As our year begins we are pleased to present this catalog featuring the collection of Bryan Ono. Bryan was a unique individual with a real passion for collecting. Although his main focus was “Star Wars”, he also had a great love for all things Disney. His passion was reflected in the amazing prop reproductions he produced with Master Replicas, and the pieces presented in this catalog come from his personal collection.
2023 brings a lot of exciting changes to Van Eaton Galleries. We have moved into our new larger Studio City location with a bigger gallery, exhibition, and auction space. If you have not visited our new location, we hope you can soon.
This month’s auction is the first of several very exciting and important auctions we have planned for the year. In the coming months, we will present the Joel Magee Collection of Disneyana and Disneyland Parksthe largest Disney Park collection in private hands, and the largest and most impressive Disney Park collection ever offered for sale.
We also have on our schedule the Paul Morantz Collection - an impressive and eclectic collection of Illustration art, Animation Art, Disneyana, and Tin Toys. Paul’s collection includes some of the rarest Disney toys and tin toys in private hands - it is a collection not to be missed.

For decades before digital imaging, the movies turned to 8”x10” glossy prints. Directors and casting agents found actors through their headshots, and publicity stills were sent to newspapers and magazines to promote the films. The best memento for the fan of an actor was a signed photo from their idol. These pages include all these types of photos, plus personal and behind the scenes shots of the stars.

A collection of (19) publicity photos from “The Wizard of Oz.” One print of Dorothy and Glinda dates from 1939, with the rest likely produced in time with theatrical rereleases. 8. A Collection of Jane Russell Glamour Photos. (Paramount/ Universal, 1940s-50s) A collection of (14) glamour photos of actress Jane Russell. Measuring 8.25”x11” and 8.25”x10”, the photos are in very good overall condition, despite slight wear to edges and corners. $100 - $200
9. A Collection of Fan Photos and Celebrity Scrapbooks. (1930s-60s) An amazing collection of (72) photo fan cards and (2) scrapbooks of Hollywood celebrity images. Notably among the lot are photos of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Harold Lloyd. One scrapbook contains an assortment of candid amateur photos and headshots of Betty White, Jane Powell, Doris Day, Shirley Jones, Gale Storm, and Debbie Reynolds, some of which are signed by the actresses. The other contains numerous photos featuring Eddie Fisher and various actresses. The scrapbooks measure 14”x11” and the photos measure various sizes smaller than that. 11. Collection Of Vicki Nichols Behind the Scenes Photos. (Various studios, 1938-54) A collection of (86) photos once belonging to Hollywood costume and women’s wardrobe designer Vicki Nichols. Among the lot are documentational photos of notable actresses Grace Kelly, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, and many others. Two prints are full cast photos from likely earlier stage productions. Many of the photos were once mounted in a scrapbook and range from 4”x5” to 10.25”x8.25”, each displaying in good overall condition, despite creases, few tears, and wear to both edges and corners. $200 - $400

(TWA, 1956) An InFlight commercial postcard for TWA boldly signed by screen legend Marilyn Monroe as “Marilyn Monroe Miller”, dated 14-15 July 1956, shortly after she married Arthur Miller on June 29th of that year. The postcard is addressed in Hebrew and unmailed. The 5.5”x3.5” postcard is in very good condition, with slight edge wear from age and handling. $200 - $400

(United Artists, 1961) A set of (3) original 8”x10” negatives from the feature film “The Misfits.” All three prominently feature Marilyn Monroe, two with Clark Gable, and one with Montgomery Clift. Movie Posters are works of art in their own right. Some are stylistic collages, like the iconic original Star Wars poster from 1977. Others like “The Sting” show a single moment that teases the entire narrative. The best movie posters epitomize an entire film in one image, and are as memorable as the films they represent.
