THE MAGIC AND MYSTERY OF THIS YEARS’
HOLIDAY CRAFT, FOOD, AND GIFT BAZAAR
HOLIDAY CRAFT, FOOD & GIFT BAZAAR 2026 EVENT DETAILS Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, 2026 Rhema Ninowski Event Center | Broken Arrow, OK Free Admission and Parking
A glimpse of what you’ll see, smell, and taste at the Holiday Craft, Food, & Gift Bazaar, October 9 & 10, 2026 at the Rhema Ninowski Event Center in Broken Arrow. BY VALUENEWS.COM
T
here’s a reason Oklahomans keep flocking to this local holiday craft and gift bazaar year after year, fall leaves, twinkle lights and all: no algorithm on earth can replicate the thrill of standing in front of a handcarved bowl and hearing the maker light up as they explain which tree it came from. There’s a certain mystery to it, too. You never know what you’ll find until you turn down the next row of tables. Across the state, small vendors like F.Thompson Art of Tulsa, Tall Oaks Wood, A & M Custom Jewelry, Bee Spectacular Studio, Carters Wood Creations of McAlester, Kristrinas Kreations, amazing bakers and food makers, and Serendipity Soaps bring that electric, one-of-a-kind connection to life, one table at a time. It’s an absolute joy to experience, especially in anticipation of the fall and holiday season.

Better Than Online For vendors, bazaars are more than sales opportunities. They’re passion projects and pure community energy rolled into one. F.Thompson Art has spoken openly about the exhilarating trial and error of learning, festival by festival, what makes an audience stop in their tracks. That’s an experience no online storefront could ever teach us openly or as vividly. Carters Wood Creations turns lathe-spun bowls, duck calls, and travel mugs into instant conversation starters, each piece practically buzzing with the visible mark of a craftsman’s hand. Sharing the story with your special gift adds excitement to your gesture and is especially delightful to the receiver. These are relationships built face to face and full of genuine excitement: a soap maker lighting up as she describes her essential oil blends, a jeweler thrilled to adjust a custom piece on the spot, a woodworker beaming as they point out the grain that makes one bowl truly unrepeatable. Shop Without a Search Engine For attendees, that’s the thrill of it! Online shopping offers convenience, sure, but it can’t come close to offering texture, scent, and story all at once. At a bazaar, you get to breathe in a bar of Serendipity Soaps before you buy it, watch a jewelry setting catch the light exactly right, or ask a wood artisan how long a piece took to shape — and see their face light up when you ask. You don’t just leave with a gift; you leave buzzing with the memory of who made it and why, and probably a great story to tell. And here’s the best part: many of these incredible makers exist almost entirely offline and have little to no searchable footprint, no website, no algorithm-fed feed popping-up their way. You cannot scroll into them. You can only find them by showing up, wandering down a row of tables, and letting curiosity lead. That’s what makes the discovery so thrilling, it feels like striking gold, not getting served an ad. In an age of same-day shipping and faceless marketplaces, the Holiday, Craft, Food, & Gift Bazaar offers something wonderfully rare: a lively, person-to-person adventure where craftsmanship, story, and community mix in one unforgettable afternoon, and where the very best finds are the ones no search engine could ever have handed you. Plan to see, touch, feel, and meet makers, creators, crafters, bakers, and local at this years’ Holiday, Food, Craft, & Gift Bazaar, October 9 – 10, 2026 at the Rhema Ninowski Event Center, 1367 W. Kenosha St. in Broken Arrow. Parking and admission are free. You’ll want to bring the little ones too: on Friday, Oct. 9, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. they can meet Cinderella, and on Saturday, Oct. 10 the kids can visit Elsa from 10 a.m to 3 p.m., and The Magician from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. These are fun selfie opportunities!

2027 MEDICARE BY VALUENEWS.COM
A
s Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period approaches, Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2026, Everything Insurance Group of Tulsa is reminding Oklahoma seniors that the plan they relied on this year may change significantly for 2027 or may no longer be available in their area, and that a few minutes of review each fall can prevent months of frustration. Oklahomans have numerous Medicare coverage options, including Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and Part D prescription drug plans. Available options vary by county and can change from year to year, making an annual coverage review especially important.
