Bat Week in B.C. uncovers tequila connection

at Week in B.C. is on the horizon and, while you’re unlikely see a caped crusader leaping off buildings, conservationists are hoping people will learn more about the flying mouse.

For starters, did you know that bats help pollinate the agave plant that’s used to make tequila – yes, you read that correctly.

International Bat Week (Oct. 24 to 31) is all about appreciating these animals and their benefits.

Often feared due to misconception and myths, bats are given a bad rap and Bat Week aims to shed a more positive light on the insect-eating creature.

“Bats in B.C. help control agricultural and forest pests, as well as mosquitoes in our yards - but now bats need our help” said Danielle Dagenais, regional coordinator for the BC Community Bat Program, Metro VancouverSquamish area.

“The conservation of bats in B.C. has always been important, since over half the species in this province are considered at risk.

“With the continuing spread of white-nose syndrome in Washington State, bat conservation is more important than ever as we expect to see impacts in B.C. in the near future.”

Bats, according to the BC Community Bat Program, play key roles in our environment and provide many benefits to humanity.

Their behaviour and adaptations help with: • Development of technology: radar, sonar, ultrasound

• Medical advancements: blood clot medication, lowtemperature surgery • Pest control: one bat can eat over 1000 insects in a night • Pollination: bats pollinate over 500 plants worldwide • Nutrient cycling: bat guano makes a great fertilizer • Food securities: bats spread seeds of over 300 fruits worldwide Find out what you can do locally for bats, at www.batweek. org, or through the BC Community Bat Program at www. bcbats.ca.

There are many ways you can participate and support bats: host an educational event, help restore a wetland, garden for bats, learn about bat-friendly lighting, or prepare your bat box for next spring.

Bat Week is also the time to say ‘so long’ to bats in our neighbourhoods, until the return of insects with the warmer weather in spring.

As insect-eaters, B.C. bats must leave their summer roost sites and migrate or hibernate to survive the winter.

This absence means that this is the time of year to do home renovations that you have delayed due to bat presence.

You can clean out and repair a bat box, or do bat-friendly exclusion work, without disturbing or injuring bats.

If you do see a bat in winter, you are asked to report it.

Community Bat Programs are requesting reports of dead bats or sightings of winter bat activity starting just after Bat Week, on Nov. 1 at www.bcbats.ca, vancouver@bcbats.ca, or 1-855-922-2287 ext. 11.

Virtanen also wants more — more money, that is. The 24-year-old winger has rejected his qualifying offer and has filed for playerelected salary arbitration.

In arbitration, the two sides present their cases to a neutral arbitrator, who decides on a fair salary for the player. Most players that file for arbitration never get that far, signing a contract before their case ever reaches an arbitrator, and for good reason: arbitration typically results in a player-friendly contract and teams can’t walk away from the decision if it’s under $4.539 million.

Benning wants more out of his first ever draft pick as a general manager.

He didn’t mince words when discussing how Virtanen played after the Canucks were eliminated from the postseason.

“I was expecting more from Jake in the playoffs,” he said. “We’ve been patient with him in his development, but he’s a guy I was expecting to produce more for us.”

That’s an expectation that was shared by a lot of Canucks fans. With his straightforward game — speed, size, and getting the puck to the net from any angle — Virtanen seemed like the type of blunt object required in the

But the pair were lucky.

Turner says it took him three minutes to locate the ring using a metal detector.

The ring was found buried in a clump of grass near to where Cryer had searched on Saturday.

"This one surprised me. The odds of that ring making it to the grass, not only the grass, the deepest part of the grass ... I was just astonished. I was like 'the gods are on his side for sure'," he said.

Cryer said he's stunned at how quickly the ring was found.

"I’m still beside myself," he wrote on Twitter.

n actor is sharing his gratitude towards a Vancouver service specializing in finding lost rings after losing his own wedding band, kicking off a panicked search attempt.

Jon Cryer, known for his role in the television series Two and a Half Men, was walking along Vancouver's seawall to meet up with castmates, on Friday when he lost his wedding ring.

