Black Lives Matter message kept alive on Emancipati tion Day

A

full-throated roar for justice rang through downtown Vancouver streets August 1 to mark Emancipation Day, the 186th anniversary of the day slavery was abolished in Canada and throughoutthe British Empire in 1834. “We’re the second province in Canada to have August 1 as Emancipation Day,” said organizer Nova Stevens, a copy of a City of Vancouver proclamation in her hand. The event began under the Olympic torch at Jack Poole Plaza and moved up Thurlow through the wind blowing under the wings of the statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. The destination: Sunset Beach for speeches, music, cultural celebrations, soul food and fellowship. There, the words “Black Lives Matter’ done in the colours of the rainbow paid homage to the Pride events ordinarily bringing hundreds of thousands to Vancouver’s West End for the annual Pride Week parade. That has been cancelled due to the pandemic, an abbreviated parade

version expected to take place August 2 with 50 people at Davie and Denman streets at noon.

after night, evoking memories of the 1960s’ civil rights movement led by people such as Martin Luther King Jr.

“Say his name,” Stevens and co-organizer Shamika Mitchell called to the marching crowd.

Taylor was an unarmed 26-year-old woman fatally shot in a barrage of seemingly out-of-control police gunfire in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 13.

“George Floyd,” the crowd roared back. “Say her name.” “Breonna Taylor,” the crowd responded. The march follows Vancouver’s June 19 Juneteenth march supporting Black Lives Matter, a growing movement to raise awareness of Black issues in the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police May 25. “I can’t breathe,” George said repeatedly while an officer knelt on his neck before as he died. That officer has been charged with second-degree murder while three others are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder. Floyd’s death sparked outrage around the world but particularly in the United States where thousands took to the streets night

“It has died down,” Stevens said. “It should not be a trend. It’s not a hashtag. It’s not a black square.” “We’ve experienced a racial problem that has gone on for hundreds of years,” she said. “We don’t want it to be a trend.”

Stevens called on people not to just be bystanders in making change. “Use your voice. A voice is powerful beyond measure. You don’t need to be a follower. You can lead.” Stevens and Mitchell want to see Emancipation Day go Canadawide. Stevens said organizers have been very cognisant of organizing a large event as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

She said masks and hand sanitizer were on hand with social distancing protocols in place. Medical teams in white shirts with red crosses circulated in the crowd.

“We’ve done our due diligence,” Stevens said. Stevens said organizers intend to keep doing Juneteenth marches annually. “We just want to create change,” she said. By Jeremy Hainsworth

Video confrontation shows man threatening to stab City Councillor Pete Fry

T

here are rising tensions in the Strathcona neighbourhood, where an encampment sprung up months ago, with one city councilor calling on the province to step in after he says he was threatened.

Councillor Pete Fry, who lives in Strathcona, was threatened by a man last Friday morning after he says he stepped in to protect a neighbour.

The man threatened to stab him and threw a punch, which he was able to block, Fry added. "This is a fairly regular occurrence of late," he said in an interview on Saturday, alleging that children have been threatened, families have faced violence and a handgun was found at a playground in the park. Vancouver police did not retu turn u requests for comment on whether they were investigating the incident or on if there was a spike in crime since the encampment started. Kii Allen, Kim All a neighbour who caught part of the confrontation on video, said it shows the level of tension in the neighbourhood. It's not known kn n whether the man was a member of the homeless encampment, but Allen All said she's frustrated.

require support from more senior levels of government. Navigation centres, for which the B.C. government allocated $50 million in funding over the next three year towards in its pre-pandemic budget, would be a good first step, he added. Such centres would have beds, support and wraparound services to help people with addictions and other health issues find more permanent housing. "The focus of the navigation centre is to help the people who want and need our help," he said. But he's unsure if the leaders of the camp would accept losing their self-governance in such a model. "I haven't been supportive and I don't think they're capable of managing this camp," he said. "T This is a political game and an activist approach. I don't think the end results will be the best for the people who need our help." Minister of Social Development and Poverty tyy Reduction Shane Simpson said in a statement that he appreciates the concerns raised by Fry ryy and other residents.

"We're on the edge. We've just had enough. And that altercation (Friday) is not a single thing. It's a common thing," she said.

"We're aski king i the federal government to step up and join us in providing funding fu u for housing. I'm also encouraging the police to increase their efforts around community tyy safety tyy in light of the concerns we've heard from Strathcona residents," he said.

Fry ryy said he believes the issues facing the encampment, involving addiction and housing, fall outside of the city ty's y jurisdiction and

Simpson added that the provincial government has moved more than 2,500 people into new supportive housing since the

pandemic started and would have more to say about navigation centres in the coming weeks. The encampent was started after previous tent cities in Oppenheimer and CRAB parks were shut down by court injunctions. The Vancouver Park Board passed a motion in July allowing people to camp in parks, with campers required to pack up and move every morning. Chrissy Brett, one of the tent city's spokeswomen and organizers, said the city had a chance to stop the situation from escalating to where it has but failed to do so. She condemned violence between residents and campers, but said the differing g wayys police resp pond to the incidents hig ghlig ght the prejudice campers face. "I've faced violence from the regular public, who aren't from here, and nobody comes to our aid. And yet, when other people call about things, we have police that come in in a really violent way," Brett said. She added that she doesn't believe the person seen threatening Fry ryy on video was a resident of the tent encampment. Brett reiterated her support for self-governing, low-barrier supports to allow campers an alternative form of housing. By Nick Wells, The Canadian Press

s the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to rise in B.C., public health officials are continuing to encourage mask-wearing as one important way to help prevent the spread of the virus when physical distancing is difficult. But as one Vancouver-based business realized recently, procuring a comfortable and reliable protective face covering might not be so simple for some members of the community.

