he world of professional skateboarding has always been a source of captivating films about its unique characters, and a Vancouverproduced short documentary can now be ranked among the best of them. 'Joe Buffalo' by filmmaker Amar Chebib brings to mind the powerful storytelling of Jacob Rosenberg's 'Waiting for Lightning' which culminates in Danny Way's feat of jumping the Great Wall of China, as well as Matthew J. Powers' inspirational 'Never Been Done' about Jon Comer—the world's first pro skater who lived with a prosthetic leg. It's told from a first-person perspective with Buffalo narrating his own story. And what a story it is. Buffalo became a professional skateboarder in 2019, and was the first Indian Residential School survivor to do so. While the arc of a pro's career generally starts when they're in their early 20s and ends when they're in their early 40s, Buffalo's begins at the age of 41. His statement, “skateboarding was definitely a saviour,” is a theme throughout the film which ends on an incredibly hopeful note after revealing its character's struggles with intergenerational trauma, and his ultimate triumph in becoming a powerful role model and an inspiration for others. Director Chebib is no stranger to working with subjects with trauma, and helping to carefully tell their stories. His work with Syrian refugees on his feature documentary 'Wajd' informs an approach he describes as allowing subjects to have "a hand in

telling their own stories as a means of decolonization, healing, and empowerment." The cinematography is by Liam Mitchell, a friend of the subject's for over two decades. Their familiarity comes across on the screen, as Buﬀalo is just as comfortable doing a backside lipslide on a handrail as he is speaking about his path in life. The soundtrack and overall sound design is the work of Matt Drake and paid intern Kaitlyn Redcrow. Their craftwork elevates the production to the next level, delivering the last blow in a one-two-three punch of great direction, visuals, and sound. And, of course, an incredible story. Pay parking returning to Granville Island

ll-day free parking at Granville Island is coming to an end. Beginning May 1, mid-day visitors will once again be required to pay to park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free day parking was ﬁrst implemented as a temporary measure last year to help support Granville Island businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will remain in eﬀect until April 30. "Revenue loss from temporary free parking was intended to support those businesses, artists and makers working on Granville Island," explained a notice posted to Granville Island's website. Re-introducing pay parking will help ensure spaces are available for Island customers, the notice added. "Where we would expect parking to be abundant due to the current travel restrictions, we are instead experiencing a high level of vehicles parking without supporting businesses on Granville

Island. From employees of surrounding neighborhood businesses, to multiple groups parking to only ride their bikes along the seawall, and boaters gone for days and weeks at a time. This, unfortunately, has resulted in a lack of parking near the Public Market for shoppers, the docks for kayak, paddle board rentals and patios, and the artisans, restaurants and shops across the Island." Keeping parking free until 11 a.m. also oﬀers regular visitors the option to shop earlier in the day, while free parking from 6 p.m. onwards serves restaurant guests visiting the Island after the Public Market has closed for the day. The decision was made in consultation with Island merchants and business owners, Granville Island management said. Pay parking will be enforced by EasyPark. Rates will be set at $1 per hour from Monday to Friday, and $2 per hour on weekends and holidays. By Megan Lalonde

