Covidiot arrested for breaking Quarantine Act after returning from ‘flat earth’ convention in the USA

A

Metro Vancouver man has been charged under the Quarantine Act after refusing to self-isolate upon his return from a flat Earth conference in the United States.

Mak Singh Parhar, 47, has been charged with three counts of contravening a section of the Quarantine Act, which requires him to self-isolate for 14 days upon reentry into Canada. Parhar attended Flatoberfest 2020 on Oct. 24 in Greenville, South Carolina, an event for people who believe the Earth is flat.

In a post on his personal Facebook page, Parhar shares an image of himself "hanging out with two out of the three pioneers of [flat earth] activism" and adds that the duo inspired him to "start handing out red pills"—a reference to the 1999 film The Matrix.

hat’s a small body, gentlemen, that’s a small body.”

That was Brian Burke’s assessment of Quinn Hughes after the Canucks drafted him 7th overall in 2018, after a long soliloquy about why taking a college player in the draft is a risk because they can just wait four years and sign with whatever team they want. As it turned out, neither of Burke’s concerns were well-founded.

Hughes signed with the Canucks just a year after he was drafted and immediately went about proving that his size wouldn’t prevent him from thriving in the NHL. His 53 points led all rookies in scoring, something a defenceman hadn’t done since Brian Leetch and Bobby Orr, and he was on-pace for several franchise records before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the regular season.

When the playoffs came around, he did set one major NHL record: his 16 points in the playoffs is the most by a rookie defenceman in NHL history.

Beyond the points and the accolades, Hughes is a gamechanger on the back end for the Canucks, completely changing the way they play every time he steps on the ice. His elusiveness with the puck, speed on his skates, and pinpoint passing make him a one-man breakout.

The question is, what’s next for the smooth-skating sensation?

He was a revelation in the regular season and a breakout star in the playoffs — what can he do for an encore?

Typically, when you want to get an idea for what a player might do in the future, you look for how comparable players have performed in the past. The problem for Hughes is that he doesn’t have many comparables.

You have to go back to the 80s to find the most recent defenceman with a better points-per-game at the age of 20.

That would be the aforementioned Leetch, but you also find

all-time greats like Paul Coffey, Phil Housley, Paul Reinhart, and Al MacInnis. It’s hard to compare them directly with Hughes, however, as they played in a different, higherscoring era.

That’s ultimately to his credit: the fact that you have to go back to the high-flying 80’s to find players comparable to Hughes is pretty incredible.

One way we can compare Hughes to players from the past is to use era-adjusted points from HockeyReference.com. By adjusting based on the number of goals scored per game in different eras of the NHL, era-adjusted points allow comparing players across generations.

When adjusting for era, four players comparable to Hughes show up: Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch, and, more recently, Drew Doughty. That’s quite the crew of comparables.

What did each of them do at 21? Two of them erupted: Coffey went from 89 to 96 points and the season after that scored a ridiculous 136 points; Orr jumped from 64 points at 20 to 120 points at 21.

On the other hand, Leetch dropped from 71 to 56 points, while Doughty likewise regressed with just 40 points in his 21-year-old season.

That gives us a massive range of expectations for Hughes next season. Even adjusting for era and tossing out Orr’s

absurdity, that’ that s a range of 43 to 77 points. Weirdly, that seems about right. While Hughes could flirt with a point per game if everything goes right, it’s also entirely possible that Hughes suffers a setback in his sophomore season and “only” puts up around 40 points.

What’s key to note here is what Leetch and Doughty did next: they won Norris Trophies and Stanley Cups. At 22, Doughty led the Los Angeles Kings to their first Cup, then did it again at 24. Leetch won his first Norris as the league’s best defenceman at 24, then won the Conn Smythe as the most valuable player in the 1994 playoffs just after turning 26.

Canucks fans can only hope that Quinn Hughes and his “small body” can accomplish as much in the next 5-6 years.

n East Vancouver artist says it came as no surprise that a small and weathered house landed on her street overnight.

It coincided with the overthrow of U.S. President Donald Trump, who lost his bid for a return to the White House this past weekend.

