ranville Street's newest store may be sweeter than all the rest. Literally. Ricardo's Kandy Korner opened for business on Friday, July 22 and owner Karmuddin "Ricardo" Rizaie says it's a big one. "It is B.C.'s biggest candy store," he says. Along with the usual imported sweets, cereals and exotic candies (like a five-pound gummy bear), the store's highlight is its bulk selection, Rizaie says. "No stores really do bulk candy like this, with that kind of selection," he says, listing a few that are hard to find as bulk candies. "That's how you become B.C.'s biggest." The chance to be the biggest in B.C. just came by chance, as the space was available and Rizaie saw the opportunity, especially located downtown on the popular Granville Street strip. "This one, just being in Vancouver, finding a big space, I thought it was awesome to make that happen," he says. "If you want to be B.C,'s biggest you gotta be in Vancouver, right?" It's the second candy store for Rizaie, who already operates the Kandy Korner in White Rock. By Brendan Kergin

I come from the Dominican Republic, where there’s not a lot of opportunities, but you can create your own opportunity. And you guys, if you’re hearing me right now, don’t give up. Always get better, at least one thing every day. Always go home with one new thing and one thing that you think you’ve improved. You're gonna find a lot of people who don't make it and they’re gonna tell you what you can’t do. But that's just because they didn't do it. So don't give up. Because you can have fun, but at the same time, you have to respect the game. And some guys that I grew up seeing and love the way that they play are Jose Reyes and Derek Jeter, the Captain” I asked him about playing baseball in Vancouver: “I’ve been playing in different cities, playing baseball in whatever city is fun, because you do what you love and this is a beautiful, beautiful game to play. But at the same time, playing for Vancouver, I think is something special, because we play for a nation, you know? We play for an entire country,” Berroa said. Because I’m a nerd and a stickler for the rules, I wanted to know his opinion about the Pitch Clock: “I really respect that," Berroa explained. "Because [the clock] is something that the MLB and MiLB are doing to get a better show for the fans. But at the same time it’s something that we have to adjust to. Because that’s something that accelerates you a little bit…so you have to be ready in your mind because it’s something that speeds you up a little bit.” In closing, I wanted to know if he had any advice for young, aspiring

s a fan, I always gravitate toward ballplayers who seemingly play the game with their hearts on their sleeves and a smile on their faces. The ones that exude passion, joy and fun in every at bat and on every play. Steward Berroa is one of those ballplayers and I had a chance to sit down with the Vancouver Canadians outfielder (#19) before a game during the last homestand. Born in the Dominican Republic, the 23-year-old has been in the Blue Jays system since 2016. A well travelled ballplayer, Berroa has played in Dunedin (Florida), Buffalo (New York) and New Hampshire (New Hampshire) just to name a few landing spots. For now, we have him here in Vancouver, and fans of baseball are luckier for it. What follows are a few snippets from our conversation, edited down a bit because my evil editors won’t increase my word count. I asked him to describe his style of play and he confirmed what I see when I watch him on the field: “Honestly, I love to have fun. We never know when it’s going to be the last time we’re gonna be playing this beautiful game. No matter what, no matter how I just like to find a way to have fun.” It’s no secret that Berroa is one of my

2. A very unfortunate schooner There've been several ships to carry the name Vancouver, like the HMCS Vancouver (one of the first ships with a name referencing something Canadian) and the barque Vancouver, but the Hudson's Bay Company schooner Vancouver appears to have been the unluckiest. Built in 1826, long before the city in Canada

