The Canucks must shed salary

T

he Canucks took a major step forward this season; now they need to make sure they don’t take two steps back.

To the residents of Oakridge, We thank you for 60 years of loyalty. As Oakridge Centre is temporarily closing, we invite you to shop with us on MaisonBirks.com or visit one of our nearby Maison Birks locations, West Hasting, Park Royal and Guilford Town Centre. A heartfelt thank you to all our customers, it has been a pleasure serving you. We look forward to seeing you for the reopening of Oakridge Centre. We’re closing our doors on Saturday, September 27th, but before we go:

ENJOY UP TO

AND AN ADDITIONAL

10% OFF ALREADY REDUCED MERCHANDISE *

With their young core — their two best players are 20 and 21 — the Canucks look poised to be one of the best teams in the NHL in the near future after their surprise playoff run. The flat salary cap, however, could complicate things.

The Canucks should be sitting pretty when it comes to the salary cap, given that their two best players, Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson, are still on their entry-level contracts. But past contract mistakes, along with the looming spectre of Roberto Luongo’s cap recapture penalty, have put the squeeze on the Canucks at exactly the time they should be making major additions in their pursuit of the Stanley Cup. Based on who they already have signed for next season, the Canucks have around $16 million available under the cap, but they have some major players that need to be re-signed, namely Jacob Markstrom, Tyler Toffoli, and Chris Tanev. The Canucks want all three of these players back and for good reason. Markstrom was their MVP this past season, Toffoli fills a major hole at right wing in their top-six, and Tanev is a vital minute muncher on defence, leading the team in ice time on the penalty kill by a wide margin. Those three players alone could eat up most, if not all, of that $16 million, but other Canucks are also in need of a new contract, like Troy Stecher, Jake Virtanen, Adam Gaudette, Tyler Motte, Zack MacEwen, and Josh Leivo. In other words, the Canucks can’t re-sign everyone they want to without losing someone else from the roster to clear cap space. In an ideal world, the Canucks would trade

one or more of their big ticket bottom-six forwards like Loui Eriksson or Brandon Sutter, replacing them with younger, cheaper players. That would enable the team to bring back a team next year that is, at the very least, comparable with this year’s roster.

Most teams around the NHL, however, are not in a position to take on bad contracts because of the flat salary cap, so finding even one trading partner to alleviate the Canucks’ cap situation, let alone two or more, is going to be tough. And costly. Getting rid of a bad contract without taking one back will mean adding a sweetener or two — a prospect, draft pick, or roster player that the Canucks don’t want to lose. The alternative is to simply not re-sign one of their big name free agents. That would clear up their cap concerns, but leave the team a little bit worse. Markstrom will be the hardest to replace, as goaltenders of his caliber are not readily available and Thatcher Demko hasn’t proven himself as a starter, but top-six wingers and top-four defencemen like Toffoli and Tanev don’t grow on trees either. Finding a way to shed contracts while simultaneously improving the roster will take some real creativity from Canucks GM Jim Benning. Otherwise, he’ll have to depend on improvement from within. There’s a chance that would be enough. Pettersson is constantly getting better, Hughes could take a big jump from his rookie year, Brock Boeser still has 30-goal potential, and the prospect ranks include players like Nils Höglander, Olli Juolevi, and Jack Rathbone that could offer an upgrade if they’re ready for the NHL. Banking on young players taking that kind of major step is a gamble. Barring some major wheeling and dealing from the Canucks front office, it’s one they’ll have to take. Starting Sept. 4 crews of around 70 film professionals began volunteering their time and expertise to see the Twin Suns Film Foundation production come to life in Metro Vancouver. The group released a trailer for the crowdfunded project this May. Stunts saw boulders fly across the forest and stormtroopers – who wore masks for the duration of filming this weekend – fired shots from E-11 blaster rifle props.

Brown acknowledged the upside to working during a pandemic when so many film professionals are unemployed – “We were fortunate that a large body of film workers was able to continue crafting their expertise here on set." It meant that upscale stunts performers, costume designers, and other experts – who would normally be booked with paid gigs – had time to volunteer on the project. “It has brought the film community together with the 'Star Wars' community.” Vancouver production management company, Promosa, is using the project as a test pilot for its new virtual technology, which afforded digital screen extensions that added 3D imagery and scenic backdrops.

“Not everybody makes it through war,” Brown hinted.

Bucketheads first episode is expected to debut sometime in December, after more months of filming and postproduction work in Metro Vancouver.

Before any member of the cast or crew arrived on set they were tested with forehead temperature scans and provided personal protective equipment, including masks.

