hile bird feeders are a common sight in backyards this time of the year, the Wildlife Support Centre is urging people to take them down.

The centre, based in Burnaby, says it's had 78 Pine Siskins birds brought in from across the Metro Vancouver region with symptoms of salmonellosis, an infection caused by a member of the Salmonella bacteria family.

"The disease can spread because of its congregating behaviour in backyard feeders during the winter,” states the organization in a news release.

“Once a bird is infected, mortality rates rapidly increase among all birds who contact the feeder. Distressed birds must be handled safely and with care to prevent the spread through animals and humans.”

The best way for people to prevent the spread is to completely remove their bird feeders for the winter.

If a pet comes across a potentially infected or dead bird, monitor them for signs of

infection, including diarrhea or lethargy.

In Delta, one resident has found Pine Siskins dead under trees in her yard. Jennifer Keskula has had birds fly into her windows before (and has set up stickers so they stop) but has found six Pine Siskins over the past couple of months

dead in areas away from the windows.

“When I find a bird dead further from the windows I started to ask myself why?” she says.

She echoes the centre's suggestion. Currently, she only has a hummingbird feeder up, which she cleans

regularly with a weak bleach solution (which is also recommended by the centre).

NHL, of course, and teams can see their playoff fortunes teeter on the brink with just one injury to a key player. The difference is that injuries are not contagious.

The NHL has already had a couple of COVID-19 scares at training camps, including an outbreak for the Dallas Stars, who had six players and two staff test positive for the disease, causing the postponement of their first three games of the season. Three other teams, including the Canucks, cancelled practices, each of them citing “an abundance of caution.”

If it it’ss an abundance of caution, it it’ss certainly not an overabundance. That would likely mean cancelling the season altogether, rather than flying from city to city. At the very least, it’s more caution than they’ve been showing in Russian hockey: Canucks prospect Vasily Podkolzin saw more than half his KHL team test positive for COVID-19 in September and the team still played on, with teenagers called up from junior hockey filling the roster.

The truth is, COVID-19 outbreaks in the NHL are inevitable this season. This isn’t

the playoff bubble they arranged in the summer, with teams carefully quarant quarantined away from the outside world. Players w won’t’ be in hotels all season, but at home wi with their families, many of whom have kid kids in school. They’ll be traveling to differen different cities, playing in different arenas, with differe different arena crews, each of whom has their o own families and connections to the comm community.

“I don't want to be the one to get it an and bring it back to my family,” said Canuc Canucks captain Bo Horvat. “That's just somet something that you have to keep in the back of yo your mind: be safe, follow the proper proto l protocols, wear a mask, hygiene, all that kind of sstuff is going to be important for a long tim time, to keep myself and my family and my teammates safe.”

Even with an abundance of caution, th the risk is real. All it takes is a few people to sh show a little less caution and it will pop the bu bubble.

The question is how will the NHL ha dl handle things when those outbreaks inevitabl inevitably come? Or, perhaps more importantly, how will the provincial health authorities in Canada, whose approval was so hard to come by, react if things go south for th the NHL during the season?

The NHL is willing to take the risk, b because they feel the greater risk is to the botto bottom line.

The Sci-Fi Summit will be coming to ver in July. The three-day event (July 16-18) Vancouver will see the likes of William Shatner, Jeri Ryan and Marina Sirtis take the stage. "We've postponed about 30 shows so ffar,"" Berman says.

There's a bit of a gap in their sched schedule right now, but with more conventi conventions planned for mid-March he says the they're preparing to postpone those.

"We’re not going to run them until that time (that they are safe)," he says.

However, by July he's hopeful the Vancouver event will be able to go forward as people get vaccinated.

"The fans have so much pent up de desire to come to one of our events it's cra crazy," he says.

Whether it happens in July or on a later date, Berman says attendees can expect a theatrical presentation with w the guests on stage. Panels, performances performa and question and answer periods are expected, along with chances to get g autographs with the celebrities. There'll T be a vendor space as well.

Shatner's appearance will be a high h highlight, he notes, as the famed Canadian ac actor is turning 90 this year.

