The NHL’s aggressive schedule for the post-COVID Canucks is reckless at best

refuel their bodies between games, not to mention rest mentally. Several players talked about the mental grind of the beginning of the season.

Sleep is also a key element in recovery for athletes, which makes the team’s travel schedule a concern. They will twice have to travel from one city to another between games on back-to-back nights, while one stretch of their upcoming schedule will see them change time zones five times in the space of 13 days.

It’s a relentless, unforgiving grind of a schedule for a team in perfect health, like the Canucks were for the most part to start the season. For a team coming off a COVID-19 outbreak? It shows a blatant disregard for the health and safety of the players.

Certainly, some of the Canucks were asymptomatic while in self-isolation and may return to the ice none the worse for wear. Others, however, experienced everything from fatigue, headaches, and nausea, to vomiting and other severe symptoms. It is known that the virus can cause damage to the lungs, heart, and brain, which can cause everything from heart failure to breathing problems, to strokes. Professional athletes in other sports have reported struggling with their conditioning as much as six months after having COVID-19.

This isn’t meant to be alarmist, merely concerned. NHL players push themselves to their limits game after game.

What happens when that limit is lower than they’re expecting

o start the 2020-21 season, the Canucks played 18 games in 31 days. It was a brutal slog of a schedule with four sets of back-to-back games and three times where they played four games in one week.

By the end of that opening month of the season, the players werre exhausted. They had a six-game losing streak to end off the stretch where they were out-scored 29-to-11. While thee Canucks were already looking like a team that was going to take a step back, that brutal run of games to start off the seaason certainly didn’t help.

No ow, coming off the worst COVID-19 outbreak the NHL hass seen, the Canucks are going to be asked to take on an eveen more daunting schedule.

Insstead of 18 games in 31 days, it will be 19 games in 31 days.

Insstead of four sets of back-to-backs, it will be six. Instead of playying four games in one week three times, they’ll do it five tim mes.

Wh hen the Canucks resume their schedule on Friday, April 16 — or “if” considering they had a new COVID-19 case thiss past weekend — the team won’t have a two-day break bett ween games for the rest of the season. For a team that hassn’t played in three weeks, hasn’t been able to practice, hassn’t been able to train, and has 20+ players who tested possitive for COVID-19, it seems like an incredibly reckless sch hedule that is asking for players to get injured.

Neever mind the results of the games — the Canucks are far eno ough back in the playoff race that the results don’t matter.

Forr the Canucks, these last 19 games should be all about stayying healthy heading into the offseason.

Stu udies have repeatedly shown that a lack of rest and reccovery time is a significant reason why high-level athletes gett injured. Players need time for muscles to recover and to

it to be? When athletes push their bodies past where their bodies are ready to go, that’s when you get soft-tissue injuries — from mild sprains and strains to muscle and ligament tears.

It all seems so unnecessary and even absurd. The Canucks are likely to still be playing meaningless regular season games while the other three NHL divisions have already begun the playoffs.

At this point, you have to wonder who’s looking out for the health and safety of the players.

ictory Square wasn’t always a public square with the Cenotaph standing at attention, as captured in this hand-tinted lantern slide from the second half of the 1920s.

The site was initially developed in 1889 as the Provincial Court House, and remained as such until 1911, when the Provincial Court was relocated to a newly completed Court House building on Georgia Street.

The original Court House was demolished the following year, with the Provincial Government planning to sell the site. There was strong opposition to this plan from Vancouver residents who wished to see the area turned into a public park. For the next several years the site, as Major Matthews, the first City Archivist describes it, “lay as a desolate untidy waste in the centre of a busy city.”

World War a recruitment tent was erected on the north end of the square where the Cenotaph was eventually built. There was also a several-month tenure in 1917 of an enormous wooden structure known as the Evangelistic Tabernacle where large religious revival meetings were held.

The Provincial Government turned over the site to the City at the end of the war to be used as a soldiers’

memorial. In late 1919, the City officially named the site “Victory Square”. Up until then, it had been known as Court House Square. The Cenotaph was built with funds by public subscription and unveiled on April 27, 1924.

Landscaping of the rest of the square took place the following year.

New Venetian-inspired wine bar to launch in revamped downtown cafe space

W

e might not be taking off on dreamy holiday treks in Northern Italy, but the newly-revamped restaurant located in the heart of Vancouver's Coal Harbour area could take us there instead.