Billboard displaying support for J.K. Rowling

A

Vancouver billboard plastered with a message of support for J.K. Rowling was swiftly covered up Saturday afternoon after sparking a firestorm of outrage on social media.

Friends Chris Elston and Amy Hamm paid for the message, which read, "I JK Rowling," to appear on a massive billboard located at East Hastings Street and Glen Drive, owned by advertising company Pattison Outdoors.

In a tweet posted early Friday evening, Elston shared a photo of the "swanky billboard" that he said was motivated by his admiration for the Harry Potter author, thanking her "for standing up for women and children" and calling her "an inspiration." Rowling has been widely condemned by the LGBTQ community and its allies since last December, when she voiced her support for a U.K. researcher who was fired for stating her belief that “it is impossible to change sex." She came under further fire in June, after doubling-down on that stance while criticizing an opinion piece that used the phrase “people who menstruate.”

famous British author tweeted at the time. "Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” She continued, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.” In her own tweet, billboardbacker Hamm described the Vancouver display as "TERFy hijinks"—an acronym generally used to designate

"trans-exclusionary radical feminism." Vancouver city councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung is one of many local residents who voiced her opposition to the billboard after seeing it on her Twitter feed Saturday afternoon. A little more than an hour after Kirby-Yung posted the above tweet, Elston shared a video on the social media platform showing the billboard—which had already been vandalized with paint—being plastered over, just one day after it went up. When reached by phone Saturday afternoon, Kirby-Yung said her initial reaction to the billboard was that "It was a no-no." "Right now there's so much happening in our city and it's such a tough time for people with the pandemic, and we're seeing rising incidents of hate in the city. We've seen increasing, sort of, calling out of our cultural communities ... and now we see another manifestation with this billboard," she explained. Kirby-Yung said she interpreted the message as "an intentional action to specifically condemn the trans community," with a conscious effort to skirt around hate speech guidelines. "To me the message is very clear, because saying 'I love J.K. Rowling' very much means that you identify very clearly with a figure who has been widely condemned herself for speaking out against the trans community." In an open letter addressed to Pattison Outdoors and posted to Twitter, Elston and Hamm wrote, "We did this because we were inspired by Rowling standing up for the rights of women, girls and children." They said "Rowling is not transphobic, and neither are we. Like her, we are concerned about the impact of gender identity ideology on the rights on women and girls." The pair continued on to state their belief that "most Canadians recognize that 'woman' is a biological reality, rather than a feeling." Elston and Hamm signed off by asking the advertising company to "stand with us, stand with women, and stand up for free expression."

"It is always tricky because we have the Charter of Rights and Freedoms protecting freedom of speech, and the definition of hate speech is a very stringent one to fall under," she said. "I think that the few individuals that I understand were behind this billboard are very well aware of that." However, the Pattison Outdoors site is still governed by Canadian advertising standards, Kirby-Yung noted, adding that she had already reached out to City of Vancouver staff "to get more specific information about this particular location and see if the City has any recourse," given its relationship with

While it remains unclear who made the decision to cover up the billboard's message, Kirby-Yung said "it's fantastic" to hear action was taken to erase the inflammatory content in short order. "I'd like to understand more details about whether that's action taken by Pattison or the City, but I think quick action sends such an important message to our trans community that they are supported." Rowling also made headlines in Vancouver earlier this year, when she threatened legal action against a Metro Vancouver transgender activist who tweeted that the author "can no longer be trusted around children.”

Hailing from Tokyo, Menya Itto is considered the top of the heap when it comes to tsukemen-style ramen, and they have revealed plans to expand with a franchise in Vancouver. Menya Itto is moving into 1479 Robson Street in the now-closed second location of Ramen Koika (pour one out for them; Koika added this second outpost in spring 2018, four years after launching their original location on Davie). Of the OG Menya Itto, a little backgrounder here from blogger DL's Travels: "This minimalist shop has been massively popular

ever since Yukihiko Sakamoto first opened its door in 2010. He now has five shops in the area and a whole bunch of overseas [franchises] bearing its name, from Hong Kong to Taiwan to Thailand." And now comes Canada. It seems initially Menya Itto was looking to have their first foray into Vancouver open this summer, but for now we'll just have to wait and see. Anti-Asian hate crimes in B.C. outweigh those in U.S during COVID-19 pandemic: report

The organizations have united in a call to see the federal government include an anti-racism strategy in its postpandemic recovery plan. Data collected as a result was released on Wednesday, Sept. 9 – the anniversary of riots that targeted Vancouver’s Chinese, Japanese, and Punjabi Sikh communities in 1907. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic 600 anti-Asian incidents have been reported across seven provinces. “The recent surge in anti-Asian violence, vandalism, and xenophobia is reminiscent of the 1907 anti-Asian riots and the decades of targeted discrimination that followed,” explained a Project 1907 spokesperson. In what is being called the first of its kind in Canada, the joint findings found that British Columbia had more incidents per capita of any other sub-national region in North America. Executive Director of Toronto’s Chinese Canadian National Council, Justin Kong, called the data “disturbing, particularly when viewing it in contrast to the U.S.” “The COVID-19 pandemic remains deeply racialized,” Kong asserted. The data also concluded that in B.C., Asian women accounted for 70 per cent of reported incidents. Some have faced verbal abuse in the form of racial slurs, threats, or derogatory remarks. Others faced racism that was much more endangering.