24. “Wife Versus Secretary” Meloy Brothers Poster. (MGM, 1936) A rare one of a kind Meloy Brothers poster for “Wife Vs. Secretary” starring Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, and Jimmy Stewart in an early role. In 1935 and 1936, the Meloy Bros. Inc. produced one of a kind, hand painted 40”x60” posters for theaters throughout the Midwest. Using an enlarged photo printed to heavyweight board, each one is individually colored with all text hand-painted. Very few of these survive, but when more than one for the same title exist, they have different versions of clothing colors, and even font styles, sizes, and placement. Measuring 40”x60”, the poster is in good condition, with light wear including small scratches and chipping overall, and edge wear particularly at corners. $2,000 - $4,000

(MGM, 1944) An original release lobby card for MGM’s “Gaslight.” Starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman, the film also featured Angela Lansbury, seen in this lobby card, in her first theatrical role. (Eon Productions, 1962) A U.S. Military Release one sheet poster for “Dr. No.” The two-color poster announces the return engagement of the first film in the James Bond franchise, exclusively for viewing on US Military Bases, and features the added “GP” rating. Presented here are mementos from motion picture history. These are the tools used by filmmakers to design the costumes and characters, score the music, and create the props for the movies. There are personal documents and correspondences of the stars. Even screen used miniatures and props - the items on the following pages are all one of a kind and represent a unique moments in the history of Hollywood.
48.A Collection Of Samuel Goldwyn Studios Acetate Recordings. (Samuel Goldwyn Studios, 1946-47) A rare collection of (6) Samuel Goldwyn Studios acetate recordings. Among the lot are records containing piano, orchestrated, and vocal tracks related to the feature films “The Best Years of Our Lives,” and “A Song Was Born,” as well as a performance of the Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra. Measuring 12”, the recordings are in good to very good condition despite scratches from use. $2,000 - $4,000
Samuel Goldwyn Studios. Two of the records feature four instrumental tracks from “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (1947). The third record features “Molly Molone” (with vocals performed by Danny Kaye) and is backed with “O Sing to God” performed by a boys’ choir for “The Bishop’s Wife.” Measuring 12”, the acetate records are in very good condition with minor scratches and wear. $1,000 - $2,000
50. A Pair of “The Bishop’s Wife” Acetate Records. (Samuel Gold wyn, 1947) A pair of acetate recordings prepared by Samuel Goldwyn Studios for the production of “The Bishop’s Wife.” Both records feature various cuts of orchestrated music produced for “The Bishop’s Wife,” recorded 8-22-47 and 9-9-47. Measuring 12”, the acetate records are in very good to fine condition with the slightest wear. $800 - $1,000
51. A Collection of Composer Nick Redman Mementos. (Redman, 1950s-2006) A collection of (5) unique personal mementos from the collection of soundtrack producer Nick Redman. Among the lot is a handwritten score sheet of “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks, a printed page of “Monteargentario: Seven Dances for Solo Piano” inscribed “To Nick with much appreciation and all good wishes, from Harvey Schmidt, New York City 24 April 1992,” a signed score sheet of Lalo Schifrin’s “Scorpio’s Theme” from Dirty Harry, and two personal greeting cards addressed to Anthony Thomas from Erich W. Korngold, with original envelopes. Measuring various sizes from 12.5”x9.5” to 5”x5”, the ephemera displays in good condition overall, despite slight tears and minor wear from age and handling. $200 - $400
52. A Bette Davis Handwritten Signed Letter. A hand-written and signed letter by Bette Davis. The two-page letter gives feedback on a script and project. The pages measure 8”x6” and the letter is in very good condition, despite slight wear from age. $100 - $200
53. A Jane Russell Signed Authorization Note. (Hughes Productions, 1940) A Jane Russell signed note to Howard Hughes Productions. The typed note approves Hughes Productions to deliver her checks to her agent, Howard Lang Ltd. The document was prepared in relation to Jane Russell’s debut in The Outlaw, which was released three years after production due to the film violating the “Production Code.” Measuring 8.5”x11”, the ephemera is in fine condition, despite the slightest wear and original creases and folds. $100 - $200