"I pulled my hand out of my pocket and heard a 'ping!' To my left. I walked a couple more steps and realized my wedding ring was gone...," he wrote on Twitter.

Cryer said he frantically searched for the missing wedding band but rain and a lack of working lamp posts hindered his efforts.

Losing the ring was especially hard, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions restricting him from seeing his wife regularly while filming in Vancouver, he wrote.

He returned Saturday to search through a muddy section of grass he believed the ring could be in, but didn't have any luck.

Cryer turned to a company called the Ring Finders, that specialize in searching for rings and other lost valuables, to help him in his quest.

"In my mind, I'm thinking 'there's a 95 per cent chance it was probably dropped where someone could've seen it'," said Chris Turner, who founded the company in 2009.

he British Columbia Green party says October has been the best fundraising month in its history.

A statement from the party says more than $441,000 has been raised in the first 15 days of October.

That beats the previous record of just over $339,000, set in April 2017 before the last election.

The party also says donors have already contributed more during the current election period than was raised throughout the entire 28-day campaign three years ago.

It says $100,000 of the donations has come in since last Tuesday, when Green Leader Sonia Furstenau took part in the televised leaders debate.

The Greens say a wave of new supporters has arrived, as more than 43 per cent of donors report making their first contribution since Furstenau was elected leader last month.

Nothing ever came of the threat, but Campbell did manage to make some political hay out of the drama.

The following day, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act in response to the crisis in Quebec. That gave sweeping powers to police all over Canada to arrest without warrant and detain without charge anyone they perceived to have a connection with the FLQ. Tom Campbell seized the moment and promised to use the emergency powers to purge the city of hippies and draft dodgers.

"I would suggest that the draft dodgers had better start dodging -- get out of here, boy, because we're going to pick you up,” Campbell told reporters.

A couple of weeks later, seven members of the Vancouver Liberation Front, a fringe group sympathetic to the FLQ, were arrested and detained. Their crime?

Distributing copies of the FLQ manifesto around Vancouver.

After the tragic death of Pierre Laporte at the hands of his abductors, and the release of James Cross, the War Measures Act would be lifted and life in Canada would go back to normal.

But it was all just a warmup for Tom Campbell. He was less than a year away from his most famous showdown as mayor: the Gastown Riot of 1971.

or Vancouverrites basking in the heady twiligh ht of the hippie era, the October Crissis, and the seven-year bombing cam mpaign that led up to it, must have felt like faaraway problems. But on October 15, 1970 0, Vancouver mayor, Tom “Terrific” Cam mpbell, found himself and his family caugh ht up in the drama.

The October Crisiss was the climax of a campaign of esccalating political violence by the Fron nt de Liberation du Quebec (FLQ). Up p until then, the group had mostly used tim me bombs to make its mark. But on Occtober 5th, 1970 an FLQ cell abducted the British Trade Commissioner, Jam mes Cross. Five days later, another cell kiidnapped Quebec’s deputy premier, Pieerre Laporte.

No wonder it felt likke the traditions of peace, order, and go ood government were in peril. But to the rest r of Canada, it still seemed like a probleem for Quebeckers to sort out among themselves.

But then a sinister rripple of the crisis r eached Lotusland.

Self-described supp porters of the FLQ threatened to kidnaap the mayor of Vancouver. Police im mmediately assigned Campbell two bodyyguards and placed him under tight surveillance.

For Campbell, who o always had a flair for the dramatic and d never missed an opportunity to squaare off against anyone with even a whiff off patchouli about them, this was a chaance to indulge in a bit of melodrama. Wheen a CBC reporter asked him about thee veracity of the threat, the mayor looked in nto the camera and responded defiantlyy, “I don’t know what it is, but I’ve left insttructions, that in case they are successful, there is no deal. I’ll take my chances.”

In other words, don n’t bargain with the life of Tom Terrific. Hee’ll take one for the team if it comes to that.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino, was the first to announce the change to federal travel restrictions.

“Starting in late October, international students attending a designated learning institution that has been identified by their provincial or territorial government as having a COVID-19 readiness plan will also be able to enter Canada,” he posted to Twitter.