Artist June Hunter captured the sight near the intersection of Kaslo and Parker, calling it “the most spectacular piece of dumping we’ve ever seen.”

After 30 years in the neighbourhood, the extent of what’s been dumped in the cover of the night has mostly been household items like mattresses and couches – but never a house itself.

The tiny home, which laid flipped over on its roof, has piano parts and foliage pouring out of its sides.

“It’s flipped on its back as looks as if it was pushed off a truck,” Hunter described.

Her husband Phillip called the City of Vancouver a few days ago to report it.

This amendment will still require that existing rental housing be replaced on a one-for-one basis in the same area to ensure no net loss of rental housing.

“Vancouver Podcast Festival (at home) may look a little different, but we’re excited to continue showcasing the best storytellers and audio producers from around Vancouver, Canada, and the globe,” said Hannah McGregor, one of the festival's programming committee members, in a release.

“Our pared down online programming has a little bit

of something for everyone, whether you’re a brand new podcaster looking to pitch your ideas, a producer trying to put together a great show despite social distancing, or a fan excited to see your favourite podcasters live.”

Some highlights from the festival's schedule include Michelle Shephard of the Brainwashed podcast in conversation with CBC's Ian Hanomansing, as well as live recordings of Sandy & Nora Talk Politics and Pop Chat. Attendees can also take part in a workshop dubbed "How to Monetize Your Podcast," and observe a Producer's Roundtable where a group of highlevel producers will talk about the challenges of producing podcasts virtually, sharing tips about how to produce a studio-quality podcast from home.

Among participating podcasters are Elamin Abdelmahmoud (Pop Chat, Party Lines, Party in the USA), Andréa Schmidt (Canadaland), Lauren Bercovitch and Chris Kelly (This

t is always interesting to come across photographs in the City of Vancouver Archives that show brighter moments during the somber World War I time period.

This portrait, taken around 1915, showing two men in their military uniform grinning broadly as they attempt to balance rambunctious kittens on their shoulders, is one such moment.

Noel Robinson, left, was a member of the 9th Field Company of Canadian Engineers. By profession, however, he was a journalist who emigrated from England to Vancouver around 1908. He started working for the Vancouver News-Advertiser as a marine reporter, eventually moving to the Vancouver Daily World, where he wrote a daily column called “The World’s Window”. In addition to writing for newspapers, he wrote a number of books, most notably, the biography of Walter Moberly, which he co-authored with the subject.

Robinson was active in his community, serving as president for a number of societies, including the Art, Historical and Scientific Society, and was a founding member of the BC Division of the Canadian Authors Association and the Vancouver Poetry Society.

In a letter of support written by fellow journalist and neighbour Philip W Luce for Robinson’s nomination for the Good Citizen Award, he praised Robinson’s acting abilities in addition to his writing in the annual production of Twelfth Night Revels of the New Westminster Fellowship of Arts. Robinson was lauded by other friends as a brilliant conversationalist, and a caring individual who would visit veterans at the Shaughnessy Hospital on a weekly basis.

Vancouver city council directs staff to consider future Olympic Games bid

ity council voted 7-4 last Wednesday to direct staff to conduct preliminary work on the feasibility of hosting another Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver and to report back with findings before the end of next April.

The request was led by Coun. Melissa De Genova, who said she has received emails and phone calls from residents who wanted to speak to her motion and want to give their opinions on another possible bid for the winter events.

“Let speakers come out on either side — support or against — to help inform us of what they want, and to see where things will be at in a few months with the pandemic and what our [economic] recovery looks like,” she told council.

De Genova’s motion was supported by Mayor Kennedy Stewart and councillors Rebecca Bligh, Michael Wiebe, Adriane Carr, Lisa Dominato, and Sarah Kirby-Yung, who took a similar stance to De Genova on the need for a staff report and hearing from residents.

“If there are pitfalls, then let’s have good conversations about what those might be and have an informed dialogue about it,” said Kirby-Yung, emphasizing the need to explore leveraging social and low-income housing and ways to continue building relationships with the four host nations of the 2010 Olympic Games.

