Most of the time folks think about generosity as giving away things or money. Generosity actually means lots of things. The kind of generosity I am talking about here can take the form of encouragement, forgiveness, being deeply present for a friend during a difficult time, giving away the credit for an idea or success, giving a powerful voice to someone who feels powerless, recognizing the strength and character of another, the gift of your time, and yes, sometimes giving money or resources anonymously, with no need for recognition.

I have worked on oodles of boards for charitable organizations over the years. We raised lots of money and that’s great. However, I have learned that true generosity is a different animal altogether. It comes from an inner fire to make a difference in the world, to step up to the plate when there is a pressing need and commit to doing what we can to help. True generosity changes the life of not only the receiver but also the giver.

This generosity can change our world.

A few years ago, Ken (my husband)

and I created a program called Character Coin. The idea was to watch for folks doing something kind or positive and give them a Character Coin. The giver was to catch someone doing something good, give them the coin, tell them why, and ask them to pass it on! It’s a pay it forward type of idea. We minted 30,000 of these coins and gave them out to teachers, kids, city leaders, and service men and women. What happened next truly changed our lives and how we saw people and our community. We heard stories about coins being passed from hundreds of folks both young and old. We heard the impact that it made on their lives.

We were blessed to witness what happens when one person simply recognizes the strength and character of another. It was especially incredible to watch how

contagious this generosity “of recognizing another and giving a compliment” was. Just last week, we had someone call the office requesting another coin to give out to someone. The story they told us warmed our hearts all over again.

Life happens. Sometimes it happens according to plan.

Occasionally, an unforeseen rain shower pours down – a busted water pipe, a broken down car, a job loss.

Though we cannot forecast the unexpected expenses that pop up after a downpour, we can open an umbrella to shield us from dipping into debt.

Tara Depperschmidt, of RCB Bank, and her husband use a simple strategy to build their rainy day fund for emergencies. It’s based on a single principle: pay yourself first.

“When my husband and I first got married, he was in school and we were living payday to payday,” said Depperschmidt. “We knew that if something came up and we needed extra funds, we would be in a great deal of trouble, so we thought we better think of some creative ways to try to save a little bit of money.”

Their creative thinking led to a solution that required only a small change in their budgeting habits. To start, they figured out what their

lowest paychecks would be each payday and used that as the base of their budget.

“If $500 is my base budget and I made $525 on a paycheck, I’d set aside the $25,” said Depperschmidt.

“We already determined we could survive on the $500, so why not pretend we don't have the $25 and save it for an emergency?”

When their paychecks increase, for example to $550, they increase their savings to $50.

“I figure I have managed with $500 all this time, so why not continue to set aside the extra money?”

Depperschmidt admits it’s a mental issue to make certain you put aside the money. When she sits down on payday to look over her bills, first and foremost, she pays herself.

“Saving money is never a fun thing to do but once you really get it in your mind that it’s the right thing to do, and when an unexpected expense comes up and you can cover it debt-free, makes it a great thing to do,” Depperschmidt said.

“Something, anything you save is better than nothing,” said Depperschmidt. “I have two checking accounts and one savings. One checking is my everyday account which I use for everything. The second checking account is used for saving for specific reasons, like an upcoming vacation.

My savings account is for emergencies only, money that I want limited access to.”

Saturday, April 12. The ORU Strongman Competition intends to promote healthier lives and give inspiration to take action. This competition provides participants the opportunity to reach new

personal milestones while competing and socializing in an enjoyable environment.

Departments at the first ever ORU Strongman Competition.” Spectators are welcome to cheer on participants as they compete for the first ever title of “ORU Strongman.”

There will be fun for all ages including a Kids’ Zone obstacle course by Vertical Limit Cross Fit. There will also be an Air Force game zone and a rock climbing wall. In addition, Health Zone of Saint Francis will be offering free health screenings to families and children of all ages.