The settlement provides certain compensation to class members who are or become Eligible Claimants and who timely submit all forms and documentation under the Settlement Agreement, less deductions for legal fees. Class members who are eligible and submit approved claims could receive $100,000 if they have undergone a single revision or $120,000 if they have undergone a bilateral revision, subject to reductions for length of time the device was in place and other things outlined in the settlement agreement. Eligible class members who have undergone either a single or bilateral revision and have experienced certain additional complications, including extraordinary income loss, may receive additional funds up to $40,000 as set out in the settlement agreement. Amounts may also be payable to spouses of approved claimants. Details on eligibility and the amounts approved claimants may receive are in the settlement agreement which can be viewed on class counsel’s website. For any individuals who are members of both the Crisante Ontario ASR Class Action and this Wilson British Columbia ASR Class Action and who are Eligible Claimants in this BC class action: the Ontario court will shortly be asked to approve a settlement in the Crisante Ontario class action. A person who is a member of both class actions will only obtain one recovery. They will need to seek settlement recovery from the Crisante Ontario ASR Class Settlement Program unless the Crisante Ontario ASR Class Settlement Program is not approved before the last payment has to be made under the Wilson British Columbia ASR Settlement Program. the annual Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtans which put Metro Vancouver on the world map as the largest Vaisakhi celebrations outside of India. We have seen it in times of grief while holding a funeral procession for Harnam Kaur, one of the first South Asian women in Canada, who lost her life in 1914 during her battle against Canada’s racist immigration policies of the time. We have seen it through numerous activist movements such as the Sikh and South Asian fight for labour rights in the 60s and 70s. Then there have been times of pure pain and anguish, like with the farmers’ protests. Vancouver was a major hub of the Ghadr movement, one of the factions fighting for Indian independence from the British crown in the early 1900’s. Many activists and leaders of the movement shared intelligence and coordinated activities with fellow groups in India and down the West Coast into California. What was their relationship with the government of Canada, an entity still wholly under the Crown at this time, while they fought to free their homeland from it?

A height of 28.3 metres (92.8 feet) with additional height for a rooftop amenity space and a floor space ratio (FSR) of 3.53 are proposed. 5. CD-1 Rezoning: 8655 Granville Street To rezone 8655 Granville Street from C-2 (Commercial) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District, to permit the development of an 11-storey, mixed-use building with at-grade commercial space, office space, and 55 strata-titled residential units. A height of 38.4 metres (126 feet) and a floor space ratio (FSR) of 4.10 are proposed.

ake Virtanen scored 18 goals last season. It’s important to start with that statistic because it seems stat unbelievable now. Virtanen’s unb were fifth on the 18 goals g team, ahead of Brock Boeser team and he was on pace for 21 goals and 42 points in a goa full 82-game season, which second-line is high-end h production. pro Just looking at those point totals, tho it’s understandable u why the Canucks would want to re-sign Virtanen to wan two-year deal worth $2.55 a tw million per year. If Virtanen could build off his 2019-20 season, perhaps he could finally pay off the potential that got him drafted sixth overall in 2014 with Jim Benning’s first draft pick as general manager of the Canucks. Instead, Virtanen has just four goals through 35 games and, incredibly, no assists. Only one player in Canucks history has played at least 30 games in a season without a single assist — 35-year-old Tim Hunter in the 1995-96 season. Hunter, at least, was an enforcer playing with fourthliners, while Virtanen’s most common linemates this season have been top-six forwards Tanner Pearson, Bo Horvat, and J.T. Miller, along with stints on the team’s second power play unit. It would almost be impressive not to get a single assist while playing with those players if it weren’t so depressing. That’s not how this season was supposed to go for Virtanen. In the off-season, he spoke with selfawareness of his struggles with inconsistency, and a determination to improve. He looked to avoid questions about his conditioning by training with veteran Tyler Myers in Kamloops, away from the distractions of his home in the Fraser Valley. “I'd love to play top-six and have a bigger opportunity, more responsibilities," he said heading into the season. "I want to be able to prove that to the team and my teammates that I can play up there and be consistent every night.” With Tyler Toffoli gone in free agency, partly because of the cap space taken up by Virtanen’s new contract, there was a vacancy in the top-six. Even when Nils Höglander swooped in during training camp and nabbed that spot,