Back in May, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) admitted that 77 hate-associated files were opened in 2020, up from just 51 antiAsian incidents in 2019. “After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we identified a disturbing trend: an increase in anti-Asian hate crimes and haterelated incidents,” said VPD Cst. Howard Chow. The increase in such crimes led to the VPD creating an anti-hate unit this July to clamp down on the growing trend. Anyone who is a victim of a hate crime is asked to call 9-1-1. Nonemergency incidents can be reported by calling 604-717-3321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. By Sarah Grochowski

Vancouver ranked most popular Canadian city for veganism

L

et's hear it for our plant-power!

Vancouver has been ranked one of the top 10 cities in the world for veganism, and is the top - and only - Canadian city on that list.

The list was compiled by the website Chef's Pencil, which used Google Trends to analyze "the search interest level for veganism across the world." Some of the search terms they included, in any language, were "veganism," "vegan restaurants," and the like. "Veganism is now twice as popular as it was just five years ago," notes Chef's Pencil. Vancouver landed ninth in the world, and was only one of two North American cities in the top 10; Portland, Oregon came in second overall. The top city for veganism in the world, per Chef's Pencil's

A11

data analysis, is Bristol, UK.

.:$C7::1 +D?090? @!E =.,G):::

Overall, Canada ranked ninth among global nations for veganism based on web searches. Among Canadian provinces, British Columbia has the highest ratio of vegan-related searches, with Ontario a distant second and Nova Scotia ranking third.

246"&&(! / 28;,"&&(! / $=-!0 / 78"*>'.

Vancouver's vegan scene has been expanding rapidly in the past few years, and the city is home to a number of strong plant-based brands, including food products, restaurants, and other businesses. Earlier this year, a popular travel site, Big7, named two Vancouver spots on their list of its picks for the best vegan restaurants in the world (they're The Acorn and MeeT). This summer, Vancouver launched its first-ever all-vegan farmers market, too.

Remember to plan ahead and travel responsibly.

Celebrate Harvest and the Changing Season Autumn is a time for celebration and renewal, from colourful foliage to food and drink. See the elusive golden larch in E.C. Manning Provincial Park, or on a guided hike with Playwest Mountain Experiences in the Purcells. Celebrate fall’s harvest with a visit to a winery or a farm tour along culinary corridors like the Fraser, Okanagan, or Cowichan valleys. Prepare your palate for October’s Craft Beer Month with a taste test on the BC Ale Trail.

Change Your View With a Cabin or Ranch Stay Get off the grid with a relaxing getaway to a luxury lodge, guest ranch, or rustic cabin. Stay at Quaaout Lodge & Spa at Talking Rock Golf Resort for lakeside serenity in the Shuswap or Cameron Ridge Bungalows in the Cariboo’s playground of pine and spruce. For a memorable holiday on horseback, visit Wells Gray Guest Ranch or Flying U Ranch. Visit Charming Small Towns BC’s small towns are tucked among mountaintops, rainforests, and coastlines—find your ideal location and stay awhile. Mountain towns are perfect for anyone looking to reconnect with nature on a grand scale. Forested peaks are at your doorstep calling you to adventure. Nestled in the Selkirk Mountains, Nelson is home to hundreds of heritage buildings and an eclectic food scene. Further east, towns like Cranbrook, Golden, and Fernie offer the dramatic scenery of the East Kootenays. BC’s rugged shoreline draws both adventurers and artists, who flock there for

Find Beauty in the City The tree-lined streets of BC’s urban centres offer plenty of natural beauty. Stay in Victoria and rent a bike to explore the Galloping Goose Regional Trail that runs from Victoria’s downtown waterfront to a hidden lake, a quiet cove, and a forest of fall foliage. Pick up treats at Little Vienna Bakery to refuel after your ride. Spend a weekend in Vancouver and wander the West End for a display of Instagramworthy autumn leaves. Or, visit Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown, with its water lily pond and burgundy hues, for a peaceful oasis in a bustling city centre.