54. Grace Kelly, Clark Gable and Ava Gardner signed items. (MGM, 1950s) A collection of (3) items signed by the stars of 1953’s “Mogambo” - Grace Kelly, Clark Gable, and Ava Gardner. Most notable is a (5) page letter hand-written by Kelly to her friend “Prudy,” on MGM stationery from the African location of the film, giving a personal account of the three actors interactions. (2) publicity photos from the film are included, with one signed by Clark Gable. Also included is a clipped Ava Gardner autograph. Measuring 8”x10” and 8.75”x6”, the pieces are in very good to fine condition, exhibiting mild creases, wear, and fading from age. $200 - $400
55. A Pair of Signed Stan Laurel Letters & Photo. (Stan Laurel, 1957) A pair of typed letters signed by Stan Laurel, with an 8”x10” glossy portrait. The two typed letters were written to a member of a fan club dedicated to the legendary comedian and signed by Laurel. Measuring 8.5”x6.25” and 8”x5”, the papers and photo are in very good condition, exhibiting only the slightest wear from age. $100 - $200
59. Sam Peckinpah & Ray Bradbury Correspondences (Bradbury/ Peckinpah, 1976) A collection of (5) correspondences between author Ray Bradbury and director Sam Peckinpah. The letters were written during the production of Peckinpah’s “Cross of Iron,” and contain many candid, humorous, and explicit exchanges. One letter from Sam Peckinpah notably encourages Bradbury to adapt “Something Wicked This Way Comes” for the cinema. Measuring 4.5”x6.5” to 8.5”x11.75”, this rare collection of ephemera is in very good condition, exhibiting spots of discoloration and slight wear to edges and corners. $200 - $400
60. The Devil’s Brigade & The Bridge at Remagen Scripts. (United Artists, 1968/69) A pair of scripts for World War II themed films. “The Bridge at Remagen” is the 66-page script for John Guillermin’s 1969 film depicting the U.S. Armored Division’s last weeks within World War II. “The Devil’s Brigade” is the 132-page script for Andrew McLangen’s 1968 film about the First Special Service Force of the United States. “The Devil’s Brigade” script contains some hand-written annotation throughout. Measuring 8.75”x11”, both are in good condition, despite yellowing, creases, and wear to edges and corners of pages. $100 - $200
61. A John Wayne Signed Greeting Card. (John Wayne, 1969) A greeting card signed “Duke alias Marion” by John Wayne to his mother, with a personal Thanksgiving message. Wayne’s given name was Marion Robert Morrison. The card comes with a letter from a medical professional who cared for Wayne’s mother during her final days at a convalescent hospital in Seal Beach, California. The card features a hand painted figure accomplished in gouache on wood on the front. The 5.25”x7” card and 7”x10” letter are in very good condition, with slight wear typical of age. $100 - $200
62. An Archive of Sam Peckinpah Correspondences. (Peckinpah, 1970s) A collection of (51) letters and communications between Sam Peckinpah and his personal assistant Paul Peterson, Swedish composer Sture Dahlstrom, and others. The lot includes many letters regarding reactions to “Convoy” and possible film projects. Of note is an original letter authorizing Paul Peterson to “conduct research for an original story and screenplay about cocaine and the illegal trafficking of cocaine.” Measuring 8.5”x11” and under, the unique collection of ephemera is in very good condition, exhibiting mild creases and slight wear from use. $100 - $200

63. “One From the Heart” Dunes Hotel ScreenUsed Prop Sign. (Zoetrope Studios, 1981) A miniature reproduction of the Las Vegas Dunes Hotel sign, used in the opening credits of “One From the Heart.” The miniature bears the “Directed by Francis Coppola” sign seen in the film, as well as the lower “Story By Armyan Bernstein.” Measuring 26.5” tall including the 3.5”x11”x5” base, the miniature is in very good condition, with some wear from age. The electronics have not been tested for functionality. $2,000 - $4,000
rubber negative mold used to make jewelry for the legendary One-Eyed Willy’s treasure in “The Goonies.” The two-part mold threads together with plastic or metal studs. It is designed to create leaf-shaped brooches. There are inventory numbers handwritten on the side. Measuring 9” in diameter by 1.25” deep, the mold is in good production used condition with some exterior wear. $400 - $600