Virtanen still got his top-six opportunity when J.T. Miller had to self-isolate on the NHL’s COVID list. He started the season on the top line with Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser. It was a disaster. This season, the same issues keep cropping up: inconsistency, lack of physical engagement, and defensive miscues. If Virtanen was putting the puck in the net, those issues could be overlooked to a certain extent, but he’s not doing that either. It’s like a one-trick pony who’s forgotten his only trick. In truth, there were warning signs last season. He had a career-high shooting percentage that was likely to regress, and his defensive issues were readily apparent. On top of that, he disappeared in the playoffs, leading Benning to bluntly say he was “expecting more” of Virtanen. What can the Canucks do with Virtanen? Trade rumours raged earlier in the season, with one potential deal with the Anaheim Ducks reportedly falling through because of Virtanen’s hefty raise in actual salary in the second year of his contracts. In past negotiations, Benning has set a premium price for his first-ever pick but it seems unlikely anyone will pay much of anything for a fourgoal winger. Likewise, the Seattle Kraken are unlikely to take Virtanen off the Canucks’ hands in the upcoming expansion draft. At this point, the Canucks have two options: a salarycap-saving buyout in the offseason or holding onto hope that Virtanen somehow bounces back next season. For Sikh Heritage Month BC, The Nameless Collective will be hosting virtual walking tours on the streets of Metro Vancouver, including Kitsilano, New Westminster, and downtown Vancouver, as well as some intimate discussions going through archival pictures and sharing stories of Sikhs and South Asians in BC. This April, during Sikh Heritage Month, take the opportunity to learn about this oft-forgotten part of BC’s rich history. Vancouver appoints new city manager

aul Mochrie is Vancouver’s new city manager. In an acting role since Sadhu Johnston announced his retirement last fall, Mochrie has always been high on council’s shortlist of candidates for the job. Mayor Kennedy Stewart said as much in a news release dated Sept. 17, 2020 that announced the recruitment of a new city manager was underway. “City council has full confidence in Mr. Mochrie’s leadership and the experience he brings from his nearly five years as deputy city manager,” Stewart said at the time. C Ferries will be seeking input on a new fare program launched for trips between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island before rolling it out to other routes. The new Saver fare, available on the three Metro Vancouver-Vancouver Island routes, is billed by the corporation as encouraging economic recovery once travel restrictions are lifted – and to get out in front of an anticipated increase in demand. For now, the program only applies to people travelling for essential purposes and will be extended to all passengers once restrictions relax, and will be available year-round. The Saver fare is the cheapest fare, available on less busy sailings, and Prepaid fare will allow customers to book and pay in advance. Both fares must be purchased in advance. In a March 3 announcement, BC Ferries said the new options should “reduce sailing waits at popular times, make better use of all sailings and help make the ferry system more eﬃcient.” The Saver fare’s starting rate is $73.70, including a reservation, for a car and driver. It will drop to a minimum of $49 on oﬀpeak times for travel from April 6 onwards. Prepaid fares will be as low as 84.70 for a car

and driver on the three Metro VancouverVancouver Island routes. “Our routes between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island account for about 60 per cent of overall ferry traffic, so we are introducing our new fare choices on these routes first,” said BC Ferries president and CEO Mark Collins. “When the province lifts essential travel orders, these fare options will provide our customers more value, flexibility and certainty. They will also help spread traffic across the day, reducing sailing waits at popular times.” At a March 3 District of Sechelt council meeting, Coun. Century-old advertisement uncovered by construction

idden for decades, a window into Vancouver’s past was recently uncovered on East Hastings. “Specify 4X Bakery Products Canadian Bakeries Ltd.” the sign reads. Likely painted by hand in the late 1920s, it was sandwiched between a recently torndown commercial building at the corner of Hastings and Penticton. The building the sign is on, 2615 E Hastings St., is also slated for demolition to make way for a mixed-used, six-storey complex that was approved by Vancouver City Council at a public hearing in 2019. This isn’t the only 4X Bakery products sign that has been found in East Vancouver. According to Spacing Magazine, a publication that covers public space issues in major Canadian cities, another sign was found in 2011. The 75-year old ghost ad was uncovered during renovations of the old Victoria Drive Grocery. Also known as Shelly’s 4X Bakery, the company was the work of bakers William Curtis Shelly and his brother James, originally from Ontario. The brothers moved west in 1910 to expand their business and set up their bakery in Vancouver. W.C. Shelly went on to become a millionaire, a prominent businessman and an inﬂuential B.C. politician during the Great Depression. But what does the 4X mean? Woman receives hand-written apology from kids after her garden was raided

he didn't expect it to bloom into this. Sandra Dreger lives in Kelowna and loves spending time in her garden. This year, she planted 400 bulbs and was very happy when they started blooming. The problem started when three young girls went beyond admiring her garden but began picking them and selling them door to door.

