What is the future of the Canucks’ defence?

I

n the final three minutes of Saturday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, Alex Edler never left the ice.

He finished the game with 25:12 in ice time, leading all Vancouver Canucks skaters.

Th he vast majority of that time — 22 minutes and 21 seconds — was spent directly matched up against Connor McDavid, wh hether at even-strength or on the penalty kill. He and hiss partner Nate Schmidt were hard-matched against the MccDavid line, though Schmidt didn’t play on the penalty kill.

It says something about Edler that, at the age of 34, he’s still thee Canucks’ go-to defenceman for that shutdown role. It also sayys something about the Canucks.

Otther than Quinn Hughes, the only defenceman under the agee of 30 currently in the Canucks lineup is Schmidt, and he turrns 30 in July. The Canucks defence corps isn’t young and theere’s currently no heir apparent to Edler capable of playing a shu utdown role. The future of the Canucks defence is looking inccredibly shaky at the moment.

Th he Canucks have had some younger defencemen in the lineeup this season, such as 22-year-old Olli Juolevi and 24--year-old Jalen Chatfield, but both were pretty significantly sheeltered. There’s still hope that Juolevi can turn into a seccond-pairing defenceman, but his issues with mobility will con ntinue to hold him back from being the truly impactful deffenceman that Canucks GM Jim Benning envisioned when piccking him 5th overall in the 2016 draft.

Elssewhere in the prospect pool, Jack Rathbone is more in the Hu ughes mold, a dynamic offensive defenceman, but not the tyype to play a shutdown role. Jett Woo has a physical edge, typ butt it’s still a question of whether he’ll make the NHL, let alo one be a top-four defenceman. Other defencemen in the pro ospect pool, like Guillaume Brisebois, Brogan Rafferty,

and Ashton Sautner, are even longer shots to make the NHL and are ageing out of being considered prospects.

That’s a problem when you’re talking about a defence giving up the second-most shots on goal in the NHL. The Canucks currently have just two NHL defencemen signed for next season — Schmidt and Tyler Myers — as well as Rathbone and Woo still on entry-level contracts. Hughes and Juolevi will, of course, re-sign as restricted free agents, but that still leaves some significant holes to fill.

Decisions will need to be made on pending unrestricted free agents Edler, Jordie Benn, and Travis Hamonic, which is why this matters now.

If the Canucks don’t plan to re-sign these three players — or even if they do — they need to start exploring the trade market so that they don’t lose any of these players for nothing.

There’s a certain amount of irony that Benning, a former NHL defenceman, hasn’t been able to build a quality defence corps over his seven years as GM of the Canucks.

Instead, many of his attempts to revamp the defence have been among his biggest debacles — his trade for Erik Gudbranson, choosing Luca Sbisa over Shea Theodore in the Ryan Kesler trade, Matt Bartkowski in general, and picking Juolevi over Matthew Tkachuk. The jury’s still out on Tyler Myers’ five-year, $36 million deal, it has the potential to look very bad in the near future.

to acquire Schmidt for just a third-round pick, the rest of the defence is a quagmire.

The truth is, the Canucks will have limited cap space available next season to improve the defence thanks to Hughes, Elias Pettersson, and Thatcher Demko all needing new contracts. The Canucks will have to hope for Juolevi or Rathbone to take a big step forward or they’ll have to get creative in free agency or the trade market to fill in their roster.

Most of all, the Canucks need to find a defenceman that can play in a shutdown role who isn’t in their mid-thirties.

Grassroots charity seeks to raise $9,000 for Vancouver Food Bank

A

Vancouver-based grassroots charitable organization is celebrating another year of operation by continuing what it set out to do nine years ago; inspire people to give back to those less fortunate on their birthdays.

Feed the People was started

by Ariel Swan on her birthday nearly a decade ago and since then the organization has created fundraising events to give back to those in need in Vancouver and beyond.

This year though, what with coronavirus restrictions cancelling any and all events, Swan is moving fundraising efforts online.