This includes learning institutions assisting their international students in quarantine by providing food or medication as needed.

City approves motion to support end of 'no pets' policy in rental contracts

L

ast week, Vancouver City Council voted unanimously to encourage the B.C. Government to end the "no pets" policy in rental contracts.

In a Tweet, Mayor Kennedy Stewart voiced his support for the decision, stating that "More than ever, pets are critical to so many renters' mental health & well being."

He also shared a picture of his pooch, Fergus. He quipped, "Fergus may be sleeping, but he approves too!"

The motion, submitted by Councillors Jean Swanson and Pete Fry on behalf of the Renters Advisory Committee, calls for the prohibition of the "no pets" clause in rental contracts.

It points out that British Columbians have been encouraged to stay home and practice physical distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that doing so is particularly difficult for seniors, under-housed individuals, and those who live alone.

Pets have helped ease feelings of isolation during this unprecedented time, but they have also been shown to have a positive impact on mental health regardless of the circumstance.

"COVID-19 has exacerbated an already existing problem: the current legislation discriminates against renters that have pets and are trying to find affordable housing in B.C.," reads the motion.

"The BC SPCA reports that “no pets” policies are the leading cause for surrender and abandonment of pets."

Ontario has prohibited the "no pets" policy, and it faces similar pressures in rental housing. Since the Ontario model has been successful, the motion argues it may be studied and applied here in B.C. The BC SPCA recently launched a campaign urging British Columbians to voice their support for more pet-friendly rental housing.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic – when they saw a surge in people seeking the comfort and companionship of animals –, the need for pet-friendly accommodation has become more urgent, said the organization in a news release.

“Approximately 25 percent of all animals surrendered to BC SPCA facilities are given up because their guardians can’t find housing that will allow their pet,” says Meghann Cant, manager of companion animal welfare (science and policy). “It is heartbreaking to see people forced to give up a pet because of housing issues.

The BC SPCA has created an online tool kit to help pet guardians find a home for themselves and their furry family members.

alloween hasn't even passed yet, but in our opinion, it's never too early to start getting excited for the holidays.

Though many festive traditions may look a little different this holiday season thanks to COVID-19, Vancouverites now have one sparkling (and socially distanced!) activity to look forward to this year.

The popular VanDusen Festival of Lights is officially set to return next month for its 36th annual event, the City of Vancouver announced last week.

The Festival of Lights, kicking off on Nov. 27 and set to run until Jan. 3, will once again turn the VanDusen Botanical Garden into a full-blown winter wonderland, illuminating 10 acres of magical garden space with more than one million twinkling lights, complete with themed areas, unique light features, and holiday music.

It's especially exciting news considering that Glow in the Garden, an annual haunting that takes guests on a whimsical journey through VanDusen Botanical Garden each October, was called off this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the City, "VanDusen Botanical Garden staff have worked closely with Vancouver Coastal Health and the Provincial Health Officer to ensure the event can be experienced safely during the COVID-19 pandemic," leading

to a variety of new safety protocols.

That means a few traditional features of the event will not return this year, "in order to reduce touch point features and limit gathering within the garden," the City explained. As such, the carousel, photos with Santa, live entertainment, the Make-A-Wish candle grotto, and the dancing lights show will not be part of this year's festival.

The event will operate at around 20 per cent of its usual capacity, while a new one-way, outdoor path will route visitors through the memorable holiday experience, beginning at Gate 2 (at the west end of the parking lot), with the Visitor Centre serving as the exit.

In addition, visitors will have to pre-purchased tickets, which will be subsequently scanned through plexiglass. No ticket sales will take place on-site.

Visits to the VanDusen Festival of Lights will be subject to a time limit of 45 minutes, while access to the Visitor Centre washrooms will only be available as guests exit the event.

(Portable washrooms and hand washing stations will be available in the parking lot and inside the garden.)

Masks are currently optional, and visitors are encouraged to wear them.

Readiness plans also need to establish protocols for the health of students if there are COVID-19 cases at the school, according to a federal news release.

The lifting of travel restrictions for students took effect October 20.