3. A mountain in New Zealand As George Vancouver was an explorer who spent lots of time in the Pacific, and despite many things already had indigenous names, there are a few geographic features that bear his name, including a couple lakes, a river and a couple of mountains. One of these is Mount Vancouver in the Southern Alps. While that all sounds very European, it's actually on New Zealand's South Island. In fact, it's the fourth highest named summit in the country. 4. A Japanese coffee roaster While Seattle's coffee culture is well known, Vancouver is a fan of the brewed bean drink too, and others recognize this. There are actually several coffee shops that show up on Google Maps bearing the name Vancouver, including a shop in the middle of Viet Nam, two places in Istanbul, and a cafe in a small Colombian town. 5. A chain of Mexican wings shops Coffee shops might make sense to some, but Vancouver's chicken wing culture is hardly world famous. Despite that, in Mexico you can go to several locations of Vancouver Wings. And by several...there appear to be dozens, according to the company's website, and they're heading abroad with restaurants in San Diego and Spain. The name is actually inspired by Vancouver, BC; the founder had lived here. He was a fan of a local place's wing Wednesday, but when went on a Monday and got a higher bill, he decided there was an opportunity there. He went on to open the first in Guadalajara in 2009. 1. A Motown Band featuring Tommy Chong on guitar (Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers) If you've never heard of Cheech and Chong, you're probably among Vancouver Is Awesome's younger readers. The comedy double act was huge in the 70s and 80s, often with bits based on being stoner hippies. In the 90s Tommy Chong continued in comedy with regular appearances in That 70s Show among others. But before all that, he was in a band called The Vancouvers. The act's full name was actually Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, and they actually had a minor hit with "Does Your Mama Know About Me" (and had a hand in the Jackson 5 becoming stars). The band formed when Chong and his bandmates were in San Francisco as Little Daddy and the Bachelors. They met Bobby Taylor, and the new band followed. Chong and another band member ended up getting fired when they were late for a gig. They had been delayed while getting green cards to play in the USA.

existed, it was a product of Fort Vancouver (now Vancouver Washington). According to records they used unseasoned timber that quickly warped and wouldn't hold oakum, which was used like caulking in ships. In 1829 it still hadn't been launched; in 1830 it was finally seaworthy and travelled between Langley and Oahu for a bit. The good times didn't last, as it was almost wrecked in 1832 after it was carried out to see in a gale. A couple years later, in March of 1834, its story ended when it wrecked on Point Rose off of Haida Gwaii.

ancouver is the name of the city you're probably in, or at least near right now. But it's not just the name of this fair city. It's travelled this world far and wide, with origins in a Dutch town near the German border. From there it was spread, famously, by English explorer George Vancouver as British imperialism saw him sailing the seas. Nowadays there are a lot of things named after him, either directly (like Vancouver, Washington) or indirectly (Vancouver Island University). And while you may know a lot of things called Vancouver, there's a good chance you haven't heard of these.

LETTER: Homeless Whack-a-Mole

ROB KRUYT

T

hose who live within the intersecting horrors of addiction, mental illness and homelessness live lives of danger and indignity on a daily basis - unwilling actors in a complicated tragedy that is played out on the streets of every modern city. Like it or not, these unfortunate people exist and they cannot be wished away using City bylaws. Perhaps it would help if the fundamental problem were carved in stone somewhere close to City Hall; homeless people do not have homes. So..... if you close Portside encampment, they'll move to Strathcona Park; close that one and they will re-appear on East Hastings. They aren't doing this to annoy people, they simply have no other options. Now that the tents on East Hastings are being shut down, it does not require great effort to predict what will happen next. The criminality and violence associated with uncontrolled camps present risks for everyone but those risks don't disappear when the camp is shut down - the risks simply move somewhere else. Permanent protected housing will take many years to build so the only feasible interim

solution is to establish organized tent cities with the emphasis on 'organized'. Each would require a medical clinic that includes mental health and safe injection facilities. A permanent Police presence would be essential along with water/waste disposal and a cooking area. With effort they could provide a clean and safe life for terribly disadvantaged people. The cost would be substantial but take a drive down East Hastings and imagine the cost of emergency responses facing Ambulance and Police every day of the year. Add in the possibility of reducing daily overdose deaths and street violence then tent cities should start to look like an idea worth exploring. Dr Mike Seear

