Vancouver's first Korean bubble tea shop now open

Boba Run is located at 102 West Hastings Street (once upon a time this was a Nectar Juicery storefront), where they've been teasing us with their jungle cat logo posted in the shop window for a while now.

And while Vancouverites are on the whole more familiar with using the term "bubble tea,"

they're using the term for the tea drink with tapioca balls or pearls that is more common on the west coast of the United States.

When it comes to flavours, Boba Run is borrowing from the Korean canon: roasted barley, roasted corn and Yu-ja tea. On the menu at Boba Run you'll also find specialty drinks like a Korean Oat ‘N Barley Latte and a Jolly Pong Shake, featuring Korean puffed wheat breakfast cereal.

They're also doing a Honeycomb Dalgona Latte; "dalgona" might ring a bell from earlier this year, when social media users in lockdown

were making a trendy whipped coffee drink that had been named "dalgona" by a Korean TV star who noted the froth's resemblance to a Korean honeycomb treat.

As a further way to get the exact bubble tea - or boba - drink you want, you can customize your order and get your bev hot or cold, and with add-on toppings like boba, lychee jelly, crystal boba, organic chia, honeycomb dalgona, and banana milk pudding.

New app allows you to report all the weird smells you discover

The UBC team recently launched a public web application called Smell Vancouver—or SmellVan, for short— that's designed to track reports of odours throughout the greater Vancouver area.

The app was developed as part of a new research project that's investigating odours and their potential health effects.

It allows anyone to submit a report of an odour, from the mildly unpleasant to the downright pungent, using the app's map.

All reports are anonymous and will be publicly viewable on the map.

If you're walking down the street when an odd or unexpected scent suddenly assaults your nostrils, you can pull out your phone and head straight to the app's submission form to mark your location on the map.

From there, the app will prompt you to pick ratings for the strength and offensiveness of the odour, ranging from low to moderate+ for the strength and from 1 (mildly) to 5 (extremely) when it comes to offensiveness. While they're not the only questions, they are the only two that are mandatory in order to submit a

report. Other optional questions will ask more details about the odour, but keep in mind this information will be shown on the public map.

Those questions allow app users to report a description of the odour—for example, whether it's akin to chemical, decaying animal or fishy smells—as well as any symptoms they might be experiencing, like dizziness, headaches, or sinus congestion. While submitted a report, you can also tell researchers if you've taken any specific actions in response to the smell, from closing windows and doors to heading home from an outdoor run early.

The app also offers users the option to answer questions about themselves. In contrast, that information will be kept private from everyone except UBC researchers, and will not be shown on the public map.

The next step is to click the "submit" button to finalize your report, but it's worth noting that there is no way to delete an odour report after it has been submitted.

If you peruse the map, you'll see several markers organized by colour, indicating how offensive each scent was to the individual who reported it.

user submitted alongside their report, and bingo! You'll officially have all the information you need to determine which parts of town you may want to consider avoiding for the time being.

There have been just under 20 reports submitted, to date.

According to Smell Vancouver, the UBC study team possesses a mobile air quality monitoring unit that can measure a wide range of air pollutants, including some that can cause offensive odours.

The team will lean on reports from the app to identify areas where these mobile measurements might be needed.

TransLink will not offer free transit on New Year's Eve this year

f you were planning on going out on New Year's Eve, TransLink won’t be helping you foot the transit bill.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the transportation agency says it won't offer free transit on New Year’s Eve this year.

With restrictions on social gatherings and events, TransLink believes it "would be inconsistent with provincial

public health orders to offer free transit for this traditional evening of celebration."

OPINION: Premier Horgan planned to gather with family for Christmas while we peasants follow the rules

EWS1130 dropped a bombshell late last week as they revealed that as of Thursday, Premier John Horgan had planned on enjoyying a nice Christmas dinner with mem mbers of his family who don't live with him,, and who would in fact be traveling from m another city to his home.

Or, that is, Horgan himself dropped the bom mbshell during a year-end interview with NEW WS1130.

Seem mingly oblivious to his own goveernment's order around not gathering with h anyone outside of your immediate houssehold, the premier boasted that he had plan nned to viisit with family members who were insid de his "bubble".

It wo ould seem that the people with the most sensse in the Horgan family married into it, ass the following day (Friday, Dec. 18) he sp poke again with reporter Liza Yuzda, explaining that his daughter-in-law has "a co oncern about rules", and that her being a "prrominent daughter-in-law", the famiily "decided collectively" that they'll "find anotther way to share this special

time of year."