“This change to travel restrictions affects all international students, regardless of where they are travelling from or when their study permit was approved,” according to the release.

In Vancouver, this has been a cause for celebration – particularly from UBC president and vice-chancellor Santa J. Ono, who was glad to hear the news.

“I’m grateful to the federal government and provincial governments and members of the UBC community for working together to support the safe entry of international students to Canada,” Ono tweeted in response.

Family members might be able to accompany international students during their travel to Canada if their reason is “nonoptional,” such as helping the student establish themselves in the new country.

ith this week – Oct. 19 to 23 – being Small Business Week across Canada, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which serves the Lower Mainland, is encouraging consumers to make a special effort to shop small and support our local entrepreneurs.

This year has been challenging for everyone, especially small business owners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has proved as much of a financial crisis as a health one, significantly impacting Canadian business owners and their employees.

Prior to the pandemic, small businesses accounted for 97.9 per cent of all businesses in the country.

And since March, the Canadian economy has changed dramatically, leading to a profound negative impact, particularly on the small business community.

National surveys show that 60 per cent of small businesses with one to four employees and nearly 56 per cent of those with five to 19 employees reported declines in revenue 20 per cent or more.

"Despite the obvious difficulties, entrepreneurs have pivoted and attacked these challenges head-on," said Karla Laird, BBB’s manager for community and public relations.

“Many of them continue to provide our essential services, local jobs, and are an invaluable touchpoint in our communities.

This is why now, more than ever, it is important that we make an extra effort to support our locally-owned small businesses.

BBB is sharing the following tips about how consumers can support small businesses: • Research the shops nearest to you. Think of the things you want and find out which businesses are open and ready to serve.

Whether you are planning a local weekend getaway, thinking of an indoor project, looking for a new car, in need of a haircut or planning your wedding, start searching on BBB.org. Learn about the business, check their business rating and read reviews from past customers. Also check the businesses you frequently shop with. They may have altered their services to offer the product or

service you need right now.

• Get involved. Support the businesses that make your hometown unique. Are you a website designer, developer, or a social media expert? Offer your services to local businesses that don’t have an online presence to help them sell and promote online.

That’s a big risk for a team in a tight cap situation like the Canucks.

It might be a risk worth taking.

One reason is that arbitration would give the Canucks a second buyout window. The Canucks chose not to buy out any players earlier, but might regret that choice in their current cap crunch.

After Virtanen’s arbitration hearing, the Canucks would have another chance to buy out a player with at least a $4 million cap hit.

Another is that arbitration can act as a “tough love” motivational tool. Arbitration can get downright ugly at times, as teams are blunt about a player’s weaknesses and shortcomings in hopes of driving down the cap hit when the arbitrator makes a final decision.

Former NHLer Mike Johnson said the arbitration brief from his team, the Phoenix Coyotes, described him as “the worst forward in the NHL.” Brendan Morrison had to endure being told to his face that he was being entirely carried by Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi — a mouse to their elephant — and then-Canucks GM Brian Burke defended the nastiness, saying, “After inviting us into the alley, you can't complain if you get kicked in the groin.”

The biggest issues for Virtanen appear to be consistency and maturity, and it doesn’t seem like the team’s message is getting through. A blunt, to-the-face assessment might be just what Virtanen needs to wake him up and get him to take the next step in his career.

Even just the threat of that nastiness might be enough to lower Virtanen’s asking price. In a recent radio report, TSN’s Rick Dhaliwal suggested that Virtanen’s agent doesn’t want to go to arbitration because of how “ugly” it could get.

Of course, the potential rewards of that ugliness are tempting. Virtanen and his agent could claim he deserves $2.94 million like Jared McCann or $2.95 million like Robby Fabbri, both RFAs that recently re-signed and had similar seasons to Virtanen. On the other hand, both McCann and Fabbri have better career numbers and the Canucks could instead point to Anthony DuClair’s $1.65 million contract from last year and suggest Virtanen is a similarly one-dimensional goalscorer.

The possibility of arguing Virtanen down to a lower cap hit, waking up Virtanen with their arbitration case, and getting a second buyout window makes arbitration look like a decent idea for the Canucks.