Sushi restaurant hidden inside local craft brewery

W

hen Matt Ryan of Electric Bicycle Brewing travels, his food experiences are often the focus of his tales when he returns home to Vancouver. One-of-a-kind eats, unique experiences, and a little element of the unexpected can make a restaurant, bar, or taproom visit memorable no matter where you are. Ryan and the team at the eclectic brewery had just that kind of "wow" factor in mind when they came up with a new food concept to offer at Electric Bicycle's Mount Pleasant tasting room. Known for being a little left of centre with a menu of fruitand sour-forward brews, the Electric Bicycle crew have made their mark being kind of different. Though the taproom had been serving up grilled cheese sandwiches to pair with their beers and neon-powered nostalgic vibes, Ryan tells Vancouver Is Awesome the team wanted to find a food concept that would stand out among their peers and - for more practical purposes - be something they could execute given the constraints of the space - as in, it doesn't have a full kitchen. The answer: Sushi. Sushi Radio is the name of Electric Bicycle's new food program, and it's got a tight menu of super-appealing dishes that Ryan says were inspired by some of the team's favourite items from around Vancouver and beyond. What is on the menu at Sushi Radio? Served on an eclectic array of vintage dishware (with the pink chopsticks presented in an empty Spam can), Sushi

available Thursday through Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the tasting room, with plans to expand soon to seven days a week, and then to include lunch service (sushi is underrepresented in the neighbourhood, which has increasingly become home to several offices). You can follow @sushiradio_yvr and @electricbicyclebrewing for more information and updates. By Lindsay William-Ross

Radio offers a fun assortment of rolls, pieces, and easily shared bites that go (almost surprisingly) well with Electric Bicycle's brews. Among Sushi Radio's offerings are sushi bar basics like seaweed or sunomono salad, as well as chilled edamame, but with a welcome and delicious twist: lemon zest. Alongside fresh sashimi and nigiri pieces, you'll find Sushi Radio's iterations of some familiar items with cult followings. One is the two-piece Spam Musubi (now you know where they get those Spam cans) which features a slice of spam with pineapple, which Ryan says should remind you of eating Hawaiian pizza (minus the cheese and tomato, of course). If you're among the legions of diners missing Cactus Club's late, great sushi pockets, fear not: Sushi Radio has its take on the legendary retired menu item. To round out the menu, Sushi Radio has an assortment of rolls, cones, and pressed sushi, including fun house specialties like the Lemon Box - pressed sushi pieces with salmon and scallop and thin slices of lemon. The quirkiness of having a small craft brewery outfit serving up sushi - instead of the expected salty or greasy standards - is absolutely deliberate for Electric Bicycle; after all, it's a taproom that has a plastic skeleton's parts tucked inside an Instagram-worthy floral wall installation to go with pours of tangy Technodrome Tart Pale Ale with Pink Guava and the super juicy Atomic Jam Raspberry sour. Does A&W's revived Whistle Dog live up to the hype?

but in a press release management notes there will be more freedom to play all sorts of music, "from Johnny Cash to The Notorious B.I.G." "There’ll also be lots of 'Woah, they’re playing THAT?!' moments, too. That’s because our hosts are free to play anything they like (I mean…what could go wrong?)," states Pattison Media, the station's parent company, in a press release. They're calling it the "evolution of radio in Vancouver," noting they want to grow a community around the station. "Our on-air hosts and listeners are at the very centre of everything. We call our community 'The NOW! Family,'" they say in the release. "And because our hosts have no rules…they might talk about anything, at any time…and for as long as they want to." Pattison Media has two other NOW!radio stations: one in Edmonton and one in Winnipeg. Previously 102.7 FM was the Peak, an alternative rock station. The Peak is continuing on as a streaming and HD radio station; some of the hosts have moved over as well. It stopped broadcasting on regular airwaves the morning of Monday, July 25, replaced by spacey, ambient music, interspersed with ads for the upcoming NOW! launch. NOW! is the third radio brand to launch in Vancouver since June 30. That's when SONiC Radio launched on 104.9 FM, replacing KiSS, which had gone off the air earlier in the week and was replaced by a non-stop loop of "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine, a stunt that garnered international attention. Then on July 18 the Wave revived 98.3 FM, which had been Roundhouse Radio until 2018, at which point it went unused until the smooth jazz station launched this year. By Brendan Kergin