Common Sense Answers That complexity is exactly why Everything Insurance Group, who are family-owned by Alex and Abrina Tarasenko, and an Oklahoma-licensed agency at 1703 E. Skelly Dr. in Tulsa, built its Medicare practice around providing Oklahomans with common sense answers and education rather than sales. “We are the agents looking out for our clients and help them reduce their frustrations by giving honest, well-informed advice for an individual’s needs,” said co-owner Abrina Tarasenko. “Our approach is proactive. Our assistance is nonbiased and presented with the upfront realities of where things stand in 2027. Some Medicare beneficiaries may see significant changes to their current coverage for 2027, and some plans may no longer be available in their area. We help clients understand those changes and compare the Medicare options we represent based on their individual needs. Ultimately, the decision belongs to the client.” Abrina and Alex Tarasenko, owners of Everything Insurance Group have been serving Oklahoma seniors for over 10 years. LOSING PROVIDER OR COVERAGE CHANGES?
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Everything Insurance welcomes seniors to “ask them anything about Medicare coverages in Oklahoma” and receive practical common sense advice, at no charge.
Tarasenko said the goal is never to steer clients toward a single product. “It’s all about a common sense perspective rather than a selling perspective to choices. We set up our clients with choices, explain the differences, and ultimately it is their decision.” Advantage plan or Medicare Supplement plan? Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans can change from year to year. Premiums, benefits, provider and pharmacy networks, drug formularies and cost-sharing can change for the new plan year, even when a plan’s name remains the same. A provider or pharmacy that participates in a plan’s network in 2026 may not participate in 2027, and prescription drug coverage or costs may also change. That’s why reviewing coverage each year can be important. “Our service revolves around what Oklahoma seniors need to know,” said co-owner Alex Tarasenko. “We want to provide clear information and practical, common-sense guidance based on each client’s individual needs. Medicare coverage can change from year to year, so we remind seniors not to let the Annual Enrollment Period pass without reviewing their coverage. There is no charge to meet with us and review the Medicare options we represent.” Everything Insurance Group represents a broad lineup of Oklahoma licensed carriers, giving clients side-by-side comparisons of Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and Part D prescription drug plans rather than a single company’s offerings. Consultations are offered in person at the Tulsa office or by phone, with client information kept confidential throughout. A Full Service Insurance Agency Alongside its Medicare work, Everything Insurance Group also
assists Oklahomans with home, auto, life and business insurance. The agency was named a 2026 Value News Best Choice Gold Seal Honoree for Home, Auto & Business Insurance and was voted twice as Best Insurance Agent in both 2025 and 2026 and 2026 Best Insurance Agency in the Tulsa World Best of Tulsa contests. The Tarasenkos say that same neighborly approach extends beyond the office. Everything Insurance Group is a sponsor, donor and volunteer partner of BeHeard Movement, the Tulsa nonprofit that operates a mobile drop-in center providing showers, laundry, haircuts and case management to people experiencing homelessness. Owned and operated locally by the Tarasenkos for more than a decade, the agency counts many of its Medicare clients as returning customers who come back year after year for the same patient, unhurried guidance. For seniors who have not reviewed their coverage recently, the Tarasenkos say now is the time to begin, before the December 7 Medicare Annual Enrollment deadline. Everything Insurance Group does not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 8 organizations which offer 70 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.

THE PEACH COBBLER FACTORY
COMES TO TULSA
TWO SISTERS, ONE LEGACY BY VALUENEWS.COM
T
wo sisters who share the love of food and family shape this delicious new shop in Tulsa. Natasha spent over 22 years as an Army combat medic; when she and her sister, Angela Person, picked a date to open their new dessert shop, only one made sense: Veterans Day. On Nov. 11, 2025, the two opened The Peach Cobbler Factory in Tulsa at 81st St. and Hwy. 169, turning the holiday into the start of a family legacy they hope will carry through their children and grandchildren. “We chose to bring The Peach Cobbler Factory to Tulsa because we wanted to do something very different,” Angela said. The Peach Cobbler Factory is a loved dessert franchise built around warm, made to order cobblers and Southern banana pudding, a change of pace for the Tulsa dessert scene. The sisters wanted Northeastern Oklahoma to be among the first in the region to taste it.
