3. Enumere 10 temas sobre los derechos humanos. -Democracia -Derechos culturales -Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales -Derechos humanos y la solidaridad internacional -Desapariciones -Discapacidad -Discriminación -Educación -Ejecuciones -Empresas transnacionales -Esclavitud 4.

UNIVERSIDAD TÉCNICA DE AMBATO FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS HUMANAS Y DE LA EDUCACIÓN CARRERA PEDAGOGÍA DE LOS IDIOMAS NACIONALES Y EXTRANJEROS AUTORES: Acosta Vanesa Becerra Karen Bocancho Paola

LEVEL: SECOND “A” PROYECTO INTEGRADO DE SABERES Interacción sujeto-contexto y sus dimensiones socio-educativas y culturales. Tema: Students participation in group work. Tutor: Mg Dorys Cumbe. AMBATO - ECUADOR MARZO – AGOSTO 2019

27

28

1. TITLE OF THE PROJECT Students participation in group work.

2. OBJECTIVES a. GENERAL 

To identify the problems that students have in work groups in the level Bachillerato at Andino School.

b. SPECIFICS 

To analyze the participation of students when working in groups.

To analyze the cause of the problems found in group work during class.

To describe the process of making group.

3. METHODOLOGY The type of research that has been carried out is explanatory since it is not intended to describe a problem, but rather to try to find the cause of the problem, such as identify the problems that exist in the students group work.

It´s pretended to achieve the objectives through a field investigation process which consists of the collection of data directly from the reality where the facts occur in which it can be analyze and observe how is the participation of students in the work group and how it influences in the learning.

28

29

And it's descriptive because occurs in natural situations, it is designed to describe the distribution of variables, without considering causal or other hypotheses.

On the other hand, the techniques of data collection that have been used to carry out the research of the project has been direct observation, which has been done by attending the different educational institutions in which it has been possible to analyze the problems that exist when the students working in group.

Finally, the data collection instruments that have been used have been the observation cards number 1, which have been of great help to analyze the student participation in group work and how this influences learning.

4.-THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Group work involves students working collaboratively on set tasks, in or out of the classroom. Group work includes: any learning and teaching tasks or activities that require students to work in groups, any formal assessment tasks that require students to work in groups.

Group sizes can vary from pairs to large groups of students. This guide deals with small groups (Chiriac, 2018). While the focus is on the face-to-face environment, much of the content also applies to larger groups or the online context.

Student participation in group work is when instructors assign group projects and collaborative learning experiences, it requires students to work with one another to learn the

29

30

content and apply it to the project at hand, while at the same time learning important lessons regarding cooperation and teamwork. Research shows that group work can have a very positive impact on learning outcomes for many reasons (Chiriac, 2018). Group work essentially creates an environment where students "teach" and explain concepts to each other. This reinforces the information provided by the instructor and also provides students the opportunity to "hear" or learn the material from a peer, who may be able to explain it in a way that makes more sense to the other students.

The concept of students working in groups also promotes a setting where collaboration and cooperation are valued and produce better results, teaching the students valuable life-long skills that are important in the professional workplace.

Witching the teaching of the English language at High School Educational Unit "Andino" it was observed what the classes are like and, above all, what the participation of the students in work groups is like It is not acceptable because it produces several conflicts between students.

Several opinions on the participation of students in group work mention that the participation is one of those workhorse instructional strategies easy to use, straightforward, expected, and often quite successful at accomplishing a number of learning goals (Carriรณn, 2010) .

According to (Carriรณn, 2010) participation consists of:

Participation gives students the opportunity to practice using the language of the discipline most faculty have spoken astronomy, accounting, psychology, gerontology, political science,

30

31

whatever the field for years, and they’ve forgotten how much of the language is new, different, and difficult for students. Participation gives students the chance to practice using a different vocabulary.

Participation can be used to develop important speaking skills. In many professional contexts, people need to be able to speak up in a group. They may need to offer information, ask questions, or argue for a different solution. People don’t learn to speak up in a group by reading about how to do it it’s one of those skills best developed with practice. And it’s one of those skills that develops better with feedback. If participation is being used to teach students this public communication skill, they will need feedback.

Participation provides the teacher feedback. When students answer or try to explain, teachers can see the extent of their understanding. They can correct or help the students correct what the students haven’t got right or don’t see quite clearly.

