By Pat Reeder Will Rogers Memorial Museum opened Nov. 4, 1938, three years after the death of the man who still remains Oklahoma’s most recognizable native. Thousands of people dotted the hillside of the Memorial, streets were teeming with horses and floats for a giant parade — and there was gridlock on the highway between Tulsa and Claremore. Will Rogers Days have been observed every year since that date except for early war years. “Today events surrounding November 4, the date of Will’s birth on an Indian Territory ranch near Oologah, remain one of the state’s largest Will Rogers events,” said Tad Jones, Museum executive director. Plans are underway to combine a number of events going on in Claremore and all of Rogers County during Will Rogers Days Nov. 3-6, with Museum activities to return the celebration to the excitement of those days. From the Pumpkin Festival at Shepherd’s Cross and plans for downtown Oologah and the Birthplace Ranch to the J.M Davis Arms & Historical Museum, downtown Claremore and up Will Rogers Boulevard to Art on the Hill and the 19th Annual Native American Festival at Rogers State University,

Will Rogers Memorial’s celebration of Will Rogers Days will be multiday festivities at the Museum and throughout the community. “Will was always about community,” Jones said. “He wrote about coming home to family gatherings and feasts, visiting in downtown Claremore, Oologah and Chelsea, and going to rodeos and ropings.” The Will Rogers Days finale will be a parade down the street named for him in 1948 and the American Cowboys Rodeo Association Finals at the Claremore Expo Center. Palomino Horse Breeders Heritage Foundation, with Todd Branson riding a Palomino, will lead the Sunday afternoon parade. In 1948, the same year a Will Rogers three-cent commemorative stamp was issued, more than 100 members of the Palomino Association rode in the parade on onto the grounds where 69 mounted riders (in honor of Will’s 69th birthday) rode down the steps to the Rogers’ family tomb and placed a wreath. Comanche, one of Will’s favorite mounts, was a Palomino. Branson will ride to the tomb at 12:30 p.m. prior to the parade and with members of the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club; place a wreath at the tomb. Family members, friends of Will, actors, sports

stars, Indian chiefs, politicians, bands, the famous and infamous have participated in Will Rogers Days in the past 78 years. The one constant — every year since the Museum opened, the Pocahontas Club, founded in 1899, has place a wreath at the tomb in honor of the friend and neighbor they accepted as an honorary member. AA Week to Remember Home of Hope, Inc. celebrates National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week By Jessica Wilbourn Home of Hope, Inc. recognized their staff through National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week from September 11th through September 17th to honor the men and women who provide services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our communities. Direct Support Professionals (DSP) include direct care workers, personal assistants, personal attendants, in-home support workers and paraprofessionals. These professionals are the primary providers of publicly funded long-term support and services for people with disabilities. Home of Hope wants to recognize their 300 direct support professionals who help individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible. CEO Ralph Richardson said, “We try to say thank you throughout the year to everyone for all of the outstanding work that they do, but this week gives us the opportunity to really stop and recognize our staff and show our deep appreciation for all that they do.” Direct Support Professional

Week is recognized by the State of Oklahoma Executive department and was given a Proclamation by Governor Mary Fallin. “I’ve been here for 33 years total. It might sound funny, but I really love taking clients to their doctor appointments. We get to visit with each other and the people at the appointments and we really have a good time just being out and about town. I also love how fast paced everything is during the day. You have to really be on your toes, and I like that!” said Sharlotte Shedden, Home of Hope DSP. When Sharlotte was asked what her favorite part of her job is, she said, “The individuals we work with because they really feel like family and you want to take care of your family.” Home of Hope planned fun things throughout the week for DSP employees, including a large raffle for prizes. Entry fee for 100 clays is $125 per individual or $400 per four-man team. Each shooter will receive 100 clays and must provide their own eye and ear protection, a range requirement. Each participant must also provide their own shotgun in the gauge of choice plus four boxes of shot shells. If a shooter desires, he or she may buy up to two mulligans at a cost of $10 each. If you plan to buy mulligans, be sure to bring extra shot shells. And if you’re clueless as to what a mulligan is, it’s a missed shot that, against the rules, a participant is allowed to take again. Or, simply put, a little insurance! Shooters may also participate in an additional shooting event called a flurry. The flurry competition is $25 per shooter. Each person will be given five clay targets released in rapid succession. The obvious goal is to break as many as you can! Prior to kicking off the Sporting Clay Shoot festivities and competition, each participant will be required to attend a Shooter Safety Meeting. Fitness Time for Ladies continues in expansion with equipment, spa facilities and additional classes. By Erica Ludwig Fitness Time for Ladies continues to grow in the next phase of their ongoing expansion. The popular women’s gym, located in the North Park Medical Center on Highway 66 North, will soon be offering ladies double the square footage of their current space with more options than ever before. The ladies only gym in Claremore has been in existence for the last decade, adding more equipment and even moving to their current location in the last five years. Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka says the plans for this phase of renovation will be taking the facility from 6,000 to 12,000 square feet. This addition of space will allow for more classes and services. With the last expansion adding more locker space and a breakfast bar, this addition is focusing more on self-care for ladies. Certified stylist and Fitness Time for Ladies Zumba instructor, Kayla Jochman,

