Dear colleagues, collaborators, alumni, and friends: In the six years since our founding in 2017, the Value Institute for Health and Care has become an epicenter of efforts to transform health care in Texas and around the world. This report focuses on the Value Institute’s cumulative impact.

From the start, we’ve been a critical piece of Dell Medical School’s mission to transform clinical care, advance translational research, educate health leaders, and improve health and care in our community.

UT President Jay Hartzell asked us to “build UT’s international voice.” As this report documents, the international impacts of our voice and thought leadership are clear.

Implementing High-Value Health Care The Value Institute partners with clinical teams and patients, designing relationship-centered care that delivers the health outcomes that matter most to individuals and families. Our work has helped enhance value creation in 19 health circumstances or medical conditions through human-centered research with patients, clinicians, and payers.

Our work enhances the understanding of individuals’ and families’ lived experiences during their health journeys. Our discoveries focus on the outcomes that matter most to patients, identifying unmet needs and gaps in care, and understanding the enablers of success. We use these insights to design care delivery that improves health results and health equity, using a model we call Integrated Practice and Research Units (IPRUs). In our more advanced projects, we have seen demonstrably better health outcomes and lower costs. Along the way, we have played key roles in securing new payment models that reward value creation and ensure flexibility, that honor patients’ preferences, and that support providers’ professionalism.

Translational Research on Implementing High Value Health Care By studying examples of successful care delivery innovations around the world and collaborating with the leaders of those efforts, we accelerate the pace of health care innovation locally, nationally, and internationally. We distilled the key steps and ideas into a series of implementation frameworks conveying the “how to” of high-value health care.

Educating Health Leaders Currently training its fifth cohort of health leaders, the unique Master of Science in Health Care Transformation program has equipped 172 midcareer and senior health care leaders, together with 38 thirdyear Dell Medical School students, with the critical skills needed to lead health care transformation.

We created five executive education programs that provide learners with one or two-day workshops exploring key element of high-value transformation.

Attracting 1800 learners from 6 continents and 33 countries, the Value Institute’s curricula have demonstrated international relevance and impact.

Case-based programs that build from our translational research provide examples that demonstrate the feasibility of change. Learners get first-hand insight into how transformation happens and see that honoring professionalism and purpose counteracts moral injury and burnout.

Inclusive Community The Value Institute advances multiple communities.

Communities of patients –and their families– collaborate with and benefit from the Value Institute’s work to transform care delivery.

In our broader Health Care Transformation Community, alumni are joined by other colleagues, patients who participated in the Redefining Health Care Summit, case protagonists, and other transformation collaborators, from around the world.

Global Impact With more than 100 invited international presentations, including at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measurement, the Australian Health and Hospital Association, the World Hospital Congress, EIT Health in Europe, and many others, the Value Institute’s global impact is growing.

In addition to the keynotes, courses, workshops, and presentations, the Value Institute team has won 9 awards for our work, produced 33 articles and one book, convened people from 21 countries in an international summit, and held an all-years alumni reunion. Each of these steps pushes along the progress in achieving better results for the people who need health care and in supporting leaders of transformational change.

Progress in transforming health care is never as fast as we’d like. We are nonetheless delighted with the tremendous impact and inspiring accomplishments of our team, our alumni, our colleagues, and our collaborators.

Together, we are moving health care toward dramatically better health outcomes for each, and for all.

IMPLEMENTING HIGH-VALUE HEALTH CARE Our most direct impact on health care is our work with clinical teams to improve the outcomes and experience of individuals and families.

We are honored to work with inspiring people who care deeply and want to change health care. Together, we get results.

We hear the impact of our work in words of joy and relief from patients and clinicians. We demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of new care models by measuring changes in the outcomes that matter most to patients. Measuring humancentered outcomes during care enables learning, adding to the impact of ongoing improvement. Our work also enables changes in payment models, rewarding results rather than fee-for-service.

