A message from Vancouver Pride Society

V

ancouver! The best time of the year is here We are well into the Pride season for 2026 and as always, our community never fails to come together It’s no secret that there is much to worry about in the world; even with the hardship, our community continues to flourish. Pride season is well underway and our community has come alive tenfold This year’s theme is Unapologetically Queer; in a time where people are asking us to shrink, to be more palatable for others, it is our time to show the world who we are Our community is vibrant and alive; our community is unwavering, authentic and empathetically queer From all walks of life, from all people of colour and cultures, we will be anything less than unapologetically ourselves Pride is only possible because of our community. For all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, from those who have come before us, those who are continuing to fight for a better world, and to those who come, Pride is Pride because of all YOU Thank you to everyone for being who you are and for being unapologetically queer At the same time, VPS acknowledges that our community is not one story, and that not everyone has experienced Pride in the same way Being unapologetic does not mean ignoring complexity; it means continuing to show up honestly, while listening, reflecting, and working toward deeper inclusion, accessibility, and care for one another Looking forward to next year, VPS has much to do The board, newly appointed this past April, is eager to move VPS into a place that the community can rely on We plan to continue increasing community engagement, gatherings to share stories at open houses, roundtables, and for the community to meet the people within VPS Our new office, located near city hall on West Broadway, is ready to welcome everyone The large space, with three 10

floors, can be used by other community members for events throughout the year We happily invite all those interested in using our space to host your events; we at VPS want to uplift and support queer events to amplify pride 365 Shortly after this Pride season, we will be working on updating policies and internal processes, hiring new contractors and staff for long-term roles, while filling vacancies for the board We welcome all individuals who are interested in joining VPS, whether in a volunteer role or in a governance position, and those who wish to support us through donations As these opportunities come up, we will share updates with our members and the community at large Happy Pride everyone! ● Vancouver Pride Board of Directors VanPride Guide

Accesssibility at Vancouver Pride A community commitment

E

ach year, Vancouver Pride Society continues to learn, listen, and adapt in our efforts to make Pride more accessible for everyone. Accessibility isn’t just a checklist—it’s a living, evolving practice shaped by the people who show up, speak out, and ask for more inclusive spaces.

A Dedicated Accessibility Hub at the Roundhouse One of the core accessibility features of this year’s Pride is the Roundhouse Community Centre, which will serve as our central accessibility hub throughout the festival weekend. Located on flat, paved ground and steps away from Yaletown– Roundhouse SkyTrain station, the Roundhouse offers: •A ccessible viewing zones for parade and festival programming • ASL interpretation •M ask-mandatory sections for immunocompromised attendees • Senior-friendly seating •V ocalEye audio description for blind and low-vision attendees • A low sensory indoor space for anyone needing quiet, comfort, or a break from overstimulation

12

This space reflects our belief that accessibility is not only about access, but also about safety, care, and belonging. •A SL interpreters will be present at the Nelson Park stage •R oundhouse Vendors have been placed on flat, paved areas to support mobility device users • Public transportation access is available at all major sites, with the Yaletown/ Roundhouse offering the most accessible viewing area for the parade •W ater stations, accessible washrooms, and diverse food options are available across multiple event sites • Clear wayfinding signage and maps make it easier to navigate the festival Ongoing Commitments Accessibility doesn’t stop at the event gates. Internally, VPS continues to operate on a hybrid work model, offering flexible hours and digital tools that support a wider range of access needs. Online, we’ve maintained our Userway accessibility plugin on the VPS website to improve usability for all visitors. This year has brought challenges—financially, operationally, culturally, and politically—but our commitment to community remains steady. We know we won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to trying, to listening, and to doing better every year. For the most up-to-date accessibility information, visit vancouverpride.ca/ accessibility or connect with us onsite at the Roundhouse Accessibility Hub. We can’t wait to welcome you. ●

Safety is Pride Taking care of each other this season

P

ride is a celebration, a protest, a family reunion, and a deeply vulnerable act. To show up as your full self in public takes courage. That’s why safety is not a sidebar to Pride. It is the foundation. For many 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, especially trans people, sex workers, QTBIPOC, folks with disabilities, and others who carry layers of risk, safety is about more than just event logistics. It is about harm reduction. It is about protecting each other. It is about building space where joy does not have to come at a cost. This year, we remind you that community care is not just important, it is essential. Pride season can be long, hot, overwhelming, and beautiful. You don’t have to do it all. Take your time. Plan your days with rest in mind. Drink water. Eat something. Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection.