This will be the fifth collegiate level Strongman competition facilitated by Greg McCann, founder and executive director of Living Well Ministries; Brad Johnson, retired professional Strongman; and Steven Morales, personal trainer.

Previous collegiate competitions include Oklahoma State University and Tulsa Community College.

Greg McCann has served as a health and fitness professional for the last 29 years for the U.S. Peace Corps, Health Zone, and TCC. Brad Johnson held third and fourth place for the United States in the professional Strongman lightweight division over his five-year career. He was featured on the BBC/Discovery Channel TV show “Last One Standing,”

and he is currently working on a non-profit wellness mentoring program for kids.

The competition will be split into three weight divisions: male 210 pounds and above, male 209 pounds and below, and a female division. Weigh-ins will begin at 9 a.m. in the Mabee Center South Lobby and events will start at 10 a.m.

Events include: Culligan water jug load, barrel toss, truck pull (Culligan water truck, TPD Special Weapons vehicle, and TFP Grass Rig), and a medley including farmer’s walk, yoke walk, and tire flip. Finalists will earn their spot in an elimination tug-o-war round. Judging will be based on technique and time/distance for each event.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt with registration.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors in each division. Snacks and drinks will be available for each participant during breaks.

Immediately following the main competition will be separate Team Challenges as police and fire fighters battle out their badges in a heated Tug-O-War and Double Fire Truck Team Pull.

Bringing Kids Back to Nature Camp Courage USA gets children away from TVs and video games to hiking, archery, fishing, swimming and more.

For just about anyone older than 30, childhood memories typically include being sent outside to play with strict instructions not to return until the streetlights turn on.

Of course, for a variety of reasons (technology and safety, for example), these cultural memories are an endangered species. Video games mimic physical activities and sports.

Smartphones offer instant access to movies and TV

shows in the car, at the grocery store and anywhere else a phone signal permeates. It seems like the biggest challenge for parents nowadays is mitigating how much “screen time” children indulge in while gently nudging them to play outside. Camp Courage offers children an attractive outlet combining fun with the outdoors in a positive environment that instills a love for nature, and builds

confidence and friendships for life.

“We provide a way to discover something new,” says Camp Courage founder and director Jennifer Hayes.

She and her husband, Ronnie, started the nonprofit organization six years ago.

Wanting to create a summertime environment where kids “are not stuck inside four walls,” as Hayes puts it, the couple of over 20 years has worked hard to

bring their faith-based youth camp to life.

Camp Courage is a sort of buffet of outdoor activity for children ages 5 to 13. The template, essentially, is to load up a bus full of kids and spend the day immersed in exploration and building confidence. With activities ranging from hikes, fishing and archery to swimming, canoeing and rock climbing, the children find themselves less drawn to the virtual world of TV and video games and, instead, enjoying the real world. At first, some may be intimidated or selfconscious of their abilities, but Hayes observes transformations in the kids every year.

“Everyone has strengths and weaknesses,” she says.

“But sometimes, the one thing we are afraid of is what we are good at.” Hayes has seen children balk at activities like canoeing, only to watch them thrive and fall in love with the activity. With encouragement and guidance from leaders and the small groups, children meet challenges and have fun, building self-esteem and confidence. Such experiences help prepare youngsters for their lives as adults, and parents notice improvement at school as well.

The groups are small, with one leader per eight campers. Parents will be pleased to learn that campers

engage in different field trips every week, so signing their children up for the full summer will not be redundant. In fact, parents can even pick different weeks for children, so no need to choose between summer camp and family vacation.

Hayes is excited about a new addition to this year’s program. Archery will be introduced for the first time at Camp Courage. Certified archery instructors will work with the children, teaching them about the sport and guiding them with form and aim. The sport reinforces Camp Courage themes, especially those of refocusing and concentrating on action.

The symbolism of aiming for the target resonates with the spiritual side of Camp Courage as well.

Registration is now open for summer day camp in Owasso. Children are dropped off at “Base Camp” between 8:30 and 9 a.m., and spend the day making memories. Parents may pick them up between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Before and after care is available also. Sessions run throughout June and July, and into mid-August.