Through critical analysis, there are several problems that affect group work. The first cause is that students do not have good communication with their classmates, because they do not know how to listen to the opinions of others, and it is general disagreements.

Moreover, some students do not cooperate in group work this causes that the work is not well done, and the score is bad. Another cause is class discrimination among students because sometimes they choose their work groups and leave aside the students with whom they do not have a closer relationship. This can cause the students to be irresponsible with their respective work and not cooperate in the group due to the bad relationship.

31

32

In addition, the number of students influences the group work because the work is not divided equally that would be fair for all. there the disagreements begin by the qualification of the people who do not work.

Graphic N° 1

A possible solution to these problems in group and individual work are:

• Divide complex tasks

• Plan and manage time.

into parts and steps.

• Develop stronger communication skills.

• Refinement of understanding through discussion and explanation.

• Give and receive comments on their work from all students without exception.

Source: Johnson, D. W., Johnson, R. T., & Smith, K. A. (2005). Elaborated by: Vanessa A., Karen B., Paola B. (2019).

Group work in class can help students develop a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional world (Woolley, 2008).Positive group experiences, moreover, have been shown to contribute to student learning, retention and overall college success (Astin, 2006).

32

33

The benefits of group work for staff and students are both pedagogical and pragmatic (Woolley, 2008). In quality group work quality learning, teaching, and assessment practices are employed in order to facilitate the achievement of learning outcomes. The degree to which these benefits occur depends upon the design, organization and purpose of the group work, as well as the entering perceptions of staff and students. According to (Woolley, 2008) a good reasons to work in groups include: 

Enhancement of student learning through the collaborative process

Value placed on teamwork skills by employers

Development of generic Graduate Attributes and skills

Efficiency in time, cost and energy for academics

Reduction in workload associated with assessment, grading and feedback.

While the potential learning benefits of group work are significant, simply assigning group work is no guarantee that these goals will be achieved. In fact, group projects can and often do backfire badly when they are not designed, supervised, and assessed in a way that promotes meaningful teamwork and deep collaboration.

6.- RESULTS During the pre-professional practice and the elaboration of the observation card number 1 the following results were obtained within the Cooperative Group Work.

33

34

OBSERVATION CARD Nº1 Cooperative Group Work Criteria

Never

Sometimes

Always

Students participate actively in group- work activities

Students express their ideas spontaneously Students accept their classmates’ suggestions naturally Students evidence responsibility in their group work activities Students contribute to achieve the established goals in class Students participate equally in group activities Students respect their classmates’ opinions Students help each other when needed In the Andino School at the Bachillerato level, the students sometimes participate actively in group work activities. They sometimes express their ideas spontaneously and never accept the suggestions of their classmates naturally. The students sometimes evidence responsibility in their group work activities and contribute to achieves established goals in class. They never participate equally in group activities. Students sometimes respect their classmates opinions and sometimes help each other when needed. In conclusion most young people at this level don't like cooperative group work, some students prefer to work alone.

34

35

Group work conflicts

Criteria

Never

Sometimes Always

Some conflicts are evident among classmates The students have disagreements The students solve their conflicts by themselves The students discuss their problems in groups The students are willing to give in to solve their conflicts

There is a series of conflicts between the students when doing a cooperative group work, such as discrimination, dividing the group work and only one has the weight and several students have disagreements when expressing their ideas among groups that do not generally get along. Other common problems in the classroom are the lack of leadership and coordination, the inability to communicate effectively, the difficulty in defining and assigning tasks, the problems in maintaining equitable participation and the frustration in establishing and achieving the group's objectives. Conclusions 

It has been analyzed that students have several conflicts when working in groups, which are that students have disagreements with each other, do not collaborate when performing assigned tasks and do not resolve their conflicts.



The causes of the problems that have been found when working in groups are that the teacher has not given a good explanation before coordinating the work, another is that the students do not have good communication with each other, discrimination, and finally irresponsibility of some students.

35

36

It was observed that the instructor does not define the learning objectives for each activity.

Recommendations 

Thoughtfully consider group formation., Groups should be formed in a way that furthers the learning goals of the group activity.

Require individual members to keep track of their contributions., The final project should include a report from every member identifying their contribution to the project. If two members report contributing the same thing, the teacher defers to the student who has evidence that supports what the student claims to have done.

A possible solution to these problems in group works are divide complex tasks into parts and steps, plan and manage time, refinement of understanding through discussions and explanations, give and receive comments on their work from all students and finally develop stronger communication skills.
