History comes alive at many sites throughout Montgomery County

Center for Pennsylvania German Studies at Dewees Tavern, Trappe

AMONG THE COUNTLESS

treasures of Montgomery County, the glimmering gem that is Valley Forge National Historical Park is where visitors can retrace the footprints of American history.

The Continental Army spent the winter of 1777–1778 here, right along the Schuylkill River. The soldiers battled unpredictable weather, disease, debilitating mud and dwindling food supplies. Today, you can see reconstructed log cabins where the troops lived, the house where Gen. George Washington was headquartered and the memorials commemorating their service. Curious about archaeological restoration happening in real time? Historic Trappe is the place. Three properties are available for tours: the Center for Pennsylvania German Studies (in Dewees Tavern), the Henry Muhlenberg House andthe Speaker’s House. The rotating galleries and museums feature the vibrant legacy of local German Pennsylvanians like the Muhlenberg family. This includes the family residence of the first speaker of the .S. House of Representatives, Frederick Muhlenberg.

Two Historic Trappe properties are open on Saturdays and Sundays. The Speaker’s House is open by appointment only; however, there is a farm stand open seasonally at the property, Saturday mornings from June through October.

The Montco History Pass is a free resource that will help you navigate historical sites in Montgomery County. Check in at each of the 15 locations via the mobile-exclusive passport to collect points and redeem prizes. There’s no need to download an app.

More examples of architecture that will render you speechless can be found in the Bryn Athyn Historic District.
