'Scuba Claus' returns to the Vancouver Aquarium for virtual show

anta might be most at home in the snow that blankets the North Pole, but that doesn't mean the big guy can't enjoy a swim from time-to-time.

Santa Claus—or Scuba Claus, rather—is returning to the Vancouver Aquarium on Sunday, Dec. 20 for a virtual holiday show that will see Santa get up close and personal with some of the local Aquarium’s most beloved animals.

With holiday events and gatherings on hold in accordance with B.C.'s current COVID-19 health orders, the Aquarium's iconic holiday tradition is going virtual this year. That means kids of all ages will be able to help save Christmas by diving underwater alongside Scuba Claus in search of the missing key to Santa’s toy cupboard—without even having to leave their couch.

During the approximately 30-minute show, the at-home audience will visit with aquatic friends like the Vancouver Aquarium’s African penguins, a gentle sea lion, and Joey, the

famous rescued sea otter, to name just a few.

Those who tune in for the premiere, set to take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, will also be treated to a live chat with Vancouver Aquarium staff, as well as the chance to win some pretty sweet prizes from the Aquarium's Gift Shop.

This new virtual format of the Vancouver Aquarium’s beloved holiday show has been produced in collaboration with students and faculty of BCIT’s Television and Video Production Program, Aquarium staff explained in a news release. The students "generously volunteered their time and expertise to support the Aquarium and spread joy this holiday season," it reads.

Tickets to the virtual event cost $9.99 per household, with profits going toward the Vancouver Aquarium and its animals.

Metro Vancouver hairstylist rises to TikTok stardom during pandemic

hen the coronavirus pandemic struck, Abbotsford's Kris Collins found herself among the many Metro Vancouver residents who saw their lives flipped upside down.

She was working as a hairstylist and certified lash technician, operating out of her home.

"I had just been doing that, like, six, seven days a week for the longest time and then when COVID happened I had to close my doors," she recalls.

Like a lot of people who found themselves out of work in the pandemic's earliest days, with nowhere to go and no one to see, Collins "got really bored."

So, her 17-year-old brother convinced her to download TikTok. Rather than the endless stream of dance videos that she had expected to find on the video-sharing social network, the 24-year-old swiftly realized "that there are a lot of different corners of TikTok—there's comedy, DIY, anything," she explains.

"I watched it for like three days straight, no sleep, and then said 'I'm going to start making some videos—might as well, I have nothing else to do.'"

That was in April. Today, Collins is the second-most followed Canadian TikToker, according to SocialTracker, with a staggering 14 million-plus followers. She's uploaded over 860 videos under her @kallmekris handle that have collectively amassed 509.4 million likes, and counting. She's designed and released her own line of merchandise, and has begun partnering with brands.

Her success on TikTok has spilled over to Instagram and YouTube, where she now has over 650,000 followers and 162,000 subscribers, respectively.

Now several months into her meteoric rise to content creator stardom, Collins says she still can't fully wrap her head around the magnitude of those numbers. "It's bizarre," she says.

"I think I was at, like, 1000 [followers] when I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm a famous TikToker now, I guess," Collins jokes.

"Even when I hit like 100,000, or even 10,000, it's still like the same feeling, like 'How is this happening?' Same with 11 million—every time I hit a new milestone, I still don't understand, but I appreciate it."

From the beginning, Collins has easily won over followers with her hilariously relatable posts, but the style of content she produces has shifted alongside her follower count.

Braden Holtby apologizes for goalie mask accused of cultural appropriation

W

hen Braden Holtby signed with the Vancouver Canucks, he knew he needed new gear for the occasion and, most importantly, a new mask.

That meant turning to his long-time mask designer David Gunnarsson, who designs many masks for NHL players, including former Canucks Jacob Markstrom and Eddie Lack.

The new mask design from Holtby and Gunnarsson sparked controversy, however, when Gunnarsson posted the mask on his Instagram. It was clearly inspired, if not directly copied from, Indigenous art of the northwest, but the Swedish Gunnarsson is not Indigenous.

“I wanted to make sure I apologize to anyone I offended,” said Holtby in an interview with CTV News. “It was definitely not my intent and I definitely learned a valuable lesson through this all and will make sure I’m better moving forward.”

Holtby made it clear that he wanted to connect with his new home in Vancouver by incorporating Indigenous art into his mask.

“The goal was and still is to include Indigenous artist and try and pick their brain to see how they would design a mask to best represent the history and culture around this area especially because it’s so vast,” he said.

