Today, we come together to celebrate the achievements of our graduates and to wish them well as they embark on the next chapter of their journey. But their connection to Valpo does not end here — on the contrary, it is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with their alma mater. Valparaiso University’s origins trace back to 1859, when it was founded by Methodists as the Valparaiso Male and Female College — an early pioneer in co-education. For nearly 30 years, it operated as the Northern Indiana Normal School under the leadership of visionary educator Henry Baker Brown, before officially becoming Valparaiso University. Following decades of growth, the University faced significant
financial challenges during World War I. In 1925, the Lutheran University Association — comprised of clergy and laity — acquired the institution, marking the beginning of Valpo’s modern era as an independent Lutheran University.
Today, Valparaiso University spans nearly 300 acres and continues to foster a lifelong commitment in its students to seek truth, pursue knowledge, and grow in wisdom. ACADEMIC ATTIRE
On formal University occasions, faculty wear academic regalia with roots in the Middle Ages, when long gowns and hoods served both practical and symbolic purposes. As European universities developed, distinct styles of gowns and hoods came to represent academic rank and institutional affiliation.
In the United States, academic dress has been in use since colonial times. A standardized system, established in the late 19th century, remains in place today across most institutions.
The most distinctive feature of academic regalia is the hood, which reflects both the wearer’s degree and the institution that awarded it. Valparaiso University hoods are lined in brown and gold and trimmed with a color representing the field of study.

The academic cap, a later addition to academic dress, was originally a symbol of the master’s degree. Styles varied, but the square mortarboard — originating from Oxford — is now most common. The tassel, evolved from an earlier tuft, is typically black or a color representing the academic field; gold tassels are reserved for doctoral degree holders and institutional leaders.
Some Valparaiso University faculty wear regalia reflecting international or non-standard academic traditions. Cords worn over the left shoulder indicate honor society membership, while red, white, and blue cords honor U.S. military service.
SYMBOLS
Two prominent symbols in academic ceremonies are the mace and the presidential medallion. The mace, representing the University’s authority, is carried by the president’s marshal during the academic procession. It features four key emblems: the University seal, the chi rho (a symbol of Christ), the Luther rose (reflecting the University’s Lutheran heritage), and the seal of the State of Indiana, along with smaller symbols representing academic disciplines and Christian virtues.
The presidential medallion, worn at official ceremonies, bears the University seal on one side and the inscription “Official President ’s Medal” on the other. The president also wears a custom robe with four gold-trimmed velvet chevrons and panels, each embroidered with the University seal. The hood is brown velvet lined with white and gold satin, reflecting Valpo’s colors.
Reverend Brian E. Konkol, Ph.D.
PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
Reverend Brian E. Konkol, Ph.D., became the 20th President of Valparaiso University on January 1, 2026. An ordained Lutheran minister and experienced higher education leader, he is focused on strengthening the University’s mission to prepare students for leadership and service in church and society.
Since arriving, Rev. Konkol has emphasized collaboration across the campus community. Working with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners, he has helped develop a “Strategic Mission Compass” to guide the University’s priorities and future direction. His leadership centers on the message that Valparaiso University “builds lives for good.”
Rev. Konkol brings an international background in ministry, education, and public engagement. Originally from Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, he began his ordained ministry in Guyana with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served congregations, lectured at the Lutheran Lay Academy, and co-hosted the nationally televised program Word for the World. His work there also included community initiatives focused on interfaith cooperation, youth development, and much more.

Rev. Konkol later served in South Africa with the ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program, while assisting in parish ministry and lecturing at the Lutheran Theological Institute. His work included participation with international faith organizations at United Nations climate discussions.
Before coming to Valpo, Rev. Konkol held leadership roles in both congregational and higher education settings, including serving as vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University. There, he helped expand student engagement, programming, and fundraising while promoting nationally recognized models of interfaith and ethical engagement in higher education.
Rev. Konkol holds degrees from Viterbo University, Luther Seminary, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. He and his wife, Kristen Konkol, Ph.D., have two children.
PROVOST AND EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
Eric W. Johnson ’87, Ph.D., serves as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Valparaiso University, where he is the University’s chief academic officer. He also oversees the Departments of Chapel and Church Vocations and Student Life, and the Christopher Center Library. During his tenure, he has focused on strengthening high-quality, in-demand academic programs and enhancing the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.
Provost Johnson joined Valpo’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1997. He has held the Paul and Cleo
Brandt Professorship, chaired the department, and helped establish the Valparaiso University International Engineering Programs. His scholarly work centers on nanodevice-based electronic component modeling and engineering education.
In 2013, he was appointed dean of the College of Engineering, where he led the launch of programs in bioengineering and environmental engineering, promoted holistic learning, and encouraged an entrepreneurial mindset among students.
THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
Bryce H. Drew ’98
Bryce H. Drew ’98 is the most decorated basketball player in Valpo Athletics history, a former basketball standout, and a highly accomplished collegiate coach. As a studentathlete, he led Valpo to four conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, becoming a national figure after hitting “The Shot” in 1998 to secure the team’s first NCAA Tournament victory. He finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in points, three-point field goals, and assists, and earned an ESPY Award for his iconic moment.
A first-round NBA Draft pick, Bryce played professionally for the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls, and Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets. He later returned to Valpo as head coach, where he compiled a 124–49 record, won multiple conference
titles, and led the program to NCAA Tournament appearances while earning three Horizon League Coach of the Year honors.
Bryce went on to serve as head coach at Vanderbilt University and now leads Grand Canyon University men’s basketball, where he has guided the program to multiple conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament win. He is a member of multiple halls of fame, including Valpo Athletics and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Bryce graduated from Valparaiso University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a minor in business.

