Layoffs: Coping with Fear, Anger and Money BY MELANIE HASTY-GRANT

As oil and gas prices drop, many Oklahomans fear for their jobs. The anticipation of what’s to come makes fear and anxiety soar. All of us have a need for certainty in our lives. When we are faced with uncertainty in our jobs, it threatens our financial security and our family. It often leaves folks feeling powerless, scared and angry. It’s normal to have those feelings but important to remember that you don’t have to let your circumstances control and define you. While you may not have control of the circumstances, you have control over your own mind. Certainty comes from inside you, not from what has happened to you. Your thoughts, your feelings and your response are all up to you. You can begin to take control by developing a plan for your finances and creating a positive outlook for your future.

Revisit your Budget. Look at what is really a necessity and what you can cut back on. It may require a temporary change in lifestyle and expectations. For example, shelter, food and transportation are necessities. Fine dining, $5,000 mortgages and Porsche payments are not. Be practical and realistic. Apply for Unemployment and Prepare Your Résumé. Begin right away by utilizing your personal and professional networks for new opportunities. Get that résumé up to speed and start sending it out as soon as possible.

According to owner Carl Parson, “Customers drive from Bristow, Sapulpa, Tulsa and beyond to purchase their portable buildings from us.” Using only top-grade materials on everything they build, the company is located off the north side of Highway 412 at 30355 S. 4230 Rd., where you will find more than 50 displays available. Buildings can be delivered or built on location, but about 90 percent of the businesses’ work is done on location. In the company’s 17-year history, “We’ve never had a complaint about our buildings,” says Parson. “Our business has grown through word-of-mouth. We started with two buildings when we opened, and it just continues to grow each year. We’ve found that if you do everything better than the next guy, you’ll stay busy.” While they do mainly residential work, the company has expanded – again, by referrals – to include portable building projects

Extras, such as steel doors, windows, four-foot loft, work bench and a four-foot treated ramp, are available at an additional charge. Sizes begin at 8x8 up to a

16x24 and larger. Pole barns, which range in size from 24x24 to 40x60, include one walk-in door and one 9x8 overhead door. An additional door is available for an extra charge. The company offers a 40-year manufacturer’s warranty on the 29-gauge metal used in the pole barns and loafing sheds, while the insulation comes with a manufacturer’s 10-year warranty. Also included in the base price is a four-inch concrete slab with rebar 18-inch on center in floor and 10-foot sidewalls. “We can build a pole barn, concrete included, within a week,” says Parson. “We can complete a portable building – built on site – in one day.” The company also builds custom carports and RV covers. Although they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Parson will meet with potential customers at a different time to accommodate their schedules. “They just need to give us a call and we can work it out.” The company also offers rent-to-own options.

Partners TTCC with Tulsa Tech Enrollment soars 132 percent from 2013 to 2014 with the addition of Owasso campus. By Jim Butcher Do you live in the Owasso area and have had your educational and career goals interrupted? If you answered “yes,” a possible solution to returning to school and climbing that proverbial career ladder is not far away. Tulsa Community College has partnered with Tulsa Tech at several locations in the metro area to provide a golden opportunity, not only for high school students, but for adults who want to continue their education and earn an associate’s degree. Additionally, you

could attend and enhance your skills to lead to a promotion or move into a more promising job. In August 2013, TCC and Tulsa Tech opened its doors at the newly constructed Owasso campus located off Highway 169 and East 106th Street North. This beautiful facility provides a quarter million square feet for both educational units. Dr. Paula Willyard, dean of the Owasso Campus, explained, “The Owasso campus was conceptualized to meet the population growth and

the demand from the community of Owasso and the surrounding areas, including Collinsville, Skiatook, Claremore, Oologah, Catoosa and Bartlesville.” For many years, Tulsa Community College held classes for adult learners at Owasso High School in the evenings. “Our partnership with Tulsa Tech allows us to continue to expand our academic offerings, address continued growth in health-related fields and expand access to higher education.” The Owasso campus provides higher education access that is convenient and comparable to courses and services offered at the traditional TCC campuses. Students will have access to computer labs, placement testing, as well as academic and career advisement. Dr. Willyard, who also oversees the TCC classes offered at the Northeastern State University Broken Arrow campus, emphasized, “Citizens who are concerned about the use of taxpayers’ money will be glad to know that the organizations’ sharing of facilities is a good use of tax dollars. Future plans include providing increased college access using technology, offering a wider variety of classes, and expansion of existing programs.” In the fall of 2014, TCC began

TCC Owasso has experienced an enormous amount of growth in the past year. For the 12-month period from August 2013 to August 2014, enrollment soared by 132 percent. Growth from the spring semester of 2014 to the spring semester of 2015 jumped an additional 36 percent. Tulsa Community College has campuses spread through the metro Tulsa region. In fact, TCC is Oklahoma’s largest community college, with more students and more degree earners than any other community college in the state. “We offer students a choice

of 235 associate degrees and certificate of completion programs at TCC,” Dr. Willyard said. “TCC students come from every walk of life, and our graduates work in all sectors of business and industry to help build a stronger, more diverse economy.” Dr. Willyard has been with TCC for more than 20 years. “If you are interested in furthering your education or would like to focus on a new career and have questions, please call us,” she said. “We want to help.”