“This year I am hoping to raise $9,000 in food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank instead of running an event,” Swan wrote on her GoFundMe campaign page.

“Join me in making a difference in our community. Each $1 we raise has the power to buy $3 worth of food at the Food Bank, so any amount you can donate makes an impact.”

In Feed The People’s nine years of existence, the organization has inspired 3,000 volunteers to join events, contributors have served over 50,000 meals and distributed over $100,000 of new socks, underwear, and clothes.

The organization's reach has also gone international, building houses and a community centre in El Salvador and running campaigns to feed children in rural Peru.

“Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause. I can't believe it's been 9 years of Feed the People,” Swan wrote. “I am forever grateful to everyone who has supported me and Feed the People since the beginning. I can't wait until we can run events again.”

Both have won the Canadian Brewing Awards Beer of the Year award (Fat Tug in 2011, Nectarous in 2016)). Both breweries have a bevy vy of other beverage awards as well. So yes, th his was a heavyweigh ht battlle.

Four Winds actually had two other beers finish in the top eight, with Juxtapose (6) and La Maison (8).

Beers from what's become Victoria's brewing district (around Rock Bay) did well. Dark Matter from Hoyne Brewing (which neighbours Driftwood) took third, while Blue Buck (a long-time favourite in pubs around Victoria), finished fourth--it's brewed at Phillips just a short walk from the other two.

Dat Juice from Twin Sales in Port Moody and Dageraad Blonde from Burnaby rounded out the top eight, meaning no beers brewed in the City of Vancouver cracked the quarter-finals. Beers from outside the most populous regions of B.C. didn't do so well, with only Tofino's Kelp Stout making it to the round of 16.

A two-ton, 18-foot sculpture of a red giant has been erected in Yaletown

I

f you thought Yaletown might look better with a giant red human bent over, then you're in luck.

A new sculpture has been added to the neighbourhood courtesy of the Vancouver Biennale. The sculpture festival has brought 'The Proud Youth' to the seawall just off Marinaside Crescent.

"It’s a clear shout-out to our inner child, and the perfect, playful beginning to the Vancouver Biennale’s six-month extension to its 2018-2020 exhibition," states the festival organizers in a press release.

The Vancouver Biennale usually runs for two years at a time; right now we're nearing the end of the 2018-2020 edition dubbed 're-IMAGE-n.' However, it's been extended for at least six months.

"The full program will unfold over the spring and summer months and include new public art installations, BIKEnnale/ WALKennale interactive walking and cycling tours, free online educational programs, a new and highly addictive YouTube channel, and immersive augmented reality experiences that will redefine your relationship with art in public space," states the organizers.

'The Proud Youth' is the creation of Chinese sculptor Chen Wenling. He was inspired in part by a book; the name is from a Wuxia (Martial Heroes) novel called The Smiling, Proud Wanderer (Xiao Ao Jiang Hu).

"The bright red colour signifies not only auspiciousness in Chinese tradition,

but also a testament to the artist’s fiery attitude towards life. The red figure, naked and free, fully reveals his honesty and fearlessness," states the festival website.

People can expect a few more public art exhibits to pop up soon as part of the extension. There'll be a LED message board akin to what you see cautioning drivers (except this one will warn about other types of issues), a giant green jellybean and an augmented reality art installation under Cambie Bridge.

"When we announced in May of 2018

the curatorial theme re-IMAGE-n for our 2018-2020 exhibition, we never imagined that halfway through we’d have to reimagine the exhibition itself," says Barrie Mowatt, founder and artistic director, in the press release. "Then along came COVID. It’s been a time of great discovery for us, finding new opportunities for collaboration, new ways to connect to global audiences, and new ways to create and evolve the experience of public art."

But sometimes we have a complicated relationship with a piece of art. It isn't always love at first sight.

A Vancouver woman described a soaring, vibrant piece of public art that she sees every day from her balcony as "fugly."