The Path to Peach Cobbler Angela’s path started young. In high school, she took a job as a crew member at a local McDonald’s and stayed 30 years, climbing steadily through hard work until she was named Director of Operations. That drive carried her into this new venture. The idea to own a franchise took the sisters to Florida for Discovery Day at The Peach Cobbler Factory headquarters. “It was hurricane season when we were invited to Discovery Day,” Angela recalled. “After the interview process, we were approved and made
the decision to move forward.” The leap was intimidating at first, she admitted, but the sisters pushed through it together. Natasha and Angela have always done nearly everything together, and their roles reflect a partnership built on trust. At home, Natasha runs the show. At The Peach Cobbler Factory, Angela is in charge. Together, they call themselves best friends first and business partners second. What should dessert lovers order first? The top seller is the peach cobbler itself, a warm, buttery, golden crusted classic bursting with tender, sweet peaches in every spoonful. Close behind is the OG Original Banana Pudding, a rich, creamy, old fashioned Southern recipe layered with vanilla wafers that tastes like grandma’s kitchen. Third most popular is the four item flight, letting guests pick any four cobblers or puddings at four ounces each, perfect for sharing or simply not choosing just one favorite. The menu goes well beyond those favorites. Fresh baked cinnamon rolls are a favorite for hostess gifts, client thank yous, and group events. Guests can also dig into rich cheesecake cups topped with cobbler or pudding, warm churro stix dusted in cinnamon sugar, and thick, indulgent brownies. “Our shakes are phenomenal,” Natasha said. “They are made with banana pudding and cobblers.” The newest addition is the Refresher, a cool, fruity drink that lives up to its name.

COMMUNITY | ELECTION | ROGERS COUNTY, OKL AHOMA
PROVEN LEADERSHIP, PROVEN RESULTS BY VALUENEWS.COM
F
or nearly 12 years, Ron Burrows has brought a steady, practical approach to serving Rogers County as the District 3 County Commissioner. As chairperson of the Board of County Commissioners, he helps guide countywide business with a focus on clear priorities and responsible management. Burrows continues to pull from decades of private sector management and finance experience, including leadership at the Claremore Expo Center and senior retail management roles, to guide his work in county government. His focus remains clear in areas of fiscal discipline, efficient operations, and practical problem solving. “I believe elected officials must deliver results while treating taxpayers’ dollars wisely,” Burrows said. For him, that work starts with transparent decision making, effective communication with county staff, and results residents can see. He has prioritized budgets that protect core services and county employees while making targeted investments in public safety, economic development, infrastructure, and community wellness. Good Budget Sense While supporting efforts that reduce long-term costs to taxpayers and produce better outcomes for citizens, Burrows has strengthened county processes to move projects from concept to completion. “Good budget sense creates more opportunities in many areas that we make decisions on daily. That’s how we build a stronger county,” he said. “County government works best when commissioners can discuss issues in public meetings, disagree respectfully when needed, and still stay focused on serving the public. We each bring different perspectives to the table, but our responsibilities are the same, which is to represent our citizens, support our staff, keep essential services and projects moving, and make decisions that are in the
best interest of Rogers County citizens,” Burrows said. That same practical approach extends to Burrows’ involvement with the National Association of Counties (NACo), where he has presented and received ideas that can be adapted to local and national needs. His committee work gives him opportunities to learn from county leaders across the country, share Rogers County solutions, and bring useful insights back home to benefit Rogers County and other Oklahoma counties. Mental Health Initiatives Among those national conversations, mental health has stood out as one of the most pressing challenges facing counties, along with other issues that continue to shape county government priorities. “Mental health emerged in recent years as a leading public concern and top issue for local governments and counties across the U.S. with rising rates of anxiety, depression, and service gaps that challenged counties and cities to find scalable, accessible responses,” he said. Burrows networked with Erie County (New York) at a NACo conference to learn from their work with a mental health resource app. The Rogers County Commissioners are working together to launch the “Better Together Connect” mobile mental health crisis app. “We look for proven ideas elsewhere and adapt them to fit Rogers County. This mobile app will put immediate and long-term resources in the hands of all our citizens in need,” Burrows said. Infrastructure Maintenance Burrows also advanced a data

driven pavement management process that uses GIS services to inventory and monitor road conditions throughout Rogers County. The system records pavement status and helps prioritize repairs or replacements based on condition and lifecycle, potential cost, and gives him and his road foreman a clearer way to plan projects based on priority and funding. The goal is to make road safety, pavement life, and limited resources easier to manage. “With the number of road miles in District 3, it is not realistic for us to personally drive, record, and document every condition on every road. This system gives us an efficient, data driven way to identify needs, set priorities, and make the best use of limited road funding,” he said. Infrastructure work is about more than fixing one road or filling one pothole, he added. It is about having systems, equipment, and responsible budgeting in place to respond to everyday needs while planning larger projects. Burrows said Infrastructure needs are substantial; the pavement system has identified $30-40 million for repairs on critical roads and bridges in his district. “The one-penny sales tax generates $4 million annually
per district for road repair, equipment, and payroll. The district receives a large volume of work orders annually, limiting road improvement capacity to about 20 miles per year of new road surface. To give more insight into those efforts, since 2022, District 3 has processed 3,115 work orders. Some requests remain “open” because they are bundled into larger road rehabilitation projects and remain active until the broader project is complete. Work volume is also seasonal, with peak activity typically occurring in the first half of the year. District 3’s infrastructure work is spread throughout the district, with the highest volume of work orders originating in Inola (680), Claremore rural (505), Verdigris (448), Inola rural (312), and Catoosa rural (251). Potholes and mowing related tasks remain among the most frequent service categories, along with culvert installations, culvert evaluations, and road repairs. Road Safety Initiatives “Every completed work order represents a real issue for a citizen, and our goal is to handle those needs efficiently, safely, and in a way that makes the best use of taxpayer dollars,” Burrows emphasized. “Public safety is our year-round priority, and that includes keeping our roads clear and visible. During the spring and summer, vegetation grows faster than our crews can mow, which creates visibility hazards.”