When Tom Fossa was asked by an administrator at DaVita Dialysis to report to her office one day, he thought he was in trouble. “It felt like I was being called to the principal’s office,” says the 75-year-old Claremore resident who has been a patient at the facility for the past five years.

That visit to the administrator's office turned out to be a request for Fossa’s help as the facility’s patient advocate. “When she asked me, I wasn’t certain I could do it,” says Fossa. “But when she said, ‘You have a bubbly personality and you would be perfect for the job,’ I replied

that I would give it a try.”

Fossa never expected to be on this path – not just as a dialysis patient but also as an advocate for other patients who experience the same difficulties he does. “You get very depressed,” he says, “but when I listen to others and answer their questions, it helps me. I feel better because I’ve helped someone and made a difference in their lives.”

Fossa has been undergoing four-and-a-half to five-hour treatment sessions three days a week at DaVita since being diagnosed with kidney failure in February of 2008. “I was scared and worried when I was diagnosed,” he says. “I was afraid I wouldn’t survive.”

According to Fossa, kidney failure is due to one of two things – diabetes or high blood pressure, or in his case, both. Approximately eight percent of the U.S. population has diabetes. One out of three adult Americans has high blood pressure and 31 million Americans (one in six adults) have chronic kidney disease. Many are not aware they have it.

Fossa wants to educate others on the seriousness of kidney disease. “The number

of Americans with kidney disease is 12 times greater than the number with breast cancer. More than 500,000 people in the United States are being treated for kidney failure, including dialysis and transplant patients,” he says, “and each year, nearly 70,000 patients die from causes related to kidney failure.”

Two years ago, Fossa was selected by the Dialysis Patient Citizens (DPC) to represent Oklahoma in Washington, D.C. “I, along with others, went before congressional leaders to advocate for more funding for patients who have had kidney transplants,” he says. “The only way to get off dialysis is to get a transplant. However, the anti-rejection medication costs $20,000 a year for life.

While the government pays for the transplant and for the medication for the first 18 months, after that, you’re on your own. Most can’t afford the medication so their only option is to remain on dialysis.”

Fossa also spends his time working with patients, especially new ones who are afraid, just like he was when he first came to the facility for dialysis. “I speak with new patients who come into the

center, welcoming them and asking if they have any questions,” he adds. “If I don’t have the answer, I tell them I will get it for them.”

“A patient advocate is a crucial part of our team,” says Brandi Payne, facility administrator. “Dialysis is a difficult undertaking and no one should go through it alone. The advocate is available to each patient as he or she navigates the dialysis treatment process. Patient advocates are involved in dialysis at both a local and national level.”

Fossa’s passion for helping other dialysis patients has led to speaking engagements, seminars and continuing education to keep others informed about kidney disease. “I love this work,” he adds.

“Mr. Fossa has a strong rapport with patients at our clinic. In addition to being a volunteer patient advocate, Tom is a dialysis patient,” adds Payne. “He understands quality patient care is our goal, and Mr. Fossa continually advocates on behalf of patients in the name of quality care. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team.”

“After being in banking for many years, I had planned on scaling back a bit, so the hours sounded attractive,” she said. But even though she was well acquainted with

But this sounded fun and I got to be out among people and still was able to talk about banking, which is what I know.”

Now, almost a decade later, Don not only knows about travel, she has become an expert on the subject. As director of Grand Adventures, she has coordinated and led travel groups to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Switzerland, and with those groups has traveled and explored the continental United States as well. In fact, one group will soon head out on a Great Trains and Grand Canyon tour through parts of Arizona, and Don is currently planning the Grand Adventure Club’s Heritage of America Trip for September.

This trip will embark on an exploration of the United States’ middle east coast region, beginning in New York, heading southward through important historical points to Williamsburg, Virginia and then back north

to Washington, D.C. According to Don, being a part of Grand Adventures gives opportunity to many people who like to travel but would not want to go alone, such as widows or people whose spouses do not share their love for travel. “The bus picks the group up at Grand Bank at the beginning and brings them back at the end,” says Don. “We provide a safe way to travel in today’s world.”