65. “Return to Oz” Kansas Town Miniature Models. (Disney, 1985) A collection of miniature prop model buildings from the small Kansas town of Franklin created for the 1985 feature film “Return to Oz.” An unofficial sequel to the original “The Wizard of Oz,” this film takes Dorothy on a new adventure that pays tribute to the original. The models depict two shops and a rickety barn, as well as several smaller pieces including lumber and townsfolk. Constructed in lightweight wood, the tallest of the model sections measures 7” tall. The models are in fair to good condition, with some wear throughout from use and storage. $2,000 - $4,000
66. Killer Klowns Design Concepts by Charlie Chiodo. (Chiodo, 1988) A large page of Killer Klowns from Outer Space artwork by Charlie Chiodo. The sheet features (10) clown designs for the Chiodo Brothers’ cult classic film and has been signed by artist Charlie Chiodo. Measuring 19”x24’”, the page has been dry mounted to 20.5”x25.5” artists board and is in good condition, despite creases and wear to edges and corners. $600 - $800
67. Marvel Original Concept Art Signed by Philip J. Felix. (Marvel, 1991) A piece of original concept art produced for MARVEL’s proposed Siegfried and Roy fantasy series, by artist Philip J. Felix. The vibrant artwork has been accomplished in mixed media. MARVEL’s concept was abandoned, as the project was picked up by DIC Studios. The entire piece has an image size of 24”x32.75” within its mat and 33”x44.5” frame. It is signed by the artist. $500 - $700
68. A Limited Edition 007 Golden Gun. (United Artists/S.D. Studios, 1994) A limited edition replica of The Golden Gun from “The Man with the Golden Gun” by S.D. Studios LTD. The loyal reproduction was inspired by the gun of assassin Francisco Scaramanga in the 1974 James Bond film, and assembles from the prop replica cigarette case, cufflink, lighter, pen, with plaque and “007” engraved prop bullet. The replica was created for the 20th anniversary of the film, is numbered 232 of 7,500, and comes within a wooden walnut case featuring a glass lid etched with “007” and pre-set to open when the combination lock has been set to “007.” The Golden Gun is in good condition, with light wear including scratches from handling. $1,000 - $2,000
69. A Rocketeer Helmet Factory Engineering Prototype. (Master Replicas/Disney, 2005) An extremely rare Factory Engineering Prototype of the Limited Edition Rocketeer Helmet produced for the Disney Showcase Collection by Master Replicas. Bryan Ono grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area but spent his entire adult life in Southern California after moving to Los Angeles to attend UCLA. Since childhood, he loved Disneyland, Star Trek, toys, and magic. Star Wars was a life-changing event, and Bryan proudly boasted of seeing the original film 38 times in theaters, and both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on their opening nights. After graduating from UCLA with a mechanical engineering degree, he held several Product Management positions before work intersected with his personal loves, at Mattel Toys. Followed by jobs at Wham-O, Mattel (again), and Wild Planet Toys, he landed at Master Replicas as it was founded in 2001. Master Replicas’ mission was to create screen-accurate reproductions from beloved movies, most notable being Star Wars and Star Trek. While overseeing the Star Wars line, he invented Force FX lightsabers that looked like the original props, and also lit up and glowed like the special effects seen in the films, with screen accurate motion sensitive sounds. Bryan humbly joked, not inaccurately, that they were “one of the most successful toys ever.”
When Master Replicas’ license for Star Wars was not renewed in 2007, Ono and Lucasfilm both felt that he was one of the best people to move forward with prop replicas, and together with Larry Leung and Barry Jones, founded EFX. Bryan Ono’s personal love of films and television shows can be seen in the replicas that came out under his watch at both Master Replicas and EFX. Speaking of replica design, he said “It takes the same amount of time to do the first ninety percent as the last ten percent. In 1977 Star Wars was such a surprise hit at the box office that the merchandise machine was slow to cash in on it. Kenner was unable to produce action figures in time for Christmas 1977, so they sold an all-cardboard “Early Bird Kit” that promised to ship the first four figures as soon as they were ready in 1978. Star Wars toys are both highly popular and highly collectible. The most common items still command a huge price in good condition years later - and the obscure, odd items that didn’t sell initially are often more highly prized by collectors today.