continued from page 23 To address this, Burrows joined other counties and the state to implement a targeted vegetation management program using Shuterra, LLC. Shuterra has contracted with over 40 counties and manages 7,500 miles of county right-of-way. While the application may appear unattractive during the initial phase, Burrows emphasizes that this is a sign of the process working. “It’s important for residents to know that the visual change is temporary,” he explained. “As the treatment suppresses invasive Johnson grass and weeds, it creates the space for native Bermuda grass to take over. After a few rainfalls, the Bermuda grass thrives, creating a much cleaner, more uniform look. Not only does this enhance road safety and driver visibility, but it also saves a significant amount of taxpayer dollars by reducing the need for constant, labor-intensive mowing.” To prepare for winter weather, District 3 invested in brine equipment and operating routines that allow crews to treat miles of county roads days before storms arrive at a fraction of previous costs. “The goal is to be prepared before the storm hits. With the brine program, our crews can treat more road miles in advance, improve safety for drivers, and save taxpayer dollars at the same time,” he said. Proactive Infrastructure Management He added, “Responsible budgeting means planning beyond today’s needs and making decisions that strengthen the county for the long term. Looking ahead will always bring new challenges, but looking back shows the importance of having clear strategies, steady planning, and practical systems in place.” For Burrows, the progress District 3 has made reflects not only better processes, but also the commitment of the crews carrying out the work every day. “When I look back at where we started and compare it to the volume and complexity of the work we handle today, I’m incredibly proud of our team’s performance. We aren’t just reacting to problems; we’re proactively managing our infrastructure. Whether it’s a quick repair or a long-term rehabilitation project, every work order represents our commitment to keeping Rogers County moving safely and efficiently.” Opioid Abatement Program Burrows’ major accomplishments and initiatives in opioid abatement, fiscal stewardship, economic development, and regional partnerships help shape the county’s growth in several areas.
The City of Claremore’s and Rogers County’s Opioid Abatement program is now in its third year of operation. Supported by a three-year grant and multiple funding sources, the project achieved maximum-tier funding of $1,050,000. Through agency partnerships and contract awards, the program strengthens accountability and service delivery. It also expanded GED and high school equivalency programming in the county jail, beginning in March 2025, which has served 86 students with an 80% pass rate across 44 tests. Programming has also expanded into sober living homes, with plans to add classes at Live Free using opioid settlement dollars. The partner’s opioid abatement strategy is a comprehensive framework designed to combat the drug epidemic through evidencebased prevention, treatment, and resource distribution funded by national settlements. Managed by the Oklahoma Opioid Abatement Board, the state provides critical grants to local subdivisions to support holistic initiatives such as expanding Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), increasing naloxone access, and investing in long-term stability through supported employment and housing. “We are committed to using these settlement funds to create a real, measurable change in our community. By prioritizing these evidence-based programs, we aren’t just treating the symptoms of the epidemic; we are building a foundation of support, education, and stability that gives our citizens a genuine path to recovery and a better future,” he said. Burrows Service and Committee Work: • Numerous Oklahoma boards and committees • Representing Oklahoma on the NACo Board • Vice Chair, NACo, Transportation Policy Steering Committee • Vice Chair, NACo International Economic Development Innovation Council • Oklahoma Disaster Recovery Task Force • NACo Veterans and Military Service Advisory Council Reflecting on his time as commissioner and his hopes to continue serving, Burrows said, “I am grateful for the trust the people of District 3 have placed in me. I asked for your vote this November 3 so we can continue delivering practical solutions, responsible stewardship, and stronger services for the communities I serve.”