Through the collaboration between the Value Institute for Health and Care and the Bipolar Disorder Center, we were able to identify what outcomes matter to people with bipolar disorder.

This work allowed us to ultimately sign a value-based contract to treat bipolar disorder. This contract is the only one in this department, and one of the few at Dell Med. – Jorge Almeida, MD, PhD, Director, Bipolar Center, UT Health Austin

STORIES OF IMPACT The program doesn’t just focus you on value-based care design, it actually focuses you on how to redesign the way health professionals care for their patients.

Patients know best.

Mr. Streak’s strong interest in the payment side of health care–aligning incentives between health care providers and health care funders–led him to the MS in Health Care Transformation program.

“I think that’s the key differentiator of what the Value Institute is doing. It’s all good and well to have a very clear academic approach to valuebased care, but you need to have the tools for implementing it and for the entire care team to work towards the ultimate goal of improving the health of people,” Mr. Streak said. He credits the program giving him the practical skills needed to design and implement value-based health care solutions.

After completing the program, Mediclinic – a large health care system in South Africa – recruited Mr. Streak for a new Business Development position, focusing on the design and implementation of new care delivery models and the establishment of new innovative care settings.

When Mr. Streak arrived at Mediclinic, he found there was already significant work being done to redesign care pathways in collaboration with health professionals. However, the patient voice needed to be strongly represented. Experience Group research is being used more to bring patients’ perspectives into value-based care projects.

Current value-based projects include care for people with chronic kidney disease, cancer, and spine, hip or keen pain that may require surgery.

The results are encouraging. “The measured health outcomes for hip and knee surgery patients, have significantly improved. The bundled fee structures include the collection of patient- reported outcome measures and other clinical and non-clinical key performance indicators. Surgeons are now able to receive enhanced remuneration based on their patients’ results – an alignment of incentives.

Everyone is benefiting – patients & providers.”

He uses the Value Institute’s value-based care strategic implementation framework to measure how they are progressing, as well as lead collaborations with all stakeholders.

As the newly appointed executive responsible for Mediclinic Southern Africa’s portfolio of related businesses, Mr. Streak is committed to continue scaling health care transformation initiatives to the benefit of the health care system in South Africa.

Human-Centered Design for Relationship-Centered Care

We design relationship-centered care that improves human-centered outcomes. Being patient-centered is a universal health care aspiration. Our work engages individuals and families at the earliest stages in the re-design of care, and critically, in the definition of the outcomes that health care works to achieve.

Why?

Patients are experts in how they live with their health conditions.

Tapping into that expertise is a revolutionary change.

We’ve learned that health care organizations (clinicians, payers, medtech, pharma, and innovators) benefit from learning how patients express and experience the outcomes that matter most to their lives. Through our Experience Group research methodology, we convene groups of people with shared health circumstances and gather the experiences, aspirations, and insights of large numbers of individuals and families.

It’s a revolutionary change.

We learn what outcomes matter most so we can work with clinicians to design care that achieves those outcomes. Typically our research identifies outcomes that surprise care teams. It also usually streamlines care, eliminating the need for heroic, time-consuming work-arounds. By focusing on these human-centered outcomes, transformed care empowers teams that demonstrate empathy while achieving their fundamental purposes of helping and healing.

The impact is profound.

For patients, care becomes easier and more aligned with their lives. The redesign reduces gaps in care and obstacles to health. Patients feel the embrace of relationship-centered care. For clinicians, addressing patients’ goals is no longer an extra activity in the care process because the care relationship is designed to achieve the most meaningful outcomes. And aligning daily work with health care’s noble purpose reduces moral injury and professional frustration.

Impacts of Transformation

We worked with more than 600 people from Texas, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Kansas in Experience Group sessions addressing 19 medical and social circumstances.

Through our programs and in their own workplaces, our MS graduates, executive education participants, and Health Care Transformation Community members have engaged hundreds more individuals and families. Each new set of insights suggests a path to change the status quo, improving care for each and for all. On the following pages are examples of the impact of this transformation in progress.

