Ameri-Prayer Part 1 (Ameri-Prayer Part 2 begins on p13)
So this mission trip began around March 11th 2020 as I was arriving in Coachella Valley for the annual pro tennis tournament. I found out it was canceled because of this thing called "coronavirus". I still didn't know much about it at the time. So from there on March 12 Thursday it was raining all day I went up to Big Bear & just drove through there & cast my line a few times. Cold in the morning about 36 degrees. March 13th Friday: I continued onward back down into Los Angeles noticing all the different things that we're being cancelled -all schools closed- Coachella Music Festival cancelled- universities canceling classes -Tom Hanks announces he has the virus -PGA cancelled. So I'm starting to pray4 the coronavirus. & I start to make plans to leave LA because they're closing Palos Verdes Library - & all libraries over the next few days I found out would be closed (& they have been closed for almost 3 months now). So I go back up to the PV & notice the shoppers going crazy -hoarding toilet paper & anything they can get their hands on. Felt like Armageddon. I headed out of L.A. on March 14th Saturday: Stopped over in Encinitas. March 15th Sunday my check engine light was on. Nothing I could do about it. I had just replaced something that was supposed to fix it. I stocked up on groceries & on March 16th Monday I continued south & passed by Jucumba Springs . I can see the wall from the Highway 8-the Mexican-USA border. I also attended the final mass at the Catholic church in La Jolla Sunday. Desert View Tower hike. Bunch of border patrol fellows pretty nice guys - looks like a decent job actually made it to Calexico Mexicali & then Yuma Arizona & also to their final Catholic Church mass. March 17th is a Tuesday -the Yuma McDonald's was closed to diners: take out only or drive-thru. St Patrick's Day Celebrations cancelled- pass thru the inspection station leaving Yuma at 9 am. 1057 turnout to Gilabend - I'm ready to go onward towards Tucson & then past Tucson. I actually went to the university there in Tucson -there was an angry biker- I don't know why. Drove around parts of Tucson I hadn't seen before. Stopped at the Catholic church in Tucson but it was closed as well.

Woke up early to make it to Big Bend National Park -arrived as the sun was rising & hiked to "The Window" - 5 miles round-trip (p49). This is where I encountered the rattlesnake while I was walking down the path- actually a fairly fast walk & there are these mementos on one side of the trail that the Mexicans put out to try to sell to the tourists; & so I'm looking at these souvenirs & suddenly I HEAR A RATTLE & the rattlesnake was on the left of the trail in the strike position. If I taken one more step literally he would have struck me. I think the snake was alarmed because I continued forward straight at it. Normally if that stuff had not been on the other side of the trail, I think I would have noticed it & would have backed off before it had to get into its aggressive position. My adrenaline was SO PUMPED UP from the close call it took a few moments to catch my breath. After backed off & caught my breath I stayed for several minutes & took pictures - that was fun. Then I hiked several different trails including Santa Elena Canyon which is very incredible & I took an old primitive road I think it's called the Old Maverick Road to exit the park, after which my air conditioning stopped working. For the rest of the trip I had NO AC. Made it back to Fort Stockton for the night. Next day Monday March 23: I began to pray4 every city that I passed thru - also sent out some postcards. I go to the McDonald's & as I'm pulling out a homeless man yells at me "Hey you have a flat tire ." sure enough. SO I jacked it up & put the spare on it. Then I start looking around for a replacement. They do things different here in Oregon. It's not so easy to go pick up a used tire or even just to get a patch or plug without a lot of drama. They charge more here too. So first I go over to the Les Schwab. They said they'll do it for free but then they made me wait 2 or 3 hours. And by the time they look at it they said "no we can't repair that tire ...too worn out." They could have told me that right away without making me wait 3 hours if they had just glanced at it. I wasted a lot of time at Les Schwab . They were NOT so nice. They acted nice originally, at least the lady did on the phone. Later I would have a much better experience at a Les Schwab in Idaho. So I ended up going over to the Walmart & bought some materials to plug tires do-it-yourself, DIY. And I managed to plug it, although the next morning it was flat again. I missed a tiny little pinhole. Fortunately this time I was able to drive ...(it wasn't totally flat ) over to a nearby place & they patched it (see more below) although they overcharged me as well (read more about that later). 5:23 leaving Coos Bay . I'm at the riverfront park by the "old fishing hole" at 7 pm. & my vehicle suddenly breaks down here in Kent Washington. I say a TON of prayers while I'm sitting there wondering what's going to happen. My prayer book is filled with repetitive prayers for "help God hear my prayer Lord"... I'm sitting here trying to find out what's wrong with my vehicle. I have to call for a tow truck ...finally got a tow truck. They take me over to General transmission & Auto Repair & I sleep there that night outside the repair shop .