L
ong before “spa-inspired” became a buzzword on renovation shows, Tony Sementi was teaching Tulsa-area homeowners a simple truth: a remodel isn’t about the flashiest tile on the shelf. It’s about the life lived in the room afterward. Since 1982, Tile by Tony has grown from a one-man tile business run out of Sementi’s home into a full turn-key remodeling company, handling everything from demolition to the final coat of paint. Today Tony and his wife, Debbie, own and operate the Catoosa-based company with a crew that has stayed with them for up to 20 years. That’s the kind of longevity that shows up in the work. The company carries an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, belongs to the Home Builders Association of Rogers County, and was recently named a 2026 Best Choice Gold Seal Honoree for Tile & Home Remodeling which honored excellence in home remodeling character + customer satisfaction. That longevity matters more than ever. A quick search
for “remodeling contractor near me” turns up dozens of leadgeneration platforms promising pre-screened pros, but the fine print doesn’t always match the promise. In a 2022 KIRO 7 News investigation (https://www.kiro7.com/news/jesse-jones/tonight530-11-are-those-pros-home-improvement-sites-actually-vetted/ ULYXEMG3A5B4RC4NBUDX7BX7ZQ/), reporters found that a couple of prominent nationally advertised home improvement service providers connected a homeowner with painters and flooring workers who turned out to be unlicensed and uninsured, leaving him to cover thousands of dollars in repairs himself. How to Avoid Common Remodel Mistakes Much of what makes a kitchen or bath remodel feel “off” traces back to decisions made before a single tile is set. Ignoring the classic kitchen work triangle — sink, stove and refrigerator — turns cooking into an obstacle course. Choosing a trendy material without asking how it holds up day to day, skimping on circulation

REMODEL space, or picking finishes off a sample board instead of the room’s actual light and layout are among the most common regrets homeowners report once the dust settles. Tile by Tony’s team walks clients through those decisions up front, with itemized, transparent pricing so nothing is a surprise once demolition begins. Clients appreciate their in house design assistance. They also have the option for working with one of their interior designer partners. “If you’re too focused on price, you’ll miss the value,” Sementi has said of the process. “It’s best to come in with a budget in mind.” Classic Style and Spa-Level Bath Retreats That philosophy shows up in the primary-bath retreats the company has become known for around Tulsa metro: large format porcelain tile carried across the wall and into a frameless glass shower enclosure, brushed gold fixtures, and a freestanding soaking tub set as the room’s centerpiece. It’s a pairing that lets a home’s historic character coexist with spa-level comfort — porcelain brings
a texture and movement similar to natural stone but more durable and cost effective. Whether it’s a kitchen built for real family life, a primary bath designed as a daily escape, or a whole-home renovation, Tile by Tony’s approach stays the same: quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design, scaled to fit any budget. It’s proof that when design meets craftsmanship, extraordinary living follows. Tile by Tony Inc. is located at 430 S. Cherokee St. in Catoosa. Taste how easy it is to turn a Wind & Willow dip mix or a Soberdough bread, made with little more than a can of beer or soda, into a fabulous party, game day, cozy date night, or family movie night. Every purchase comes with a special goodie bag filled with product samples and a gift from the Finch. And one lucky BELOW: Stacy Wood, owner of Freckled Finch Home, Baby & Gifts, and her daughter, Ally. RIGHT: Freckled Finch Home, Baby & Gifts has a delightful selection of gifts for all occasions. You don’t need to be present to win! Bring a friend and make a day of it. While you nibble, discover the new brands that make entertaining a breeze. Nora Fleming serveware pairs handcrafted platters and bowls with tiny interchangeable “minis” that pop in to change with every season, a pumpkin for fall and a snowman for December. Add bamboo entertaining ware, cozy throws and pillows, Thymes Frasier Fir, Capri Blue, and Rowe Casa natural products, and your holiday scene is set. “We love surprising our guests and always strive to maintain the most favored items from the best brands all in one place,” Stacy says. Since the move, dozens of beloved baby and kids brands have grown like Itzy Ritzy, Webkinz, RMS squishies, and the latest Jellycat holiday drops. Men will find leather wallets, Mixture Man grooming gifts, and clever stocking stuffers, while Catstudio Oklahoma prints and Inis fragrance charm everyone else. Custom gift baskets are made to order, with finds for any budget, “from $5.00 to $1,500,” Stacy says. 4th Anniversary Celebration, Saturday, December 5 The celebrating continues on December 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as the Finch throws a 4th Anniversary party for the area that made it home. Expect another fun-filled day of delightful snacks, drinks, samples, and giveaways, plus a grand prize gift basket valued at over $200 for one lucky winner. Holiday Scout bags and specialty gift bags will be ready to fill, too. It’s the perfect day to shop for everyone on your list. For Stacy, the joy runs both ways. “My daughter Ally, puppy Buddy, and I appreciate the special joy we receive when customers say ‘That’s perfect!’ or ‘I didn’t know I could buy that brand locally,’” she expressed. “Our purpose is to share an experience with our shoppers.” Come share it with them.

