IN 20TH YEAR, VMA23 MOST SUCCESSFUL YET NORFOLK, VA | VMA23: The East Coast’s Premier Conference for shipping, ports, logistics, and trade was held on October 4-6, 2023, to discuss “Navigating Routes to Reliability.”

Forty-five speakers provided real-world insights related to international trade, transportation, and logistics. This year’s symposium doubled the number of industry exhibitors attending and featured several networking opportunities. Attendees applauded the accessibility they had to industry leaders and the opportunity to share ideas with colleagues.

Marc Marling, Chief Business Officer at Cargomatic, Peter Friedmann, Executive Director at Agriculture Transportation Coalition, and Jonathan Gold, Vice President, Supply Chain and Custom Policy at National Retail Federation opened the conference with a Fireside Chat, “On the Mind: Unpacking Shipper Ruminations” discussing the current state of the industry, the present mindset of shippers, takeaway from 2023, and how they are planning for the future.

VIRGINIA MARITIME ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES LEADERS IN MARITIME NORFOLK, VA | On October 5, 2023, the Virginia Maritime Association’s (VMA) 103rd annual Maritime Banquet returned to celebrate the progress of Virginia’s ports and associated supply chain industries, as well as the contributions of specific individuals.

Before an audience of approximately 850 industry executives and dignitaries gathered at the Hilton Norfolk|The Main, the VMA presented its 2023 “Distinguished Service Award,” “Port Champion Award,” as well as a resolution celebrating Women in Maritime.

Distinguished Service Award The “Distinguished Service” award is bestowed to industry leaders who demonstrate extended involvement and readiness to assist the Maritime Industry in promoting, protecting, and encouraging Virginia’s ports.

The Virginia Maritime Association is privileged to have the service of Scott Wheeler, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bay Diesel, now Bay Power Solutions. Mr. Wheeler founded Bay Diesel in 1982, which specialized in sales, service, and parts for marine application diesel engines and industrial power generation equipment. Under Mr. Wheeler’s leadership, Bay Diesel expanded its footprint to encompass four cities, providing specialized services to the maritime industry on a global scale.

Throughout his career, Mr. Wheeler has not only excelled in business but has also taken on significant leadership roles in various organizations. In addition to his contributions to the Virginia Maritime Association, he has played pivotal roles in WHRO Public Television and Radio, Lake Taylor Hospital, Propeller Club Port of Norfolk, Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and the World Affairs Council.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Wheeler is recognized for his personal and corporate philanthropy, which has positively

impacted the lives of youth, veterans, and his community. He has led by example and used his influence to champion endeavors that strengthen the maritime industry.

The Virginia Maritime Association honors Mr. Wheeler’s exceptional contributions to the maritime industry and his tireless commitment to improving the lives of those in his community with the Distinguished Service Award. VMA extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Scott Wheeler for his “Distinguished Service” and his unwavering dedication to the maritime industry and community. His readiness to assist in promoting, protecting, and encouraging the growth of Virginia’s ports has made a lasting and invaluable impact on the industry.

Port Champion Award The title of “Port Champion” is only awarded to individuals who, without having direct business interests, have embraced the maritime community with a spirit of cooperation and whose actions have substantively improved Virginia’s ports and marine transportation system.

The Virginia Maritime Association proudly announced CAPT Jennifer Stockwell, Commanding Officer of the United States Coast Guard, Sector Virginia, as the recipient of the prestigious Port Champion award for her outstanding contributions to the maritime community and her unwavering commitment to the safe and efficient operations of Sector Virginia.

Under CAPT Stockwell’s guidance as Commanding Officer since 2022, Virginia’s ports have thrived during a period of record growth. Her leadership has played a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and secure operations of these ports, even amidst unprecedented challenges such as simultaneous dredging and construction activities, preparations for increased cruise and offshore wind traffic, and improved coordination between rail and commercial maritime operations.

NORFOLK, VA | Old Dominion University (ODU) is set to further its maritime and logistics initiatives with the establishment of a new School of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Maritime Operations. Approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), this school is set to be fully operational

by October 1, 2023. It builds upon ODU’s legacy of maritimefocused programs, including the International Maritime, Ports and Logistics Institute, which has been nurturing maritime expertise for over three decades.

►The “Ocean Carrier Marketing Outlook” panel brought together the U.S. Presidents of the major ocean carriers who call Virginia their North American Headquarters. George Goldman, Executive Director of Greenabl, Peter Levesque, President and CEO of CMA CGM (America) & American President Lines, Takashi Masuda, President of Ocean Network Express (North America) Inc., and Nissim Yochai, President of ZIM, USA provided valuable insights into the current state and future outlook of the ocean carrier market.

The first day of VMA23 concluded with VMA’s largest mixer of the year at The Market Norfolk at Waterside. Over 600 maritime professionals networked with colleagues, made new connections, and celebrated our industry.

VMA23’s second day started off strong with the “Why Virginia?” panel. Programs Offered: The school will offer a Master of Science degree in maritime trade and supply chain management, graduate certificates in maritime ports and logistics management and supply chain management, and a minor in supply chain management.

Collaboration: The school will actively engage with ODU’s existing interdisciplinary programs and research activities related to maritime and logistics.

Community Alignment: Aligned with ODU’s annual campus theme, “Blue Connections,” the school will respond to community needs and contribute to strengthening the region’s supply chain and maritime capabilities.