Look for our volunteers in yellow T-shirts if you need assistance getting to a shade tent or emergency services. Pace yourself. That includes emotional pacing. The energy at Pride can be intense. There is music, crowds, movement, and moments of deep feeling. You are allowed to choose what feels safe for your body, your heart, and your spirit. At Nelson Park, there are multiple shade tents or visit the WorkSafeBC tent for cooling towels. This year, Vancouver Pride Society is making serious investments into safety for all of our events. We are proud to be working closely with public safety teams and emergency responders to develop stronger infrastructure that supports both celebration and caution. Look for teams from Safeway handing out free water and snacks along the parade route. ●

Be safe. Be seen. Be proud. See you on August 2 at the Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival. For resources on workplace health and safety, visit worksafebc.com. VanPride Guide

Unapologetically Queer The summer sky; is burning bright, And Davie Street; is drowned in Light. The banners wave; the anthems play, To spark a nine-day; grand display. From East Side parks; to West End shores, The City opens; wide its doors. The Disco beats; and Drag shows rise, Beneath the clear; Pacific skies. A sea of colour; starts to grow, To give the world; a brilliant show. The ocean roars; the system shakes, With every single; stride we make. The marchers fill; the crowded street, Where old and; brand-new families meet. No longer forced; to hide or fear, We stand unyielding; “Bold” and “Queer”. We honour those; who paved the way, So we could hold; our heads today. With Strength and Love; we carry on, From twilight shade; to early dawn. 20

The Grand Parade; begins to roll, With Joy and fire; in its Soul. A bold and bright; majestic sight, Where every person; claims their right. So let the music; lift your voice, And let the vibrant; World rejoice. The flags are high; the Spirit gleams, For this fair city; and our Dreams. —by Randall Russell VanPride Guide

VITALITY / IDENTITY / COMMUNITY

THE NEW ERA OF AUTHENTIC MEN’S HEALTH When you reclaim your vitality, your entire circle wins. Men’s health isn’t about fixing what’s “broken.” It’s about becoming more you—stronger in your body, clearer in your mind, and free to live on your own terms.

THIS ISN’T JUST MEDICINE— IT’S A MOVEMENT. 28

VanPride Guide

BE WELL. BE YOU. BE FREE.

SELF-CARE AS THREE DECADES OF PERSONAL FREEDOM GENERATIONAL CARE Taking care of your health is one of the most radical acts of self-respect. It’s how you build the energy to reach your goals, the confidence to set boundaries, and the resilience to love fully— yourself and others.

For over 30 years, we’ve partnered with men across every stage of life. Our experience helps us listen, personalize and deliver care that evolves with you—so you can thrive for decades to come.

BREAKING THE SILENCE

THE ORGANIC RIPPLE EFFECT

For too long, men— especially in our communities—have been taught to tough it out and stay quiet. But silence costs us: our relationships, our confidence, and our future. It’s time to speak up. seek support, and rewrite the script.

When you feel better, everyone around you wins—your partner, your family, your friends, and your community. Your well-being creates ripples that inspire and uplift, building a healthier, stronger network of support.

THE CALL TO ACTION

Gold standard care requires an ongoing relationship, not a transaction. We treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.

You don’t have to wait for tomorrow to start feeling like yourself again. Invest in your health. Break the silence. Claim your vitality. Your best life—and the lives of those who love you—are worth it.

Whether you want to be the best version of yourself or enjoy the best sex of your life, we are here to help you get there. —DR. AARON GOLDSTEIN, MD MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Pride Flashback! Gayblevision to OutLookTV

T

he journey of original gay and lesbian community television began back in 1980 in a show that was then known as Gayblevision, which was produced out of the West End office of Rogers. Gayblevision ran from 1980-1986. In 1988, leading up to the Gay Games in Vancouver in 1990, a small TV group formed locally, combining producers on the Rogers side along with a group of community friends who got together to start planning coverage of the games. The result was a half hour show called Celebration Nightcap. Out of that experience evolved a show called Prism, similar to Gayblevision, as a half hour magazine-style show. It eventually was maneuvered over to the Rogers Kits office, where the name was changed to OutLook TV, with gay and lesbian programming for

a half hour show, once a month, which ran for approximately ten years. Fast forward to 2011 as Vancouver was preparing to host the North American Outgames, and similar to what they did for the 1990 Gay Games, past community producer, Fred Kamperman, along with Shaw community producer, Michael P Keeping, decided to keep the name OutLook TV and launch a half hour magazine-style show. The show aired locally on Shaw as a community access program until changes to licensing redirected funding away from community TV in 2016. From there, the producers moved everything over to the OUTtv network, allowing changes from a mainly local focus, to a more national 2SLGBTQI+ focus. OutLook TV continues to be produced in Vancouver by a dedicated group of volunteers, with volunteer reporters now based across Canada. The show airs nationally with two half-hour shows a month on the OUTtv cable network, which also streams on OUTtv in Canada, USA, Mexico, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and on OUTflix in the UK and Ireland. Stay Fabulous Canada! ● Historical references for this article were sourced from conversations with OutLook TV CoProducer, Michael P Keeping. Globetrotting with Pride Navigating the changing world of 2SLGBTQI+ travel

P

ride season is upon us, and for many 2SLGBTQI+ travellers, Pride celebrations are the starting point for holiday adventures. At the same time, political landscapes vary and evolve around the world, which is why the 2SLGBTQI+ community needs to do the work to seek out safe and inclusive travel destinations while making holiday preparations. Fortunately for us, Vancouver and Canada remain relatively safe travel bets overall, as progressive and welcoming destinations for 2SLGBTQI+ travellers. Pride events take place in destinations from coast-to-coast and span the calendar from May to September, along with a growing number of winter Pride events in ski-related destinations such as Whistler, Jasper, and Mont-Tremblant. Worldwide, relatively safe and welcoming international destinations are within easy access and growing popularity for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians, such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, to name a few. Destinations hosting international 2SLGBTQI+ events often include add-on travel experiences or activities for both attendees and their companions. A multitude of queer travel expos, film festivals, business conferences, cruises and sporting