Health Canada warns of 'counterfeit' hand sanitizer

ealth Canada is warning Canadians that a counterfeit version of the authorized Daily Shield hand sanitizer has been found for sale at a Dollarama store in Thunder Bay and that it may have been sold in Dollarama stores across the country.

In a release, the federal health department states that the counterfeit version of Daily Shield hand sanitizer is unauthorized and made with an unknown formulation, which means it may not be effective at killing bacteria and viruses, and may pose serious risks to health.

This counterfeit product is also suspected to contain methanol, which is not authorized for use in hand sanitizers and could cause severe adverse reactions or death if ingested.

Health Canada has been advised by the authorized license holder, Bio Life Sciences Corp. / 10932540 Canada Inc., that the product bearing the lot number Lot: 6942, Exp. May/2023 is counterfeit. It is sold in a 250 mL format.

While five businesses were "destroyed beyond salvation," in the blaze, officials say other nearby businesses suffered extended smoke and water damage, as well.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Capt. Jonathan Gormick said the five businesses that suffered catastrophic damage "will most likely need to be torn down."

He added, "I can't see those buildings being salvageable."

Reports identify those businesses as a Pharmasave, the Copa Café, a medical clinic, YiFang Taiwan Fruit bubble tea, and a dry cleaner.

The online fundraiser is being organized by Rania Hatz, executive director of the Cambie Village Business Improvement Association.

"In addition to the expenses that the owners will face before insurance assistance is available, staff of these businesses will also need help. Cambie Village would like to help with these merchants and their staff with immediate assistance as needed," the GoFundMe's description reads.

Organizers say any funds collected will be distributed "on an as-needed basis" to any impacted business owners and their staff. "All requests will be collected by our office, vetted by a subcommittee of the Board, and then funds will be dispensed," the description explains.

"We recognize that businesses will be receiving assistance from their insurance providers. These funds are to assist with more urgent needs and / or requests that may not be covered by insurance. Example: a waitress who needs to pay her car insurance next week, but won't be getting paid or tips; and we know any EI applications can take a few weeks. Another example may be that a server cannot pay for her daycare next

month since she's out of work, but not yet eligible for EI. "These are just two examples. We are open to helping all affected parties as needed."

To date, the fundraiser has raised $5,700 of its $25,000 goal, with several donors taking to the comments section to leave notes of gratitude to impacted business owners for years of great service.

In a comment posted to the GoFundMe page, Michael JakacSinclair said that his mom's store, a Pharmasave location, was among the impacted businesses.

"That store was the little engine that could for 15 years. It put me through private school, university, exchange, high-level competitive swimming, and all the privileges I was honoured to have," Jakac-Sinclair wrote.

"Thank you to the Cambie community for filling your prescriptions at the store or if you were just visiting Mina, you were indirectly supporting the dreams and aspirations of my sister and I. Nelli is determined to be business as usual for the time being she will be relocated temporarily at the Pharmasave on Main & 30th. ids in East Vancouver who plan on trick-or-treating this year have good reason to celebrate.

Instead of calling it quits amid the pandemic, one neighbour has created a nearly two-storey candy chute to give out goodies from a safe social distance.

The homeowner will now be able to carry on the beloved Halloween tradition of giving out free candy to minors from their second-storey window.

Online responses to the local invention ranged from celebratory commendations to expressing doubt about whether it will get the job done.

Other B.C. CDC-approved ways to hand out candy include, using tongs to dispense goodies or leaving out a tray of individually-wrapped candy for kids to choose from.

The public health agency is also encouraging that trick-ortreaters stay close to home in small groups this year.

Youth mask up to speak out at anti-mask rally

mong the approximately 1,000 people police estimated were at a Vancouver “Freedom Mega Rally” Saturday protesting COVID-19 lockdown measures – the voices of young counter-protestors might have gone unnoticed.

But the handful of young activists came prepared with signs and masks.

They stayed for hours, starting conversations with groups of demonstrators adamantly against "censorship, lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine mandates, quarantines, travel bans, social distancing, and contact tracing.”