Children with Medical Complexity

Families of children with medical complexity contend with an array of challenges managing their children’s feeding tubes, ventilators, complex medication regimes, mobility devices, and other care. The fragmented health system compounds the burden. Multiple appointments in different locations, with disparate providers who have inconsistent and incomplete information, often isolate parents from the care that should support them.

Working with the Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic at Dell Children’s Medical Center, we have spent over five years implementing an integrated care delivery model that brings together primary and subspecialty care, private duty nursing, durable medical equipment companies, and other health care professionals through telehealth-enabled semi-annual Whole Child visits. In this model, parents are equal partners in setting their children’s health goals, and connections between parents and clinicians are strengthened.

Results of this new care delivery model show that the majority of the families felt heard, understood, and seen by the clinical team, and had a tangible plan for reaching their child’s health goals – outcomes that parents had identified as priorities. Ongoing innovation focuses on additional home health support as well as mental health support.

The care delivery innovations are supported through new payment models with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBS) and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Building on these successes, we are working with BCBS to lessen parents’ burdens by streamlining the approval process for supplies, referrals, and medications.

Women’s Health

When a local health system embarked on the construction of a new women’s hospital in Austin, leaders asked a critical question: What services should the hospital offer to address unmet needs in women’s health, and how should these services differ from current offerings?

The Value Institute worked with the health system, conducting Experience Group sessions to understand the experiences of women who had given birth or had pelvic floor surgery. Research with patients was done in English and in Spanish, with attention to including the experiences of women from underserved communities.

We use journey maps to communicate what patients shared during Experience Group sessions. From the journey maps, we distill insights that enable care teams to respond with care innovations. Here is a depiction:

INSIGHTS

RESPONSE

Current screening questionnaires do not address feelings outside of depression. Lack of attention to other emotions –loneliness or anxiety– is a gap that leaves patients feeling diminished, misunderstood, and without a path to get help.

As a result of our work, the health system is:

Participants want the ability to talk with others who are living similar maternity experiences, even when they have great relationships with their doctors and nurses.

• Integrating a partner organization’s patient education programs focused on pregnancy and birth planning, infant care and feeding, and parent self-care

Participants found it challenging to know what questions to ask their doctors. As many participants explained ‘you don’t know what you don’t know,’ with respect to the maternity journey.

• Engaging all care team members in strategies for understanding patient preferences and integrating lactation support where appropriate

Participants shared that there was an attention shift toward their child after birth. They still had questions and needed support from their care providers after coming home from the hospital.

• Exploring collaborative care models for increased and broader mental health support and engaging community partners for expanded support

Safer Suicide Care

Despite increased public and clinical attention, suicide rates continue to soar. Working with the Value Institute, clinicians at UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School, and Donna Shanor (MS in Health Care Transformation Alumna) saw an opportunity to improve caregivers’ responses to suicide risk.

We conducted Experience Group sessions and interviews with individuals who are suicide survivors and with loved ones of people who died by suicide, as well as interviews with care providers.

We sought insight about how to more effectively intervene to help people at risk of suicide. Insights from that research underpinned creating and embedding new suicide prevention screening tools and a new care process in the primary and subspecialty clinics, as well as revised suicide prevention communication and training for medical and non-medical staff throughout the clinics.

Impact on Scientific Research in Pediatric Cardiac Care

Understanding the outcomes that matter most to patients should also inform scientific research priorities. Through a grant funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Value Institute worked with four internationally-renowned pediatric heart programs to conduct Experience Group research.

We learned the outcomes that matter, gaps in care, and obstacles to health for patients with anomalous aortic origin of the coronary artery, the second-leading cause of sudden cardiac death in the young.

Using the insights from the Experience Group research, we proposed a national research agenda, informed directly by what patients and parents said mattered most to them.