According to Gunnarsson, it was Holtby’s idea to use the Thunderbird, one of the most powerful spirits in Northwest

Indigenous myth. The Thunderbird is a common sight atop totem poles, such as the famous Thunderbird House Post totem pole in Stanley Park, a replica by carver Tony Hunt of the original

by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Charlie James. In fact, that appears to be the exact Thunderbird used by Gunnarsson in his design. “the issue is not that Holtby wants to use Indigenous art on his mask, but that it was not done by an Indigenous artist.”

In the case of the Thunderbird design, James's family has been clear in the past that they don't appreciate reproductions of his work without credit.

"My grandfather’s totem pole in Stanley Park is one of the most appropriated Indigenous designs anywhere," said Kwakwaka’wakw artist Lou-ann Neel to The Discourse in 2019. "With no acknowledgement that

that’s his work... It pains me to see some of the really poor reproductions of it. It’s just troubling to see that."

In his Instagram post, which has since been deleted, Gunnarsson related the tale of how the Thunderbird was big enough to snatch up killer whales from the ocean in its claws. One of those killer whales, or orcas, is depicted on the bottom of the mask below the cage.

The killer whale appears to be a replica of a piece of artwork by Doug Zilkie, a non-Indigenous artist that has been working n the Haida style for most in of his life. The piece is titled “Thunderbird and Whale.” The main difference, aside from the colours, is a change in the teeth to more closely match the style of the Canucks’ orca logo.

The mask immediately raised concerns of cultural appropriation from many on social media. Others dismissed the concerns, including some Indigenous people who were happy to see Indigenous art taking such a prominent place in the world of hockey.

According to Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun, a Coast Salish artist and storyteller from the Snuneymuxw First Nation, the issue is not that Holtby wants to use Indigenous art on his mask, but that it was not done by an Indigenous artist.

“The appropriation of Indigenous art is harmful,” said WhiteHill. “For me as a Coast Salish person it is significant that Coast Salish art and Coast Salish artists are represented within our territories. I think of the potential for respect and representation to be shown and how much it would mean to see that done in a meaningful way, and what that would mean for future generations seeing themselves represented.

“So it makes it very frustrating when there are opportunities and interest for respecting and holding up Indigenous cultures and art and instead of doing that and going to the source, the choice is made not to and instead to use methods that are appropriative.”

Premier Horgan says he'd get COVID vaccine early to reassure public

"It varies in parts of the province, but that tells us that people are recognizing this is important. That’s different to what we see in the United States, for example, where the attention to the science behind what is going may be different from what we see here in Canada.

"I am confident that particularly health-care workers, who recognize how severe this virus has been affecting themselves and colleagues, or the people they care for that have passed away. I know that there are a lot of people that are ready and willing to get this vaccine – we know and I am confident it is a safe and effective vaccine. I believe we will get there very quickly."

Horgan was asked if B.C. celebrities like Ryan Reynolds or Seth Rogen might be enlisted to encourage vaccinations.

"I think Ryan and Seth are in a demographic that would not require it," said Horgan.

"As with Dr. Henry, I am prepared if it's in the interest of giving the public comfort about the safety of the vaccine – I am happy to take one if it reassures people prepared to take one.

"My son advised me I am old enough to get into the line. I did not appreciate that very much - but that is the reality. I am prepared to do whatever is in the best interest of advancing the cause of getting as many people immunized as possible.

"I do not want to queue jump, I do not want to elbow people out of the way to be at a microphone or a photo op."

remier John Horgan says he is willing to take the COVID-19 vaccine early if it bolsters public confidence in the science behind it.

He said it's not about mic time or press moments, but if the act would bring confidence to British Columbians, he and Dr. Bonnie Henry would not hesitate in receiving the vaccine earlier than their age and demographic is set to receive it.

Henry, provincial health officer for the province, said she thinks British Columbia will reach a vaccination rate of 70 to 80 percent “very quickly.”

On the question of anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists, Henry said: "There are a small number of loud voices that we hear a lot of.

When we do polls and research and studies done by BC CDC and Women’s Health Research Centre and Vaccine Evaluation Centre (here in BC) that just finished last week. It showed that 86 per cent of people in B.C. are looking and intend to receive the vaccine.

Filmmakers find hope on the Downtown Eastside Megaphone Magazine featuring Christmas wrapping in new documentary

ancouver filmmakers Sean Patrick Shaul and Kayvon Saremi admit they were a little reluctant to get involved in a second project with Uwe Boll, the controversial filmmaker behind films like Alone in the Dark and the Rampage series.

Boll himself was the subject of a documentary the pair released in 2018, called F*ck You All: The Uwe Boll Story. The film centred "on what an intense, kind of crazy dude he is," explains Shaul with a laugh.

Shaul, Saremi and Boll were at a showing of that film in Edmonton, talking about potential next projects when Boll came up with an idea for the pair to shine a spotlight on Vancouver's troubled Downtown Eastside (DTES).