"I like it when people stop and admire my garden and I don't even mind when they pick a few, that makes me happy — but when they walk away with armfuls." Dreger says she then watched as the girls, likely between the ages of 8-10, went door to door selling the ﬂowers, "that's deﬁnitely industrious."

Dreger says she didn't want to confront the girls in the street so she took to social media and posted a gentle note about the situation. "Their parents must have seen the post because I got a hand-written apology letter." The letter reads, "Dear Neighbours, we are sorry for taking your ﬂower. We didn't realize that it was your garden. Sorry again."

Dreger says the girls came back and handdelivered the letter, "I think they thought I was going to get mad at them but it worked out really well." "It was nice," says Dreger. By Rob Gibson

It's almost time to shoot the Stanley Park coyotes

hile the Vancouver Park Board has been distracted by the issues surrounding the Strathcona Park homeless encampment, as well as the sale of the Vancouver Aquarium, coyotes have managed to oﬃcially take over Stanley Park.It's theirs now.

Ask the man who was nearly dragged oﬀ the seawall by two coyotes recently after unintentionally running into one on his motorized scooter. Ask the woman who was bitten by one two weeks ago while casually walking the same seawall. Or the man who was bitten while jogging it three weeks earlier. Heck, ask the Park Board itself, which closed down trails in deference to the aggressive coyotes who continue nipping at and biting people. The board's response to the attacks up until this point has been measured. They've temporarily closed some areas of the park, worked with the BC Conservation Oﬃcer Service as they put down a couple of the animals, and started

an awareness campaign educating people about how to deal with—and prevent— coyotes being aggressive. Yet the animals continue to attack humans, and with increasing frequency. The BCCOS tells Vancouver Is Awesome that there have been 17 attacks by coyotes on humans in the park since December of 2020, and an even larger number of "concerning encounters" with them in that time. It's not the fault of the animals; in more remote settings, the species is leery of getting near us and generally not inclined to get bitey. Their urban counterparts have become aggressive partly due to their carb-rich diet which is being given to them by humans, who the BCCOS says may be hand-feeding them, leading to them being less fearful of people. The Fur-Bearers organization, which works to "promote solutions for wildlife coexistence in communities", has successfully advocated for more public awareness efforts so that the animals won't be further habituated and that we might go back to co-existing with them peacefully. However, at this rate, it seems imminent that a child will be injured or killed, like the toddler that was attacked in Burnaby a couple of years back. So what to do about these animals which first appeared in Stanley Park in 1988? According to a 2001 City of Vancouver staff report which resulted in the

formation of the Co-Existing with Coyotes program, capturing and relocating them is nearly impossible, as theyy are waryy to enter trap ps and it's contrary to provincial wildlife policy to tranquilize them with darts, as it would present a public safety hazard. The report concludes that "the most eﬀective but controversial method for removal of [problem] coyotes is to shoot them." That option sucks, and according to the BCCOS a cull is not currently on the table. Their job is to protect animals, not shoot them. They tell us that it's not currently in the public interest to remove all coyotes from the park, and that they play an important role in the ecosystem there. We reached out to a few Park Board Commissioners; none were willing to speak to the issue for this column. The board can't trigger a cull (that decision would involve B.C.'s Chief Veterinarian and the Ministry of Forests and Lands), but sooner or later the public may demand that they advocate for a harsh solution. If the eﬀorts to educate the public don't result in changes in the behaviour of these animals and somebody gets seriously hurt, it may be time to shoot the coyotes. And nobody wants that.

