Brock Boeser’s shot is back and it’s made him the Canucks’ MVP so far this season

A

fter the Canucks first game of the season, Brock Boeser dropped a quote that should have sent shivers down the spines of every goaltender in the all-Canadian North Division.

“I feel like my shot’s back where it was my first year,” he said, exp plaining that his shot had suffered for a couple of seasons in the wake of his back injury. He had good reason to be con nfident: he had just scored two goals, including one on a wiccked wrist shot while flying down the right wing. Over Ov v two months into the 2020-21 season, it’s become evident thaat Boeser was wrong. His shot isn’t back where it was in hiss rookie year. It’ss better. Bo oeser’s wrist shot does look like it’s right back to where it was in his rookie season when he won the accuracy com mpetition at the NHL’s All-Star weekend. He had a 17.2% sho ooting percentage with his wrist shot as a rookie, but that felll to 14.1% in his sophomore season and all the way down to 8.5% last season. Th his year, he’s scoring on 17.5% of his wrist shots, which maatches the eye test: the puck is exploding off his stick in thee same thrilling way it did when he was a rookie picking corrners on goaltenders. It’ss the other aspects of his shot that seem to have improved, parrticularly his slap shot. What was rarely a weapon for Bo oeser in previous years — he didn’t score a single slap shot goaal last season — suddenly looks incredibly dangerous. Mo oved out to the left flank on the power play with Elias Petttersson injured, Boeser has had more opportunities for onee-timers and scored on a rocket of a slap shot from a Quinn

Hughes pass on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens. In his rookie season, Boeser scored primarily with his wrist shot. 20 of his 29 goals — 69% — came via wrist shot, leaving just 9 goals total scored with a snap shot, slap shot, backhand, or tip. This season, Boeser has scored more goals with other types of shots than he has with his wrist shot, even if his wrist shot is still his primary weapon. Boeser has 7 wrist shot goals this season, but 9 with other types of shots. That means Boeser is less dependent on his wrist shot to score, which makes him a lot harder for opposing teams to stop. Boeser has talked in the past about teams defending him more tightly and giving him less room to shoot, but he’s adapting as well and finding other ways to score. That’s what’s made him such a dangerous scoring threat this season: he’s diversified his skillset. We’ve seen him bang in rebounds around the crease, tip in point shots, hammer one-timers, deke around defenders, and, of course, rip wrist shots off the post and in. To go with that scoring, Boeser has continued to take steps forward as a multi-dimensional, two-way player. “He’s got a strong understanding of different parts of the game that no one talks about,” said head coach Travis Green. “I can see that and he’s taking pride in that and that’s the evolution of a young player, not just becoming a good player in the league but becoming a player in the league that

understands what it takes to win. I think he he’ss really come along nicely in that area.” As a result, Boeser has arguably been the Canucks most valuable player so far this year, leading the team in both goals and points, while also one of just four players on the roster with a positive plus/minus. Overshadowed after his stupendous rookie year by the even more stupendous rookie years of Pettersson and Hughes, Boeser is showing that he is just as much a key part of the Canucks’ future. Sales of armour for small dogs spike following wildlife encounters

T

he inventors of a specialized, spiky harness for small dogs are seeing a spike in sales following a rash of cougar and coyote sightings and attacks in Metro Vancouver. North Shore Veterinary Clinic staff Alison Columbus and Janice Voth designed their protective harness for smaller pooches back in 2019. Columbus works as a technician and Voth as an assistant at the North Vancouver clinic.

The pair invented their PredatorBWear harness after becoming disheartened by the number of small dogs they noticed were coming in for treatment following attacks from larger threats such as coyotes, raccoons and even bigger dogs. Despite the harness’s punk rock aesthetic, the device was popular with dog owners when it launched a few years ago, said Voth.