Among them, Vancouver teenager Grace Hennebery, who held up a sign with fellow young activist Mercedes Fenrich that read: “No mask on your face, you big disgrace, spreading your germs all over the place.”

The high school seniors told Vancouver Is Awesome, “it is important for people to be aware that there are two sides.”

The point of the poster was to bring awareness to both perspectives of the anti-mask, mask debate, Fenrich added.

After being coughed on and “pushed around” Saturday, even having their sign taken by an anti-mask protestor, Hennebery said the duo came back for the second day of demonstrations on October 18.

“Even though we’re teenagers we try to look at both perspectives and base our opinions off of not only science but also what we think would benefit the community,” the teens agreed.

Hennebery – whose mother is a nurse and father is immunocompromised – said she’s old enough to know that much of the information being spread by speakers at the rally wasn't backed by credible science.

“I get worried about the effects of what they are saying to people, I worry about where they get this information and why they can’t seem to find a common ground and most of all the lives that have been lost and continue to,”

A group of Vancouver organizations and stakeholders, including three current city councillors, who signed a letter in defiance of the rallies planned.

"We are particularly alarmed to find out that an alliance of conspiracy believers, anti-vaxxers, white supremacists and neo-Nazis is planning a major two-day event in Vancouver October 17 and 18, which will include the arrival of a convoy of such extremists coming from Saskatchewan and Alberta," the letter read.

"We are stalwart defenders of the rights of assembly and free speech, but we cannot be so naïve as to allow a violent neo-fascist movement to grow and threaten society – including its most vulnerable members - behind the façade of free expression."

Full 2020 B.C. election results likely to be unknown until well into November

ritish Columbians will be uncertain about the full result of the October 24 election for weeks afterward because so many voters are choosing to vote by mail.

As of October 16, approximately 717,000 voters have requested vote-by-mail packages, and 177,000 of those packages had been returned to Elections BC, according to the non-partisan office of the B.C. legislature responsible for conducting the election.

The pandemic has prompted an enormous increase in mail-in voting, given that in 2017, only 6,517 people voted by mail.

All mail-in ballots will not be counted for at least 13 days after the election, or starting on November 6, Elections BC spokesman Andrew Watson told Glacier Media.

While all ballots cast in advance polls, and on election day, will be counted on October 24, there will be a delay in counting mail-in ballots in part because all of those ballots must be sent back to electoral officers in each riding from Elections BC’s offices in Victoria, he said.

Elections BC must also verify that each vote cast by mail was made by someone who is eligible to vote.

The organization then must also cross-reference the names of people who have voted by mail with the voters’ list to ensure that the person did not also vote in person in an advance poll or on election day.

“That part of the process is automated,” Watson said.

The counting, however, will be done by hand.

All parties will be able to appoint scrutineers to watch the

counting of the mail-in ballots. Some debate may take place in interpreting a voter's intention on the ballot, particularly for early mail-in ballots that were issued before the cut-off for candidate nominations. Those ballots required the voter to write in the name of the desired candidate.

“We may have districts where they don’t have nearly as many mail-ins as the others,” Watson said. “They may be able to start before [ridings] that have a lot more mail-ins, but the counting will not start any sooner than within 13 days.”

Watson said that he doubted that it would take “weeks” past November 6 for final results, although counting could take several days.

Elections BC has hired at least “hundreds” of people to be able to conduct the counts, although Watson did not have an

exact figure for how many people have been hired.

It is legal for an eligible voter to request a mail-in ballot, and then vote in person instead. In those cases, however, the voter must destroy the mail-in ballot – not use it, and not return it to Elections BC. While Watson said voter fraud is rare, it can happen.

When voters cast ballots – in person or by mail – they are usually required to sign their name on a form that says that they are eligible to vote and that they have not yet voted. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, election officials are getting people who vote in person to say the declaration instead.

Penalties for making a false declaration range up to $20,000 and up to two years in prison, with the person also being disqualified from voting or serving as an MLA for seven years.

Watson, however, said he is unaware of anyone ever being penalized for voter fraud in a B.C. election.