đ&#x;Ž¸
Wake up July 7th Tuesday: The mechanic arrives on his motorcycle at 7:41 am. with Def Leppard playing on his radio. To make a long story short I called for another tow truck to take me somewhere else (read more below ) & I eventually connected to a place called Meineke ...a national chain & the first guy I talk to seems like a decent fellow. His name is Walter. I said IF I need a new fuel pump how much will u charge for labor ? but please do the diagnostics first to MAKE SURE that I do need a new fuel pump. He gave me a decent price & so I had them tow me over there from General transmission leaving Mark & Cindy behind. I wonder if they are originally from Chicago b/c they had a Cubs picture on their wall . He was a bit condescending. I didn't really feel comfortable staying there. He had his own tow truck and wanted to tow me to another place called Do-Rite Auto which wanted to charge $1,000 for a new fuel pump. Ridiculous. I also talked to another place I think the guy's name was Floyd. He told me about the inertia switch. I tried that but it didn't help- so they take me to look . Meineke. Customer named Rebecca at Meineke had that perfect "american girl" The bus is free in Kent Washington (which is next to Des Moines & Seatac & Federal Way I guess the whole area probably...public transit is free during covid )... or was on July 7th. It's pretty busy but Walter the manager is leaving early because it's his birthday & unfortunately a new guy comes in named Wyvern Hemphill. Meanwhile I take the free bus over to O'Reilly's & pick up a fuel pump ONLY IN CASE that's what it needs -hoping that when they do their diagnosis they might find out it's NOT the fuel pump . But since the original manager is gone there's a lack of communication with the Latino mechanic Edwin who is NOT the best mechanic in the shop. He gets assigned to my vehicle & he just starts going for the fuel pump WITHOUT doing any other tests, although later they would TRY to claim that he did do the tests (without proof).
đ&#x;’°
đ&#x;šŒ
đ&#x;‘§ óž“Ś
đ&#x;Ž‚
It was a pretty shoddy operation. He takes several hours to do the fuel pump & they make a big deal about it because they have to lower the gas tank and empty it etc Finally he puts it all back together in the car & it STILL DOESN'T START. It's doing the same thing, same sound ‌
đ&#x;‘Ž
And this is where I'M getting rather upset - although I control my anger. The guy in the office named Wyvern Hemphill finally comes out & starts taking a look at things & he tries to convince me that the fuel pump was no good after connecting the electric wires (multimeter?) to it (it actually DID show life). But I'm NOT convinced because the other mechanic, one of the good ones, already indicated that it WAS still good & Hemphill has NO proof that the bad technician did a diagnosis before he actually took the fuel pump apart. It's pretty shady. Then the owner talks to hemphill on the phone. & I talked to him- his name is Neil. He turned out to be a jerk too. Without knowing anything about the situation he says to me over the phone
20
đ&#x;‘Ž
"Your car has major problems". Wrong . So just to get out of there basically I ended up agreeing to pay a lesser amount for the fuel pump work ( but more than I should have paid for something I didn't need). Hemphill kept trying to convince me that it was a bad fuel pump, but I'm pretty sure it was NOT a bad fuel pump. You could argue that MAYBE I would need a new fuel pump in the near future because of the mileage on my vehicle & it's the original fuel pump but you never know. Sometimes they last a lot longer than you think. Really the ethical thing would be to cancel the labor cost altogether. ALL the labor should have been FREE. Remember that I provided the fuel pump. I went in & purchased it myself to save $100. so they had NO parts cost . Sometimes these businesses have to bite the bullet & simply say "Sorry, we messed up". Furthermore the mechanic failed to do everything properly & so the gas gauge doesn't work. Now I have to use paper & pen to keep track of the mileage. Its really crazy. Also during their "panic attack" when they were trying everything else in the last few seconds of the workday ... because my battery was getting low from trying to start it so many times the bad mechanic (or technician ) named Edwin comes over with the battery booster & almost hooks up the red & black (pos, neg) backwards ! Wyvern has to correct him. That tells you everything. This same technician is ashamed of himself. He just wants to get out of there. Then he takes his shirt off for some reason & they're still trying to check things. He's running around with his shirt off. His beer belly sticking out. Total lack of professionalism SO now I'm waiting for another tow truck at 7:15 pm. I should have demanded that they pay for the tow, not use my own tow service. They take me to Bowen-scarff Ford. But in the morning Bowen tells me they can't look at it until July 14th. Today is July 8th. SO I called the other nearby Ford dealer, Sound Ford, ...guy answered by the name of Manh says yes they can take a look at it but there's $150 diagnostic fee. So I call the tow truck & wait for them to come again. Meanwhile as I'm waiting at Bowen Ford a technician walks by & I try to talk to him & he won't even acknowledge me . I thought he was DEAF at first, but then I saw him talking to somebody so I realized for some reason he's giving me a total cold shoulder treatment & I've never even met him.