Interactive mural with powerful message unveiled

Comedian brings the laughs to East Vancouver street corner

B

eing a comedian during COVID-19 is no laughing matter. As local arts venues - including comedy clubs - continue to bear the brunt of the pandemic, performers are finding new ways to safely entertain the public. Tanya Horne is a prime example. She set up her own comedy stand on her neighbours' front lawn, at Nanaimo Street and East 5th Avenue, in the early days of the pandemic last year. The process has been cathartic for Horne, who lost her job months ago and now brings the neighbourhood plenty of 'hilarapy' - a blend of hilarity and therapy. She says, "I've suffered from depression and anxiety for about 20 years. So I was like, how do I help others while helping myself with my own mental health?" By Thor Diakow

S

ome new art in the heart of downtown Vancouver carries a powerful message. The YWCA Metro Vancouver has unveiled a mural that reminds passersby about intimate partner violence in Canada. It was created by Ola Volo, a Canadian mural artist and illustrator from Kazakhstan. The piece, located at The Hyatt Regency next to Burrard SkyTrain station, is also interactive hidden within the artwork are five phone-activated statistics that give anyone who takes a photo of the mural the chance to learn more and donate. The YWCA hopes the mural will raise awareness and encourage donations to help build new housing to serve women who have experienced violence. Recent statistics reveal over 30,000 women and children in B.C. are impacted by domestic violence each year. In addition, the pandemic has contributed to a 20-30% rise in gender-based violence and abuse across the country. By Thor Diakow

The 8 most drop-dead stupid comments from our YouTube channel this week

I

f you're subscribed to our YouTube channel you've hopefully been taking in a lot more informative content lately thanks mostly to our new Video Reporter, Thor Diakow. However, you may have noticed that there are a lot of really, really, ridiculously dumb comments that pile up under certain videos that we produce and share on the platform. Anything that has to do with COVID-19 acts as a magnet for people peddling conspiracy theories, and those generally inclined to believe that the pandemic is some sort of gigantic hoax designed by aliens and/or every single government on earth. To get to a point where you don't believe that the pandemic is happening is, in a word, insane. Yes, we are all tired of the restrictions being put on us. We all wish it wasn't this way. The good news is that most of us aren't dumb enough to go to a place of conspiracy to try to explain it all away so that we can roam freely, mask-less and perpetuate the pandemic. Us rational folks are the majority, in this together as a socially-distanced pack, but there are a few stray, rabid dogs roaming the alleyways behind our homes. I went through a great deal of comments in order to round up some of those strays, and below I present to you the eight most drop-dead stupid mutts I've seen this so far week. They're all in response to COVID-related reporting we've published. Northern Hillbilly (definitely their real name) belches "people watch this video Covid 19 Vaccines are WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION & Could Wipe Out the Human Race" then includes "(Dr Vernon Coleman)" in brackets, apparently urging people to go check out some unverified and random video where a person explains a conspiracy. Wooly Bully notes that we are "Mockingbird media and it's propaganda," with what is likely a small punctuation mistake there. Pretty stupid in all regards. User Jon Gee proclaims that it has been "1 year of S.C.A.M.demic." I'm not sure exactly what the acronym is there, but it could be Stupidest Comment All March. Zuzka Mudron chimed in with an all-too-common "Beee Beeee Beeeee" with a number of sheep emojis. In the world of COVID-deniers, sheep are people who believe science, and believe there is a pandemic happening. In the real world, those are considered "normal, rational people." Our pal Wilfred Witzke has a bit of trouble putting proper sentences together, but he popped his head out of his cave to grunt "anybody ask whats in the vaccine before they take it might be bad drugs oh yea no one is liable if you get bad reactions i wonder why that is these are questions people should be asking and there not." Brilliant stuff. Mister Jack Schitt thinks we are putting out "adds" (ads) for vaccines, and writes "Its funny that nobody in your vaccine adds say thay won't take the poison syringe. All lies" The righteous Scanius invokes the bible and Tupac, telling folks that "GOD will deal with each and every single one of you perpetuating this lie." Lastly, Carol B brings a classic, "It is a "shot" not a vaccine. Do your own research." "Do your own research" is code for "I am a complete moron and I believe that watching 12 hours of YouTube videos created by non-experts makes me an expert."