here are fewer passions that ignite as strongly as the devotion to discontinued menu items, and it seems A&W's Whistle Dog is no exception. The Canadian fast-food chain dropped a limited-run reissue of the cult favourite - a sort of jazzed-up hot dog - and people are definitely going wild. Beloved for decades but discontinued in 2017, the Whistle Dog is legendary among its legions of fans, including some who have gone to all sorts of lengths to cajole the company into putting it back on the menu. "Since its departure, Whistle Dog fans have started petitions, written songs, rallied support on the radio, and filled up A&W's comment sections on social media, all in an attempt to bring the iconic hot dog back," describes a media release about the Whistle Dog. What is the A&W Whistle Dog? The Whistle Dog is a hot dog that has been sliced down the middle - butterflied - before cooking. A&W serves theirs "nested in a toasted bun with relish, topped with real cheddar cheese, and bacon." The name likely comes from the hot dog's resemblance to a long, thin, cylindrical dog whistle, and in Canada, a "whistle dog" is largely synonymous with a butterflied hot dog topped with bacon and cheese, thanks to A&W, though other venues have had their versions on the menu (and many a nostalgic fan has made a copycat version at their family BBQ or for a cheeky at-home meal). The Whistle Dog returns in 2022 To coincide with A&W's teaming up with the Toronto Blue Jays - aka Canada's MLB team and, by default, Vancouver's team - the fast-food company released the Whistle Dog on menus nationwide starting July 25. The chain says the Whistle Dog's return is a limited-time special, and has a teaser about a short film (a "dog-umentary" if you will, and they do) about the menu item dropping online in August. (If this speaks to you, note you can view "Bring Back the Whistle Dog" Aug. 12 via A&W's social channels and YouTube. You do you, hot dog fan.) Taste test: Reviewing the Whistle Dog Personally, I had never heard of a Whistle Dog. I know, where have I been? (Short answer, outside of Canada.) But the V.I.A. newsroom got pretty riled up at the mere mention of the hot dog and its current return, so I had to try one for myself. Spurred on by shared memories of the Whistle Dog, its seemingly significant role in people's lives, and how butterflying a hot dog can lead to glorious crispy-edged results thanks to a bigger surface area, let's just say my tastebuds were primed. Spoiler alert: This was not a dreamy encounter. I don't think the kitchen crew at the A&W location in Vancouver I visited feel quite the same devotion to the love and lore of the Whistle Dog as the people who cherish CONTINUES ON PAGE 11

memories of eating it. I think they were more about filling a hot dog order as fast as they could. Sadly, the hot dog itself, though sliced as mandated, did not have any crispy edges. In fact, and you can probably see this coming, it was overall pretty flaccid. Decent flavour, on the juicier side, no snap whatsoever. The bacon was passable, but the cheese was firm and not particularly melty. Cold cheese plus hot dog equals sadface. I reported back to my Whistle Dog enthusiast colleagues the following hot (dog) take: If the

Whistle Dog is like whistling, this was like when you try to whistle but you just spit a little. (Sad trombone.) Now, to be fair, even a bad hot dog has its place in the food ecosystem, and this wasn't a bad hot dog. It just wasn't all it was hyped up to be. And I had probably Vancouver's toughest food critic with me as a dining companion (it's my 9-year-old son) and he gave the Whistle Dog an energetic thumbs up. Perhaps that is the target market for the next generation of Whistle Dog devotees. By Lindsay William-Ross

Save your summer with these one-tank family road trips

S

chool is out and travel restrictions have eased. After a long stretch of time spent closer to home, everyone seems eager to escape the city to explore somewhere new. As a result, travel is at an all-time high, which unfortunately means clogged airport cues, spiked prices, and fully-booked accommodations. So where can you go this summer that promises family fun without the headaches of cancelled flights, lost luggage, and long lines? Depending on the fuel consumption of your vehicle, one full tank of gas can give you an average of 300-600kms on the road. With that in mind, here are three, one-tank family road trip ideas that will take you to new adventures–without breaking the bank. From a cross-border beach escape to a snow-free slopeside escape, these spots are sure to save your summer. GETTY