Josh Thiessen, the company's director of operations, dropped by the Downtown Eastside Women's Shelter on Thursday, July 30, alongside two staff members, to donate and distribute 300 masks to shelter residents.

In addition to the donation, the business - which serves as a parent company for 12 web-based apparel brands - is also looking to help out those searching for more sustainable mask options. and connected during the initial phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. While people were forced to stay physically distanced, the inspired artwork brought them together through healing, joyful and thought-provoking creations. Now, VMF has announced the dates for its expanded 3-week festival: Aug. 18 through Sep. 7. It will feature over 60 new murals in 9 neighbourhoods across the city. Plus, a new mobile app to help you discover them all. @VANMURALFEST

"Murals can help transform public spaces and serve as catalysts for addressing many socio-cultural issues. Together, we can help reignite and connect our communities," writes the VMF in a release.

T

he Vancouver Mural Festival returns this summer with an expanded three-week celebration of murals across the city.

Over the past five years, organizers state the VMF has produced over 200 murals in Vancouver and the surrounding area. Now, they say they have re-imagined the celebration to include more of them. This spring, the VMF painted more than 60 temporary murals on boarded-up storefronts with the #MakeArtWhileApart project. Afterward, the VMF says it received overwhelmingly positive feedback from people who needed to stay hopeful

"Our original call for artists was during the month of November 2019 for this summer's festival. That seems like ages ago! In the meantime, we have expanded the festival beyond our original neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant to paint murals in neighbourhoods across the city. This enables more people to celebrate murals within their own communities, while supporting local businesses by encouraging exploration across the city." This year, instead of a massive street party, Vancouver Mural Festival has been reimagined to share the positivity and spirit of VMF with even more people and communities across our city. In addition to its original home in Mount Pleasant, VMF will bring over 60 new murals to 9 neighbourhoods:

well-loved Vancouver fine dining restaurant revealed in early March 2020 they are closing their doors after an incredible 35-year-run in the city's Kitsilano neighbourhood.

Bishop's, named for chef-owner John Bishop, 75, had planned to close its doors August 1, however COVID-19 restaurant shutdowns cut away at their farewell season.

The future of seniors’ and dementia care is already here hile the world adapts to the new normal imposed by COVID-19, Providence has strengthened its commitment to transforming the delivery of seniors’ care by creating happy and enriching experiences for the residents and families we serve in our care homes. A long-term care home on Vancouver Island is moving steadily forward with its investment in hope: a person-centred approach to seniors and dementia care where the cultivation of engagement and joy is a priority. Providence Living, a non-profit healthcare organization established by Providence Health Care to redefine seniors’ care in British Columbia, recently signed a project agreement with Island Health, cementing plans to build in Comox what is believed to be the first publicly funded dementia village in BC and possibly Canada.

Construction of the 156-bed dementia village will take place on the site of the existing The Views long-term care home and the former St. Joseph’s General Hospital. Once completed, the dementia village will replace the existing beds at The Views.

The bricks and mortar of a dementia village Inspired by the dementia village in De Hogeweyk, Netherlands, the Comox dementia village will have small, self-contained households of 12 residents where each resident will have her or his own room and bathroom, contributing to heightened infection control in a modern space. Smaller groupings of residents will be created based on cultural bonds, friendships and social activities. Residents will take part in everyday activities within the household or wider, secure village, and gain a sense of belonging by being involved in food preparation, cooking and laundry.

The Dutch model of care is already underway in Comox But before the first shovel hits the ground – likely in 2021 – a transformation will have been underway for some time within the walls of The Views, reflecting the philosophy of care of the dementia village model. The Views is already incorporating many features of the Dutch model within its current infrastructure. It has integrated aspects of community life – a hallmark of De Hogeweyk – by housing a children’s daycare and tutoring service, Thrift Shop, Comox Youth Music Camp, Rotary Book Sales, General Store, and adult day program on the grounds.

Within the village, residents will have freedom of movement, safe access to the outdoors, and interaction with the community, including opportunities for intergenerational connections. Amenities will be available that are actual destinations and points of interest for everyone and their families to enjoy, such as community gardens, children’s daycare, art studio, bistro, and chapel. Visitors will be able to drop by and become part of the community, whether that means stopping in for a meal, renting spaces for music instruction, or allowing kids to practice their instruments after school while nearby residents watch and listen.

“Modelling the traits of a dementia village here in Comox sprang from a desire to change long-term care from an institutionalized medical model to one based on an environment that feels like home for residents,” said Jane CONTINUE ON PAGE 10

Some Vancouver community centre programs to restart in September