The group at Grand Adventures does more than just travel abroad. They often take day or evening trips and local excursions. “We have holiday outings during the Christmas season,” Don relates. “On Valentine’s Day, we took about 50 people to Ti Amo to dinner, followed by a play at the Broken Arrow Community Playhouse.”

Grand Adventures’ office is located at the Claremore Grand Bank branch, but the club is also open to members from the Tulsa and Bixby branches. Don notes that while Grand Adventures is considered a “perk” for the Grand Bank’s aged 50+ customers, she feels she has personally reaped benefits as well. “Both the helpful management and staff at Grand Bank and the Grand Adventures club have been good to me,” says Don. “I’m getting to see so many things – but seeing the enjoyment

of people in the club is my true reward.”

DDay of Health and Fun for Seniors Rogers County Senior Day is set for April 15 at the Claremore Expo Center.

“April Ghouls” is the theme for the 26th annual Rogers County Senior Day, set for Tuesday, April 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Claremore Expo Center. Free health screenings, free lunch, bingo with fabulous prizes and information from local businesses is on tap for the popular event that draws anywhere from 500 to 600 seniors each year, according to Delayna Trease with Summit Physical Therapy and committee president.

“This year’s theme is a

Halloween one and we encourage participants to dress up and enter the contest to win big prizes,” says Trease.

Elvis will be returning by popular demand. The senior citizens always welcome Duke Mason, an Elvis impersonator. Mason, who has performed with many talented groups, including Elvis’s band the Jordanaires, is a multitalented singer and performer, playing guitar, keyboard, bass and drums.

Mason has received

worldwide acclaim for his talent and been featured on numerous television programs. “He has been coming to entertain for many years,” Trease adds. “The seniors just love him.”

Seniors also love the vast array of vendors from home health care, physician services, pharmacies, insurance, finance and other senior-oriented companies that not only provide information for guests but freebies like cups, calendars, pens and medicine holders.

Many of the vendors will offer free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, BMI evaluations and musculoskeletal assessments.

Screenings will take place between 9 and 11:30 a.m., allowing seniors to visit the booths during that period to talk with vendors.

From 11:30 to 2, seniors and vendors will be provided a free lunch of barbeque sandwiches. While enjoying their lunch, seniors are eligible to win 20 to 25 prizes during several rounds of bingo. This year’s grand prize is a recliner.

To earn additional entries for door prizes offered throughout the event, senior citizens are encouraged to bring a canned food item. All cans collected will be divided among area food pantries.

Although the day is filled with fun activities, “the main purpose of the event is to educate senior citizens on health issues and what resources are available to them in our area,” Trease explains.

Pelivan will be available free of charge to transport seniors to the event.

Arrangements must be made in advance by calling (918) 341-7300 to schedule a ride.

Area students from the Claremore High School Junior Navy ROTC will be on hand again to serve coffee

and lunch to those in attendance. “We are very appreciative of their help,” says Trease, “They also help us tear down and clean up afterwards.”

She also mentions the generosity of the Claremore Expo Center, which donates the building for their use that day. “The seniors love this day,” she adds. “It is a great day to socialize and interact with people they may not have seen in a while. They also love the free health screenings as well as the fun activities we have planned.”

Approximately 25 vendors are already on board for this year’s Senior Day. However, space is still available for other vendors who are interested in reaching out to this age group in the community. AArt Energy Project Local artists Karl Engel and Heather Hartness are repurposing the old Franklin Hospital into a haven for artists and art lovers.

The word “repurpose” has become popular in the decorating and antique community, as people have begun taking old items and

using them to create new items with new uses. In fact, repurposing is considered by many to be an art form – which makes it all the more

fitting that the old Franklin Hospital building on Patti Page Boulevard and Perdue Street in Claremore will soon be repurposed into a building for artists.