AMERICAN PATIO ENCLOSURES IS YOUR SOLUTION FOR
ALL SEASON LUXURY OUTDOOR LIVING
Their high quality materials and construction are key to enjoying “THE JOY” of your backyard retreat.
BY VALUENEWS.COM
A
s temperatures drop across northeastern Oklahoma, American Patio Enclosures is giving homeowners a way to keep their outdoor living spaces open through the colder months instead of closing them down until spring. The company, founded more than two decades ago by Wes Mathis, has two locations: Broken Arrow, OK and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. Locally, the business is run by his father, Curtiss Mathis, a longtime Broken Arrow business owner, and Curtiss’ wife, Robin, who serve as the area’s sales and installation specialists. The goal, Curtiss said, is “a clean, seamless look that blends with your home,” whether the project encloses an existing patio or builds one from scratch. The company builds custom screen enclosures, motorized retractable screens designed to reduce wind, cold and moisture
while you enjoy your outdoor space. Frames are built from extruded aluminum and paired with commercial-grade fabrics from suppliers including Phifer Suntex and Twitchell Textilene. A Difference You Can Feel Additionally, when you say goodbye to your bare patio, you’ll notice the increased comfort an American Patio Enclosure system creates. This is especially true if you use outdoor fireplaces and heaters, which become more effective because the heat has less competition with the outside air. A Difference You Can See Not all enclosures are built the same, and the difference shows up fast in a harsher climate. Thin, budget mesh screens tear under wind load within a few seasons. Unrated vinyl panels turn brittle

and crack in freezing temperatures. Lightweight aluminum can sag, rust or warp, leaving gaps that are the exact problems an enclosure is supposed to solve. Homeowners who choose the lowest bid often find themselves replacing panels, screens or frames within a few years, erasing whatever they saved upfront. Curtiss said the company’s materials are built to be strong, reliable and low-maintenance, giving customers long-term value rather than a project they will need to redo. Pricing depends on the size of the space, materials selected and level of customization. Curtiss said the company keeps pricing transparent, with clear, upfront estimates so homeowners know the cost before work begins. Beyond comfort, a quality enclosure is also one of the higheryielding outdoor home upgrades. Industry estimates put resale
returns at 70% to 84% of project cost, largely tied to the usable square footage an enclosure adds. Homeowners interested in a free estimate can reach Curtiss and Robin Mathis at (918) 608-2039 or visit americanpatioenclosure.com.

HISTORY | WILL ROGERS | CHEROKEE NATION
HOME OF THE BY KEITH AUSTIN , CHEROKEE NATION TRIBAL COUNCIL 2015-2023
V
ery soon, visitors will once again have the opportunity to experience one of the most important historic sites in the Cherokee Nation. As preparations begin for the annual Will Rogers Birthday celebration in early November, the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch near Oologah is nearing completion of a major restoration, preparing the historic home to welcome a new generation to the place Will Rogers first called home.
Will Rogers entered the Kemper Academy on January 13, 1897. However, finding the strict military discipline at odds with his independent spirit, he ran away in March 1898 to work as a cowhand on Perry Ewing’s ranch in Higgins, Texas, declaring that he was “quitting the entire school business for life.” Photo courtesy of the John and Faith Wylie Research Library at the Will Rogers Memorial, a division of the Oklahoma Historical Society.