Cheese and rice, man. That would be the same way everyone in this province - all of us peasants - have planned on celebrating; in our own homes, with no relatives who don't live outside of those homes. It feels like we've been told that's what we should be doing for weeks now, almost daily.

This apparent misunderstanding of the rules hearkens back to the time when Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart wanted people to do as he said, and not as he did, by gathering for summertime drinks with an oversized group on a restaurant patio.

Regardless of what the premier says he plans to do or not do, do not meet up with people who don't live in your immediate household over the holidays.

Unless you live alone, people living inside your home are currently the only ones permitted inside your bubble.

Romantic walk on beach turns intto lesson ab boutt internati tio onal borders

arlier this month a couple from B.C. went for a walk on a beach in South Delta and found themselves crossing international borders.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 5, according to a release from the Delta Police Department. An officer from the DPD was in the beach area of Boundary Bay in Tsawwassen near the Point Roberts border crossing when he saw the couple crossing into Canada without presenting themselves at a port of entry.

“Both parties were able to produce B.C. identification and stated they had gone for a romantic walk on the beach and did not realize they had crossed the border. They stated they thought the border was further down the beach, and were apologetic,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome.

As to how this is possible in the first place, signs in the area that could tell people they are about to cross an international border are few. There is however a giant cement block that barricades people from walking along the beach and into the United States. About a kilometre east and embedded into the Boundary Bay mudflats is a similar structure.

During low tide though, it would be possible to walk between the two cement blocks without noticing them, especially if you were enraptured in a romantic conversation.

Merry Christmas hockey fans, it’s the 2021 World Juniors

E

very other IIHF tournament has been cancelled, but the 2021 World Junior Championship lives on. For Canucks fans, it’s an opportunity to see two of the team’s pro ospects take centre stage: Russia’s Vasily Podkolzin and d Sweden’s Arvid Costmar.

the teenagers playing for their countries aren’t being paid, even as plenty of other parties profit off their performances. The opportunity to represent their country is a rare one, but is it ethical to take advantage of that patriotic zeal in the middle of a pandemic?

Both Podkolzin and Costmar have represented their cou untries in international tournaments since they were 15 years old, even if the two are at different tiers in the Canucks’ prospect pool. Podkolzin is the blue-chip win nger, a 10th-overall pick with the two-way ability to playy anywhere in an NHL lineup and the skill to be a legiitimate first-line forward.

Perhaps that’s too much to consider for hockey fans that are just desperate to see their favourite sport back on the ice. The tournament, televised on TSN, starts on Christmas Day, with Podkolzin in action against Team USA in a marquee matchup at 6:30 pm PST.

Co ostmar, on the other hand, is the longshot: a 7th h-round pick with a nice set of tools, including a deaadly shot, but with obvious flaws as well, from his inconsistent defensive play, lack of speed, and a som metimes passive approach to the game. When his gam me clicks, however, you see why the Canucks took a chaance on him.

Co ostmar could also find himself on the first line, as Sw weden’s top centre, Karl Henriksson, had to miss the tou urnament after a positive COVID-19 test didn’t give him m enough time to properly quarantine before leaving Sw weden for Canada. That could give Costmar a chance to play with Sweden’s best forwards, top-ten picks Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz, also known as thee “Terror Twins.”

If he gets to play with those two highly-skilled lineemates, this could be a coming out party for Co ostmar, who has been relatively under the radar while playying limited minutes for Linköping in the SHL. Forr Podkolzin, the stakes are a little higher. If he doeesn’t produce, Russia could be in trouble and it will raise questions about the young winger, who has stru uggled to put up points in the KHL as well.

As much as he clearly has the two-way game to play in thee NHL, does he have as much upside as scouts seeem to think?

Sw weden and Russia are perennial favourites in the tou urnament, so Canucks fans should have plenty of opp portunities to see if Podkolzin can put it all together and d Costmar can break out. It’s a marvelous Christmas preesent, though it comes wrapped in questions and con ncerns.

Mu ultiple teams had to leave players behind that testted positive for COVID-19, and they’ve had further possitive tests from players and staff after they arrived in Edmonton. The affected players and staff were quaarantined and their teams isolated, so theoretically thaat should be it for positive tests. The NHL managed to pull off the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs in a similar bub bble during the summer, so there’s precedent for maaking this work.