đ&#x;‘Ž
He won't even turn & acknowledge my presence. That was very unnerving, very chilling. Even unhuman. I get the feeling that the morale is very low at Bowen-Scarf Ford. Nonetheless I leave Bowen & they tow me over to Sound Ford, a much better place. I arrive around 10 am. & about an hour later they tell me that ALL that was NEEDED was to clean the mass airflow sensor & the car is running again. good grief . July 9th is a Thursday: FINALLY the drama from the vehicle repair(s) is over & at least I can drive again, although now I have to check my mileage every time I fill the tank to know how much gas is remaining. To be on the safe side I don't want to drive more than 300 miles after I fill the tank , although arguably maybe I could make it 400 on a full tank. Back to evangelism & exploration - Cedar River Trail Park 10:30, Renton Washington. Gene Coulon Memorial beach park - & Washington Trail trailhead long walk around 11:30 to 1230. New Castle Beach Park 12:53. It's a nice place on Lake Washington. I compose a review of my experience at Meineke Auto Repair, then take a hike on Cole Creek Trail in Bellevue 3 to 3:30 & then over to Lake Boren Park. They have a huge fishing dock.4 pm. The City of Newcastle is next to Bellevue. I'm still trying to get confirmation that the IRS received my tax return. I still have NOT received my stimulus check. I sent the tax return in March from Charleston North Carolina. Then I take the Cold Creek Falls Hike, a nice natural area 5 to 7 pm. There's also an old Nike missile base up there & North

One of those perfect moments. I pull in there hot & dry & go wading out into the calm blue lake in the beautiful city of Sandpoint Idaho. July 17th is Friday: I slept in Sandpoint Idaho. Praise the Lord. I go to the Walmart & buy some food. My engine overheats at 9:53 am. in Bronx Idaho, north of Sandpoint. It's been 4 days since the last overheat. A pickup just drove by with a Confederate flag. Now a GIRL with a marine shirt actually stops & offers to help. I tell her that I think I'll be alright- I just need to let it cool down & add some water. She drives away. That was nice of her, brave too. Probably because she's a marine. The car actually overheated twice in Bronx Idaho. I had to wait twice & add more water 10:30. It seems to be okay again. I parked by the Burger King next to the Walmart for a little while thinking what I should do. I give a can of peas to the homeless lady at 11 am. A social worker seemed to be trying to help her at the same time. Then I drive up towards the Schweitzer Ski Resort - supposedly the largest ski resort in Idaho. #PrayTheNews : they say RBG the liberal justice has liver cancer. Lots of Huckleberries. They're ripe. I noticed people were picking them by the side of the road as I drove up to the ski resort. Back down to the City Beach, I take another swim & cast my line on the lake walk. Spring Point Recreation Area 5:15. Mineral Point trail near Lost Lake. pm. 8 hours hiking. Leaving Estes Park area- highway 34 west. Rainbow curve- 2 miles above sea level 315 . Colorado River Trailhead 354, Holzwarth historic site 357. Bowen- Baker trailhead. Coyote Valley Trail 35. Moose-watching crowd by side of road gave me nasty looks, but I was driving the speed limit as I came around the curve . There was no way to anticipate as I came around the curve that there was going to be a crowd stopping to stare at a moose. Nonetheless I stopped safely without endangering anybody & it was just the one latino kid angrily staring at me without cause (he was virtue signaling) 4:02 pm. Green Mountain Trailhead . City of Hot Sulphur Springs 513pm. Now I'm taking Highway 40. Looks like a lot of nice fishing spots on the Colorado River along Highway 40 but I don't want to stop with the condition my engine is in (or radiator). Now at City of Kremmling 532- this is a rafting town & a nice butte here as well . Wolford Mountain Recreation Area & Lake 541. This long stretch here is the East West Summit ...now Rabbit Ears Pass at 6:07 & Dumont lake at 6:12. There is a long downhill coasting area coming into Steamboat Springs. Spent the night here. August 18th Tuesday: I slept in Steamboat Springs. Before leaving the town I drove by the ski resort & then passed onward. Another memorable moment here : The Smiling lady in a pickup truck at the Walmart & then I saw her at the gas station as well. There must be an Amish community around here. I saw several Amish inside the Walmart, City of Maybelle 1208. After Steamboat on Highway 40 there's some river areas but west of Craig it becomes more & more desolate almost desert-like & then you come to Dinosaur National Monument east entrance. I went up the hill by Plughat Butte & my radiator really started acting up- even after topping it off, it was very hot, steaming from a new area . City of Dinosaur 225. ENTERING UTAH at 230. Although I had to go to the BLM Visitor Center which had a sign on the door to go to the convention center (I wish they had that on their website, or did i miss it ?) Nonetheless I was NOT chosen. There were about 10 chosen from 30 applicants- so 33% chance.