Swanson argued that the 2010 Olympics and Expo 86 contributed to an increase in property values in Vancouver, which in turn contributed to an affordable housing crisis.

“In the Downtown Eastside, everybody pretty much understands that had we spent money on ending poverty and homelessness that we spent on the Olympics, that we could have done that,” she said.

“I’m actually very uncomfortable with the idea of promoting something during a climate emergency that involves a bunch of flying around in airplanes all over the world. So I think there’s lots of reasons that we should just stop this idea right now.”

Fry noted he lives in Strathcona, a few blocks from the homeless camp in Strathcona Park and not far from the RayCam and Strathcona community centres, which serve some of the most vulnerable children in the province.

He described the community centres as “under-resourced and threadbare,” saying opportunities to improve conditions for the city’s most vulnerable were squandered during the 2010 Games.

“I’m not comfortable referring this motion for staff to do the work because I’m worried the work we’re sending staff to consider and contemplate on this is not grounded in equity and the betterment of all Vancouverites,” he said.

Boyle said she appreciated the interest in hearing from the public about hosting another Olympics, but didn’t think it was an issue that should be explored at this point. Hardwick didn’t state her reasons for opposing De Genova’s motion.

The previous bid for the Olympics came after 86,113 people voted in a plebiscite in February 2003 to back the Games; 48,651 people opposed the bid. At the crux of the “no” side was the argument money spent on the Olympics would be better funneled into health care, education and housing.

De Genova pointed to the construction of the Canada Line, the Convention Centre, the Olympic Village development, the Hillcrest community centre, the addition of public art (large bird sculp ptures at Olyymp pic Villag ge) and the creation of jobs as benefits of the 2010 Olympics.

But in her closing remarks, she said she shared concerns raised by Swanson and Fry related to homelessness and poverty ty. y ”I welcome all voices here, especially to the most vulnerable vu u and marginalized in our community ty,” y DeGenova said. “If we can’t leverage something big — if we’re talking about infrastructure [such as housing] — if we can’t do that for them, then why would we do this?”

7 farmers markets you'll find in Metro Vancouver this fall and winter

all is here, and while our warm-weather farmers' markets in Metro Vancouver have mostly wrapped up for the season, there are some that are carrying on into November, and others that will run through to spring.

There are a few changes in the typical winter line-up for 2020-2021. While the Vancouver Farmers' Market will still operate its two regular wintertime markets, other markets— like those in Burnaby and New Westminster—are opting out of a winter season this year. Meanwhile, the popular Cannery market in Richmond's Steveston Village has ended its run completely, after six years.

Due to COVID-19, farmers' markets in Metro Vancouver will continue to operate differently. Expect to find restrictions on eating on-site, as well as requirements for safe physical distancing and other enhanced safety measures. Take note that some, like the New West market, offer shopping times restricted to certain members of the population, such as seniors.

New Kerrisdale restaurant to offer 'French based fusion cuisine with a magic Asian touch'

former coffee shop in Kerrisdale is being transformed into an upscale French-Asian restaurant, aiming to open soon.

Called Jess', the restaurant at 2179 West 41st Avenue (previously Bean Brothers) is a bold venture for owners who hope to replicate their model as a franchise.

Renovations have been underway for several weeks at the address.

"Modern elegant upscale interior design along with the best quality foods will guarantee our restaurant to be one of the hottest places in the lower mainland pretty soon," pledges the restaurant in job listings.

When it comes to food, Jess' promises "Frenchbased fusion cuisine with a magic Asian touch."

Though specifics about the menu aren't yet available, Jess' says Chef Brian Jang will be at the stoves, with his expertise in French, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese food.

The Pacific National Exhibition will be transformed into a glistening winter wonderland this holiday season with a magical, family-friendly drive-through experience called WinterLights - A Magical Journey to Santa.

Guests will enjoy the elaborate displays from the warmth of their car as they travel along a 2-kilometre route. They'll journey through nine enchanted lands filled with glowing lights in their mission to discover Santa, with special characters and festive performers to help them along their way.