Local artist and craftsman Karl Engel bought the building a couple of years ago and since that time has worked with his partner, Heather Hartness, to clean and prepare the inside of the building for restructure. Karl calls this endeavor the “Art Energy Project” as he and Heather would like to “build a community of artists to inspire each other and create art energy.”

“The Art Energy Project will be a working model for children and artists to see from the ground up how art is made, shown, appreciated and sold – and to grow and support local artists,” Karl says. “Our dream is to provide personal studios for artists to rent, so that artists will have a wonderful place to work with a support team and a gallery to sell from, and the public will be able to meet them and see their works in progress.”

In addition to studios, the building will house an art

gallery, art classroom, and a room dedicated to the history of Franklin Hospital. Both residents and outside artists will be invited to display their work in the gallery. The classroom area will host art classes for children, which is a part of the project that is especially dear to Heather’s heart. “I’m excited at the prospect of working with the kids,” says Heather, an artist who draws and paints.

“Children are so free with their art and aren’t worried about making mistakes, which is how art should be – about freedom of expression, not worrying about if it’s messy or right or wrong.”

The project has been a true labor of love for Karl and Heather, who have worked steadily on clean-up of the building and are now concentrating more on the actual restructuring process.

They plan to preserve as much of the building’s character as possible. They will rework the old wood floor and supplement with salvaged planks where needed. Since they bought the building, they have collected brick from demolished structures to help fill in missing areas on the hospital building. Many new walls will have to be erected inside the building, but they will use as much of the existing skeleton frame as possible and are even leaving some of the old plaster on the walls (some of it with burn marks from a fire from decades ago) for flavor. Even the basement of the building will be put to

good use, possibly as a clay workshop.

The Franklin Hospital was built in 1927 by Dr. F.B. Collins. It was a place where countless babies were born and needed surgeries and other medical procedures were performed. Dr. and Mrs. Collins lived on the first floor, and the second floor was dedicated completely to medicine. A long ramp led from the first to the second floor so that patients could easily be moved. The ramp is still in place and Karl and Heather plan to preserve it.

They also plan to have a book where people can come and write their stories about the Franklin Hospital, so that even more history can be preserved through this project.

Enthusiasm for the Art Energy Project has stretched beyond the local community.

Karl and Heather entered the “Dream Big Oklahoma” contest in the Green Country sector and are among four finalists to receive a $5,000 grant. If they win on the regional level, they will qualify for the statewide competition. Some customers just brake for the fudge and “many look like they’re having fudge withdrawals when they walk through the doors,” laughs Hazel Ward, owner of The Nut House.

With over 18 different flavors of fudge available six days a week, it’s no wonder The Nut House has earned a reputation for the best homemade fudge in the area.

“We will be offering some special fudge for Easter along with chocolate-covered marshmallows,” says Hazel. “We make our own marshmallows which are heads above what you buy at the grocery store. Our confections are fresh with a really nice texture – they’re soft, not stretchy – and they are larger than what you find in a grocery store.” The marshmallow treats will also be decorated for Easter. “They’re great to put in a child’s Easter basket or as a gift to a friend,” she adds.

Other wonderful Easter ideas include chocolate-covered strawberries and Peeps dipped in chocolate and decorated for Easter.

“After dipping them in chocolate, we dress them up like they’re going to church,” says Hazel. “They’re really cute.”

The Nut House also has an assortment of other Easter candy, stuffed animals, jewelry, candles, car charms and items of a spiritual nature that make great gifts or that can be added to a special basket for gift-giving.

At The Nut House, one of the popular

Baskets, which run from $30 and up, are created more for adult gift-giving, according to Hazel. “We offer baskets that are often built around a sentimental item. For example, we’ve had customers bring in the photo of an ultrasound to announce to their family members that they are expecting a baby,” she says. “The cost varies based on the items a customer purchases here to include in their basket.”