Again, my apologies if you've been on our YouTube channel and you've dug into these types of comments underneath our stories which are meant to keep you up to date on the COVID-19 situation, and other stuff happening in your city. They are everywhere these days, and sadly we aren't immune to them. If only there were a vaccine for stupid. Sadly, you can’t fix it. By Bob Kronbauer

ooking for your next favourite restaurant? Listings and consumer review site Yelp has compiled its list of "Canada's 100 Top Places to Eat in 2021" and the rankings feature an impressive 19 spots in Metro Vancouver. Among the dozen spots located within Vancouver is Manoush'eh, which took the number two spot on the nationwide list. The Davie Street spot specializes in what's called "Lebanese pizza," the "cherished national pie" of Syria. Elsewhere on the list from Vancouver are local faves like L'atelier Patisserie for baked goods, AnnaLena for a modern high-end meal, and one of the city's oldest and most unusual restaurants, the Northern Cafe and Grill, which is located above the hardware shop on the property of Northern Building. They've said it's been around since the 1960s, but other reports pin it back to the 1940s, and the spot is known for its irreverent attitude and menu of Chinese-Canadian diner fare. Around the region, places like Richmond's Lamajoun - a destination for Armenian fare - as well as North Vancouver's Workshop Vegetarian Cafe made the "Top 100" from Yelpers, as did New Westminster's hot spot for Lebanese eats, Wild Thyme. Further afield, Yelpers scored places like The Rimrock and Peaked Pies in Whistler high on their lists, along with Corner Nook in Chilliwack and Saha Eatery up in Squamish.

spots on this year's Top 100 Places to Eat list:

• Manoush'eh - Vancouver • Incognito Coffee - Vancouver • Number e food - Vancouver • Tom Sushi - Vancouver • Banh Mi Bar Restaurant - New Westminster • Lamajoun - Richmond • Smithe Salad - Vancouver • L'atelier Patisserie - Vancouver • Pawans Indian Kitchen - North Vancouver • The Northern Cafe and Grill - Vancouver • Workshop Vegetarian Cafe - North Van • Hot & Toasty Cafe - Langley • Anar Persian Cuisine - Richmond • AnnaLena - Vancouver • Absinthe Bistro - Vancouver • The Pokéman - Vancouver • Tavola - Vancouver • Wild Thyme - New Westminster • Sushi Jin - Vancouver Yelp explains its methodology as follows: "To determine Yelp’s Top Places to Eat in Canada in 2021, Yelp reached out to the user community first, requesting individuals to submit restaurants that they can't wait to return to in 2021 in Canada. London Drugs preparing for COVID-19 vaccine rollout

including teachers, childcare workers, grocery store staff, postal workers and first responders, have been identified as members of priority groups – meaning they will be eligible to get their vaccine next month. Health officials also announced that, as B.C.’s vaccine supply increases, pharmacies will be added to the list of locations that can administer the jab. The BC Pharmacy Association says in a statement that the next steps will be to work with its members, the Ministry of Health and health authorities to determine logistics, vaccines and their supply. As the vaccine becomes available to the general public, London Drugs says it will be launching an online appointment booking system.

GETTY

“This is one of the largest widespread public immunization efforts ever undertaken. Since pharmacists are the most accessible health care providers and our patients are already familiar with getting their annual flu shot at our pharmacies, we know that we have an important role to play in the distribution of vaccine supply,” says Chiew.

harmacy chain London Drugs says it’s preparing to help vaccinate thousands of British Columbians against COVID-19 as the province moves ahead with its rollout plan.

“We are ready to assist in British Columbia however we can to immunize people quickly, safely and according to the Government’s phased

distribution approach,” says Chris Chiew, general manager of pharmacy at London Drugs, in a statement. “For now that means sending our pharmacists out into the community to reach the most vulnerable including care homes and mass worksites.” The province announced last Thursday that more than 300,000 front-line workers,

According to London Drugs, the rollout does present “some unique supply chain demands,” as some of the approved vaccines need to be stored between -80 to -70 degrees Celsius, the company says. It adds that it has purchased several “specialized freezers and sourced ultralow temperature containers” so the vaccines can be safely transported from the company’s distribution centre to its pharmacies. W

hen Vancouver crime rate statistics were released late last year, many were surprised to see several categories flat or down. But when asked, your average Vancouverite will likely tell you they feel less safe than ever. Why does this schism exist? As a downtown Vancouver resident for most of my adult life, someone who loves good data, and the son of a (retired) VPD Homicide Detective, I've given a lot of thought to why the data does match people's feelings. I'm also one of those people that finds downtown far less safe than anytime I've lived here in the past three decades. So why does it "feel" less safe even if recent crime stats are reported to show the opposite? The answer to this has made itself known to me countless times over the last year or two. My fear is reinforced every time I see someone (or me) have a scary

