved fashion items that were not so available and commercialized to the rest of the world. Her keen eye and elevated sense of style always knew how to pick the brands that were on the verge of fashion success and before long she had opened her doors to upper crust of shoppers who gladly came to satisfy their sartorial desires. The motto of Designers' Club thus became “Fashion for discerning people�. Till date the standard of Designers' Club has stayed consistently high in keeping with other luxury stores around the world. She encourages the Nigerian brands that are aiming for luxury and carries some of their stock alongside the foreign designers that she has always been known for.
Tara Durotoye Erelu Abiola T
ara Fela Durotoye is a veteran in the beauty industry, she has created a phenomenal success story that would truly inspire and motivate young women in our country and beyond. She is the managing director and creative director of House of Tara international, a business that has trained over 2000 makeup artistes, most of whom are now major players in Nigeria's beauty industry through its make up school and empowered over 1000 young women in tertiary institutions through its "Tara Orekelewa Beauty Representative scheme. Hers is a brand that promotes ethics and ethnicity by empowering young women for economic independence without moral compromise. She pioneered the bridal makeup profession in Nigeria and she launched the 1st bridal directory in 1999.

Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, the 4th Erelu Kuti of Lagos, is a woman of substance whose sense of style brings out the glitzy side of combining traditional fashion with modern style. When it comes to colour, Erelu, has a thing for the white colour. She has succeeded in glamourising white, with her all white daily ensemble, which she chuns out in different glamorous styles.

r Osodi has been in the business of clothing women since 1988. House of Bunor is the name of his label and it's a name that has become synonymous with expertly created corsets and bustiers. A former professional model, he studied visual and graphic arts in the College of Textile Technology, Lagos. He has won several awards in his years as a fashion designer as well participated in numerous fashion shows around the world most notable amongst them are International Fashion Designer of the Year 199192 and Fashion Person of Year 2003. He's also the brain behind the highly successful annual international show Black, Bold and Jazzy and it was he who designed the outfits worn by Miss Agbani Darego when she won the MGBN and Miss World beauty pageants in 2001.

lorence Ibiyemi Fawaz was born in Nigeria by a Lebanese father and a Nigerian mother, she did part of her education in Nigeria, London and New York. For over thirty years she had a successful career as a Fashion

and Photographic Model, Beauty Promoter/Consultant, Fashion Designer, Trade Show Organizer, Chef and a Restaurateur. Miss Fawaz pioneered professional modeling in Nigeria and is known as the Queen of Nigerian mod. She opened the first modeling school and professional modeling agency in Nigeria and in West Africa as a whole called People in Pictures in the late 80s and trained as well as promoted the best in the business in Nigeria. With her great experience in the modeling industry, she decided to expose African models to the international scene; she then started the first model search in Africa, before any other competitors in Africa. The search was known as MISS ALL AFRICA SUPER MODEL OF THE YEAR SEARCH CONTEST from 1990 to 1996. In 1997 she relocated to the United States due a heart condition that went undetected and undiagnosed from birth. She is now a deaconess and runs a Charity organization called Banner of Love Outreach in America.

de Bakare was born in England. He began working at the fashion houses of Victor Edelstein and Christian Stambolian, purveyors of style in British fashion in the 80's and 90's. In 1991 Ade Bakare couture was established and he started selling his collections to London boutiques in Hampstead, Bond street and Knightsbridge amongst other parts of England and Scotland. His collections are made of classic dresses with a touch of modernity using dress fabrics such as wool, gazar silks, laces and crepes. He has won quite a few awards in the UK and Nigeria and he is constantly invited to show his exquisite collections all over the world. In 2007 he established The Yo u n g D e s i g n e r s c r e a t i v e competition to encourage new talent in Nigeria, a contest held annually and has also opened a boutique in Nigeria.
elechi Amadi Obi is truly one of the giants of fashion photography in Africa. He recently co-founded the fashion and style guide Mania magazine which boasts rich and powerful fashion images beautifully captured and translated into a awesome graphics. Kelechi is unarguably the titan of fashion photography in Nigeria being one of the first, most skilled and consistent fashion photographers of his time. His images resemble still life drawings, natural but still get you to feel the character. He started taking pictures from childhood and has always been fascinated with visuals. Today, there is virtually no magazine, designer or creative director who hasn't worked with Kelechi which is a testament to how accomplished his portfolio is and his level of skill at what he come to be known for.

ounder of Ginani Gold, a fashion and training institute that conducts research and studies the various methods of pattern making and design. The intent being to develop a simplified system for use in local garment production that combines ease, speed and accuracy in order to be suitable for use in small businesses producing custom made garments, reducing the number of garment fittings required during production thereby reducing production time and costs. This research has generated an efficient patternmaking and design system as well as a sizing system which is currently in use by students of the fashion training institute and making Eunice indispensable to many of the existing fashion designers today. Ginani was formed in 1990 and till date Eunice has worked with brands like Vlisco for over three years training their agents all around Nigeria. Her expertise has also been invaluable to projects like MTN LDFW and AMFW. She has trained over a 700 designers to her credit and maintains a strong work ethic that many have benefitted from.