Michelle Cooper responded to a call-out in one of Vancouver Is Awesome's newsletters recently by asking if we could look into a mural she sees daily from her apartment in the Fairview neighbourhood.

And how does Cooper feel about the "fugly" piece today?

"Facing north and seeing the city, mountains and ocean is heaven. So who in their right mind approved this '80's Sun Ice ski jacket coloured massive mural amidst all that beauty?" she asked.

Visiting their website at enhancearts.ca (a URL that is conveniently located on their sign) I learned that this company offers a range of beauty services as well as reflexology and a number of different massage options.

To help relieve that frickin' stress, no doubt.

Cooper, who originally hails from Alberta, told V.I.A. that she enjoys an unobstructed view of Downtown

Vancouver, and that the sunsets are often "golden."

Before she moved into her new apartment, Cooper said she'd never noticed the mural. Now, she sees it daily "hanging out with the two majestic lions, the ocean and the three ski hills, kind of like a new friend trying to fit in.

My first thought was of 1980’s colours and then I thought of my Sun Ice ski outfit from 1986 in particular."

After writing to V.I.A., Cooper did a bit of research and discovered that ONNI is the building developer.

Entitled "Finger Paint," the artist, Elizabeth McIntosh,

"Needless to say, after researching the background, today I have a different perspective. Yes, art is all about perspective but perspective is also about evolving, isn’t it?

I feel evolved today. Today I am choosing to embrace it and quite honestly I’m embracing the pretty cool 1980’s memories it evoked in me."

Cooper added that she also connected with a past ski buddy and enjoyed a few moments of happy memories from the ’80s, too.

"Tomorrow, I will wake up and it will still be there.

Tomorrow, however, I might actually say good morning to my new mural and my old ski jacket, which was quite honestly, my favourite ski outfit ever."

Alcohol delivery from bars and restaurants here to stay

estaurants and pubs in B.C. will now permanently be able to sell and deliver packaged alcohol with meal

orders.

The change was initially a temporary one at the outset of the pandemic to support the food and beverage industry.

"Making this authorization permanent will provide approximately 8,000 businesses with long-term financial support and certainty, and will aid in the hospitality industry's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said

Before the pandemic, food and liquor primary licensees (e.g., restaurants and pubs) were authorized to sell liquor only for consumption in their establishments unless they had a special endorsement on their licence.

In March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government temporarily authorized these licensees to sell and deliver sealed, packaged liquor products for off-site consumption with the purchase of a meal for takeout

or delivery. Since then, the government has extended the temporary authorization three times in response to requests from licensees, the industry, and the public.

This is the second temporary authorization the government has made permanent. In February 2021, B.C. announced restaurants, bars, and tourism operators with liquor licences were able to purchase beer, wine and spirits at wholesale prices permanently.

n what sounds like it came from someone's fever dream, Ashanti is in Vancouver right now to shoot for a film that will feature work by the guy who did the A Star is Born soundtrack with Lady Gaga called The Honey Girls which is based on a toy line from Build-a-Bear.

The singer, who's best known for a string of hits in the early 2000s (often with Ja Rule), posted on Instagram yesterday that she's "Cozy" in Vancouver.

"Super excited about this movie," she says in another post about The Honey Girls.

The film's lead is Instagram/ Tik Tok/YouTube star Tessa Brookes (one of Jake Paul's discoveries), and also appears to be in Vancouver. Mark Nilan, Jr., who co-wrote the music with Lady Gaga for A Star is Born is also attached, according to EW.

The film is based on the Honey Girls line of toys, which are a group of pop star teddy bears.

"Three young musicians participate in a talent competition to discover the next great solo artist, hosted by global pop-star Fancy G (Ashanti). On the upside though, contributing to the growing numbers of vaccinated British Columbians has been a thrilling experience.

"I was so excited, I was the first person to give a COVID vaccine from my health unit to a senior at home,” she says.

“Even just like holding the vaccine, I was like ‘oh my gosh we've been waiting for so long for this it seems so surreal that I'm holding this vaccine and giving it to someone,’ it was really exciting."