David Ankerberg ’26 of Grafton, Wisconsin, graduates from Valparaiso University with a bachelor of arts in psychology, minors in criminology and humanities, as well as distinction as a Christ College Scholar. David also conducted research in competency testing through the lab of Applied Forensic Psychology. He completed an internship at Porter County PACT where he supported previously incarcerated individuals through case management and problem solving court. Beyond the classroom, David contributed to the music department across several ensembles including Chamber

Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, as well as participating in the Valparaiso University Handbell Choir (Resurrection Ringers). David enriched his Valpo experience with a semester of studying abroad in Cambridge, United Kingdom, at the Valparaiso University Study Center. He is a member of the Valparaiso University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the leadership honor society, and Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. After graduation, David will be working in the Milwaukee area and beginning preparation for the graduate school admission process.

Molly M. O ’ Rear ’26 of Naperville, Illinois, graduates from Valparaiso University with a bachelor of science in business administration, majoring in project management. Molly has been a dedicated leader in all aspects of her time at Valpo. In the classroom, she is a part of Beta Gamma Sigma, and was a tutor for finite mathematics students. She was a member of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Student Center, where she led multiple Bible studies and dedicated her time and efforts into deepening others’ faith. A four-year starter on the soccer team, Molly was a member of the fi rst Valpo team to win a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in 2022 and Missouri Valley Conference tournament title in 2023. She

competed in the NCAA Division I tournament in 2023 as well, and was a member of the 2022 All-Freshman Team, 2025 AllPreseason Team, and 2025 All-MVC Second Team. Molly has been honored for her academic success, both as a member of the MVC Scholar Athlete Team in 2025, as well as the AllDistrict Team in 2024 and 2025. As a leader on the soccer pitch, she was dedicated to upholding the strong values and traditions of a winning program. Off the field, Molly completed two internships during her time at Valpo, as a law firm intern and as a management trainee at Enterprise Mobility. After graduation, Molly plans to start her sales career in Houston with Medix Healthcare.

Caitlin M. Hwang ’26, ’28 MSPA, of Naperville, Illinois, graduates from Valparaiso University with a bachelor of science in health science as part of the five-year physician assistant program. Throughout her time at Valpo, Caitlin distinguished herself as an accomplished student, compassionate healthcare professional, and engaged campus leader. Known for her strong work ethic, warmth, and dedication to others, she consistently supported her peers, built meaningful relationships with faculty, and embraced every opportunity for personal and professional growth. She served as vice president of the Asian American Paci fi c Islander Coalition where she worked to bring cultural awareness and connection across campus. A lifelong dancer, Caitlin was also an
active member of Valparaiso University’s Dance Ensemble, collaborating with her fellow performers and performing in this year’s annual dance showcase. Beyond campus, Caitlin devoted herself to serving others as a patient care technician in both nursing home and emergency room settings where she provided compassionate care and meaningful support to patients and families. After graduation, Caitlin will continue her journey at Valparaiso University by beginning her graduate studies in the master of science in physician assistant studies program, with a strong interest in emergency medicine and dermatology. She leaves her undergraduate years hoping to have inspired others through dedication, service, and respect to her fellow graduates.

The following candidates have applied for doctoral degrees, master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and/or associate’s degrees, and they have either completed all requirements for those degrees or have expectation of completing the requirements by the end of the semester. Final certification of candidates for the conferral of degrees is contingent upon satisfactorily completing whatever work may still be in preparation, satisfying all other requirements of the University for graduation, and continuing conduct in keeping with the ideals of the University.