ofisticat was started in the late 70s by the four Ogunlesi brothers when the Federal Military Government imposed a ban on the importation of readymade garments. Their tailoring service and fashion items were therefore an alternative for Nigerian men, a selected clientele who were used to only importing their clothes. Sophisticat has weathered the storm of fashion and designing in Nigeria making them one of the strongest men's fashion houses in Nigeria today inspiring many young designers who wished specialize the craft of designing traditional attire.. Though they have diversified into the production of cosmetics and toiletries they will still be known for their dedication to quality and unwavering attention to detail when it comes to men's native attire.

tyle entrepreneur and creative director of Ouch couture is the young man known as Uche Nnaji. His is a totally Nigerian brand with an unwavering passion for our local platforms. Ouch, whom many may view as a newcomer opened the doors of his first boutique in 2006 at Mende, Maryland and since then spread his tentacles and excelled. We need to develop and reinforce those essential courtesies that make our relationships strong, valuable and long-lasting. Here are some etiquette tips, which are easy to incorporate into everyday life: 1. Turn the cell phone off -- completely or leave in the silent mode during a luncheon meeting, social function, or on public transportation. 2. Hold the door -- whether male or female, hold open a door you have just passed through for the person behind you. 3. Bring a gift for the hostess nothing expensive, just something thoughtful. 4. Keep to the right -- on the sidewalk, in stairwells. 5. Say please and thank you -- to waiters, flight attendants, store clerks, cab drivers -- these little things go a long way. 6. Research published in 2005, New York University School of Medicine researchers provided some of the most compelling evidence yet that long-term exposure to air pollution-even at levels within federal standardscauses heart disease, fetal abnormalities, cancers, osteoporosis{sequestration of these toxins in bones}. Cancer known medically as malignant neoplasm is defined as unregulated cell growth as a result of gene mutation or DNA damage caused by environmental toxins. About 10 percent of cancer is said to be hereditary. Over time these toxins accumulates in the body causing chains of of event ranging from series of mutation and inactivation of the tumour suppressor gene leading DNA alteration, abnormal cell growth and cancer. In cancer cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors and invade nearby structures. The cause of cancer is unknown but many things are known to increase the risk of cancer as mention above. Cancer can present at the early stage as generalized body weakness, headaches, dizziness, body pains, swelling, easy bruising, bleeding, weight loss and other symtoms the symptoms depend on the the type of cancer and the stage of the disease. The chances of surviving the disease vary greatly by the type and location of the cancer and the extent of disease. While cancer can affect people of all ages, the risk of developing cancer generally increases with age. In 2007, cancer caused about 13% of all human deaths worldwide (7.9 million). Rates are rising as more people live to an old age and as mass lifestyle changes occur in the developing world. The right hair utensils: Every woman needs a good boar's bristle brush, they usually come at a big price but it's always worth it. I always advise to steer clear of plastic-bristle brushes. The proper bristles are key. A combination of natural boar bristles on either a round or flat brush is best for dry hair, while soft, rubber-toothed wide-paneled brushes are best for damp hair. The round brush is perfect when drying hair with blow dryer and the boar's bristle is good for the hair. A paddle brush like the one shown in the middle picture is good for doing s t ra i g h t e r, s m o o t h e r blowouts or detangling hair. And for our afro sisters a good old afro comb always does the trick!

t was a night of fun and good music when Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, Archibishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos led important dignitaries from political and business world, as well as clerics to a dinner/fundraising event for Augustine University Lagos. Organised penultimate weekend at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Augustine University, located in Ilara-Epe, Lagos State is a continuation of the catholic mission enviable record in the delivery of quality primary and secondary education to all Nigerians. The Cardinal, Anthony Olubunmi Okojie, believes that the time has come to move to the next level; University education. Hence the establishment of Augustine University (AUL). He noted that the AUL is being established for learning and character. It will produce wellrounded persons who will be role models and leaders in society. Augustine University is a conventional University comprising of several Chief M. Thomas colleges that are to be found in similar Universities the world. Gracing the event were notable personalities such as Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas (Chairman, Project fund raising committee), Dame Marie Fatayi-Williams, Mrs Beatrice Agama among other dignitaries. First Lady of Lagos State, Dame Abimbola Fashola and Chief Godswill Akpabio, governor of Akwa Ibom State sent representatives. Mrs Beatrice Agama, mother of Mrs Diezani Allison-Maduekwe, minister of petroleum who represented her daughter, in her remarks, spoke on the need to raise more funds for the school, encouraging guests to donate generously for the development of the university.