"As a former restaurant owner in Gastown—h he had a restaurant called Bahaus—he was seeing it every single day," tells Saremi.

That film turned into The Decline, a new documentary co-directed by Shaul and Saremi and produced by Boll, that premiered Sunday, Dec. 13 as part of the Whistler Film Festival. The festival has gone virtual amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, with all films available for streaming across Canada until the end of December.

"We were a little hesitant to get into this subject matter with him," tells Shaul, "But after speaking with him

and realizing that he and his wife have done a lot of work for the Downtown Eastside, and that his heart was in the right place, we embarked on it."

Says Shaul, "Just from living in the city for so long and seeing the city change, it obviously is a topic that's on everyone's mind—every Vancouverite's.

We were presented with the opportunity of making the film, and dove in, excited to learn a bit ourselves and get the story out there."

According to the BC Coroners Service, the number of overdose deaths in B.C. reached 1,386 between January and October of this year. It's the lethal amounts of fentanyl that continue to show up in street drugs across the province that's leading to the sky kyrocketing y numbers of overdoses, the filmmakers explain in the documentary.

Filming for the project began in August 2019, and wrapped up at the beginning of 2020. The Decline's directors interviewed a wide array of subjects for the film, ranging from drug users to activists to officials, in an effort to gain insight into the opioid crisis ravaging the city tyy and what can be done to stop it. It also examines some strategies employed by other countries—like Portugal, for

instance—that have found success in decriminalizing some substances.

The film attempts to find a way through the ongoing issues plaguing the East Vancouver neighbourhood, but doesn't spell out one be-all, end-all solution.

"We're just asking more questions," says Shaul. "Not that I thought we'd solve the whole problem."

If there's one element that Shaul hopes viiewers takke with h th hem affter watch hing it, it would be "a further understanding into addiction and what it's like to live like that, and whatt can be done to, hopefully, solve what seeems like an unsolvable problem," he says.

The Decline iss part of the virtual Whistler Film m Festival, and is available for viewing forr anyone in Canada until Dec. 31. Once a film is ordered, viewers will have 24 ho ours to finish watching it.

his holiday season Vancouverites have the opportunity to support low-income workers and at the same time cover their gifts in coastal-themed wrapping paper.

Megaphone, a non-profit monthly magazine that operates in Vancouver and Victoria, is behind the festive initiative. Megaphone is distributed by 175 low-income vendors; the vendors buy each magazine for 75 cents and sell it for $2, keeping the profit.

In its December issue, Megaphone is highlighting nine of its vendors with their portraits and stories. Also in the pages of the magazine will be two vendor-designed sheets of wrapping paper, both inspired by the west coast.

Stephen Scott is one of those vendors. Scott came to Vancouver in 1994 looking for a fresh start after surviving two lifethreatening accidents and a major health scare.

Driver slapped with $368 fine for streaming football

BC RCMP Traffic Services says fatal and serious injury motor vehicle collisions due to distracted driving are completely preventable.

According to provincial data, people driving while distracted are responsible for more than 25 per cent of all car crash fatalities and are the second leading cause of fatal collisions in B.C. Every year, an average of 76 people die in fatal motor vehicle collisions in BC because the driver was distracted or not paying attention.

Distracted driving is more than electronic devices being used; other reasons for the citation include personal grooming, eating/ drinking, reading, pets, other passengers, and not knowing your route.

ancouver Police slapped a distracted driver with a hefty fine for streaming a football game while behind the wheel.

VPD Sgt. Mark Christensen took to Twitter last week to report that he'd stopped a driver on Cambie St. Thursday night for distracted driving. He says the driver was "streaming the football game on his car's dash cam screen" and will be fined $368 for the offence.

ancouver is now ranked as the worst place in the world for luxury homebuyers seeking a return on their investment, according to a global survey of 43 “prime residential” cities.

The Knight Frank Prime International Residential Index found that, while luxury property prices globally were up an average of 4.2% in the third quarter, compared with the same period in 2017, they fell 11.2% in Vancouver, where luxury home sales have tanked.

Singapore ranked No. 1 in the index, posting a 13.1% annual increase in the third quarter, according to Knight Frank. Madrid came in at No. 2 with a 10.2% increase in values, followed

by Tokyo, where luxury home prices were up 9.4% from a year earlier.

In North America, Los Angeles carried the flag.

It posted a 7.8% rise in luxury property values.

No other Canadian city made the list, and Vancouver ended up ranked No. 43, just behind Istanbul, where luxury home sellers suffered a 2.4% drop in value since 2017’s third quarter.

Vancouver’s high-end detached-house market is forecast to decline further, according to a recent Royal LePage survey, which laid the blame on government intervention.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions’ introduction of the new mortgage stress test in January created market turmoil as buyers moved to the sidelines, the agency stated.