By Kim Thornhill Join Owasso Community Theatre Company for an evening of fun for the whole family! OCTC is proud to present “Our Miss Brooks” at the Mary Glass Performing Arts Center in Owasso April 23-25. Miss Brooks has been dreaming of a Caribbean cruise, frequently using the travel brochures as a way to escape the challenges of school. She’s happy someone else will be coordinating the annual school play, but an unfortunate turn of events leaves her in charge, again. Erika Hall (Miss Brooks) did some research about the show before she auditioned. “I thought the story seemed like a lot of fun,” she Hall. “My husband is a teacher, so I was able to relate to what goes on within a school.” The show offers entertainment for both children and adults. “It’s funny and fast paced with themes that both older and young people will appreciate,” said Mike Neldon (Mr. Wadsworth). “It will be a really good time,” said Lydia Ward (Doris). “I mean, romance and comedy – it doesn’t get much better than that.” It’s a family affair as Dr. Theresa Horton (Miss Audubon)

and Alice Horton (Jane) join the cast. They have not performed together, but Alice has been in several shows with Owasso High

Before making a commitment to change your life for the better, perhaps you need more information and an introduction to the county group, which is located in all 77 counties. This introduction can be found at “Friendship Day” set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, May 4 at the OSU Extension Center, 4116 E. 15th St., on the north side of the Tulsa State Fair Grounds. According to Kathy Erwin, chair of the membership committee, Friendship Day provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the organization at the OHCE Week Celebration. “Following lunch, you and your friends will have the opportunity to learn more about OHCE at our Committee Fair,” she explained. Basket weaving instructor Yvonne Dulaney will instruct the group on making a woven May Day basket. Cost for the day

is $12, including lunch and the basket workshop. Reservations must be made by April 15. You may be wondering, exactly what is Oklahoma Home & Community Education? Longtime member Mary Ellen Kingdom explained that the organization is about building better communities by working together through leadership and service. “Another key component is providing continuing education from the OSU Extension Service on matters affecting the individual, home, family and community,” she said. “It’s been proven that by working together, we can achieve more.” The Oklahoma Home & Community Education organization was formally created in 1935, but organizations known as “farm women’s clubs” existed as early as 1910 in Oklahoma. Gradually acquiring the name “home demonstration clubs,” these groups flourished and multiplied in the state after Congress passed the SmithLever Act on May 8, 1914. Their mission was to distribute educational information on agriculture and home economics to individuals who did not attend college. In 1914, Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State

University) organized the college’s program to train women home demonstration agents. After their training, they traveled by train, horse and buggy, or automobile to rural Oklahoma to promote home economy. Life Stressors Can Trigger Depression By Dr. Jeff McIlroy Joe’s story: I work a stressful job and balance that with family life and all activities associated with having active kids. My depression was severe – it affected my work, home and social life. My first episode of depression started in January of 2008 and was ongoing for almost a year before I started TMS Therapy. Kelly Umphrey is general manager of the dealership and came to Tulsa from Michigan in the early 1990s when his brother, who was working for Tulsa New Holland, told him how great Oklahoma was and that he should move here. He also told Kelly that he thought Mr. McCrate could find a place for him at the dealership. Kelly came to Tulsa without a job, and Mike did offer to

employ him for six to eight weeks to do odd jobs including sweeping the shop and painting used equipment. At the end of the “trial period,” he was offered full-time employment. He has served the company as parts department manager and salesman, and was promoted to general manager a little over a year ago. Make Strides Toward a World Free of MS M Walk MS Tulsa builds new connections at new location.

By Christopher Davis “Multiple sclerosis is a disease that destroys connections. Walk MS builds connections,” says Sarah Flowers, development manager at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Oklahoma. On Saturday, May 2, the National MS Society hosts Walk MS at Tulsa Community College’s southeast campus. The event serves as a vehicle for fundraising and community support for those affected by MS. At its core, MS is an immunemediated disease involving the deterioration of nerve fibers. The damaged nerve fibers develop scar tissue (sclerosis), which disrupts communications in the central nervous system and produces a diverse range of symptoms, from numb, tingling or weakened limbs to blurred vision, slurred speech and trembling. In short, MS stops people from moving. In keeping with the theme of building new connections, Walk MS is a call to action: keep moving forward and together we can work to find a cure. “Walk MS is a great event that brings people together,” says Flowers. “For those living with MS, as well as loved ones who support them, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and meet others who are fighting the disease.”