Kitchen Table Restaurants has revealed the concept for what was the Giovane cafe on the ground floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The Vancouver restaurant group (Ask For Luigi, Pourhouse, DiBeppe) took over the location last summer and operated it for some time as an extension of its 'Pastificio di Luigi' operations, offering fresh and packaged pasta and other light bites and coffee.

Inspired by "the bustling hidden gems found on the quaint backstreets of Venice" what will now be known as Giovane Bacaro will include a wine bar, dining room, and lounge.

A core feature will be the bar, which is set to showcase the flavours, ingredients, and vibes crucial to the fine art of Italian aperitivo - the practice of enjoying a palate-opening snack before dinnertime. To that end, the Giovane Bacaro bar will feature several chilled Italian vermouths via an

Enomatic system for guests to order up and drink neat, on the rocks, with a splash of soda or as a Prosecco spritz.

But, si, there will be coffee: The cafe space will offer espresso-based drinks and caffé speciali from a custommade Victoria Arduino ‘Eagle One’ espresso machine.

Practice your Italiano to order bevs like mandorlatte, marocchino, bicerin and affogato.

Giovane Bacaro's menu will feature small bites and larger plates of cicchetti (snacks or side dishes), Italian panini and tramezzini (triangular sandwiches on soft white bread), along with freshlymade bread, salads, and pasta dishes.

For dessert, we're told we can expect some classic and modern dolci. Will they bring back old Giovane's legendary sugar buns? Probably not, but for the record they're still sorely missed.

Both Hardwick and Kirby-Yung have long been rumoured to be interested in a run for mayor in 2022.

The party has typically held a nomination meeting for a mayoral candidate, as it did in 2018 but took the appointment route in the 2014 race with Kirk LaPointe and in 2011 with Suzanne Anton.

“The people of Vancouver are looking for transparent, strong leadership they can trust,” the statement continued.

“The actions of the board executive fall short of this standard. We also note this action was not accompanied by any commitment to hold

an open AGM as we have and continue to call for, and that will enable NPA members to gather and participate in their party.”

The statement did not include NPA Coun. Melissa De Genova, who retweeted a media story announcing that Coupar was the NPA’s candidate.

De Genova said in an email Wednesday that "I don’t see the board’s actions as being as limiting as my colleagues do. As a caucus, our focus has been to get a new board elected at an open and transparent AGM. This is important because it is the path to ensure the NPA board reflects the values and ideals of members and city residents.

That is still my focus and it is something that John now will have to help deliver on."

The NPA board is expected to hold an annual general meeting this year and — depending on the turnout and interest — could lead to a change in the make-up of the board.

In theory, that could lead a new board to rescind the decision to appoint Coupar and launch a nomination battle for a mayoral candidate.

Coupar participated in a nomination battle in 2018 but lost to Ken Sim, who went on to lead the party in the mayoral race, losing to Kennedy Stewart by 958 votes.

Stewart and Sim are both running again, although Sim has yet to reveal with which party but has said he has been part of a “movement” that has raised more than $420,000.

Coupar told Glacier Media that he was confident he could bring the party’s caucus

together and get their support in his run for mayor.

“I’ve been the caucus chair and I’ve worked with them all, and I’ve worked extremely well with councillor KirbyYung when we were on the park board together for four years, and I hope that they see the value in my experience,” Coupar said. “They know my style and they know that I’m a collaborative person, and I hope that we can all come together.”

Added Coupar: “Politics is often messy, but I think we can find a way forward.”

hree NPA city councillors say they were “taken aback” by the decision of their party’s board to appoint a mayoral candidate for the next civic election in October 2022.

Lisa Dominato, Colleen Hardwick and Sarah KirbyYung released a statement last week after the party issued a news release announcing that longtime park board commissioner John Coupar was selected as the party’s candidate.

“Many have asked when we found out, and the answer is immediately ahead of the media announcement,” the councillors’ statement said.

“We are extremely disappointed there was no open, transparent and democratic mayoral call for candidates, or application or nomination process, thus eliminating any opportunity for elected women in the NPA caucus to participate, or for any others to submit expressions of interest.”

hen a prospective pup owner has their heart set on a particular breed, it can seem as though the options of where to find that dream dog are limited to breeders or bust.

One of Vancouver's newest dog rescue societies is working to challenge that perception—specifically when it comes to one of the most adorable small breeds out there.

Co-founders Amina Ayub and Hillary Connelly launched Hello Doxie Rescue on Valentine’s Day this year, after bonding over their similar career paths and mutual love for dachshunds.