“More significantly, in British Columbia, the 2018 provincial budget included policies targeting foreign and domestic buyers who do not pay tax in the province, as well as a tax increase for all homes over $3 million through increases to the property transfer and school tax,” noted Royal LePage president and CEO Phil Soper.

During 2018’s first quarter, sales of detached luxury homes in Greater Vancouver plunged 38.2% compared with the same period in 2017, while luxury condominium sales decreased 26.5%, according to the Royal LePage survey.

In the third quarter, 162 detached houses were listed for sale in the city of Vancouver through the Multiple Listing Service at $5 million or more. Only 14 sold.

The agency is forecasting that, by the first quarter of 2019, the median price of a luxury detached house in Greater Vancouver will fall a further 3% compared with the first quarter of 2018, to $5.51 million.

However, luxury condominium prices are forecast to increase 2% to $2.5 million in the same period.

Royal LePage suggests that demand for luxury condos among millennials and downsizing baby boomers acts to “insulate condominiums from the price declines we are seeing in the luxury detached-home market.”

rovincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said she’s regularly inundated with hundreds of emails, each usually boiling down to some version of “What about my specific situation?”

And with Christmas around the corner, many are looking for guidance on whether their lives fall into the category of legitimate loophole or bad excuse.

“What I tell people is, look at the intent of this. The intent of this is to reduce those transmissions that we can have when we get together when we have social interactions,” said Henry Thursday.

“So the bottom line is as much as possible to stick with our household. If your household regularly includes your grandparents as part of caring for children, then you can make that decision about that risk to you and to your grandparents, in particular.”

What health officials don’t want, said Henry, are large numbers of people coming together. That means no dinners with you, your sisters, brothers and their children.

However, if a single person or a widower is looking to ward off loneliness, pick one child and their household unit to visit, said B.C.’s top doctor.

Or as Health Minister Adrian Dix put it, “This is a crucial moment. If there’s any doubt, err on the side of keeping your loved ones safe.”

One person who will continue to jump from house to house over the holidays: Santa Claus.

“He’s going to be very very careful,” said Henry. “He’s going to be wearing masks when he’s in houses, and he’s going to be cleaning his hands a lot, and the reindeer are going to be very careful as well.

“So no leaving out the cookies and milk this year, let’s just be happy he can make it around the world.”

ritish Columbia's Public Safety Ministry is warning that the risk of fire could be hidden beneath the sparkle of holiday decorations.

It says the Office of the Fire Commissioner has reported 113 Christmas-related fires in B.C. in the past decade, leading to multiple injuries, four deaths and more than $14.5 million in damage.

Jennifer Rice, the parliamentary secretary of Emergency Preparedness, says the office has also had reports of wreaths and boughs catching fire due to candles or improperly used lights.

She says that in one case, a person trying to burn their Christmas tree indoors caused a chimney fire.

Rice says everyone can reduce their risk of fire

by keeping trees, wrapping paper, decorations, and other material that can catch fire away from heat sources.

Real trees should be watered every day so they stay fresh, and flame-retardant or noncombustible decorations should be used, along with lights that have been tested and labelled by a certified testing laboratory.

music video featuring 101 Vancouver residents is making its rounds online with the music speaking to those who have struggled with Vancouver’s tumultuous housing market.

Vancouver-based songwriter Corbin Murdoch released ‘The Best Place I Ever Lived’ on Dec. 4. The song is the lead single off his new album, Blind Contour, which arrives early in 2021. The album will be Murdoch’s first new music in over six years.

The video, shot and edited by Murdoch and videographer Sam Tudor, presents a broad tapestry of people from all walks of life standing outside their Vancouver homes.

The Vancouverites are seen alone, or with

roommates or family, as Murdoch sings over a mix of his guitar playing, a dobro played

by Tim Tweedale and drumming by Barry Mirochnick.

The song stems from Murdoch's experience living in the city all his life but sometimes feeling like he doesn’t belong.

“Precarity and displacement take an emotional toll,” Murdoch said. “I wanted to write about the experience of living through that.”

Through the filming of the video he spoke - socially distanced - with many of its participants. In an interview with Vancouver Is Awesome he reflected on the conversations he had with them about the song’s theme.

"I think it's something that all Vancouverites have reckoned with in one way or another,” he said adding that he believes everyone knows

someone who has moved away or gotten evicted from the places they love to live in.

To Murdoch, the song is meant to put a common experience into verse so people can recognize themselves and recognize their own struggle with affordability.

"When I was thinking about a concept I wanted to really focus on what makes this city great," he said. "While it's about the struggles we face I also wanted it to be a sort of reaffirmation of what a city ultimately is and that's its people."