In previous years, Walk MS was held at Veterans Park. This year, the event has partnered with Tulsa Community College to establish a larger and more convenient site for participants and vendors. “We’re excited to bring Walk MS to TCC this year,” says Flowers. “The campus will allow room for the event to grow.” Last year, Walk MS brought about 900 participants. This year, Flowers expects to break 1,000. In the past, parking was a challenge for participants and vendors alike.

TCC’s southeast campus, located just off Highway 169 and 81st Street, offers an ideal setting for the event. The sprawling campus, which hosts a segment of the Mingo Valley Trail, provides plenty of space for a walking path to be marked for the event. Even better, there will be ample parking for everyone and easy access for friends and family to line up along the path to cheer on the participants. Walk MS will set up its main booths outside the VanTrease PACE auditorium (located on the east side of campus, facing Highway 169). In addition to on-site registration, attendees can

look forward to food and drink, as well as Blue Bell ice cream. There will also be activities for the kids, including inflatables and face painting. Also, MidFirst Bank is sponsoring a coin drive to help with fundraising. If $750 is raised at the event, then the bank will match the donations – so be sure to search the couch cushions, empty your pockets and gather up the change in your car’s ashtray! The event will also host Expo MS, which features booths from community and industry partners. Some of the organizations will offer information and resources for those affected by MS,

while others specialize in mobility technology. As attendees peruse the booths and collect information, they can enter for chances to win giveaways. You CAN Help Children A glamorous evening filled with fun and entertainment will benefit the Child Abuse Network at the CANdlelight Ball on April 25.

By Deanna Rebro An evening of glamour, fun and entertainment on April 25 will benefit a cause that has alarming, widespread and increasing statistics throughout the community. The Child Abuse Network (CAN) presents the 2015 CANdlelight Ball at the historic Mayo Hotel as a way to raise awareness and funds for children who are sexually, physically or emotionally abused. CAN, a charter member of the National Children’s Alliance, is the only nonprofit organization focused on child abuse investigation. At its Children’s Advocacy Center in Tulsa, children from newborn to 17 are provided with medical evaluations, forensic interviews, mental health services and case reviews. The entire atmosphere fosters a feeling of safety and comfort for the children and their families. Services are available upon referral 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Last year, CAN served over 2,500 children. They are currently averaging 10 children per day. A conservative estimate indicates one child in every classroom in every school in Tulsa is affected by some

form of child abuse. There is no socioeconomic boundary; child abuse is literally everywhere in the Tulsa community. The organization’s Tulsa model, Children’s Advocacy Center, stands out as the only branch in the state to house the entire team of multidisciplinary agencies to investigate child abuse and provide services under one roof. The 9,600-square-foot building houses offices for the Tulsa County District Attorney, the Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa County Department of Human Services – Child Welfare, OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine, Pediatrics Medicine and others. Keeping all involved agencies together facilitates communication and expediency to help children at this critical point in their lives. Board President Adrienne Barnett serves on this year’s event committee that is led by Amanda McConnell. Adrienne knows first-hand why centralization is important. In 2008, the family law attorney was trying a case in Arkansas that involved abuse of a young teenage girl. Offices were

scattered. No one knew what the other participating agencies were doing. The child was lost in the system. During that time, Adrienne met Dr. Robert Block, a leading authority on child abuse pediatrics. Two years later, CAN asked her to join the efforts in the Tulsa office, where Dr. Block was practicing. “I am happy to be a part of this cause,” she says, “to help raise funds for these kids and to educate the community on how to stop child abuse.” The theme for this fourth annual black tie event is “Every child is a gem.” The sparkle of precious jewels and a candlelight ambience will be the setting for the gala that features a cocktail hour, red carpet photo opportunities, dinner in the Crystal Ballroom, a live auction, live Fund-a-Need and surprise entertainment. Auction items include sports and entertainment packages, fine dining and jewelry. An after-party begins at 9 p.m. with champagne, desserts and slow, rock and swing dancing to the music of Dave and the Wavetones, a nationally recognized 16-piece band that has performed for governors, senators and celebrities throughout the Southwest. “This entire venue allows us to increase awareness of child abuse in our community, tell people what we are doing to end the violence, and honor the sponsors who make our work and our services possible,” says Adrienne.