"We’re presenting a documentary o of his life," Berman says. "It’s kinda a 'wel 'welcome back to Canada' for his 90th birthd birthday."

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenbe Roddenberry's life will be celebrated as well, as he'd h have turned 100 this year.

Tickets will go on sale when Creat Creation has a fully booked slate of guests, B Berman adds; that should happen within th the next month.

"We’re looking forward to seeing eeveryone when it’s safe," he says.

Polish startup called Omni Calculator has released a Vaccine Queue Calculator for Canada online.

Jasmine Mah, who is a recent MSc graduate from Ontario, and her friend Steven Wooding, partnered with the company to bring the tool to life.

In an email, Mah tells Vancouver Is Awesome that she was inspired to create it because a question "still lingers in millions of minds like mine - How far in the queue am I?" She decided to make that guesswork a little easier.

The tool is based on the national

guidelines priority list that the Canadian government released, and is fairly simple to use.

After answering questions in a few dropdown menus, the calculator spits out an estimated date that they think you might be able to get one of the vaccines that the government is rolling out.

It by no means provides a guaranteed vaccination date, but will give you a rough idea of when you might expect to be vaccinated for COVID-19 coronavirus in Canada.

f you've travelled along the Arbutus Greenway in Kitsilano recently, you've probably noticed a series of five eye-catching billboards, brightly papered with timely, thought-provoking statements.

For example, "Doing nothing is very different than having nothing to do."

The man responsible for the displays is Douglas Coupland, the renowned British Columbian novelist and visual artist—the same artist responsible for the Digital Orca sculpture located beside the Vancouver Convention Centre, the Golden Tree at Marine and Cambie, and the Terry Fox Memorial in front of BC Place, to name just a few.

The new billboards display a selection of Coupland’s “Slogans for the 21st Century."

Shortly after the pandemic struck, Coupland began "retooling some classics for Instagram," as he explained in a March 20, 2020 post.

"Don’t mean to be a bummer. These are all from a project that began in 2011 and somehow they seem to have been activated by 2020. I’ll post something funny next," he wrote under one graphic that reads, "You know the future is happening for real when you start feeling scared."

Since, his Instagram feed has been plastered with these types of phrases, appearing in simple lettering against bold backgrounds. Some are hilarious, while others—though written pre-pandemic—feel eerily predictive. For example, "It's probably for the best we're all online instead of being outside and wrecking

everything"—"[f]rom 2013," as Coupland explained in the caption—or, "Bored people crave war," from 2011.

The project that's seen some of these slogans displayed on Kitsilano billboards is a collaboration between Coupland, Pattison Billboards, Kim Spencer-Nairn, and McKinley Studios, an integrated design firm based in Vancouver and Calgary.

City releases their weirdest 3-1-1 calls of 2020

W

e all know 9-1-1 operators receive more than a few terrible calls each year, but it turns out the City of Vancouver's 3-1-1 contact centre fielded its own fair share of strange inquiries in 2020.

For example, can you keep a camel in Vancouver, if only for its milk?

As City of Vancouver staff explained in a news release, that question "was one of the most memorable" posed to the city’s 3-1-1 contact centre in the last calendar year.

And, if you're wondering, livestock (including camels) are not permitted to be kept in Vancouver backyards.

One caller contacted 3-1-1 because they "heard we’re allowed to dump one mattress and one piece of furniture in a back alley each year," and wanted to confirm the rumour was correct.

The four above-mentioned calls represented only a few of the nearly 1 million interactions across all contact centre channels that 3-1-1 staff experienced in 2020.

The most frequently asked questions don't relate to camel-related inquiries, unfortunately, but instead request information about property tax, empty homes tax, and homeowner grants.

The 3-1-1 contact centre first launched as a phone line in 2009. Today, it encompasses a growing number of channels through which Vancouverites can submit service requests and civicrelated inquiries. According to the city, phone remains the most popular method of contact for local residents, with the centre experiencing 505,307 calls in 2020.

