Getting a grip on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Healing carpal tunnel syndrome with Laser Therapy

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve -- the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand. It can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers. The median nerve provides feeling and movement to the “thumb side” of the hand (the palm, thumb, index finger, middle finger, and thumb side of the

ring finger). The area in your wrist where the nerve enters the hand is called the carpal tunnel. This tunnel is normally narrow, so any swelling can pinch the nerve and cause pain, numbness, tingling or weakness. This is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

Causes and risk factors Carpal tunnel syndrome is common in people who perform repetitive motions of the hand and wrist. Typing on a computer keyboard and using a mouse are the most common causes of carpal tunnel. Other causes include:

driving, assembly line work, painting, writing, use of tools (especially hand tools or tools that vibrate), sports such as racquetball or handball, and playing some musical instruments.

A number of medical conditions are associated with carpal tunnel syndrome including: chronic inflammatory conditions, bone fractures and arthritis of the wrist, diabetes, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, menopause, PMS and pregnancy, infections, and obesity.

Symptoms Numbness or tingling in the thumb and next two or three fingers of one or both hands, numbness or tingling in the palm of the hand, pain extending from the elbow, pain in wrist or hand in one or both hands, problems with fine finger movements (coordination) in one or both hands, wasting away of the muscle under the thumb (in advanced or long-term cases), weak grip or difficulty carrying bags or opening a jar (a common complaint), weakness in one or both hands.

Class IV Laser Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Up until recently the most common treatment for carpal tunnel has been the use of anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, wrist splinting and surgery. These treatments do not treat the cause but the symptoms only and are not always effective long-term.

Now, however, we have a powerful, effective, noninvasive solution to reverse the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Ending the symptoms caused by carpal tunnel syndrome requires stopping the cycle of inflammation at its source.

Cervical Cancer: What you should know about it By: Amanpreet Buttar, MD

Each year in the United States about 15,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Worldwide, about 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, resulting in 250,000 deaths. The disease is the third most common cancer among women.

HPV: A virus that causes cancer T h e h u m a n p a p i l l o m av i r u s e s ( H P V ) constitute the most common sexually transmitted infections.

At least 70% of individuals are affected by HPV at some time in their lives. Certain high-risk strains of HPV are associated with cervical cancer. Most of the infections clear up over time; however, some persist triggering cancer after many years. Therefore persistence

of HPV infection is worrisome and should be avoided.

An individual infected with HPV does not have any symptoms and is therefore likely to pass on the infection without knowledge.

HPV has many strains and some have been linked to serious diseases as follows: • HPV types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases in females and males.

• HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases in females.

• HPV types 16 and 18 also cause about 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases in females.

The virus is also linked to anal cancer.

Vaccination against the virus is available The FDA has approved two vaccines that prevent HPV related cancers by creating immunity to HPV.

Gardasil is a recombinant vaccine (contains no live virus) that is given as three injections over a six-month period. It was approved by the FDA in June of 2006. The FDA approved indications are to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions and genital warts due to HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18 in females aged 9 to 26. It is also approved for vaccinating boys and men 9 through 26 years of age for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11. Vaccination in people ages 9 through 26 years for the prevention of anal cancer and associated precancerous lesions due to HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 is also approved.

Gardasil is additionally recommended for use in females by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Springtime, Native Plants and Grazing in the Regional Parks

When you visit many of your East Bay Regional Parks in the spring and early summer, you may wonder about the cattle, sheep and goats that graze on parklands.

Grazing animals have been a part of the ecosystem of this region for many thousands of years. The native plants of the East Bay evolved under the influence of prehistoric herbivores – large herds of deer, elk, antelope, and other grazing animals. Cattle have grazed here since the 18th century.

The park district uses grazing as a resource tool. The program is conducted under a highly regulated license, and is based on modern principles of range management. Each year, about 5,000 cattle, 1,000 sheep and 1,000 goats are grazed on parklands.

Livestock grazing is to maintain and improve habitat conditions for resident plants

and animals, and to prevent wildfires. Research indicates that moderately grazed areas generally display a greater diversity and density of plant and animal life.

Well-managed grazing increases the diversity of habitats available to wildlife species. Many species, including several endangered species such as red-legged frogs and California tiger salamanders, benefit from the vegetation management performed by livestock. Ponds developed for livestock-watering support large numbers of breeding amphibians, which also feed on the abundant insect life found in the grasslands.