"The Merry & Bright Forest will be lit up in dazzling colours with the musical sounds of your favourite Christmas songs so you can join in on the CAROL-oke," explains the PNE. "In Polar North, you’ll feel the chill of the iceberg cave, igloos, polar bears, seals and penguins. The Teddy Bear Brigade will bring Dreamland to life along with a magical Pegasus and Unicorn."

After that, guests will discover a 50-foot purple Christmas tree that leads them to Santa and his dancing elves in Candy Cane Lane.

and offer the following guidelines for a safe experience: 1. Purchase tickets online, in advance.

2. To comply with provincial health guidelines, please only travel to the event with your family/household unit, and remain in your vehicle.

Mayor calling out provincial government in public doesn’t help solve critical social issues

L

ast week Vancouver City Council received a presentation from staff on the 2021 Budget.

During the time period allocated for Council questions, Mayor Kennedy Stewart came out blasting the Province of B.C., advising he was “gobsmacked” by the news that only $16 million in federal COVID-19 restart funding had been allocated to Vancouver, since he was hoping for $40-60 million.

Mayor Stewart continued firing on all cylinders, issuing statements and doing interviews saying he felt shafted, while provincial reps said the money was distributed as intended with a base amount to every municipality and then an allowance on a per capita basis, and that allocations recognized the investment in transit shortfalls the Province had to make since large B.C. municipalities don’t directly fund transit like in other provinces.

Meanwhile, other Lower Mainland mayors – including Surrey’s Doug McCallum and Burnaby’s Mike Hurley – expressed their gratitude for the funding to help alleviate losses and costs incurred by cities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current reality isn’t easy.

Revenues are projected to be down for 2021 and there is uncertainty about

the depth and length of the recovery period. The 2021 Vancouver Budget Outlook presented by staff clearly showed the city plan to fill its revenue gap through the use of reserve funds.

Receiving relief funding was never budgeted or planned for as part of the recalibration plan, but it will help improve the outlook for next year.

Regardless of the mayor’s aspiration for a bigger bailout, the bottom line is that Vancouver has work to do to keep operational spending in line with the new reality, and to hold off on non-priority capital projects. We’re in a different state of normal and we need to adapt and get our own house in order.

Vancouver is facing more than a pandemic crisis.

We have an opioid crisis that has taken more lives than COVID-19.

A homelessness crisis that isn’t getting better.

And a mental health and addictions crisis with a huge gap in desperately needed treatment services to get people the help they need to move them forward.

It’s clear the current paradigm isn’t working and major change and major investment is needed.

These critical social issues all have a much deeper and devastating impact

The creation of a series of greener lanes is also not without a global precedent. There is a movement in London to make it a National Park.

The founders of the movement are not worrying about saving nature.

The motivation is to humanize cities through greater exposure to nature.

There are health and mental health and even documented learning benefits for children when people are more exposed to nature.

The benefits of treating the lanes both as they are designed now as important service corridors for emergency services but adding through minor changes making them more hospitable and greener are significant. The most important one will be a contribution to mental health. For those that are at home, work at home or may stay

working at home being able to look at or walk through trees, plants and shrubs close to home provides comfort.

The extra greenery will also reduce temperatures in the summer, noise reduction, provide habitat and food for birds and purify to some extent the air. All it might take to start is for every commercial and residential building to review whether additional outside areas can be planted. This might require the removal of concrete and asphalt but the benefits of that are well documented and are the origin of the Depave movement in Portland.

In some cases, the rationale of making the lanes one way should be considered. The ends of the lanes should be better marked for drivers and pedestrians' safety.

It may also be that a 200 sided matrix cube of economic interests and freedom of the market prevents this final suggestion. Is there a need to have five or six different waste collection companies per lane? A consolidation of collection to one or two companies per lane would reduce noise, traffic and air pollution in the lane and the whole city. If managed properly it would also increase the profitability of collection for the waste management firms. Most of us are tired of the constant beeping of trucks backing up.

The world will need more community and social cohesion as it returns from a world of living at home with Netflix.

Vancouver can start that process by making the lanes the first step in restoring neighbourhoods.