32

Toronto (above) and Japan (below) are among many relatively safe and welcoming destinations for 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians. Photos courtesy of GayVan.com events take place in locations around the world that should have been chosen with acceptance and safety in mind. Large scale events such as the Gay Games, EuroPride and WorldPride are good examples of this. In 2026, Spain will host the Gay Games in Valencia and the Netherlands will host WorldPride in Amsterdam, for example. A go-to resource to find welcoming destinations around the world is the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA), which was founded in 1983 and is the world's leading network of LGBTQ+ welcoming tourism businesses and destinations. Vancouver has been actively involved with IGLTA over the years and was host to the first IGLTA international conference in 1989, the IGLTA Travel Symposium in February 2000, and IGLTA Global Convention in 2004: www.iglta.org A key rule of thumb to ensure a safe and successful travel experience is to do extensive research beforehand, to know before you go. A Hope for Pride

T

he Vancouver Pride Festival of 2026 is something that’s going to be like no other, with performances by a variety of multi-disciplinary artists There will be vendors selling an abundance of goods and a variety of events for people of different experiences to enjoy. The first time I went to Vancouver Pride I was in awe I was in awe of the sparkles, joy, celebration and the sense of community that was present at every turn during Pride Week People were dancing, laughing and celebrating People made a conscious effort to check in on everyone even if they were not in their initial friend group For that week it was as if social groups did not exist and we were all able to simply be and be the best that we could be I want this joy to continue I want other people to experience this unmistakable energy and continue it for years to come I want to relive this every year and in order to do that I will start off this Pride with “hopes” for everyone during Pride 2026: I hope everyone has at least one event (if not more) that they can go to where a person can be their own authentic self I hope that the community stays vigilant and we support each other to ensure that everyone is as safe as possible I hope people who do not usually come out to Pride, make it out this year to experience the joy and wonder that it can create for people I hope that performers, event producers, DJs, bar staff and management are all treated with respect I hope that people speak to each other with kindness, patience and understanding I hope that there are an abundance of events that have a variety of different accessibility points, so that people can participate in Pride in a way that works best for them I hope that everyone makes a safety plan with your friends or loved ones to make sure all of your needs are met I hope that everyone has access to a fan, drinking water and some environmental shade 36

Photo courtesy of Karmella Barr The word “pride” has different meanings for different people To me, “Pride” is a reminder A reminder to be authentically who you are A reminder to challenge injustice for EVERYONE Unfortunately over the past few years Two-Spirit, trans, queer and gender-diverse people have continued to be a target for forms of systemic oppression. My final Pride hope is actually more of an expectation Every year we put a heavy emphasis on amplifying certain members of our community, but I want to see more support for people that are not being as supported I want to see more people speaking up, amplifying and protecting disabled queer people I want to see more people speaking up, amplifying and protecting Two-Spirit, trans and gender diverse youth I want to see Municipal, Provincial and Federal Governments amplifying and protecting these members of our community beyond Pride month The Pride Festival is one day, but Pride celebration, amplification and protection is 24/7/365. Remember everyone, Pride is rooted in Freedom, Rebellion, Authenticity and Politics It is important to use your voice to stand up for disenfranchised people and to care about things that do not personally affect you directly ● —by Karmella Barr VanPride Guide

Community Partners & Volunteers Pride is built by community.

E

very year, community organizations, grassroots groups, artists, collectives, sports teams, advocates, and local leaders come together to help make Pride more meaningful, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse communities we serve. Your work extends far beyond Pride Week. Throughout the year, you provide vital services, create safer spaces, foster connection, advocate for equity, and strengthen the fabric of our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your leadership, and your vision with

us. Whether you hosted an event, joined the Parade, participated in our festivals, supported community programming, or collaborated behind the scenes, your contributions helped create spaces where people could be seen, celebrated, and empowered. Pride is strongest when it is rooted in community. We are grateful for your partnership, your trust, and your continued commitment to building a more inclusive future for all. Together, we celebrate. Together, we advocate. Together, we create Pride. ●

ride would not be possible without our volunteers! From the early mornings and long days to welcoming guests, supporting performers, assisting at festival sites, and helping our community feel safe and celebrated, our volunteers are the heart of Pride. Pride is powered hundreds of volunteers who come together to create spaces of joy, connection, visibility, and belonging across Vancouver. Your time, energy, and commitment helped bring Pride to

life for thousands of attendees, artists, community organizations, and visitors from around the world. Whether this was your first Pride or your tenth, your contribution makes a difference. Every shift, every smile, every conversation, and every act of support helped create an experience that was more welcoming, inclusive, and unforgettable. On behalf of Vancouver Pride Society, thank you for showing up for community. Thank you for sharing your passion, your care, and your Pride. ●