The deadline for mailing a ballot back to Elections BC has passed, and Watson said anyone who has a mail-in ballot should take it to a polling station to use there, or otherwise vote in person.

All mail-in ballots within a riding must be received by Elections BC officials in that riding from Elections BC head office before any ballot counting can start in the riding, Watson said. That process may also prompt delays.

OPINION The BC NDP has a racism problem it has failed to address

f you watched last week's 2020 leadership debate between Premier John Horgan, Andrew Wilkinson of the BC Liberals and Sonia Furstenau of the BC Greens, you likely learned two things.

One is that Sonia Furstenau might be the most engaging speaker of the three main party leaders.

Two is that John Horgan hadn't yet had the time to bother thinking about systemic racism in British Columbia.

When asked to speak about his personal privilege as a white person, he let the province know that he hasn't been paying attention to a key issue that has been top of mind for many voters over the past few months.

His answer was that he doesn't "see colour," and that he had friends of colour when he was growing up, playing lacrosse.

It was a shocking statement to hear come from the leader of our province, and one that the people in his party who prepared him for the debate likely saw as a curveball; they clearly didn't see it coming, and he was caught flatfooted.

Horgan and his campaign team - and, heck, the people who surround him when he's not campaigning - seem oblivious to the common fact that saying you're colour blind is a nice way of saying you don't give a crap about addressing the issue of racial inequality. That it's not important to you.

It feels silly typing that out as it's common knowledge.

There have been multiple books written about the subject over the past few years.

Those are books (and ideas) that Horgan and his advisors had clearly not even heard of, let alone read, before Tuesday; it was only the next day, after the internet lit up over Horgan's "blindness", that he offered up an apology that included the words "I was jolted out of my comfort last night and I’m going to reflect on that.”

Okay. Cool. The man was extremely late to the game, but now he had time to think about his privilege, and about what he might do the next time he was presented with an issue that directly (or even indirectly) involves racism, systemic or otherwise. He let us know that maybe he'll take it head-on, showing voters he is living in the same year that we are.

Right?

Wrong.

After a few days of "reflecting", Horgan was handed a test.

It came on a platter, perfectly framed with the issue at hand and one of his candidates positioned squarely in the middle of it.

It was revealed that Nathan Cullen, the star NDP candidate for Stikine, was caught on a Zoom video making a racist comment about the Haida candidate he's running against. This was after the NDP had elbowed out an

indigenous candidate, Annita McPhee, to make way for Cullen, fudging the rules of their own equity policy.

10 hereditary chiefs of the Gitxsan Nation released a letter calling on Horgan to remove Cullen as a candidate after the comment surfaced, stating in a letter that "Anything less will be a further signal of disrespect to Indigenous people in British Columbia, and inconsistent with our stated commitment to reconciliation."

So the test was a simple one, really.

Multiple choice. Two options:

Do you permit racism within your party?

1. Yes. 2. No. John Horgan went with option 1, saying that he was disappointed in Cullen's "intemperate comments," and that he was sure the man would work hard to make up for them.

And that was that.

He failed the test, showing voters that he's going to need some more time to "reflect" on his colour blindness.

id you forget about your bike at one of TransLink’s bicycle parkades?

Well, it’s being donated to charity.

Bicycles that have been left abandoned or discarded in TransLink’s Bike Parkades will be removed and donated to charity over the coming weeks, said the transit authority.

“The Bike Parkade cleanout is a first for TransLink and will ensure an efficient use of bike storage space as customers return to using the transit system,” said a news release.

Starting next week, Transit Police will place a removable tag on all bicycles stored in parkades and take down detailed descriptions of the bikes, said TransLink, adding that two weeks later, during the week of Nov. 9, Transit Police will remove any bicycles which remain tagged and match the recorded description.

“Bicycles removed will first be checked if they were stolen through police databases and 529 Garage, which is an online service to report stolen bicycles in the community,” said the news release. “Owners will be contacted

by Transit Police if a bicycle’s serial number matches a police report or a 529 Garage report.”

All bicycles that have not been reported as stolen will be donated to the PEDAL Society’s Pedals for the People Program.