Cannon Beach, Oregon Distance from Vancouver: 555 km / 6 hours In Oregon’s quaint town of Cannon Beach, a long stretch of coastline summons surfers and reveals low-tide marine life–a beachcomber’s paradise. And while there’s lots to love about the beach-side town, the journey is definitely part of the adventure. Best places to stop along the way: Be sure to veer off I5 for a spin along the scenic route, Highway 101, which takes you through the northwest stretch of the Oregon Coast. Before you cross the border into Oregon, marvel at Mount Saint Helens, an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1980. See one of the iconic coastal lighthouses (Cape Disappointment Lighthouse near Astoria and Tillamook Rock Lighthouse are on the way), and then stop in Seaside, the first beach town that you’ll hit on your cruise along the Oregon Coast. There, take a stroll along the oceanfront promenade where you’ll find

everything from unique boutiques, a large arcade, a vintage carousel, miniature golf, and bumper cars–a hub for family fun. Things to do in Cannon Beach with kids: Search for sand treasures, try surfing, take a dip, or fly a kite on the beach–the destination’s highlight. Head to Haystack Rock, the third-tallest intertidal structure of its kind in the world and a landmark spotted in the cult-classic movie The Goonies, and then stroll through the shops, nosh on fish n’ chips, and cool off with a cone in town. Pacific Marine Circle Route, Vancouver Island, B.C. Distance from Swartz Bay Terminal: 289 km / 5 hours (to complete the loop) Venture beyond Victoria with a road trip

along the Pacific Marine Circle Route, a cruise that takes you along the southern coast of Vancouver Island from Sooke to Port Renfrew, to Lake Cowichan, to Sidney, with a slew of parks, harbours, old-growth forests, and thrilling adventures to enjoy as you ride through varied landscapes. Best places to stop along the way: On this adventurous road trip, the journey is the destination. Stop at Sooke Provincial Park for a hike and a dip in the rockpools. Take a trek through Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park, and stroll amongst the oldest and biggest collection of Douglas fir trees in Canada, and then head to Horne Lake Cakes for a one-ofa-kind spelunking excursion on a multi-cave tour of the area’s underworld.

Silver Star Mountain Resort, North Okanagan, B.C. Driving distance from Vancouver: 465km / 5 hours While it’s a popular ski destination during the cooler months, Silver Star offers lots of summer fun for families during the warmer months as well. Alpine adventures are aplenty, and lively festivals pop up throughout the season. Best places to stop along the way: Choose your own adventure with two routes to get you to your final destination. Highway 3 takes you along the slower, more scenic route (via Kelowna) and tends to be the more popular choice. On this route, consider a stop to stretch your legs with a short walk in Manning Park. Pop into Penticton for some fun on the lake, or to pick up some peaches from a roadside fruit stand to enjoy on the way. Take in the scenery at Skaha Lake, and then stop at Tickleberry’s, the area’s most popular spot for ice cream. Things to do in Silver Star with kids: Downhill biking is an obvious draw, and lessons and trails are available to suit all levels. But you don’t need to be a biker to enjoy the area. Kids will love the self-guided Gnome Roam, where a gentle hike reveals hidden gnome friends around Brewer’s Pond. Take a ride up the Des Schumann Summit Express Gondola and take in views from the peak, or head into Vernon, only a 20-minute drive away, and enjoy a day at the waterslides. Fun festivals include the Crankworx Summer Series bike festival (July 28-31) which features live music, art, food, and world-class riding, and the inaugural Silver Star Summer Wine Festival (August 11-14) which showcases the best wine and food in the Okanagan.

VPD: mental health contributing factor in 73 per cent of ‘stranger assaults’

N QMUNITY to get new space to serve queer community

T

he City of Vancouver has announced that QMUNITY will receive a new space to enhance delivery of their community programs. QMUNITY is a non-profit organization working to create a safe space and improve the lives of LGBTQ2SAI+ people in Vancouver through community initiatives. The space will be located in a 17-storey mixed-use building alongside 154 social housing units on 981 Davie St. Construction is expected to begin within the next year and should be completed in 2025. "This new permanent location will help

QMUNITY expand their work and reach even more people. And perhaps most importantly, it will be a visible meeting place, a tangible symbol of how taking up space – real physical space – matters," said Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart in a statement. The new location will provide office administration and multi-purpose spaces to accommodate much-needed programming, including culturally safe gatherings, workshops, counselling and educational events, details a press release from city council.