Following the lawsuit, the last two figures of the Elastic Hero line, Plastic Man and the Hulk, were produced in extremely short runs. The ultra-rare Elastic Hulk has been named as the “Holy Grail” of both Hulk collectibles Stretch toys and is considered one of the hardest to find of all toys. This Elastic Hulk comes complete with box, original styrofoam and plastic overlay, and “Putting-On- Pants” instructions. (McDonald’s, 1940-43) An extremely rare historic photo and early menu from the original McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino California. On May 15, 1940, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their Famous Bar-B-Q restaurant in San Bernardino. In 1948 they redesigned and rebuilt the restaurant, streamlining the menu to nine items. With the success of their “Speedee Service System,” the McDonalds began franchising in 1953, and came to the attention of Ray Kroc in 1954. Kroc took their name and system to global success, virtually inventing fast food. Very little survives from the pre-1948 McDonald’s. This lot features a photograph of a large event held at the first restaurant in 1940. This may be either the grand opening of McDonald’s, or a local annual celebration called “Calico Days” which occurred at the same time of year. The original sign is visible out front, as a large crowd in western clothes enjoys food and live entertainment. This lot also contains a menu dated April of 1943 listing fountain drinks and sandwiches served at the time. Notably, the menu has pencil annotations striking off all but nine items, in line with the 1948 “Speedee Service System” menu. The photo measuring 14.5”x7.5” is in very good condition, with light toning, corner pinholes, and a name written on the bottom edge. The 8.5”x5.5” menu is in good condition, with edge wear and spotting, pencil marks, and paper retention on back corners from scrapbook mounting. $500 - $700

The pioneers of animation quickly discovered that with drawings, magic could be created. In animation a mouse can fly a plane, or a dinosaur can walk the earth again. Entire worlds of fantasy are created for all of us to explore.
(Winsor McCay, 1914) An incredibly rare production drawing from Winsor McKay’s groundbreaking “Gertie the Dinosaur.” McCay, a well-known newspaper illustrator and commercial artist of the time, hand inked thousands of drawings onto rice paper to create “Gertie the Dinosaur,” considered to be the first animated cartoon character, and one of the most important animated shorts of all time. McCay gave his character personality, something that had not been done in earlier “trick” animated shorts. He opened the door for the possibilities of animation and in doing so greatly influenced the next generation of animators including the Fleischer Brothers, Walter Lantz, Paul Terry and Walt Disney. McCay incorporated the short into his Vaudeville act and later in a short film produced by William Fox in 1914. This particular image appears at the 13:51 mark in the film, as Gertie leans towards the lake to take a drink. The inked rice paper measures 9”x7” and was mounted by McCay to a board as part of the production process. 312. Ken Anderson’s Early Walt Disney Studios Drawing Board. (Disney, 1934) An early portable animation drawing board that once belonged to Disney Legend Ken Anderson. These wooden boards were used by animators while working away from their desks, often during character studies and classes. Anderson, who started at the studio in 1934, wrote his name above the metal two-peg registration bar. Around the 1950s, animator Bill Weaver used the drawing board after Anderson. On the reverse of the board, Weaver etched the message “Bill Weaver - Hands Off.” The 15”x15” varnished wood board is in good overall used condition, showing wear from use and age. In the years following Brayton-Laguna’s run, other companies produced similar pieces, occasionally from the original molds. These figures date to the 1940s, following Brayton-Laguna’s original run. Ferdinand measures 8.25”x8.5” and his mother measures 5.75”x10”. Pooh Corner located next to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh furthered the Hundred Acre theme with illuminating beehive lamps. This early version of the lamp is comprised of paper, while later ones were constructed of more durable materials that would withstand wear from both guests and cast members. This lamp may be the only one of the original paper lamps that has survived. The lamp runs on a 15A/125V power source. A “Thirsty Man” mold and head from Ice Station Cool sponsored by Coca-Cola. During the late 1990s, Participant Sponsor Coca-Cola gained more of a presence at Walt Disney World with Ice Station Cool located near Innoventions. The most memorable part the attraction was a frozen caveman whom “Coca-Cola Coolologists” named “Thirsty Man” due to the bottle just beyond his grasp.” Included in the lot is an original mold and foam cast of the figure’s head.