How a Vancouver pro youth soccer player became a clothing designer

he pandemic has taken a toll on restaurants in Vancouver, but a longstanding haven for Aussie ex-pats in the heart of downtown's financial district has been teetering on the brink of closure. Now the owners of Moose's Down Under are crediting a crowdfunding campaign launched by a loyal customer for saving them from having to close down. Launched in December 2020, a GoFundMe campaign created by Danielle Carolan has recently surpassed its $20,000 goal. "I am hoping we can work together to help them through this unprecedented period, as they have helped us all in the last 25 years," writes Carolan on the GoFundMe campaign page. Carolan calls Moose's Down Under her "home away from home," which she has visited countless times in her nearly two decades working downtown. Known for its "Aussie hospitality" and fare like Aussie meat pies, kangaroo burgers, and Australia's beloved "parmies" (aka Chicken Parmesan), the popular watering hole and hangout also does a "1K Parmie Challenge," in which you can attempt to down a one-kilo chicken parmie and a side of fries in under 45 minutes. But Carolan also points out that Moose's success is also in large part due to its owners, Chris Gock and Corina Aquino, and the staff. "The minute you open the door, you are greeted with such a warm welcome, you know that the staff has one thing in mind:

to make you feel welcome and bring you delicious food," explains Carolan. But opening the door to go into Moose's which isn't just a spot for "down under" eats, it's literally located "down under" in a lower level space on Pender at Hornby - isn't on the menu these days, as British Columbia just extended its current ban on indoor dining, aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19. When the ban first went into effect at the end of March, Aquino says it was potentially the last straw. "For Moose’s...for Chris and me, this has brought us to the edge," Aquino shared on Moose's Facebook page on April 13. Aquino had not yet shared Carolan's GoFundMe, explaining she was "uncomfortable with letting everyone know how dire our situation has become." The restaurateur added while they had been doing all they could to stay open, offering take-out, selling gift cards, and working on new items like frozen meat pies for customers to enjoy at home, it was possible their efforts "would not be enough." Customers rallied, taking the donation campaign over its goal. On April 18, Aquino once again took to Facebook to express relief and gratitude for the tremendous support: "We are going to survive this closure due to the support we have received from all of you. As the saying goes what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." Aquino added that new menu items for takeout and re-heating at home were in the works, and some forward-thinking wishes: "Keep safe and behave so we can get back to seeing your smiling faces here."

While his dreams of professional soccer may be fading, the young entrepreneur continues to grow his brand and support his neighbourhood.

n early 2020, Vancouver's Nicolas Budisa was on top of the world. The 20-year-old was playing youth soccer in Portugal after being a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps residency program and Canada Soccer. Everything changed once COVID-19 hit. How Vancouver's oldest building is still surviving

ancouver's oldest building sits on Alma Street, near picturesque Jericho Beach. The Old Hastings Mill Store Museum is over 150 years old.

The iconic store stood in Gastown for more than 60 years, before it was saved when Hastings Sawmill was slated for demolition. In 1930 the building was shipped by barge to its current location in Point Grey. It was re-opened as a museum in 1932 by a historical society composed of B.C.-born women. A volunteer group known as Friends of Old Hastings Mill Store Museum now leases the land from the city and maintains the site's vast collection of artifacts. The museum’s unique heritage items include one of Vancouver’s ﬁrst city council tables, lifeguard Joe Fortes’ certiﬁcate from the city, and an original full-size hansom cab. Today, the building is run completely by volunteers while depending on donations and grants. Despite a big fundraising push last year, the museum still desperately needs public funds

for further upgrades in order to remain open. The museum's Lisa Anne Smith says there is always ongoing work. "There's rot happening around the exterior features and the roof eventually will need replacing. The ﬁre doors need replacing, badly." Smith details the history of Hastings Mill in a forthcoming book, due out in several months, and all proceeds will be donated back to preserving the store. "I think it's important because it puts us in touch with our past and the more you appreciate your past, the more you can value your present," says Smith. The museum is currently open on weekends from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with social distancing protocols in place. By Thor Diakow