STORIES OF IMPACT Jake Grundstein credits the Value Institute not only with highlighting the benefit of measuring outcomes, but specifically with helping him understand the importance of focusing on the outcomes that matter most to patients.

After receiving his master’s degree, Mr. Grundstein became the Vice President of Clinical Operations and Value-Based Care at Limber Health, a musculoskeletal health platform offering a range of services from digital home-exercise to data analytics for providers, payers, and employers.

At Limber, Mr. Grundstein built a Medicare-approved Qualified Clinical Data Registry that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recognized as a business committed to improving health care quality. Subsequently, he created an episodebased musculoskeletal payment model accepted by Maryland Medicare’s Episode Quality Improvement Program.

“Now, Limber is expanding on the registry to build an outcomes platform based on data from across organizations that will be actionable for clinicians and improve patient care.”

Master of Science in Health Care Transformation

The Master of Science in Health Care Transformation equips leaders and emerging leaders from all types of health care organizations to design, implement, and improve services that achieve better health outcomes for individuals and families.

The one-year program serves working professionals seeking skills to catalyze, lead, and deliver transformative change. Typically in their mid-40’s and 50’s, learners experience hybrid online and in-person learning that provides the how-to knowledge and skills to: ✔ Inspire higher aspirations for health care ✔ Include patients and families in solution design ✔ Develop high-value health care solutions

Critical Concepts Fall courses focus on patients and the outcomes that matter most to them and their families, creating a path to raising aspirations and countering inertia.

The courses in the MS Health Care Transformation program have allowed me to be better prepared when engaging with payers and providers.

For example, I recently was tasked with constructing a bundled payment model for non-surgical low back pain. I started this process by reviewing my notes from the “Redefining Health Delivery” course to map out and identify our care pathway for treating non-surgical low back pain. I then took the developed care pathway and used my notes from “Health Care Finance” to develop the model we are using to identify costs per patient vs. reimbursement, allowing me to bring a negotiated rate to the insurer.

Colorectal Cancer Prevention in Rural Communities of Color Jasmine Shea, Attilie Carrig, Jose Juarez, Terry Scoggin

People in rural communities suffer disproportionate rates of late-stage colorectal cancers. This project explored how colorectal cancer screenings are delivered to the communities of color in rural and underserved populations and developed solutions to minimize and overcome those barriers.

Gynecological Cancer-Related Depression and Anxiety Michael Frumovitz, Sofia Gereta, Natalie McCall, Miguel Vega

Women diagnosed with gynecological cancers often experience depression and anxiety. To address their unmet needs, this project analyzed mental health assessments and statistics from care delivery and payer sources to identify paths for transforming care delivery to better serve the full range of patients’ emotional needs.

Is There a Need for Mental Health Screening and Intervention Ahead of a Total Knee Arthroplasty?

Improving Care for Senior Hispanic Patients with Diabetes: A Formative Approach to Measuring What Matters Dimitri Dimitroyannis, Armando Hinojosa, Denise LaRue, Erika Pratt, Jorge Valdez

Health outcomes of care for senior Hispanic people with diabetes are generally poor. This project used Experience Group sessions and key informant interviews to identify unmet needs, barriers to care, and the outcome priorities and preferences of this patient population that can guide care transformation.

Virtual Cancer Care Support Program: Expanding Access to Improve Patient Experience and Quality of Cancer Care Daniel Anaya Saenz, Ryan Huey, Hannah Rashdan, Magdalena Rusinowski, Roberto Solis

Rural patients face unique challenges in seeking cancer care. This project addressed gaps in the delivery of cancer care to rural patients by identifying barriers confronting patients, providers, and caregivers. The project explored telemedicine solutions for supporting patients at the time of initial diagnosis and enabling multidisciplinary, sub-specialized tumor boards.

The mental health of patients seeking elective surgeries, such as total knee replacement, has largely been ignored. This project identified gaps in mental health care and the impacts of those gaps on patients’ long-term recovery and recommended solutions to close those gaps.

