B.C. may be headed towards 'baby bust' due to COVID-19

Kate Choi is a family demographer, inequality scholar, and quantitative sociologist who is currently working as an associate professor of sociology at Western University in Ontario.

Choi believes this trend is not unique to Canada having seen birth rates decline in the United States and East Asia due to COVID-19.

"It is following a pattern that is consistent with historical patterns that fertility tends to

Choi noted it would be helpful to see the numbers as the months progress to give a more detailed analysis but so far the falling birth rate does follow historical examples. For instance, Choi mentioned there was no such birth rate decline during the 10 hour blackout New York City experienced in 1965 as opposed to the decline seen following the Spanish Flu of 1918.

The reason for the decrease Choi says is put simply, a great deal of uncertainty. Additional data will point more directly to which issue most affected B.C.’s birth rate but Choi says there are a number of issues that affect birth rates that have already been identified in other countries.

Chief among those reasons was uncertainty with the economy and job security coupled with the already rising costs of child-rearing.

Closely related to the economics point is housing security, followed by personal safety or safety of the baby.

City launches coyote education campaign

F

ollowing more reports of coyotes in Stanley Park chasing and 'nipping' at joggers and cyclists, the City of Vancouver's Park Board has launched a public education campaign aimed at informing the public about co-existing with these wild canines.

About a dozen coyotes reportedly call the park home. Though the animals are naturally scared of humans, coyotes tend to become bold and aggressive when fed by people, the city explained in a Jan. 22 news release.

Last week, park rangers opted to close trails in Stanley Park's Brockton Oval and Hollow Tree area, near Prospect Point, for the second time in as many weeks due to reports of coyotes behaving aggressively.

"Unfortunately, people are removing the barriers or walking around them and continuing on the trails," Park Board staff explained in the release.

Organization Feels Great

Two more people were chased by coyotes Thursday night, one of whom was bitten.

The woman was jogging in the Hollow Tree area on the west side of Stanley Park when a coyote bit her at approximately 5 p.m.

"The force of the incident caused her to fall over," BC Conservation officers explained in a Facebook post. The woman reportedly sought treatment in hospital, and was released.

The pair join a total of around 13 people who have reported being chased by coyotes in Stanley Park in recent weeks. Members of the BC Conservation Officer Service are now working to find and capture the animal involved in the latest aggressive incidents, according to the release.

As part of the coyote education campaign, visitors to Stanley Park can expect to see park rangers stationed at a booth near Lumberman’s Arch throughout the next two weeks, doling out educational materials from the Stanley Park Ecology Society.

These rangers will be advising park users about the importance of refraining from feeding coyotes or any other wildlife.

"Wildlife feeding is a significant issue in our parks, which has impacts to wildlife health and behaviour. It breaks down our healthy boundary with wildlife and can lead to aggressive animal behaviour towards people," reads the release.

"And, please, respect barriers rangers have installed in the park."

OPINION: You can show you care by wearing a mask while going through drive-thrus

In fact, we wear masks into every establishment we enter these days, for the same reason.

Signs on the door tell us that we're not allowed to enter if we're not abiding by the Public Health Order that's meant to slow the transmission of COVID-19.

However, I have yet to see a sign in any drive-thru I've been through over the

past 11 months—and I have been through MANY—that requests that we wear a mask for the safety of the workers who are taking our money and handing us our food in that setting.

Starbucks doesn't seem to have them.

McDonald's, Wendy's and A&W too, and even those that do would find it hard to enforce.

As a result, you'll notice that not everybody in their cars is wearing them as they get their food, or coffee, or whatever they ordered.

Sure we're in our cars that are technically outside, but we come closer than 6 feet to these front-line workers, so we should be wearing masks.

Not only is it a sign of respect to the people working these jobs, but it just might help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Let's all wear a mask for a minute as we're driving through. It's a tiny gesture that will show these workers how much we appreciate them.

Vegan 'butcher' shop from Victoria opening Vancouver location

Specifically, the vegan "meat"-maker is setting up at 285 West 5th Avenue on the ground floor of the new Relic Entertainment building.

hen a family member or a friend dies, people rally around and offer support. When a pet owner loses his best friend they often grieve alone.

I lost my beloved "Bogie" two years ago and it was an extremely difficult time. The callous comments made by "well meaning" people accentuated my grief. I've spoken to other pet parents and we have come up with some of the worst things to say after hearing a much loved pet has died.

1. Oh are you getting another one?

2. Oh well, they are a lot of work.

3. Oh well, you have lots of other things to keep you busy.

The pet parents I've spoken to find these remarks very hurtful as it minimizes their loss.

The next time you encounter a grieving pet owner show them you care by offering your condolences or send them a sympathy card.

he oldest man in Canada has now received his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

JaHyung Lee, who celebrated his 110th birthday in September of last year, was administered the Pfizer/ BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at Metro Vancouver's Amenida Seniors Community in mid January, the assisted living facility shared in a news release.

According to the facility, all residents who gave their consent—or had consent provided on their behalf by a family member or decisionmaker—were able to receive their first dose of the vaccine on the same day as Lee. "We are extremely lucky that we have received enough

supplies to vaccinate all of our residents in care," said Rosa Park, Amenida Seniors Community's general manager, in the release. "As many of our seniors are elderly and require complex care, we can feel safer knowing that the virus won't be spreading within our community."

Residents are reportedly set to receive their second doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the coming weeks.

As both the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent vaccination effort remain

ongoing, staff and residents at the assisted living facility say they are continuing to practice all the necessary health and safety protocols.

"While the majority of group activities have been cancelled, certain activities have been modified to meet new regulations and increase morale at the seniors' care home," reads the release. For example, religious services and exercise programs are now offered through streaming services.

'Do not make plans,' warns Henry in plea to stem Family Day travel “

e won’t be at a place where we can travel.”

That was Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s message Friday, Jan. 22, responding to questions over whether the province’s plan to vaccinate 4.3 million people by October would open up non-essential travel to British Columbians over the next several months.

“We know there are a lot of celebratory events coming up like Chinese New Year. We need those to remain low-key, virtual events this year,” she said.

But on Thursday, Premier John Horgan rejected calls for a ban on interprovincial travel, after seeking a legal review on a potential border lockdown to stem the transmission of COVID-19.

Finding that much of the current interprovincial travel is work-related, and therefore essential, it cannot be restricted, Horgan stated in a written statement.

Until at least the summer, Henry said travel should remain essential with a focus on staying local and “looking at experiencing what we have in B.C. for people in B.C.”