Lots of literature about the many different things to go see around Kanab including the famous Horseshoe Bend, but also a place called Johnson Canyon where they filmed a lot of Hollywood movies back in the day. Also Marble Canyon, Cascade Falls, Kanab ruins, lower Hackberry, Petroglyphs, Catstair, Lick Wash, Slot Canyon ,Vermilion Cliffs , Wah Weep Hoodoos etc. Although I've been to Bryce & Zion I never took the time to slowly but surely explore the area around Kanab & still hadn't been to the North Rim, but I will be in about an hour from now ! Sad. That's the first time a bird has ever flown under my car. It tried to outrun me. Normally I don't worry about hitting birds - they're usually in control, but this one tried to fly straight forward in front of me & it went under my car & died 11:14 am. I saw it bouncing in the road in my rear-view mirror. It really did make me sad. Highway 67 to the North Rim. Nice Meadow & trees on way to Grand Canyon North Rim 11:40. 13 miles to the North Rim. Praying4 Kody & her family at Craig's Pitstop. First view of North Rim & Bright Angel Trail. Funny that they have the same trail name on the North as they do on the South rim- refill water 2 pm. Cape Royal Road. Vista Encantada 237, hiked Cape Royal & to Angels window at 3:46. Imperial Point . There's that bearded guy on the Harley again. He came up to me & asked me why they didn't make him pay when he went through the entrance. I said "Maybe she likes you..". he joked "I am a likeable guy" . Later I realized they just didn't want to take his cash (he had a $50 dollar bill). Because of the #covid19 they probably didn't want to touch it. Not sure if I missed a good chance to do some evangelism - . nonetheless I'll be praying for the "north rim Harley guy." The North Rim general store & gas station in Fredonia Arizona is NOT a nice place

get my receipt but I had to stand in the line with about 10 tourists from some other country buying candy & pop & they wouldn't put me in front of the line just to finish my gas. This is one of those really antiquated gas stations that doesn't allow you to use your credit card at the pump. You have to come in & have them run it inside & then come back for your receipt . Actually I realized they DON'T run your credit card until AFTER you pump the gas. However they did accommodate a lady who I saw come in AFTER me. This really ticked me off . My car was running. I was just hoping it wasn't overheating . I thought I was in good shape because of what they did at Craig's Pitstop in Vernal but trouble was about to happen an hour away down the road (see below). I don't really like these fake people who try to control you by calling you "sir" . They call you sir if you've been a "good boy." It's like giving you a pat on the head. I'm 53 years old. Really creepy types of people. Vermilion Cliffs are incredible - jaw dropping. Now passing thru "Cliff Dwellers" area & some amazing boulders & my car overheated 60 seconds after the boulders. I parked on the road for 30 minutes. No room to pull off, about 9 miles before Marble Canyon. I praise God even while I am sitting there waiting for the engine to cool down as I stare at the Vermilion Cliffs in awe.