While you’re shopping for Easter goodies at The Nut House, don’t forget to check out Hot Mama’s Deli, where you can select from a variety of sandwiches, salads, sides and sweet treats. A lunch combo is offered each day. “We also have daily specials with offerings like beans and cornbread and Hobo Tacos. “All of our food is homecooked,” Hazel adds.

On Saturday, April 5 beginning at 10 a.m., a Day of Tasting is planned with free food sampling of new products available at The Nut House.

“We’ll be offering a variety of new items, including Cowboy Tom’s Gluten-Free Pancake Mixes,” says Hazel. “They are the lightest, fluffiest and most wholesome flapjacks I’ve ever tasted.

They’re easy to make and so yummy.”On Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, The Nut House will host a Consignment Sale in Pecan Hall with a variety of items at great prices.

Hazel adds that customers should not be discouraged by the highway construction going on in front of the business. “It’s not difficult to get in because there’s a turn lane that leads you right into our driveway,” she adds. “We’re open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day but Sunday.”

Up SSaddle for the Rodeo The 9th annual Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo is coming to Claremore April 25-26.

Working ranchers from five states will be competing in exciting rodeo events such as wild cow milking, team penning, cattle branding and bronc riding.

early Oklahoma’s cattle raising economy and the rural traditions of the area, the Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo will begin when the chutes open for action at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Ranch rodeos are a dynamic part of the state’s cultural landscape and help maintain rural values and traditions despite a century of ever-increasing urbanization.

The rodeo invites teams of five to six cowboys from the leading 15 ranches in the Green Country area to compete in the events, providing spectators with on-theedge-of-your-seat entertainment for the entire family.

Claremore’s Green Country Classic Ranch Rodeo is one of only a handful of rodeos sanctioned by the Working Ranch Cowboy Association (WRCA) in the state.

The junior cowboys and cowgirls will also get in on the action when they show off their ranch skills, including doctoring, stray gathering, wild nanny milking, calf branding, sorting and pony bronc riding on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Junior Ranch Rodeo. “These kids are the next generation of ranchers who take cowboying seriously,” says Courtney Gagan, one of the event organizers. “It’s not just a sport for them; it’s a way of life.”

Teams are not only vying for thousands of dollars worth of prizes, but also a chance for an invitation to compete at the WRCA 19th World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas in November 2014. The World Championship includes competitors from all over the United States and Canada.

A local group of ranchers started the GCCRR in 2005 to allow ranchers in Green Country to showcase their talents. The original board of directors, including Lester and Rebecca Gagan, Jerry and Barbie Wright, Burr Gagan, Julie Lamb, Jay Adcock and Ray Blasi, wanted to not only allow ranchers to compete but to also benefit local non-profits. “Over the past eight years, non-profits such as the

Shriners, Gateway Foundation, Cancer for Kids, and this year the Blue Star Mothers, benefit from rodeo proceeds,” adds Gagan.

Currently the board of directors consists of Lester Gagan, Jerry Wright, Barbie Wright and Shannon Adcock. Hannah Bode of Prickly Pear Photography is the official program designer.

It’s no news to those who have seen the houses popping up all over the countryside, but recent statistics have proven it: Rogers County is one of the fastest growing areas in the state of Oklahoma, and Claremore has become one of its most attractive towns for homebuyers. According to Sperling’s Best Places at www.bestplaces.net, a site devoted to analyzing data

about people and places in order to help people choose the best places to live, Claremore’s population has increased 18 percent since 2000, and Rogers County has grown 23 percent in the same period of time. The same site notes that the cost of living is 10 percent below the national average – meaning your money goes a lot further in Rogers County, and this includes when you are buying

a home.

These numbers are not surprising when one considers Rogers County’s positive aspects: easy commuting distance to Tulsa, beautiful setting, rich history, and a rapidly growing university in Claremore.

Nevertheless, the numbers could have been higher had the nation not suffered a housing crash in 2007 and 2008. But local builder and

Countywide Voter Registration Drive The Rogers County Election Board is busy preparing for the primary election on June 24.