White House on the Prairie The stately home overlooking Oologah Lake has long been known as the “White House on the Prairie.” Built in 1875—four years before Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879—the home is being restored by the Cherokee Nation following its acquisition of the property from the State of Oklahoma in June 2023. Although visitors see the home on a hilltop overlooking Oologah Lake today, this is not its original location. In 1960, construction of Oologah Dam flooded the Verdigris River valley where the Rogers home had stood for most of its first century. To save the landmark, the house was moved approximately one mile west to its present location. The original homesite now rests beneath the waters of Oologah Lake. Yet the birthplace ranch is much more than the place where Will Rogers spent his childhood. It was his family’s home. The Rogers Ranch and the Cherokee Nation The ranch was home to Clement Vann Rogers, his wife Mary America Schrimsher Rogers, and their children. Within these walls, the family lived, worked, entertained, celebrated, and mourned. The ranch was the center of family life long Will Rogers Birthplace, Oologah, Oklahoma. CHEROKEE KID The Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch tells the story of a family, a nation, and the foundation of America’s favorite cowboy philosopher.
before Will became known around the world as the “Cherokee Kid.” The story of the ranch is also the story of the Cherokee Nation. The Rogers ranch was made possible by the Cherokee Nation’s system of common land ownership during the nineteenth century. Cherokee citizens were permitted to improve and operate ranches on tribally owned common lands, encouraging agriculture and livestock production while preserving the Nation’s ownership of its homeland. Under that system, the Rogers family built one of the largest and most respected ranching operations in the Cherokee Nation. Rogers Family Legacy Clement Vann Rogers was far more than the father of a famous son. He was a Cherokee senator, district judge, successful businessman, rancher, and progressive agricultural leader. Clem embraced innovation while practicing careful stewardship of the land. His ranch became one of the finest in the Cherokee Nation. From his father, young Will developed a lifelong love of horses and land. Those early lessons shaped both his skills and his character. Mary Rogers was equally important to the family’s legacy. An exceptional hostess, she made the Rogers home a gathering place for friends and visitors. The White House on the Prairie became a center of social and cultural life within the CooWeeScooWee District of the Cherokee Nation. Her wit, and gift for conversation helped shape the personality that would later captivate audiences around the world. The ranch also became Will’s first classroom. Hands-On Education Will did not thrive in a traditional school setting. The classroom did not hold his attention, but the ranch did. There he learned to ride horses and developed the roping skills that would make him one of the world’s most famous ropers. His education
was hands-on—built on observation, repetition, hard work, and mentorship. Will credited his early roping instruction not to his father but to Dan Walker, a man who had been enslaved by the Rogers family before Will was born. After emancipation, Walker remained with the family as a ranch hand and passed along the horsemanship and rope skills that helped launch Will’s career. Those skills carried Will far beyond the ranch. The young Cherokee cowboy took what he learned on the prairie to become one of the world’s most recognizable entertainers and America’s top box-office star for several years. Yet he never forgot his Cherokee roots or the lessons learned at home. The Legacy of Oklahoma’s Favorite Son The preservation of the birthplace reflects a long-standing commitment to history. Members of the Rogers family gifted the property to the State of Oklahoma to preserve the legacy of the Cherokee Kid, later known as Oklahoma’s Favorite Son. In June 2023, the Cherokee Nation assumed ownership, ensuring the story continues for generations. Although celebrated as Oklahoma’s Favorite Son, Will Rogers never actually lived in the State of Oklahoma. By statehood in 1907, he had already left Indian Territory to pursue his career. His childhood and formative years unfolded within the Cherokee Nation. As restoration nears completion, the White House on the Prairie begins a new chapter. More than a birthplace, it is a family home. More than a museum, it is a place where the stories of the Rogers family, Cherokee ranching, self-government, and one of America’s most beloved figures come together. As Will Rogers’ birthday approaches each November, there is no better place to reflect on his life than where it began—on the porch overlooking beautiful Oologah Lake. EDUCATION | TREATING FOCUS ISSUES | OWASSO, OKL AHOMA
MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY REBUILDING FOCUS, ONE BOW AT A TIME Screens cut attention to 47 seconds. Martial Arts Academy in Owasso is betting one-hour of phone-free minutes can undo it. BY VALUENEWS.COM
A