Ground squirrel colonies that thrive in grazed areas support the foraging needs of predators like bobcats and golden eagles. They also create underground tunnels that are used by insects, reptiles, amphibians, and many small mammals. The tiger salamander and red-legged frog both utilize burrows, as

do burrowing owls, kit fox, and badgers.

We put signs at gates when rotated cattle are brought in.

When you are hiking or riding around grazing cattle, clap as you approach which usually clears them off the trail. Your dogs should be on leash when near to cattle. Also, be sure to leave gates either open or closed, depending on how you find the gate.

Parks with year-round cattle grazing include Briones Regional Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. Parks with seasonal cattle grazing include Bishop Ranch Open Space, Diablo Foothills Regional Park, Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, and Round Valley Regional Preserve.

If you would like to purchase some California native plants, and get free horticultural advice, don’t miss the annual sale at the Botanic Garden in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley on Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will find many plants that are not available in commercial nurseries. Proceeds directly benefit the Regional Parks Botanic Garden.

The safety of the vaccine was evaluated in approximately 11,000 individuals. Current evidence suggests that the vaccine protection lasts a minimum of 4 years.

Cervarix is another recombinant vaccine given in three doses over six months.

It is approved by the FDA for prevention of cervical cancer

by HPV types 16 and 18, in females 9 through 25 years of age. This vaccine has been shown to be effective for at least 6.5 years.

Side Effects from the vaccines Common side effects from both vaccines include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection s i t e. O t h e r s i d e e f f e c t s include headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Severe allergic reactions have also been reported in some cases.

Limitations of the vaccines While both vaccines are effective, they do not cover all types of HPV that cause cervical cancer. Hence, regular tests will still be needed.

The actual duration of the protection for the vaccines is also not known. Further, if an HPV type 16 infection was already present, the vaccines do not prevent the progression to cancer. Hence, it is important to take the vaccine before being exposed to the virus, preferably starting at the age of 9. While many private health plans are providing coverage for this vaccination, the availability of coverage and the level of coverage may vary over time.

The Dirt on Natural Gardening

To get to the root of the matter: soil is essential for plants’ survival, and the condition and management of it will effect what you can grow.

Since I was a kid people have been telling me they have bad soil. What they have in most cases around here is clay soil.

Clay is not “bad;” in fact, it is good at storing nutrients and water. What is difficult about it is that it is very dense and easily saturated and compacted, hard

as rock when dry and like clay when wet. Most plants need better drainage and aeration, so part of the solution can be selecting plants that are adapted to clay soil. Soil can also be improved (or damaged), so good gardeners know that to take care of their landscape, it is important to take care what is under it.

Growing up, even when I went to college for Horticulture, I thought that cultivating, tilling and fertilizing were

things everyone did to garden.

In soil science classes I learned the importance of adding organic matter to clay soils and heard that tilling too much destroyed soil structure, so I experimented with minimal till methods—mostly for agricultural applications. Fast forward 28 years and I am back in School at Sonoma State University taking Sustainable Landscaping classes and reading the book Teaming With Microbes. There I learned about “sheet mulching” in which you emulate natural soil processes by creating a layered soil covering with mulch, an inch or two of compost under that, and a layer of cardboard to smother and prevent annual weeds. As in nature, the dead plant parts fall to the ground and form a humus layer that biologically improves the soil, and a mulch or duff layer that sits on top of that, giving the soil protection from heavy rains, temperature extremes, wind, erosion, and evaporation.

We still till selectively to install lawns and hand turn copious amounts of compost into the heavily compacted soils that

can be found after building construction. This is a one time treatment for immediate results, sheet mulching can do the same over time.

All that compost and decomposing mulch helps soil biologically. Healthy productive soil is actually full of life: organisms that feed on the organic matter and each other, ultimately benefiting the plants by making nutrients available to them. From animals like beetles and earthworms, to smaller beneficial nematodes, fungi and bacteria and many more, there is a whole living ecosystem below our feet, which ultimately turns plant debris into plant food. Not only that, but these organisms build soil structure which allows for air, roots, and water to pass through more easily. In nature, no one needs to fertilize and the plants look just great. I have seen wonderful loamy soils locally in native woodlands, where nature did her thing.

Healthy soil can be lost or destroyed by erosion, frequent tilling, compaction from vehicles or large animals, or the use of synthetic fertilizers

and pesticides. When the soil ecosystem gets out of balance, plant health goes down, and this is often when the pathological fungi and other disease-causing organisms appear.