Our country was organized on the principles of representative democracy. Our freedoms are not the result of chance; we have them because the founding men and women were willing to pay the price for the freedom of future

generations. There was a time in our nation’s history when the right to vote depended on your gender or color. Today, after extensive hard work and sacrifice of so many Americans, all citizens are guaranteed the right to have their voices heard at the

No right is more precious than our constitutional right to select the people we want to represent us in our city, county, state and national governments. Even so, thousands of eligible Rogers County citizens are not registered to vote.

The Rogers County Election Board is promoting a Countywide Voter Registration Drive in preparation for the June 24th primary election. Groups, organizations, churches, businesses and pro-active citizens of Rogers County will be canvassing the county

during the months of April and May. The Election Board has registration packets still available for those who would like to help get citizens registered.

The number of active voters in Rogers County is just over 40,000. According to the 2010 census numbers there are approximately 65,000 eligible voters. Every two years the registrations are purged and this year we removed over 10,000 voters from the rolls.

We want to go out into the community to attempt to re-energize voters who may be apathetic because of party discontent or other negative issues. Those who have never registered may believe that if they are registered to vote they will be called for jury duty, which is a huge misconception as juries are pooled from the driver’s license database.

Rogers County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Oklahoma.

Those who vote make the decision for everyone who lives here. This voter registration drive can be a simple way you can get involved. We want to help all citizens of Rogers County to reinstate their rights and reengage them in the voting process. Citizen action is the lifeblood of our Democratic Republic! It's easier than you may think.

The Election Board will

provide the tools needed in a voter registration packet. This packet has everything needed to register voters.

Citizens who register should: be United States citizens, be residents of Oklahoma, be 18 years old or older, provide their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number, and sign the form with their own original signature.

During this registration drive, party affiliation changes are not allowed.

Have fun! You are helping fellow citizens fulfill one of their most important civic responsibilities. So congratulations! This is a lot better than doing nothing, right? You are doing something extremely important!

World Malaria Day Is April 25th W Kairos10 celebrates past success and continues its efforts in the fight against malaria.

Malaria is a killer, a killer that claims one child’s life per minute. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012 alone, malaria claimed the lives of 627,000 people, 86 percent of which were children, with a total of 207 million cases reported. These statistics tell us two very important things.

The first – malaria is a vicious disease, and the

second – malaria is preventable and curable.

Malaria is not a disease most Americans are familiar with. It is the name of a faraway sickness of little to no consequence for most of us. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. In America, an average of 1,500 cases of malaria are reported annually, though the disease was eradicated in the 1950s.

Marked by vomiting, body aches, fever, and, if left untreated, death, malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites. Symptoms begin to occur seven to 30 days after infection; if antimalarial drugs have been taken, symptoms may take weeks or even months to manifest, often leading to misdiagnosis.

after periods of dormancy for two to even four years.

Pregnant women and children under the age of five are particularly susceptible.

Researchers have found that the best way to fight malaria is to prevent it.

Mosquito nets, which shelter and protect five people, have proven especially effective.

The problem – in the last year, major distributors have decreased the number of nets distributed, and the death toll has risen. According to WHO, the net distribution total is down 50 percent from 2010. The solution – local nonprofits are raising money to distribute nets in affected areas, and we can help.

Phyllis Morris is one such individual who is helping; together with Katheryn Pennington, they founded Kairos10, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting malaria in Ghana. “This mission is so close to my heart. As a parent, when you see your children suffer, you will do anything to help ease their pain. We are so fortunate to have qualified doctors and hospitals, but so many families in Ghana have to watch their babies suffer and die. I can’t abide by that – not when there is something

that I can do to help prevent the illness,” explains Phyllis, a nurse.

The jewelry is then sold in the United States, and the proceeds are used to purchase and distribute insecticidetreated bed nets. Thus far, Kairos10 has succeeded in protecting over 110,000 people from malaria through the distribution of mosquito nets.