Resilient and Thriving: Using Human-Centered Design to Co-Develop a Post-Treatment Survivorship Intervention with Cancer Survivors Brooke Brownlow, Cindi Grossling, Michelle Payan, Peter Redwood, Georgia Williams

From Survivor to Thriver: Cancer survivors often contend with immense physical, emotional, and financial burdens following treatment and no roadmap to help them navigate the transition to their new normal. Interacting with affected individuals led to insight about their unmet needs and future aspirations. The supportive framework that resulted led to the formation of a non-profit corporation, Kairos Therapeutic Retreat.

Care teams often lack an understanding of what matters most to patients who undergo same-day hip or knee replacement surgery. Insights from Experience Group sessions and individual patient interviews, data analysis, stakeholder interviews, and a literature review resulted in a care map that guides patients, caregivers, and providers in optimizing the same-day surgery patient experience and outcomes.

She credits the Value Institute program with giving her the skills to forge her way.

“Most masters programs are about working within the system that we have, which of course has value.

But this program focuses on how we can make it better.

It spoke to me.”

Dr. Nida Zakiullah became a physician for the altruistic reason that most people do – to help patients. Her passion for helping patients and her drive for change led Dr. Zakiullah to the MS in Health Care Transformation program.

As she began the program, she was hired by Baylor Scott & White in an Austin-based clinic.

“When I was interviewing, they knew I was starting this program. I think that was part of the reason why I got the job.” Indeed, she was officially promoted to Medical Director of the Clinic shortly after graduating.

“I draw on what I learned every day, and every course has relevance,” Dr. Zakiullah reflected, explaining the program refocused her passion for why she started this profession, positively shifted her views, and gave her the tools to create change.

“The program taught me how to put patients at the center of everything that we do. It changed my conversations with patients, such as, asking more about what their goals of care instead of checking boxes off a list.”

In her role as medical director, Dr. Zakiullah is responsible for measuring outcomes of care such as blood pressure control. “One of the things that I learned is the idea of having a strategy, and tackling the areas that need the most improvement.”

For example, she created a “needs card” for her patients, so at every appointment, a team member discusses with the patient important follow-ups, such as labs or referrals. “While this may seem like a small thing, it has greatly improved continuity for patients, which in turn has helped patients achieve better health outcomes.”

Transformation at Scale

Drs. Shannon Jackson and Kristine Chapman, 2022 master’s graduates, are leading health care transformation at Providence Health Care, one of Canada’s largest health care organizations. Located in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Providence is building a new hospital, slated to open in 2027, that will feature an array of redesigned, high-value health services.

The duo has worked collaboratively to support teams from community through specialist care who begin by focusing on value for patients. Dr. Jackson leads a Value Team currently helping to integrate care for people struggling with complex addictions, mental health issues, and complex social needs.

Dr. Chapman is the physician lead for the Shared Care VBHC program and Department of Medicine Innovation, supporting projects ranging from opioid stewardship to team-based care for women’s endocrine health. With their advanced training in value-based care implementation, Drs. Jackson and Chapman draw on various skill sets and knowledge to educate, guide, support, and mentor clinical teams.

They helped develop a value-based health care educational curriculum and partnered with the Value Institute to engage more than 90 leaders in executive education workshops.

STORIES OF IMPACT Eva Villalba’s efforts to help patients in Quebec have established her as one of Canada’s preeminent value-based health care leaders.

After graduating from the MS in Health Care Transformation program, Ms. Villalba led Canada’s first value-based health care demonstration project in oncology as the Executive Director of the Quebec Cancer Coalition, a patient advocacy organization focused on improving Quebec’s health system for people affected by cancer.

Based on insights from Experience Group sessions with colorectal cancer patients, survivors, and family caregivers to better understand the outcomes they cared about most, she and her team collaborated with patients, providers, and administrators to redesign colorectal cancer care delivery at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital using value-based strategies. “We are showing that value-based health care can work in Canada for a complex disease in a way that prioritizes patients as partners.