My advice for healthy soils: mulch any open areas, add a layer of compost under your mulch, leave the leaves if not visually offensive, use mulching lawnmowers, which return clippings back into the grass, apply compost tea to plants if available to restore or increase biological activity. If possible, avoid the old school method of regular tilling of the soil. Do not work clay soil when saturated. Only use synthetic pesticides very sparingly, if at all. Use natural or organic fertilizers if plants look like they need some extra food, vigor or for vegetable production: alfalfa pellets can provide supplemental nutrition, fishmeal for nitrogen for growth and cotton seed meal works well for acid loving plants. GONE TO SEED

“Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed.

Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.” —Henry David Thoreau I was in my thirties and already had children before I even decided on a career.

Now, as I meander into old age, I know that nothing in life has transcended my love of Nature and profound desire to be engaged in it. Gardening is the means for that engagement and teaching, the vehicle for sharing the good feelings it evoked.

As a grandmother now I think a great deal, often despairingly, about the damage we have done to the Earth. I wonder what it will be like for my grandchildren as they grow up. Two recent experiences have given me great hope for their future and a role for myself in the process of shaping it.

Gardeners take the lead Past practices may just be the yellow brick road to the future, and not an imagined one. Both experiences that supported my personal quest to understand Nature’s ways and commitment to translate that knowledge into actions that would inspire others to be nature stewards centered around the ancient practice of seed-saving.

T h e f i rs t ex p e r i e n c e involved attending an organic seed-saving conference in the Pacific Northwest. I saw the listing for the event on-line and, in an impulsive moment, registered for it. Only later,

April 2012 when I had examined the agenda more closely, did I realize that I might have made a serious error. Though a passionate gardener, I feared I was getting in over my head. I would be among crop breeders, experienced farmers and university scientists. Not belonging to any of these groups, I felt much trepidation about participating. I even considered requesting a refund.

But, logic prevailed and I convinced myself that I was bound to gain something from either the content of the conference or the networking opportunities it afforded.

Besides, it was still a good excuse to visit my sister in West Seattle.

Much to my surprise and pleasure, I returned home with a notebook full of ideas and was truly energized to start saving seeds in earnest. I might even make the leap to selecting seeds and using them to breed plants suited to our region.

As a result of the four days in snowy Port Townsend, I also began to contemplate how to creatively integrate my new knowledge about seeds and the politics of seed saving into my school programs, summer day camps and public visits to my sustainable garden.

I was clearly ready to begin the next phase of my life and the conference had been transformative in this respect.

I proudly wear a t-shirt with the conference theme on the back promoting the vision of the sponsoring organization: “Ad v a n c i n g t h e e t h i c a l development and stewardship of seed.”

Wearing it is my personal recognition of the gift of life that is in each seed, our life’s

dependence upon them, and the need to protect germplasm from loss (not just for us but for other living things as well).

From reading just about everything horticultural I could get my hands on, I already understood the basics of botany, soil care and plantpollinator associations. But seed-saving with the goal of fostering bio-regionally adapted food plants—now that was something new.

The conference provided a refresher course on genetics and reinforced the importance of seed saving to food security world-wide. I learned that s e e d l i b ra r i e s a re b e i n g established across the country, seed exchanges are becoming increasingly common and that internship opportunities are available to teach the next generation of farmers. I also found out that there is such a thing as seed school.

Seed saving and growing out seed are the logical next step when one is a serious gardener.

In fact, seed saving requires the same skills that a gardener a l re a d y p o s s e s s e s, w i t h perhaps a bit more discipline necessary in the record-keeping and storage departments.

Careful observation, patience, intuition, creativity, awareness of the need to rotate crops, and respect for the soil ecosystem are some of the items in the skill set. You are ready to go with these skills, a willingness to provide the labor, and the funds to make a limited investment in supplies and equipment.

Local foundation helps fund school projects

Real estate professionals belonging to the non-profit organization SaveCASchools are contributing a portion of every commission to help fund local school projects.

By partnering with real estate professionals, local businesses, and the San Ramon

Valley Education Foundation, the organization’s hopes are to build a stronger educational community. The general purpose of the corporation is to assist public schools by collecting donations from people and entities that share a desire to help educate the children of California.

Created in 2004, the foundation has even survived the last few years’ down real estate market and is beginning to ramp up once more with sales improving and business s u r ro u n d i n g re a l e s t a t e transactions in an upswing.

Participants are enthusiastic about contributing to the schools.