interaction with someone else on the street. Multiple times on any given walk with my kids I pass people who are out of their mind, shouting graphically violent threats, and swearing. They're lost control of their brain or body in a way that would certainly be a threat to us, if we remained in their path. Add to that stepping over open drug use right in front of our corner store or actively avoiding piles of human feces in front of the door of our building, and there's no reason to think a police report about someone threatening us on the street would be acted upon. I recall having to threaten to smash a wine bottle over the head of someone who ran up behind me in Crosstown, screaming and apparently prepared to jump me for the alcohol I'd just bought. He never made contact but we both shouted at each other in a tense standoff. No police report. My apartment's resident manager

recently told me he's never seen so many people try to break into our building. He watches the security cameras and every day sees people trying all the locks and doors, waiting to scamper in the underground gate, and so on. These attempts don't warrant police reports. Another time, walking in Olympic Village, I saw a dishevelled man lurch toward a young Asian woman walking alone, swinging a bike's U-lock above his head and screaming at her. She dodged him and bolted away, he didn't pursue. I'm guessing she didn't file a police report either. Add to this the COVID-era twist of far fewer people being out downtown (and likely more people suffering from mental health issues) and the streets suddenly feel more dangerous and there's no one around to help you. Never mind the fact that many of us already feel as though the City has abandoned even basic maintenance

CHUNG CHOW

Opinion: Vancouver is less safe than ever, despite stats that suggest otherwise

like crosswalk paint. We've acclimated ourselves to feeling we’re on our own and under siege just walking through the city. But all these incidents aren't worthy of police reports, are they? I mean, who has the time? I'd be filing at least a police report every week, maybe more, if that's all it took. And you could argue, "None of these incidents resulted in you being hurt, so things aren't actually worse!" But that's ignoring how it feels to defend against this every day.

Measuring safety is a tricky business. But using 'filed police reports' as our only metric doesn't capture the very real, justified reasons why many Vancouver residents feel less safe than ever. Adrian Crook is a father of five and a long-time advocate for temporary modular housing for the homeless. He's a vocal supporter of safe injection sites and has volunteered in the DTES providing clothing and food. He believes an inclusive Vancouver can care for all its residents, in the unique way each requires.

f you've littered in a local lake lately, there's a good chance these folks have cleaned it up. Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans is a Vancouver-based volunteer organization, comprised of scuba (and free) divers, who comb the murky depths of our bodies of water in search of trash.

Turns out, there's a lot of it. Diver Henry Wang estimates

his team has pulled out roughly 45,000 beer cans since they started cleaning up in 2013. The group admits items such as cell phones sometimes end up in the water accidentally, but the amount of intentionally dropped refuse is rather appalling. Summertime is particularly troublesome for the team, as swarms of sun-revellers

flock to enjoy the picturesque lakeside settings but somehow think the water is one large liquid receptacle. The dedicated eco-warriors will continue to work hard and make a positive impact on the environment, but their message remains the same: pack out what you pack in.

April 17, 1921 − February 17, 2021 We are so very sad to announce the passing of our dear Dad, Allan (Buster) Ellsworth Graham at VGH, following a fall and hip fracture at home. We were so very grateful that Dad was able to live at home until the end. He was exactly two months shy of his 100th birthday. It seems he wanted to celebrate that milestone with Mom/his beloved wife, Kathleen, who predeceased him on September 9, 2017. We will remember him as a kind, generous, calm, patient, gentle, humble and very smart man. He loved to read, enjoyed playing crib and was a great crossword man. After retirement, he took up the hobby of winemaking and made some mighty fine wines. Growing up as the son of a CPR Engineer he spent his early years in North Bend, BC. He always loved the place and wanted to go back often. He served in the Army in WW2, stationed in Halifax and Little Mountain in Vancouver. He worked on the sea for most of his life in various posts, culminating in his position as Chief Engineer on the BC Ferries. He often joked that even though he worked on the water most of his adult life he couldn’t swim. He is survived by his children, Joan, Ken (Sandra), Linda (Doug), and Ron (Linda); and granddaughters, Alison and Kayla. As per his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be placed with Mom at Mountainview Cemetery in Vancouver. A celebration of life will be held at a later time when it is safe. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Salvation Army or any other charity of your choice. Thank you to the kind and compassionate nurses and doctors at VGH, and to his family physician, Dr. Paul Beveridge.