Since then she and her health unit have been giving approximately 100 vaccines every day, which means going to each recipient’s home and administering the shot there.

"Once we call them everyone has a big sense of relief," Carson says, noting other little golden moments she has seen while vaccinating patients.

Jane Carson has been a community health nurse for Vancouver Coastal Health for the last four years. She regularly visits patients’ homes and helps them with anything they might need, from palliative care to home support. Now, though, she and her team have been pulled to help administer COVID-19 vaccines for the health region.

"It's been a strange year as it has been for everyone,” Carson says. "On a personal level it's tough for me because my family is all in Victoria... in wanting to be extra careful as a nurse and not exposing my family or my patients, not travelling and not seeing them has been challenging."

As the pandemic progressed, Carson saw herself as the broken link in her family’s safety.

"Because everyone else could stay home and healthcare workers didn't and were around sick people, it was kind of like 'oh stay away from the nurses,’” she says.

Due to the nature of her work, she would visit many homes each day, a very different workplace compared to the sanitized, relatively controlled environment of a hospital.

When Carson heard the stayat-home orders, she knew her work put her more at risk of contracting the virus.

Female calf brings hope for resident orca population

T

hree new orca calves born over the past six months — and five since 2019 — provide a glimmer of hope for the future of southern resident killer whales.

And when one revealed itself as a female last week, it inspired even more optimism for the fledgling pods, say researchers.

“Every female is a future matriarch, a mother of potentially five, six or seven babies over their lifetime,” said Kelley Balcomb-Bartok of the Center for Whale Research in Friday Harbour, Washington, which tracks the endangered resident orcas.

“Males are, of course, welcome and valued, too, but every girl born is precious to [the southern residents’] existence. Even after their reproductive days are over,

they play major roles.”

Researchers have confirmed that J58, born last September, was indeed a female, to the delight of the whale-watching community.

Photographer Jeanne Hyde had captured the baby whale on the west side of San Juan Island on Saturday playing with her mother, J58, as she was rolling and showing her underside.

J58 hasn’t been nicknamed as yet. She was born Sept. 24 — the second calf welcomed to J Pod after J57 was born Sept. 4 and later confirmed as a male. He was the first calf born to the pod in more than two years.

Now everybody is awaiting the gender reveal on the latest birth.

Sale of frozen B.C. spot prawns could be illegal: Fisheries, seafood businesses, chefs frustrated

F

isheries, seafood distributors, chefs, and restaurant owners in B.C. are frustrated that a core portion of their seasonal business could be wiped out following a ruling issued by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

One of the most-anticipated food events each spring is spot prawn season, when, for about four weeks, the plump, white-spotted prawns are harvested in the province and enjoyed locally and abroad.

While you can purchase live spot prawns by the pound from local fishmongers, direct from the boats at docks in Vancouver at Granville Island, Richmond in Steveston, Ladner in Delta or at grocery stores, one key part of the business is the frozen-at-sea spot prawns.

An interpretation of a new ruling by the DFO, however, would find the sale of any spot prawns frozen-at-sea illegal.

The ruling, as written, indicates the following: "No person who catches and retains a fish under the authority of a license issued for the purpose of commercial fishing shall have the fish in possession if the fish is skinned, cut, packed or otherwise dealt with in such a manner that […] where size limits are applicable, the size of the fish cannot be readily determined."

That means tubs of frozen-at-sea spot prawn tails could be off the market.

Members of the industry are asking for public

support in challenging the decision, supporting B.C. harvesters, and giving consumers the ability to continue the movement to access Canadian prawns and eat locally.

“Canadians want access to Canadian food. If there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s that our dependence on imported products presents a threat to our food security. Our federal and provincial governments have been working hard to help support small-scale food producers, especially during these uncertain times. Taking away harvesters’ ability to sell prawns to Canadian consumers undermines all the progress we’ve made toward robust, secure and healthy local food systems,” notes Sonia Strobel, CEO of Skipper Otto Community Supported Fishery who works with three BC harvesters to supply prawns for their members.