Founder Jason Brown of Stonecastle Land and Home Financial states, “I am proud to say that I contribute to our local schools. The San Ramon Valley Unified School District and its staff work so hard and they’re committed to supplying the best education for the children. It seems that every year they [the schools] are faced with more cut-backs.

Children’s Hospital Oakland Announces Plans challenges that threaten its to Rebuild and Modernize ability to continue providing As it enters a year of celebration for its 100th anniversary of serving children’s health needs, Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland announced that it is beginning a new planning process to rebuild and modernize its hospital to meet the demands of seismic regulations and improve facilities for children, adolescents and their families. “ We a re h o n o re d t o celebrate our 100th anniversary this year,” said Dr. Bert Lubin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Hospital.

“Now we need to ensure that we are here for our patients for the next century and beyond by providing modern and seismically compliant buildings and technology.”

Lubin estimated that modernizing the hospital will cost $425 million. He said some funding has been identified, but more money must be raised to meet costs. One of the primary goals of the upgrade in the hospital is to maximize the use of existing property.

“We are in the conceptual stages right now. We will be meeting with all the interested and impacted parties, patients and their parents, doctors and nurses, neighbors and our community,” Lubin said. “We want their input and ideas to make this an outstanding hospital for children in the Bay Area and beyond.”

Children’s Hospital Oakland, the oldest independent pediatric facility between Seattle and Los Angeles, faces significant

specialized care to the greater community. In addition to rigorous state-mandated seismic safety standards, the hospital faces a critical shortage of private patient rooms, outdated facilities, and the need to adapt to changing technology.

Conceptual plans for the hospital renovations that will be shared in the coming months include retaining the earthquakecompliant portions of the hospital, building new facilities that will meet seismic code requirements and keeping the height of any new buildings consistent with existing facilities to reduce the impact on neighbors.

Last year, the hospital recorded more than 200,000 outpatient, 11,000 inpatient and 50,000 emergency room visits.

These demands are one reason why the hospital, Northern California’s only freestanding designated Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, must update its facilities to meet the demands of future generations of young patients.

“We are proud of the outstanding patient care we have offered to the local community for the past century, and we look forward to continue providing outstanding tertiary care services to our community utilizing new, state-of-the-art facilities,” said Lubin.

The hospital expects to develop its plans with community input and start the environmental review process in 2012, hoping to gain approval for the Master Plan in 2013 and have it financed and built in phases by 2019.

Summer enrichment program themes meet every taste

When parents imagine summer camp, they often picture cabins, sleeping bags, campfires and hikes – but with a wide-variety of camps now available, parents and their children have many more summer options to choose from.

While there are the typical cabins-in-the-woods summer vacations available for kids and teens, there are many other options, too.

Children who are more into sports, performing arts, dance or music can attend a summer camp tailored to their interests. Not being fond of the outdoors doesn’t have to be a summer camp deal breaker. Children, who would rather spend their summers furthering their education, learning to play chess or boosting their IQ, can go to a camp especially designed for that purpose.

The best part? All of these different types of camps are available locally, according to the city of San Ramon website, www.ci.sanramon.ca.us, which features sports, performing arts and enrichment camps for 2012.

San Ramon’s Camp Central allows parents to select activities from a menu of individual camp choices using only the activities and times that they need, according to the website.

This saves parents from working around the camp’s schedule and allows their children to sample a variety of day-camp activities without going away to overnight camp. Dance, music, theater and hybrid camps, which combine two areas of art in one, are available for elementary, middle and high school students, according to the website.

In Danville, registration for the Town’s many summer camp offerings are filling up fast. Parents who’d like to enroll their child in one of the Town’s camps, such as Drama Camp, Cooking Camp or Science Camp, should act quickly before the camps fill up.

Spring is here at last! For some allergy sufferers this is not a welcome season. It is estimated that 20% of the population has allergic disease which may include allergic

rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, eczema, and food allergy. An allergy is a sensitivity to plants, animal dander, foods, or other environmental substances such as dust mites. Allergies

historically, now only 15 plants and 8 animals constitute 90% of human food; 12 plant crops make up 75% of the food consumed in the world; 3 plants – rice, wheat and maize - are now relied upon for more than half of the world’s food.

Multinational corporations have acquired many seed companies, limiting production of many varieties and offering instead their own patented genetically modified seeds (GMOS).

Land grant universities were in part created to provide seeds for farmers but most of their research now supports further privatization of what was once part of the public domain.

So why save seeds?