The society is now working with an independent rescuer based in Taiwan to save dogs from troublesome living situations in that region and match them with doxie-approved homes in B.C. "One of my [three] dogs and [Connelly's] dog are both rescue dogs from Taiwan, from the rescuer that Hello Doxie is currently partnered with," Ayub explained.

While adopting their own pets, the pair learned more about the need for help in Taiwan and decided to put their passion for doxies into practice. "There are a lot of abandoned stray dogs on the streets; there are a ton of puppy mills in Asia that are just full to the brim with dogs in cages upon cages, and there's also a lot of owner-surrendered dogs in Asia—people who buy dogs and then later decide that they don't want them anymore," said Ayub.

So far, the non-profit Hello Doxie has helped match three rescued dogs with forever homes in B.C., and is looking at expanding their operation with other partnerships in Korea and Japan.

While they have identified several more dogs currently being cared for in Taiwan that are in need of a forever home, the COVID-19 pandemic is posing more than a few challenges.

The female-founded, volunteer-run not-for-profit operatees solely on donations, adoption fees, and the proceeds from its online merchandise and pet supply shop, she added.

oes Ryan Reynolds harbour a hidden desire to be an NHL general manager?

Taking the helm of an NHL team would be a significant pay cut for the movie star but the actor is a big fan of his hometown Vancouver Canucks and has previously — jokingly — begged to take the ice for the Canucks as a player.

Perhaps Reynolds would be better suited for a front office role with the Canucks. He’s already involved in sports in an ownership role after buying Welsh soccer team Wrexham AFC with fellow actor Rob McElhenney.

According to Reynolds himself, however, the Canucks would be “stupid” to hire him as GM. He said so on an Instagram post by Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.

The day after racking up a hat trick in a four-point night against the Ottawa Senators, Matthews shared photos from his performance, showing that he was using a special stick and skates during the game in support of the SickKids Foundation.

Reynolds has done a lot of work with the SickKids Foundation, including his annual ugly Christmas sweater campaign to help raise money. This last year, Matthews was part of Reynolds ugly Christmas sweater campaign, connecting the two stars.

Naturally, when Matthews posted on Instagram about his SickKids skates and stick, Reynolds had to comment with some support for his buddy.

“Absolute legend on and off the ice,” said Reynolds. “If the Canucks are ever stupid enough to let me become GM, I’ll do everything in my power to get you on the team.”

Pursuing a big name and one of the NHL’s best goalscorers for his first move as Canucks GM? That doesn’t sound so bad. But then Reynolds kept going.

“Even if I have to move the team to Toronto,” he continued.

he Robbins sisters, who together play the WhiteFaced Women from A Series of Unfortunate Events, took a break from hunting the Baudelaire orphans to get their COVID-19 vaccines right here in Vancouver.

“Look who stopped by to get their COVID-19 vaccines,” Vancouver Coastal Health tweeted Friday.

Invasive zebra mussels hurting pet store sales

I

f you're trying to buy fish from a Vancouver pet store right now, you might be out of luck. The culprit?

Tiny mollusks the size of your fingernail.

Invasive zebra mussels are to blame, as they can sometimes hitch a ride on decorative aquarium moss balls often sold by pet stores.

According to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, "Zebra mussels pose a major threat if released into a B.C. waterway. The tiny mussels can wreak havoc on aquatic ecosystems, salmon populations, hydro power stations, and other facilities

because they multiply rapidly and are extremely difficult to eradicate."

Conservation officers have contacted over 1,100 retail aquatic pet and plant stores and found the mussels in moss balls across the province, including Metro Vancouver, Terrace, Invermere, Kamloops, and Vancouver Island.

While some major pet store chains have temporarily suspended selling fish, Noah's Pet Ark on West Broadway has been able to deal with the issue while keeping fish sales open to the public.

"We have individual tanks;

they're not linked together.

Theoretically, if you connect all your tanks and have one filter it looks like it might be less work; but if there's a disease issue with fish, it's contained into one tank. That certainly has created a little isolation for the moss ball issue in our store," says owner Graham White.

The provincial government is asking the public to check home aquariums for the tiny mussels that may be attached to moss balls.

Nearly 3,000 moss balls have recently been seized or surrendered to conservation officers.

Pilot program allows Vancouver students to access COVID-19 tests at school

C Children's Hospital and the Vancouver School District are working together to give students easy, quick access to COVID-19 testing this spring.

Starting this month, schools in the Vancouver School District will be able to provide any students who develop symptoms of the virus while at school with a BC Children's Hospital mouth rinse and gargle sample collection kit to take home.

