Vancouver Fringe Festival 2025 Program Guide

Page 1

We present on the traditional, unceded, and occupied territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. These Coast Salish peoples have lived in the area we now call Vancouver since time immemorial. The Coast Salish used this land for traditional purposes such as hunting, gathering, travel, and everyday living and cultural activities. The area we now call ‘Granville Island’ was built on a rich sandbar in an area called sen̓áḵw that served as a place of sustenance. Greetings!

Welcome to the 41st Vancouver Fringe Festival. I am so glad you’re here.

The Fringe is a place for extraordinary stories and incredible art. We are a place for independent artists to thrive and for barriers to be broken down. This year, we are welcoming 12 first-time Fringe artists and plenty of familiar faces. With 87 shows to choose from, there will be something for everyone.

This year we are thrilled to launch the Kids Fringe, two days of free programming for children and families, inspiring the next generation of Fringers.

We live in a world that can feel disorienting and increasingly polarized. Our daily lives offer so little space for moments of respite. I hope your time at the Fringe gives you a chance to see something truly spectacular, and to step outside your own reality.

Keep on Fringing,

Fringe isn’t just a festival. It’s a movement that champions independent artists and makes artistic expression possible. It’s art for everyone, by everyone.

The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) powers this movement across North America. With 32 member festivals, we create unmatched opportunities for artists to take creative risks, connect with audiences, and build sustainable careers without barriers.

Fringe is where anything is possible. Fringe is where stories spark change. In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, Fringe is the answer.

Consider this your enthusiastic invitation to see a show (or five! or 10!). Every ticket you buy, every artist you champion, and every dollar you donate keeps this movement alive for generations to come.

Fringe is about participating in something bigger. If you want to shape the future of independent artists, please: join the movement!

Happy Fringing,

Megan Dart (she/her)

How to Fringe

What Is the Fringe?

The Fringe is a performing arts movement which began in Edinburgh in 1947. Fringes came to North America in 1982, first to Edmonton, AB, and then to Vancouver in 1985. Fringe Festivals are uncurated, meaning artists are not selected by the presenters. Instead, artists are chosen through a lottery draw.

Fringe Festivals serve as an inclusive space for all artists, whether emerging or established, providing a plaform for them to showcase their work. We aim to be a home for artists and audiences alike and to create space for art, joy, community, and belonging.

How to Book Tickets

Tickets go on sale on Aug 5 and can be purchased online or by phone at 236-978-6315, Monday to Friday from 11 am to 4 pm. During the festival, in-person sales are also available at Festival House, 1398 Cartwright Street on Granville Island, with box office hours from 4 pm to 10 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 10 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are not available for purchase at performance venues.

The ticket prices listed in this guide have been chosen by the artists and include a $5 ticket fee that covers the costs associated with selling you your tickets. The Fringe returns 100% of the base ticket price to artists.

Love sharing the Fringe and discounts? The MultiBuy Pass is the answer. Buy 6-show, 10-show, or 30-show Passes and share with a friend. Find out more at vancouverfringe.com/multibuys.

Fringe+

Want to get the most out of your Fringe experience? Fringe+ is an add-on bundle of early-access perks and special discounts, including a free ticket for you to bring a friend to their first Fringe show. After all, theatre is better when shared.

We know entertainment in Vancouver isn’t cheap, but Fringe+ lets you make the most of every night (and day) of the Festival. Find out more by going to vancouverfringe.com/fringeplus.

Can I Arrive After a Show Starts?

You may not be able to enter a show if you arrive after the time listed on the program. Please aim to arrive at the theatre at least 15 minutes early.

Accessibility

We work with our community to identify, prevent, and remove as many barriers as we can. If you have questions, please go to vancouverfringe.com/accessibility or get in touch with us by emailing administration@vancouverfringe.com.

Getting to the Festival

This year, the Vancouver Fringe is taking place almost entirely on Granville Island. There are many ways to get to the Island, and we’re thrilled to be working with CMHC Granville Island and False Creek Ferries to support active and public transportation to the Island.

Bike Valet parking, located behind Granville Island Brewing, is available thanks to CMHC Granville Island and grant funding from the BC Cycling Coalition and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. It operates from 10 am to 11 pm Friday through Sunday, and from 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday. This is a safe and free way to store your bike while visiting Granville Island.

The #50 bus route arrives at the entrance to Granville Island from Waterfront Station (passing through downtown along Granville Street) or from Olympic Village Station. For detailed route info, see TransLink’s Trip Planner: translink.ca/trip-planner.

False Creek Ferries operates every 5–15 minutes daily, rain or shine, with stops at Sunset Beach, David Lam Park, and Yaletown. For operating hours and detailed route info, check their website at granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

Limited pay parking is available on and around Granville Island. And don’t miss the shows at Little Mountain Gallery in Gastown, easily accessible by public transit.

Tip the Fringe

When you Tip the Fringe, you help us cover the artists’ costs and sustain the Fringe for years to come. We are dedicated to supporting artists with costs like staging, seating, lighting and sound equipment, and marketing. Unlike traditional presenting models, Fringe artists keep 100% of the base ticket price. To Tip the Fringe, find our volunteers on Granville Island as you’re coming out of the theatres.

Why Support the Fringe?

The Vancouver Fringe subsidizes 80% of artists’ production costs — which means Fringers like you get to keep going! Support the festival you love with a donation today — find a volunteer with a Tip the Fringe machine or donate at the QR code below.

“ What I love about the Fringe is that it allows artists to express themselves freely... Many solo performances are deeply personal, and with no ensemble to hide behind, it’s raw and brave. I have great respect for artists who put themselves out there like that.”