I thought about the Western author Louie L'amour & wondered if this is an area that inspired his writing. I used to love reading his books . So my car cooled down & I managed to keep going & arrived at the famous Navajo Bridge. That's another amazing place with huge high Cliffs down to the Colorado River. Also near Lee's Ferry. It used to be a ferry landing before they built the bridge. I'm praying4 the Navajo Nation. I've been praying for a lot of different Native -American groups as I passed through their areas across the country. Now passing by Horseshoe Bend- $10 fee to park in the parking lot . You can actually park on the road down a little ways & walk in but it's getting too late- too dark. So I went to the Walmart in Page Arizona very VERY hot here . This is where all the hotels are as well, right by Lake Powell. I decided NOT to stay in Page Arizona for the night. Too hot . I kept driving west back towards Kanab. My prayer-of-the-day is for hope or new hope. Final stretch to make it to Los Angeles through all the extreme heat . I will have to make it through the Las Vegas desert during the hottest part of the day. I start driving again early around 4:40 am. A little fox crossed my path on the road- it stared at me for a few seconds & then disappeared into the brush. City of Cane Beds at 5:12. Colorado City 5:18, Apple Valley, City of Hurricane 6:27 . City of St George 6:39. I think we also passed thru the Kaibab Paiute Indian reservation. August 20th Thursday cont. Littlefield, Beaver Dam, Mesquite at 7:11 am. Moapa River Indian reservation. Glendale UT. Ely 7:30. Apex Summit 7:35. Nellis Air Force Base. North Las Vegas. Stopped at the Walmart & completed video uploads . Stopped at the O'Reilly's to ✔ check my engine code. Still the oxygen sensor. Went to a different Walmart & bought some coolant for the trip across Las Vegas to L.A.

Did some evangelism at the Las Vegas Strip. That's the first time I've seen the Trump Hotel. Do they have a casino in there as well? There's Little Caesars Casino & Bellagio &Treasure Island & many many many more . #RepentAndBeBaptized - Through Las Vegas as I pray4 the City of Kanab & Kody Craig's Pitstop in Vernal Utah. Now I'm also experiencing what they called "delayed engagement" in shifting . I wonder about those two who offered to give me a tow. Were they sincere ? 11:15 now out of Las Vegas on way to LA. the final stretch. City of Primm is the

last Casino town before the California state line. I think this is Whiskey Pete's Casino. I bought some frozen peas & frozen broccoli at the Walmart to keep my phone from overheating & to keep my back cool while I'm driving. Spraying water on my face with the water bottle every 10 minutes because I don't have AC . & I also am required have the heat on full blast to minimize overheating. First overheat at 11:30 am- waited 45 minutes for the engine to cool down. Now I'm driving again at 12:15. HEAR my prayer Lord . I can't do it alone but I CAN do all things through Christ ! Watching some of these truck drivers- they actually have it pretty nice. I don't see any of them with their windows open. ALL of them have powerful AC systems. And they can pull over anytime they want to take a nap as well with the engine running and the AC on. If I tried doing that I would be overheating in a few minutes. My AC doesn't work anyways even if I tried to use it . 12:25 - made it over the big hill towards Baker that's a BIG gradual uphill. BIG long coast down into the city of Baker. I put my vehicle in neutral & didn't have to touch the gas or brakes for several minutes. City of Baker is the home of the giant thermometer & reading 117 degrees Fahrenheit as I coast into town. Looking for a shady spot to park but there are none. You'd think after all these years they would have planted a few palm trees or other types of trees that you can find some shade under but Baker looks the same as it did 25 years ago when I passed thru. I finally find a place with some shade -it's an old abandoned hotel. The water in my bottle was so warm it made a nice hot coffee ☕. Back on the road again around 2:25. Temperature gauge is rising again past mid point, so I pull off again halfway to Barstow. I'm driving again at 2:48. I take another break at 3:15- driving again at 3:42 . City of Yermo. Finally made it to Barstow. Shopping at the Walmart for about an hour- cool down-& upload some videos. Back on the road again back to the land of A-holes. The way they drive here I can only think of one word: LA-Holes.

Coasting through the Cajon Summit. Long downhill put the car in neutral. Didn't touch the gas for 5 minutes. Now I'm on the 91 freeway at 8:36 pm. & I hear a song on the radio called "almost home" on Christian radio. I would call that a "synchronicity." Literally, a few moments later I am home. I check my mail August 21 is Friday: it is TOO HOT to stay in Bellflower so I go out to Sunset Beach. I start taking care of appointments and things like that. I call my doctor about the shoulder examination. I call my auto insurance company & make sure that I'm paid off for the year. I leave an email for the Iowa State Patrol to make a complaint about the Iowa Trooper who gave me a frivolous seatbelt citation. It's disgusting how much they charge you for those seatbelts citations. $135. & he didn't even wear a mask . What a hypocrite . Saturday ...family reunion !