To date, there have been over 13 million interactions to date across all of the Centre's channels, including the 3-1-1 phone line, VanConnect app, live chat online, and the City of Vancouver's official social media accounts.

The contact centre is intended as a tool for Vancouver residents and businesses, offering a single point-of-access to important city information and nonemergency services.

Each year, the citizen service representatives on the receiving end of the city's phone line "receive a wide range of questions, from the mundane to the weird and the wonderful," reads the release.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, "last year was no exception."

Some of the more unique calls these representatives dealt with in 2020 included one resident who asked, "Can you remove a dog from my bedroom? A friend left it, but

I don’t know who." Animal Services was dispatched, according to the city.

Another caller contacted 3-1-1 to advise city staff of some trees in Vancouver's open data set that the caller claimed were incorrectly listed as apple trees.

"I’ve been eating the fruit and they are definitely not apples," they said. (Unfortunately, city representatives were not able to confirm what the caller had eaten.)

Nintendo acquires Vancouver developer behind ‘Luigi’s Mansion’ series

N

intendo has a new corporate sibling on the West Coast.

The Japanese gaming giant recently announced that it’s acquiring Vancouver-based Next Level Games Inc. (NLG), best known for developing the second and third games in the Luigi’s Mansion series.

The Luigi titles were

developed specifically for Nintendo’s own consoles beginning in the 2010s.

And NLG’s own history with characters from the Mario Bros. universe stretches back to 2005 with the launch of Super Mario Strikers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, however, Nintendo did reveal that all of NLG’s shares are held by its owner-

directors and employees.

“A number of owner-directors recently determined that the time is right for them to sell their shares and NLG therefore began exploring potential sale transactions,” Nintendo said in a release.

The acquisition is expected to close March 1, 2021.

Penthouse strip club sign reveals cheeky message

Locally, pro-Trump demonstrators gathered outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery this week to protest the result of the United States presidential election.

The Penthouse sign, which is so often right on point, has injected a little levity for Vancouverites who have been glued to the unsettling coverage from south of the border, marking the final days of the Trump presidency.

The comment, of course, points to the apparent ease with which insurrectionists under the banners of "MAGA," QAnon, Proud Boys, and other extremist movements, were able to crash the barriers and gain access to the capitol building and disrupt the U.S. Congress as they debated certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election.

n June 19th, 1970, one of the world's most famous stunt performers, Evel Knievel, made a jump that seems to have mostly disappeared from our collective memory.

Then 31 years old, Knievel was described in the Vancouver Sun that day as "a born loser who thinks he's winning."

Reporter Dave Watters wrote a number of articles for the Sun about the stunt, leading up to it and after.

Interviewing Knievel, he learned that the performer made $300,000 per year, "gobs of money", as Watters describes it.

He wrote, "To say he is nuts is only partly correct. Because of the [jumps] he has missed, he is also screws, bolts, metal plates, and the Lord only knows what else."

Knievel told him, "They don't come to see me die, they come to see me jump. But if I get it they want to be there."

He also explained where he got his stage name from.

"I got tagged with it one time back home when I was in jail on theft," he told the Sun reporter over a steak and lobster dinner, "One of the guys in another cell was named Knoffle.

This guard thought it was funny as hell and he hollers 'Hot damn! We got us Evil Knievel in one cell and Awful Knoffle in the next!'"

The showman swapped out a vowel, and that was that.

He rode a 750cc American Eagle in Vancouver that night, attempting to jump 12 cars inside the stadium where the Canucks would play their first NHL season a few months later.

The daredevil had never jumped more than 11 cars indoors, and 4,000 people gathered to watch him try to go over 12, inbetween races during the Canadian Indoor Motorcycle Championship races.

Did he make it?

He sure did. And it was nearly flawless.

In a followup piece in the Sun the next day, Watters quotes him as saying "The only thing that bothers me about the jump is that I didn't land where I should have. I cut off a bit early on the take-off and didn't hit where I should have."

he Waterfront Station area we travel through has undergone dramatic changes as a transportation hub in Vancouver.