After collecting the sample at home—accomplished by swishing, gargling and spitting a small amount of saline into a funnel— families can then drop it off to the secure BC Children’s location that is listed in the kit, or to any LifeLabs location.

“We began to work with the school system to try to make testing children for COVID-19 more feasible for families,” said BC Children’s Medical Microbiologist Dr. David Goldfarb in a news release issued Friday.

“We found that school-aged children were generally quite good at collecting these samples on their own with some parental support and this facilitated a home-based collection approach.”

BC Children’s will initially be handing out a total of 1,200 kits to the district. Each elementary and secondary school is set to receive 12 kits, with more being sent as needed. The hospital said it is also looking at offering kits to other districts across the province.

The saline mouth rinse and gargle method, initially introduced in B.C. last September, serves as a more comfortable testing alternative for children than the typical nasopharyngeal swabs. Families who made use of the take-home tests during a four-month field test in ten Vancouver schools said collecting the sample in a familiar place was not as stressful as having to take their unwell child to a collection centre, according to

the release.

"The purpose of this pilot phase was to distribute the kits to the schools and families, have families complete the sample collection at home and see if the samples would arrive at the lab," BC Children's Hospital explained in the release. "They did and the field test was a success!"

Parents are still asked to monitor their children for symptoms of COVID-19 before students attend school each day. If students do have any symptoms, they should remain at home and access testing at a collection centre, if advised.

Children should not eat, drink (even water), chew gum, brush their teeth, smoke or vape for at least one hour before the mouth rinse and gargle test.

According to the BCCDC, they should also avoid practising the swish, gargle, and spit method two hours or sooner before the test.

Dance nce moms taking TikTok by storm

A

group of Vancouver moms are racking up the views on social media thanks to their groovy moves.

The Ho ouse Wives of Hip Hop (the name also ackknowledges their love of house music) have garnered over three million views on n TikTok since they started posting short daance videos last summer.

The gro oup is comprised of seven local women and was formed six years ago when the ladiees realized their kids were having a blast at dance class and they wanted in on the actio on.

After reeceiving some lessons from Boogalo oo Academy co-owner Jheric Hizon, the team honed their skills and were eventuaally winning medals and performing at the West Coast Women's Show and Victoriaa Women's Expo.

"We really try and respect the artists and the people who founded hip hop and the reasons for why they started doing these dances in the first place," explains member Kerrie Everitt.

COVID-19 has forced the troupe to get creative. Three members, who live near each other, have started dancing in alleys, carports, parks, and various other East Vancouver locations.

Not even a global pandemic can stop this ensemble from spreading joy; in fact, it's actually helped their popularity.

"If we could encourage somebody to dance in their living room or try to learn a TikTok and just enjoy themselves, try something new that they might find scary, that just makes us really happy as a group," says cofounder Alexa Uhrich.

The Public Service Announcement tour headlined by Rage Against the Machine (with Run the Jewels also on the bill) is now set for May 5, 2022 at the Pacific Coliseum. The tour reportedly sold out shortly after it was originally announced.

Originally the tour was due to play May 1, 2020, but

due to the pandemic it was postponed and rescheduled to June 2021.

An updated tour schedule was released this week.

"The Rage Against The Machine tour will now start in the spring of 2022. Your tickets will be honored for the postponed shows," the band states on its website.

Meanwhile, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters will be at Rogers Arena in 2022 as well; originally he was slated to

play there Sept. 14. The rock legend, who's 77 now, will be on his This Is Not A Drill tour. It's planned to be 'in the round' which puts Waters in the middle of the audience.

According to a Facebook post the show will feature many classic Pink Floyd tracks.

It's also hinted it may be the beginning of the end of touring for Waters. The Vancouver show will be Sept. 15, 2022; he'll be 79 at the show.

Family launches fundraiser for man who saved their son's life "Our doctors said without the transplant, he was unlikely to live past his fifth birthday," explains the family.

The procedure the donor went through to donate his bone marrow was painful and invasive, "they had to drill a hole through his back... he had months of recovery and physical therapy. He had to take several months off of work, unpaid."

Now, the family would like to help the donor cover some of his time off work, as well as medical expenses and physical therapy. They add that the gift he gave their son is "priceless."

"We have had an expensive few years due to being at our son's bedside, in and out of the hospital, so we are reaching out to the community," reads the GoFundMe. "With the transplant and with some luck, Liam will now live past his 5th birthday, and grow up to be as tall as his donor (6'5), who shares matching genes to Liam."