Currently, the industry is awaiting any possible clarification about the ruling from the DFO, which could come in the next few days.

In B.C., about 2,450 metric tonnes of spot prawns are harvested annually, with about 65% coming from the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The industry dates back over a century in the province.

“The situation is extremely frustrating,” says James Lawson, harvester from the Heiltsuk First Nation. "For us multi-species fishermen, spot prawn harvest is by far our most premium product accounting for half of my gross earnings last year. If the federal government prohibits me from freezing prawns, the reality

is I will lose my business. It makes no sense.”

While consumers may be frustrated at the lack of availability of frozen-at-sea spot prawns at the retail level, chefs and restaurant owners are also worried how the ruling could affect their spring menu offerings.

“For the past two decades, chefs have passionately had the backs of harvesters and consumers to successfully build the domestic spot pawn industry and advocate for supporting our local food friends and

partners,” remarks Ned Bell, chef/partner at the Naramata Inn and founder of Chefs for Oceans. “Pulling the rug out on harvesters will be leaving holes on the menus of restaurants throughout the country. For everyone’s sake - chefs, restaurants, consumers, harvesters, communities and our environment, we sincerely hope that this decision will be reconsidered.”

This woman invented the London Fog in Vancouver on the way to work, and when she was pregnant with her first child, Molly, that didn't stop, even though other things changed.

"I had severe morning sickness, so a lot of things didn't taste right," Loria explains.

However, hot drinks and a caffeine fix still appealed to her, so she mused on what could replace her morning coffee.

"There was this young woman who worked there, she was awesome and we got to know her over time we got there. I asked her to make me an Earl Grey tea, but with skim milk."

Loria was just trying to find something she could drink that might help replace coffee for a while.

"I was thinking, if (the milk) was hot enough, it would make the tea," she explains.

"Honestly, you could probably call it a craving; it was problem-solving."

She regularly drank tea as well as coffee, so the idea made sense to her, a "natural blending." The barista wasn't convinced.

"I think she was skeptical of it; I vaguely remember her being like 'are you sure?'" Loria says.

"It worked, cause I continued to order them."

After getting her hot milk and steam combo, she'd go over to the little mix station that had toppings people could add to their drinks and would sprinkle in vanilla sugar to her own taste.

Pleased with the drink she'd come up with, Loria went on to recommend others get the same drink and ordered it herself at other cafes around town. The trend spread.

As time went on and Molly was born, Loria's relationship to the drink lessened and before London Fogs were on the menu at every cafe she had returned to her old habits.

"I feel like... I moved on from

drinking them, then all of a sudden I saw them around," she says. "It was kinda like 'oh I used to drink this drink.'"

At first, Loria didn't realize her connection to the drink, because the name wasn't something she recognized.

"I didn't come up with the name," she says. "Someone else fully formed the idea and named it London Fog." Her friends know about her history with London Fogs and joke about it, and it's come up when she orders drinks around Victoria, where she now lives. She actually works as a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria now in their arts department, and makes mugs herself.

"There's this super cute cafe here in town, Hide and Seek," she says. "One day we were in there; it was kind of later in the day, and I wanted something to drink but not coffee."

"The guy suggested a London Fog -- I giggled and said 'I guess I should.'"

Her connection to the drink has been written about online, but she has no idea who wrote about it first. The version that's been floating around online is essentially correct, she adds.

Funnily enough, she doesn't get them too often these days.

"I still drink Earl Grey tea on a regular basis, but I don't drink it like a latte, I drink it like a regular tea," she says.

She's back to coffee as her primary hot caffeine beverage.

However, the London Fog seems to be in the family genes now.

"All of my kids [drink London Fogs]," she says. "Funny enough, my eldest daughter likes them more than the others."

