Face masks now mandatory on transit
S
tarting this week, all customers are now required to wear non-medical masks or face coverings on board all TransLink transit vehicles. GETTY
The mandatory measure, announced earlier this month by TransLink, kicked in Monday, August 24.
At the time, the transit authority called the new measure “essential” to ensuring customers’ confidence as the economy continues to reopen and people return to the transit system.
These customers can request a TransLinkbranded card, which notes they are exempt from the policy. The cards are available at the Compass Customer Service Centres at Stadium-Chinatown and Waterfront stations. Transit police are able to enforce the new rules, however, TransLink has said the initial focus of this policy will be on awareness and education. Frontline employees may also inform or remind customers to wear a mask while onboard transit. BC Transit is also making face masks mandatory as of Aug. 24.

People unable to wear face coverings due to an underlying medical condition or disability are exempt from the new policy and won’t be asked to wear a mask or face covering.
Exemptions for the mandatory mask policy include: • Anyone with an underlying medical condition or disability which inhibits the ability to wear a mask or face covering • Persons unable to place or remove a mask or face covering without assistance • Children under 5 years of age • Employees working behind a physical barrier or within areas designated for employees and not for public access • Police, employees or first responders in an emergency By Kirsten Clarke

Kamloops-based salsa company is responding after several of its products were pulled from shelves in relation to an ongoing salmonella outbreak linked to U.S.-grown onions.

The Kamloops company is offering a coupon for any customer forced to throw away a salsa included on the recall list, in the event the store the customer purchased the salsa does not provide a reimbursement.
Earlier this month, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) expanded its already massive recall of U.S. onions to include seven varieties of salsa from Fresh is Best Salsa & Co. In a release, the small B.C. business said its staff immediately notified distributors and customers following the recall, discarded any potentially affected products and is now using a different source for onions.
Anyone who purchased Fresh is Best salsa is urged to check the recall list to determine whether that specific product is included. According to the company, any salsa with a best before date of Oct. 6 or later is considered safe to consume and enjoy.
Fresh is Best is a popular locallybased business, with Mexicaninspired products like salsas, guacamole, hot sauces, bean dips and taco shells available on most grocery shelves across the province. The company's tortilla chips also had their 15 minutes of fame a couple of years back, appearing in the background of an episode of the TV show The Big Bang Theory. The company has its own storefront location in Vancouver, on West Broadway.

All additional test locations are in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Victoria.
Customers booking online for Class 5 or 7 road tests will have the option to book at one of 10 temporary test locations as they begin opening. ICBC says the measures are being taken in order to complete road tests cancelled due to the pandemic, and also to meet demand for new appointments. Eligible customers should book a road test online. Those wishing Class 1 to 4 road tests must book by phone at 1-800-950-1498. As a safety precaution, all examiners are required to wear personal protective

ritish Columbia declared a state of emergency in both 2017 and 2018 during two record-setting years for wildfires. Here's a look at B.C.'s wildfire history:
Record years: In 2017, about 12,000 square kilometres burned in B.C. and in 2018, more than 13,000 square kilometres were scorched. Fires in 2020: The latest statistics were published Wednesday and show that 3,784 hectares had burned in the province from the 540 fires that had started so far this year. Abundance of fuel: Prof. Lori Daniels of the University of British Columbia's department of forest and conservation sciences said Indigenous people in the south Okanagan area regularly used fire to cultivate food and medicinal plants, create habitat for game and protect their communities. "In the absence of Indigenous cultural fires and with fire suppression over the last century, the forest has grown in and filled grasslands, so we have more trees and burnable material." Daniels said she and her research team have worked in the Penticton region where one of the most serious fires started this week. She said the blaze in the Penticton area is within the normal range of fire pattern that would be seen in any given summer, especially for that region. Conditions this year: The fire near Penticton comes during a period hot and dry conditions. "We've had a relatively cool, wet summer. So, this is our first, one of the first major fires that is burning in the Okanagan," said Daniels.
Provincial government response: Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops was chosen last month to do research that will improve the province's ability to forecast, prevent and respond to wildfires. Forest Minister Doug Donaldson said the research will help

Climate change: In a paper published in January 2019, researchers from the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis said hot, dry weather directly caused by greenhouse gas emissions increased B.C.'s fire risk in 2017 by up to four times. The same factors are likely to have increased the amount of land scorched by up to 11 times. The scientists also compared the average area burned each year between 1961 and 1970 with the area that was scorched in 2017. The paper attributes about 90 per cent of the 12,000 square kilometres burned in 2017 to the influence of climate change.

"Research has a big role to play, especially during these times where fire behaviour has changed drastically," said Donaldson. "This is what the experts tell me that with the climate emergency we are seeing bigger fires. The fuel load is different. The dry out conditions are different as the weather patterns change."