First of all, save seeds to reverse the decline in seed diversity implied by the facts just mentioned, to combat hunger and encourage selfsufficiency locally and globally, to support the culinary traditions of different cultures, to promote biodiversity of plant species in general, to foster healthy local food systems with bio-regionally adapted crops, to ensure the availability of a particular type of desired seed, and finally, because it’s engaging, educational, challenging, and just plain fun. It is a great way for your family and you to connect with Nature, and it keeps the most basic element needed for food production in the hands of the diverse many rather than those of an influential few.

Seed saving also gives r i s e t o s t o r i e s o f g re a t human interest and builds relationships within and between communities.

For me it is another way of working with nature and appreciating its brilliance and beauty. Working with seeds inspires awe and feeds my spirit. The Organic Seed Alliance conference and Seed School were life-changing experiences and will certainly influence both my vocation as an environmental educator and avocation as a gardener s e e k i n g s e l f - s u f f i c i e n cy.

The OSA conference had provided the motivation and background on seed saving and its importance in terms of global food issues. Seed School gave me the tools to apply my new understanding.

Since real students never graduate, it didn’t seem odd to me be going back to school.

The reactions of those with whom I shared my excitement while not surprising, were disappointing. I watched eyes glaze over as I mentioned my new (consuming for me) interest. I had to respond over and over again to the same question “What is Seed School?” I guess it just shows how far we Americans have come from being connected w i t h t h e re s o u rc e s t h a t sustain us.

With seed saving I am taking a number in the long line of human history; stepping right into life eternal and expecting to love every moment of it! This is not just

a new hobby – it is a passion.

Historically, Mercedes products have enjoyed genetic markers that distinguish the brand. Bank vault construction, sumptuous seats and Baroque trim flourishes are descriptors that come to mind. Even blindfolded, you could climb into any Mercedes and tell that you weren’t in a BMW or a Lexus.

But along with the Mercedes positives tagged a number of negatives, like weightiness, complexity, and dulled reflexes that drove potential customers into competitors’ showrooms.

Mercedes has answered many of those issues by redesigning their C Class Coupe for 2012.

From the outside, the new Coupe is distinguished by the deftness of its visual language. Mercedes stylists have concocted a benchmark treat, with swooping roofline and crisp flank creases emphasizing the car’s low 55.8 inch height.

There’s a delicacy inherent in the new coupe’s design that has been absent from Mercedes products since the SL 230 debuted nearly half a century ago. The lighter touch is also evident once you slip inside the cabin. The standard front sports seats are less monumental than before, more cosseting than ever. Though reduced in visual

mass, the driver’s seat offers 10-way power adjustment, 4 modes of lumbar support, and 3 memory settings (for seat, mirror and steering wheel position).

In keeping with the airiness of the Coupe’s redesign, the standard Panorama Sunroof adds immeasurably to the livability of the interior. It stretches from the windshield header nearly to the rear window frame. The front portion slides back or tilts open, while the rear part remains fixed. From the outside, the black glass expanse adds dynamic interest to the lines of the Coupe by visually diminishing height.

From the inside, the Panorama Sunroof is a breezeless delight when open, a welcome window when closed.

Although you may select a number of engine options for the Coupe, from a 201hp inline-4 to a 481hp V8, the 302hp V-6 in our test car provides a perfect compromise between decent urge and good fuel economy (19 MPG City/28 MPG Highway). One reason for the immediate snap of the V-6 is the standard 7-speed Driver Adaptive Automatic Transmission, which keeps the relatively small displacement 3.5 liter engine in the sweet

spot of its power range at all times. You can rely on the gearbox to kick down to a lower gear without hesitation when you need passing power.

But I enjoyed selecting the manual setting from the floor mounted lever, and assuming shift duties via the paddleequipped steering wheel.

Be sure to purchase the optional “315 Advanced Agility Package” which consists of 18 inch twin-spoke AMG alloy wheels shod with Continental’s latest SportContact 3 tires (225/35R18 front, 255/35R18 rear), shift paddles on the steering wheel (left side for upshifts, right side for downshifts), and heightened feedback steering that Mercedes calls “Parameter Steering.” This 315 Package is a stellar deal at $1,400, converting the Coupe into a real driver’s machine.

Your first clue about the Coupe’s morphed personality comes when you settle behind its redesigned steering wheel. It now sports a flat bottom, and sculpted, perforated leather grips at 9 and 12 o’clock. These grips are severely indented like the fluted handholds invented 30 years ago by Emerson Fittipaldi for his line of aftermarket “Fitti” steering wheels. Finding this ergonomic brilliance on a production Mercedes comes as something of a shock, but