Opinion: Here's why petitions have lost their impact in Vancouver

W

e’ve all experienced the hard sell on the street corner by someone trying to get us to sign their petition. Save the Planet, No Nukes, Pipeline Pro and Pipeline Con -- there’s a petition for everything. And while we may not always agree with the wide-eyed, clipboard-holding, pen-wielding activist, we usually respect that they are working hard for a cause they truly believe in.

Generally, the intent of a petition is clear. What isn’t as certain is its impact on real change.

Will the politicians listen? Will the atrocities stop? Will the air be cleared? Will common sense prevail?

The humble street corner, the in-person petition is losing ground to technological change (cursed internet!). Last year, Change.org, the leader in digital online petitions, saw tens of millions of people across the globe sign petitions hosted on their platform. Change.org has made it so easy to set-up, market, and get signatures that the benefits of petitions must now be reconsidered.

Recently, the return of the dreaded or beloved (no judgment here -- life’s too short) summer bike lane in Stanley Park sparked a battle of petitions -- pro and con. The “Keep Stanley Park open for all!” petition, for example, currently

has 30,000 signatures and counting. The apparently less popular “Reopen the temporary bike lane around Stanley Park” petition has fewer signatures but is the official con to the pro (or is it pro to the con?).

Unlike petitions of yore, where binders full of thousands of sheets of paper with names, addresses, and signatures were dramatically dumped on the desks of the local leaders, petitions these days, like the ones on Change.org, are digitally transmitted to email inboxes, posted on social media, and trumpeted to local media. And on every side of the issue, we hear announced by the eager organizers that THEIR petition is the true representation of the people’s will. That may be true, but how is anyone to know for sure? Is more better or could less be more?

Good politicians weigh the facts and balance the mood of the people with the evidence before them. Is a locally-driven, community petition a fact or a trend? The pressure to bow to the pressure of one petition’s digital weight versus another, less popular, lighter-weight counterargument is real.

As a result, it’s imperative that leaders don’t throw out

the data from any drive for online signatures. Instead, it should be received as non-scientific data -- an imperfect representation of the public mood. And then, leaders must rely on proven facts and the advice of trusted staff, experts, and process. Decision-makers must ensure data is collected with minimal leading questions, there are no gaps or missed opportunities, all while not steamrolling the process, obfuscating or avoiding tough questions from the people, the reporters, and other politicians.

We elect people to make educated, fact-filled, instinctive decisions. They should also give the appropriate weight to the opinions and passion of petitions signed by people with handles like melikeybikelanes@gmail.com, carsforever@ outlook.com, and 7f7f098s@telus.net.

GRAHAM, Allan E. April 17, 1921 − February 17, 2021 We are so very sad to announce the passing of our dear Dad, Allan (Buster) Ellsworth Graham at VGH, following a fall and hip fracture at home. We were so very grateful that Dad was able to live at home until the end. He was exactly two months shy of his 100th birthday. It seems he wanted to celebrate that milestone with Mom/his beloved wife, Kathleen, who predeceased him on September 9, 2017.

We will remember him as a kind, generous, calm, patient, gentle, humble and very smart man. He loved to read, enjoyed playing crib and was a great crossword man. After retirement, he took up the hobby of winemaking and made some mighty fine wines.

Growing up as the son of a CPR Engineer he spent his early years in North Bend, BC. He always loved the place and wanted to go back often.

He served in the Army in WW2, stationed in Halifax and Little Mountain in Vancouver. He worked on the sea for most of his life in various posts, culminating in his position as Chief Engineer on the BC Ferries. He often joked that even though he worked on the water most of his adult life he couldn’t swim.

He is survived by his children, Joan, Ken (Sandra), Linda (Doug), and Ron (Linda); and granddaughters, Alison and Kayla.

As per his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be placed with Mom at Mountainview Cemetery in Vancouver. A celebration of life will be held at a later time when it is safe.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Salvation Army or any other charity of your choice.

Thank you to the kind and compassionate nurses and doctors at VGH, and to his family physician, Dr. Paul Beveridge.