Now, my team and I are preparing to take what we learned and launch a similar project at Université Laval’s Quebec Heart and Lung Institute in Quebec City,” said Ms. Villalba.

Ms. Villalba has also participated in international value-based health care initiatives and collaborations in France, the Netherlands, and Brazil, and in 2021 was named the Canadian Ambassador for Value Based Health Care Center Europe.

Subsequently, she translated the Center’s value-based training materials into French and used the translations to educate Quebec’s health care workers, pharmaceutical companies, and government officials about value-based health care’s patient-centered philosophy. “By getting stakeholders who usually don’t talk to come together around improving patients’ lives, I’ve been able to slowly but surely transform health culture,” she reports.

Her work continues to influence health care policy in Quebec, with value-based health care providing the foundation for the province’s Health Care Transformation and Health Data Laws in 2023.

External recognition is important because our work challenges the status quo. Books, papers, articles and interviews not only document the impact of changes in care delivery, they also broaden the impact of our work by communicating methods and results to people beyond our networks. Case studies enable teaching the “how-to” of transformation.

Providence Health Care’s Adult Bleeding Disorders Program Redesigned care for patients with hemophilia resulted in incidences of uncontrolled bleeding among patients with the most severe expressions of the disease declining from more than 13 per patient per year, to less than 1.

Demonstrating Value in Rehabilitation Care: Shirley Ryan AbilityLab The nation’s premier rehabilitation hospital revamped its organizational structure and care processes in pursuit of delivering the outcome that matters most to its patients: restored ability.

Project Lighthouse Using human-centered design, Falck, an international provider of ambulance and health care services delivering 9 million services every year globally, created solutions to alleviate the distress of sudden medical emergencies for not just patients, but also family members and bystanders.

Team Dynamics at Westfall Pediatric Clinic: A Scenario Westfall Clinic (name disguised) received a grant to expand services aimed at reducing disparities and improving patient outcomes. When fast growth threatens the clinic’s current operations, the director must manage team dynamics and coalesce staff around the change effort.

Transitioning to Value-Based Mental Health Care in the UK: St. Andrew’s Healthcare A staid, 180-year old residential psychiatric hospital transformed its care when it focused on achieving the health outcomes that mattered most to its patients.

Fullerton Hospital: Board Governance in a Rural Community The new CEO of rural Fullerton Hospital (name disguised) obtains board of director agreement to terminate the employment of the sole physician for cause.

The community challenges this decision, leaving the CEO to navigate across a now-divided board, the community, patient welfare, and calls for his removal.

Dell Medical School’s Musculoskeletal: Integrated Practice Unit UTHA’s Musculoskeletal Institute transformed care for people with joint pain, eliminating a year-long waiting period for care and ushering in a new value-based payment model.

Kearny County Hospital: Improving Maternity Care in Western Kansas Health care leaders in a rural, underserved community saw a need for expanded maternal health services that afforded access to comprehensive prenatal care and highrisk maternity services. Building on a full-spectrum family medicine strategy, Kearny County leaders were able to create services that significantly improved the birth outcomes of women in their community.

Commonwealth Care Alliance: Value-Based Care for Vulnerable Populations A precursor to current Medicare Advantage plans, Commonwealth Care Alliance transformed care for frail, medically-complex, economically-disadvantaged patients who sought to live safely at home.

Hippo-Sized Hope for Transforming Public Dental Care in Australia: Dental Health Services Victoria Dental care in Australia was transformed into integrated, team-based care that dramatically improved access and outcomes among previously underserved members of the community in Victoria.

The Comprehensive Care Center at Baton Rouge General Medical Center Employees of this hospital with complex cardiometabolic health challenges dramatically improved health outcomes through an integrated, team-based primary care model.