will be leading a salon for hair and nails, called Chic Salon. The salon will be in combination with Tranquillité, a co-ed spa for massage therapy and relaxation service customized to fit your needs. Provided by Leslie Cohen, MT, services are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment. Hrdlicka and his team are also adding to the gym portion of the facility. A swim spa will allow for low impact workouts as well as relaxation from a heated whirlpool. The cardio portion of the gym will have more treadmills and ellipticals with new machines such as row machines, stair steppers and a pull-up assist. Ladies can wind down in the dedicated yoga room or grab a protein shake from Fitness Time Nutrition in the expanded office and retail area. “I think what excites me the most in this expansion is that we are continuing to add value to a membership without increasing membership cost,” he said. “Each membership is just getting more

valuable every time we expand because members have more options now with all the features we’re adding.” In addition to spin classes, Zumba classes and kickboxing, Fitness Time for Ladies offers yoga and a yoga flexibility mix, step aerobics, a spin and sculpt class, a super sculpt class, cardio classes and Tabata classes. The newest class to be added to the schedule will be self-defense courses. The schedule, which changes periodically after a usage evaluation, is always posted at the website and on their Facebook page, where you can also find class cancellations or last minute changes. “Many gyms charge extra for their classes,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We do not. When you pay your monthly fee, you have full use of our facility, including tanning. You get the whole gym for the price of a tanning membership.” The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly by automatic bank draft, is $49.05.

Scares, Carnivals and Candy The Robson Performing Arts Center in Claremore offers a variety of Halloween activities for all ages. By Ruby Quinn

October brings to mind beautiful fall leaves, cooler temperatures and children dressing up to cash in on tricks and treats. Claremore’s Robson Performing Arts Center is in full swing with activities for the whole family. The Robson Performing Arts Center is for all students and families from Green Country. The center is mounting a Halloween carnival for the whole family, a haunted house and lots of games. Heading into the third year of the annual Haunted House, this year promises to be bigger than ever. Usually housed in the center’s smaller performance space, this year it moves to the large main stage area, promising to be twice as big with twice the scares. “Each year there is a theme,” noted the architect and designer of the haunted house, Monica Sallaway, “and this year’s theme is an insane asylum.” The asylum will be full of theatre students training hard with drama teacher, Maigan McPherson to dish out the scares. “There are three levels of scary,” states Maigan, “just in case you have a young person

that really wants to go through the haunted house, but may not be fully up to all the frights at a hundred percent.” The Robson PAC is home to The Imagine ACTion Youth Theatre Camp. Most of the kids call it, “I Act.” “No child is ever turned away due to lack of funds,” mentions I ACT co-founder, Pamela Neuok, “and that is why they raise funds through the Halloween season along with the rest of the year.” Funds from the Haunted House and other carnival activities also go toward the theatre and music departments of the schools. “Supporting the arts is vital to giving the children every opportunity to become all that they can be,” proclaims the PAC’s Executive Director, Ruby Quinn. “These children have major goals in their lives, and with experience in the arts, these performers will grow up to be critical thinkers, team players, and strong speakers, whether they choose to stay in the arts or in all fields including science and technology.” While the Asylum is scaring its victims, there will also be a “pop walk” and some other fun

By Erica Ludwig A beloved Tulsa tradition is back for a 38th year. The 2016 Linde Oktoberfest will take place October 20-23. Tulsa’s largest festival is located at River West Festival Park on the west bank of the beautiful Arkansas River, and offers four days of authentic German celebration, including live music, games and, of course, food and drinks, among number other attractions. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 at the gate for adults and free for children 12 and under. The Autobahn Pass and other ticket packages are available online, allowing patrons to purchase admission and festival money ahead of time and bypass lines. On Family Friday, admission to the festival is free from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The carnival offers unlimited rides from noon to 6 p.m. with the purchase of a $20 All-Rides Wristband. Paid parking is available near the festival grounds at $10 and $20, or patrons can ride the free shuttles, which run three routes through downtown, midtown and south Tulsa, near alternative parking areas. “The sense of community is what Linde Oktoberfest Tulsa is known for,” says Festival Director

Festival goers can expect German bands, country-western artists, oldtime rock, and dancing as entertainment for the festival. Also making it’s return is the Glockenspiel. The Glockenspiel is a two-story, giant life-sized kuckoo clock. Every hour on the hour, actors come out onto the second floor balcony and perform entertaining skits and then chime in the hour in ways only imaginable by Das Glockenspiel. A bar with adult beverages will also greet customers on the lower level. New to Oktoberfest is the OK Hoptoberfest Zelt. This tent featuring seven Oklahoma-based breweries is a celebration to local bier.