ttention on a single screen has fallen to 47 seconds, down from about 2 1/2 minutes in 2004, according to two decades of tracking by University of California, Irvine professor Gloria Mark. Children absorb the hit hardest. Common Sense Media’s 2025 census found kids ages 5 to 8 average 3 hours 28 minutes of screen media daily. Diagnosed anxiety among U.S. adolescents rose 61%, from 10.0% to 16.1%, between 2016 and 2023, National Survey of Children’s Health data show. The trends are connected. Fragmented attention starves kids of practice at what makes social settings survivable: eye contact, sitting through silence, recovering from a mistake in front of other people. Online, a mistake can be deleted. In a room of peers, it isn’t. Focus As A Trainable Skill Martial Arts Academy in Owasso treats focus as a trainable skill. Founded in 2003 by Chris Velez, owner and chief instructor, it trains ages 4 through adult in blocks where phones never reach the floor. “During the class they don’t have the option of being distracted by technology,” Velez said. Students hold “laser beam focus” for 10
to 20 minutes, immersed in the action being taught. Structure starts at the door with a bow and a “Yes sir” or “Yes ma’am.” “The strengths are built from the inside out, and from the minute they walk through the door and throughout, they are intentionally focused,” Velez said. Three Steps To Discipline Discipline builds slowly, on three steps: be calm and listen, watch the demonstration, perform the move. That is the opposite of the fast-fast-fast pace students know, and Velez said it converts into performing instinctively under pressure. The method has evidence behind it. A randomized trial of 240 British schoolchildren ages 7 to 11 found 11 weeks of martial arts training improved teacher rated attentional control and reduced conduct problems versus a standard gym class control group. Tapping Dormant Potential Velez, teaching students of all ages for more than 27 years, said students are not ridiculed when they address the group, and they find that failure is survivable. “Potential lies dormant until demand is placed on potential,” he said. “In here we call them Black Belts. Out there they are known as leaders.” Families agree. One reviewer wrote that Velez “knows how to connect with them, keep their attention, and make classes both fun and educational.” An eight year student credited training focused on “setting goals, inspiring leaders, and developing strong personal character.” Next step for parents: Call to schedule a private introductory lesson.

reat stories change lives, bringing real events into focus. Great stories remain in our heads for days, weeks or even years. Great, memorable fiction is often more evocative than the actual event it describes, motivating its reader to investigate the real story behind the novel. The Council for Holocaust Education will present a reading of Address Unknown during a commemoration of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. The timeline begins November 9-10, 1938, Germany essentially declared war against German and Austrian Jews. Riots ensued, destroying synagogues, Jewish businesses, terrorizing Jewish families and even sending men to concentration camps. The Kristallnacht commemoration takes place on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Congregation B’nai Emunah, 17th and Peoria in Tulsa. The commemoration is open to the public, without charge. The Council asks those who are attending to register at www. tulsagogue.com/Kristallnacht. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Address Unknown Address Unknown, a novel of pen pals writing to each other as world events are beginning to change, challenges what we and the two pen pals believe to be true or not true. Published in 1938 by Kathrine Kressman Taylor, “Address Unknown” disturbed American readers to such an extent that the first printing of the book sold out. Even Readers Digest’s reprinting of her novel sold over 3 million copies. Address Unknown begins in November 1932 with a letter from Max living in San Francisco to his friend and business partner Martin living in Munich, Germany. Max’s first correspondence is a chatty letter about what is going on with him, congratulating Martin on his new home, providing information about their

art gallery business in America, and ending with the sentence, “Fourteen years since the end of the war!” “What war?” the reader asks. World War I, a war that Germany lost and from that loss Germany never recovered. The two men share letters for nearly 2 years. Their correspondence becomes increasingly dark and unfriendly. Max warns Martin about the new German leader Adolf Hitler and what Max hears is happening in Germany. Martin rejects Max’s warning, choosing instead to fully embrace the new Nazi regime. He dismisses Max’s fears, choosing his own social status and personal safety over their friendship and basic human decency. In rejecting Max’s warning, Martin triggers a terrifying sequence of letters, ending with a demand for Max never to write again. Betrayal on the part of both Max and Martin builds toward a lethal and haunting ending. Tulsa well-known actors, Tom Berenson and Kurt Harris will play Max and Martin, as the characters correspond during 19321934. The actors will present a staged reading of the book. The Council for Holocaust Education The Council for Holocaust Education has provided Holocaust programming and education to teachers and students in middle and high school for over 30 years. The Council encourages a society that embraces the study of the lessons learned from the Holocaust to cultivate critical thinking, confront prejudice and inspire a shared commitment to human rights.