ODU’s Vision: The establishment of this school reflects ODU’s vision to be a leading maritime-centric university and a nationally recognized institution for maritime opportunities.

ODU is actively involved in the Hampton Roads Maritime Collaborative for Growth & Innovation, emphasizing the importance of maritime innovation in the region. The creation of this school is a significant step toward realizing this vision.

The search for the inaugural director is currently underway, with Professor Mileta Tomovic serving as the interim director.

This initiative is poised to not only serve the local community but to make ODU a trailblazer in the field, positioning it as a regional, national, and global leader in maritime and logistics education.

ASSOCIATION IN ACTION Simply stated, active VMA members are Better Connected, Better Informed, and Better Represented. This portion of the newsletter provides insights into some of the ways in which the interests of VMA members were Better Represented during the previous month.

Around the port and across the state, September was filled with interactions, tours, and other opportunities to educate current and future members of the Virginia General Assembly about the significance and issues of our maritime and supply chain industries. When the General Assembly convenes in 2024, it will be made up of an unprecedented number of newly elected legislators and will experience a dramatic loss of institutional knowledge. This upheaval will substantially impact the legislative and budgetary decisions made by the General Assembly. VMA remains focused on ensuring that our legislators are well-informed about our industry and that we are well-positioned to work with all our elected leaders for the benefit of our mission and membership.

Working with workforce development and educational institutions to meet the workforce needs of VMA member companies is a strategic priority for VMA. Old Dominion University (ODU) plans to establish a new School of Supply Chain, Logistics, and Maritime Operations required approval from the State Council on Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV). When SCHEV met to consider ODU’s application for the new school, VMA was pleased to attend and speak on behalf of ODU’s application, which SCHEV approved.

Despite endorsement by VMA, the Virginia Port Authority, and others, the Chesapeake City Council denied a zoning change needed for a new 200,000-square-foot cross-dock facility which would have supported port-related supply chains and created 200 new well-paying jobs. VMA will continue working to help local officials understand that the desires of their citizens for the quick and reliable delivery of low-cost goods rely on the trucks and facilities that move those goods to their citizens.

VMA was pleased to participate in a port tour conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for officials from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works.

The guests received an up-close education on the dredging and navigational requirements of our port, the connection to national security and reliable supply chains, and the requirements to keep our port operating smoothly and growing.

VMA represents the interests of our port and member businesses on several standing boards, advisory committees, and other venues.

VMA23 CONT. ►The “Growth - Investing in Optionality & the Future of U.S. Rail” panel discussed the current state of the railroad industries, and what investments are being made to enhance network intermodal services. Panel experts, Daniel Ferguson, Vice President of Sales and Markting at Watco LLC (Transportation), Luisa Fernandez-Willey, Assistant Vice President of Policy and Economics at the Association of American Railroads, Bill Rooney, Vice President of Strategic Development at Kuehne + Nagel, Inc., and Shawn Tureman, Vice President of Automotive and Intermodal Marketing at Norfolk Southern Corporation weighed-in on policy considerations to improve safety and fluidity, and how nearshoring trends impact network planning and other enhancements being made to improve the customer experience.

►The final panel of VMA23 was “Navigating the Rebound: Preparing for Freight Demand and Redesigning Distribution Networks” in which the panel discussed a rebound in freight demand. Panelist Sascha Peyer, Senior Director, Head of Transpacific Trade of Ocean Freight Americans at DHL Global Forwarding, Jennifer Polli, Managing Director at ITE Management, Paul Svindland, Chief Executive Officer at STG Logistics, and Daniel Walsh, President and CEO at TRAC Intermodal discussed how to proactively prepare for the next market shift, which areas exhibit the strongest demand, and where we can anticipate hot markets to emerge in 2024.

►The “Powering Tomorrow’s Roads: Unveiling the Future of Electric Vehicles and the Battery Supply Chain” panel honed in on the future of batteries, where breakthroughs in technology and innovation are shaping the landscape of sustainable transportation. The discussion was led by David Capati, Senior Energy and Environmental Analyst at Toyota North America, Steve Irick, Vice President and General Counsel at Seaboard Marine Ltd., Holly Pearce, Director of Logistics at C & D Trojan, and Peregrine Storrs-Fox, Risk Management Director at TT Club Mutual Insurance Ltd. The panelist explored the resources and collaboration required to support increased EV adoption and a seamless transition, from raw materials to charging networks.

At the close of VMA23 Stephen Edwards, CEO and Executive Director at The Port of Virginia®, Anthony Fullbrook, President at OEC Group, and David White, Executive Director at Virginia Maritime Association shared their final reflections of the past two days and their predictions on the 2024 market. “We are really positioned to be a global center of excellence” said David White.

The conference closed with a video premiering VMA24 on October 9-10, 2024.

Following the conference, Virginia Maritime Association held their 103rd annual Maritime Banquet to celebrate the progress of Virginia’s ports and associated supply chain industries, as well as the contributions of specific individuals. Over 850 industry executives and dignitaries gathered at the Hilton Norfolk|The Main.

VMA presented its 2023 “Distinguished Service Award” to Mr. Scott Wheeler, the “Port Champion Award” to CAPT Jennifer Stockwell, as well as a resolution celebrating Women in Maritime.

On Friday, VMA23 attendees departed ways after a beautiful day of golf at Greenbriar Country Club.

The celebration continued at the Banquet Nightcap at Grain.

VMA’s members Vinny Di Costanzo and Mike Coleman took the stage for a fantastic set!