The best of Vancouver

A vote of confidence in a tumultuous year As modern consumers, we all vote with our wallets. We choose the places that deserve our support because they best fulfill our needs, and often times align with our values. Stars of Vancouver gives us another way to let our favourite businesses shine. Over the past few weeks we've encouraged readers to vote in a number of different categories, to help others sort through the myriad of choices they have to make every day. Thank you to everyone who voted this year, and congratulations to the businesses listed on the following pages. Many others have not made it through the phases of the COVID-19 pandemic we've been through, and the ones that are left can use all the support they can get. The Rio Theatre Sports Bar?

I

t comes as no surprise that The Score and the Shark Club placed first and second in this year's Sports Bar category. The two popular spots are long-time favourites weathering the pandemic just fine, while other similar establishments (such as movie theatres) have been forced to close their doors for the time being. Third place in the Sports Bar category going to the Rio Theatre - which has operated as an arts venue for a great long while - is a result that will go down in the history books. In November of 2020, theatre venues in B.C. were mandated to stop showing

film under a provincial health order. In response, the Rio rebranded into a "sports bar" in January of 2021, showing all varieties of sports on the big screen, from UFC bouts to NHL hockey matches.

Trusted Knowledge. Inspiring Results.

The theatre was "saved" from real estate developers in 2018, partly thanks to a conditional $375,000 arts grant the City of Vancouver gave them. The main condition? That tthey hey operate as an arts venuee in perpetuity ty, y and "If there is a change of use of the ty, y in whole or in part, property within 10 years of receiving the grant, staff will negotiate for a full repayment of the grant with interest." What the City tyy may do about

Mortgage Broker / Advisor Thank you for voting me as one of your favourites! calling back the grant remains to be seen, but rest assured the shrewd and media-savv vvy v y minds at the Rio won't be going anyw ywhere w without a public-facing fight.

Thank you so much to all our readers who voted in Stars and congrats to Amber O who won the Staycation package at the Westin Bayshore.

Let's get our hands dirty

H

ere in Vancouver we don't need to wait for April for showers to bring spring flowers; gardening really gets revving in March and we have plenty of stores to help us stay equipped. With two locations (one on Broadway and the other in Surrey) Hunters Garden Centre is a crowd favourite, partly because of selection but also because of how helpful their staff are. The East Van equivalent to Hunters is Figaro's on Victoria Drive, but it's their services that

really set them apart. They offer garden coaching and design along with sales of plants as you'd expect. To some, the area around 49th Ave and Southwest Marine Drive feels like a thousand miles away from downtown. For others it's right around the corner from home and their favourite garden centre, Southlands Nursery. Serving the westside since 1991, it's the go-to in the "equestrian pocket" of this upscale area of the city.

Serving Vancouver since 1990, there are now nine locations in the Lower Mainland. Many Choices locations serve as anchors in their neighbourhoods, offering organic vegetables, other healthy fare, and health and

Green Organic has a single location that serves people living near West Broadway and Maple, while Spud.ca is a massive delivery service with broad reach from the city's core all the way out to the Fraser Valley.

t's hard to argue that one of the best featu tures of our city t is the number of public gardens and other green spaces, but a consensus on which are the best ones is always tough to decide. Is it the pocket park on your block, that great field adjacent to the local community ty centre, or the huge parks that can hold thousands of people, socially distanced? Most of you voted huge, with VanDusen taking the cake. While the Festival of Lights was canceled, that didn't stop you from enjoying the standard (wonderful!) fare on offer here. Queen Elizabeth Park's pitch n' putt golf and disc golf courses may have helped secure its status as your second favourite huge park in the city t . That and the fact that you could walk it for hours and not come within six feet of another person. Your third pick is Stanley Park, which many travel brochures (remember travel?) refer to as the crown jewel of Vancouver. And they're not wrong.