This construction progress photograph, taken by the building’s construction contractors Westinghouse, Church, Kerr & Co., shows the site excavation for the third CPR station was well underway in October 1912.

The station eventually opened just under two years later in the summer of 1914.

The turret of the second CPR station, with its chateau-style architecture, can be seen on the right edge of the photograph.

This second station had a short-lived existence. Its first stone was laid in April 1898. By 1914, the building was demolished and replaced by more train passenger platforms and a traffic bridge that connected to Pier D where CPR coastal steamers docked.

New downtown park to open in late spring

They'll have lights and a pair of hammocks installed, as well.

Sky frames are also coming, structures 20 m to 30 m high; they'll create a sort of ceiling to the park. Man-Bourdon notes a pair of bike lanes will flank the park as well, to separate it from vehicle traffic.

Other features will include a large playground (with a three-story play-structure) and a water feature that will recycle water (water used in the feature will then go to the toilets in the cafe). While there won't be a field, some trees are planned, to attract birds and pollinators.

Currently, the site is being referred to as the Smithe and Richards Park, but Man-Bourdon says a process is underway to name the new park.

Funding for the park came from development cost levies.

he city is aiming to open its first new park in downtown Vancouver in nearly a decade this spring.

Ground broke a year ago on the 0.8-acre site at Smithe and Richards streets; the hope is to open it in April or May says Alexandre Man-Bourdon, a senior project manager with the Vancouver Parks Board.

"Things have been going quite well so far, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead," he says.

The city has already faced some challenges and the $13.8 million project is overbudget Man-Bourdon notes. That's due to unforeseen site conditions below the surface; while the site was most recently a gravel parking lot, buildings stood there before.

An exact number isn't available he says, since the project isn't finished yet.

While not a big park, Man-Bourdon explains it's a much more complex park than what people might have in mind. The city is trying to fit a lot into a small area since land for parks in the city's core is scarce and there's a lot of different interests looking to use park space.

"It needs to be robust, so it can handle that day-in-day-out traffic," he notes, explaining that 10,000 people could move through the yet-unnamed park in a day.

Passers-by to the site should keep an eye out in the next little while as large-scale pieces begin to show up.

"We’ve got a few months left in the construction," Man-Bourdon says. "The site is going to be changing really quickly."

The much-discussed bridge structures, which will cross above the park and give it more square-footage are being built in Surrey; soon spans ranging from 60 to 100 feet will be lifted into place.

Local couple creates photoblog visiting over 250 Vancouver parks

local couple made the most of staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year by exploring Vancouver's beautiful parks.

Steven Smethurst, who describes himself as a "Maker, Hacker, Coder, Artist, and all-around great guy," realized that he wasn't going to get a great deal of exercise after his office shut down in March 2020 and he started working from home. For the first few weeks of the pandemic, he says he felt somewhat blue.

"The lack of daily exercise, the same four walls every day, and the general stress of COVID were causing me to be mildly depressed," he writes in a blog post.

As a fun project, Smethurst's partner suggested that they should explore the city's parks.

While the city has over 250 of them, they realized that they could visit each one by the end of the year if they made it to a couple of them daily. And for parks along bike paths, they realized they could see a

dozen a day while they were biking around.

For proof, the creative duo snapped a selfie in front of each local park's sign and shared it on social media.

It took the couple seven months to complete the project, and they visited their last park on Dec. 19, 2020.

On his blog, Smethurst says that one of his favourite parks

is Deering Island Park: "The small park on Deering island, has a good bench with great views of the Fraser River.

From this park, you can walk the Fraser river trail and see a bit of Vancouver’s historic milling sites."

Smethurst writes that he started off by making a spreadsheet of all the parks, which he sorted by neighbourhood. The couple then tried to visit them based on neighbourhoods, but found it better to create a google map of all parks across the city and check them off as they visited them.

"This was a great project for COVID-19 (2020).

It allowed us to explore different neighbourhoods that we wouldn’t have visited otherwise and got us some exercise. It also helped me mentally deal with COVID-19 and gave me something to look forward to every day," he explains.