Designing Value-Based Cancer Care: The CaLM Model in Austin, Texas A new model of cancer care focused on achieving capability, comfort, and calm by wrapping patients in the embrace of an integrated team of caregivers.

Developing a New Tool to Measure OCD Treatment Progress at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Psychologists at Cincinnati Children’s developed a simple and astoundingly effective tool for accelerating the progress of children undergoing care for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Trauma Care in Victoria, Australia The State of Victoria transformed its system of care and payment for victims of vehicular accidents to create an integrated payer and provider network that dramatically improved outcomes for patients and reduced overall spending on trauma care.

STORIES OF IMPACT For Marcia Makdisse, the MS in Health Care Transformation program was a transformative experience. “I realized that my mission was to be a catalyst for implementing and scaling-up value-based care in Latin America,” she explained.

Following this newfound vision, Dr. Makdisse founded Brazil-based Mak Valor Mentoring in 2020 and Academia VBHC in 2021, sister companies focused on serving as a resource for education, research, and implementation of value-based care in Portuguese-speaking and Latin American countries.

Dr. Makdisse works to expand value-based health care in Latin America and strengthen connections with the international value-based health care community.

In addition to conducting educational workshops, she became part of the Wennberg International Collaborative that published an Atlas of Health Care Variation for Brazil.

“Seventy-five percent of Brazilians depend on the public system. We needed local knowledge, and we needed people to move away from looking at national averages.

Now, that information is free for anyone to use,” she said.

Dr. Makdisse also used Experience Group Methodology, which she learned through the program, to study the lived experiences of parents of children with milk protein allergies and people with lower back pain. “We completed that research by partnering with both patient associations and payers,” she explained. “We’re working on redesigning care pathways around the outcomes that matter most to patients, and the payer will apply our ideas to their hospital network in the South of Brazil.”

Scaling Impact

The Value Institute convened more than 100 leaders from 21 countries for the Redefining Health Care Summit in Barcelona, April 5-7, 2022.

Sharing across boundaries accelerates successful high-value care delivery adoption.

The Covid-19 pandemic made clear the need to transform health care to high-value.

Emerging from the crisis, the Value Institute for Health and Care convened the global community of health care transformers and people whom health care serves.

By sharing insights from successes and discussing ongoing challenges, the Summit offered a unique opportunity for the community to work together in person and enable each other’s progress in achieving high-value health care.

The Summit took a non-conference approach grounded in the concepts of coffee breaks, a gift exchange, and an empty suitcase. Coffee breaks, where people speak directly to one another, are usually the best part of any large meeting. Summit sessions eliminated PowerPoints. Instead, patient luminaries launched small group conversations on specific topics. The impact of these opening exchanges: new relationships created, thinking expanded, and next steps envisioned.

Everyone gives and receives in a gift exchange. The Summit’s structure enabled every participant to exchange insights and solutions. Given the rich experiences of Summit participants, each needed a virtual empty suitcase to carry home all the ideas, approaches, and insights – the gifts – they’d received.

STORIES OF IMPACT Dr. Andrew Well joined the Value Institute’s Master’s program as the first Health Transformation Fellow in Congenital Heart Disease.

In 2021, Dr. Well became the Assistant Director of Health Transformation and Patient Experience at the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease and an assistant professor at Dell Medical School’s Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care. He now works with Dr. Charles D. Fraser Jr. and Dr. Carlos M. Mery to identify the outcomes that matter most to patients and families and to determine and implement solutions that address existing gaps in care.

Recently, Dr. Well and his colleagues, including the Value Institute team, completed the first phase of a multi-year study on care of children with single-ventricle congenital heart disease. That study created conditionspecific journey maps documenting patients’ life experiences based on patient interviews and Experience Group studies. The team published findings in the Journal of the American Heart Association and presented them to the American Academy of Pediatrics and continues working on care innovations to improve outcomes with these patients and families.

Our deep gratitude to Alice Andrews for her dedication to the Value Institute’s Education program since its inception.
