Welcome to Montgomery County’s Official Dining Guide
Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board’s President & CEO, Mike Bowman, isn’t your average foodie—he’s a former executive chef with a serious passion for food.
Here are Mike’s Likes:
1. Growing up in Philly, pizza wasn’t just dinner— it was a way of life. A self-proclaimed crustand-sauce critic, Mike swears no one gets it quite right… except Montco. From coal-fired classics to wood-oven gems, Montco’s pizza game is fire. It’s still his #1 go-to.
2. Coming in close behind? Asian cuisine. From sushi to Korean BBQ, Vietnamese dishes to authentic Chinese fare, he’s all in. His appreciation runs deep—his first job was washing dishes at a Chinese restaurant in Northeast Philly, a gig that led him to culinary school. The heart of a busy kitchen? Still his happy place.

3. Valley Forge Freedom from Hunger Food Drive: Mike’s also incredibly proud of the team’s work with Freedom from Hunger, an annual food drive that provides support to the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN). Through this partnership, funds are raised to purchase essential, high-quality food for families facing hunger across Montgomery County, offering a helping hand to those who need it most.

Shelby Fahrni, owner of The Cooking Studio and Chopped competitor, is stirring up the culinary world with creativity and skill. We chatted about her passion for teaching, community connections, and what’s next.
From Maysville, Missouri, to Telford, Pennsylvania – what inspired your journey into the culinary world, and how did it lead you to establish The Cooking Studio?
My journey into the culinary world started at age four in Maysville, Missouri, when I saw Julia Child truss a chicken on TV. Something clicked inside me—I immediately turned to my mom and proudly demonstrated how to truss our own Cornish game hens! From that early moment, I was hooked. Later, in culinary school, I found myself drawn not only to cooking but especially to teaching. I admired the instructors who joyfully shared their culinary wisdom, and I knew right away that’s who I wanted to become. Teaching has always been my happiest place, so establishing The Cooking Studio in Telford was a natural next step— combining my passion for cooking with my love for guiding others to find confidence, joy, and capability in their own kitchens.
With a background in fine dining, how do you translate complex techniques into approachable lessons for home cooks?
“
What has been the most rewarding part of bringing hands-on cooking education to Montgomery County?
The most rewarding part has absolutely been creating community. Bringing hands-on cooking education to Montgomery County has allowed us to connect with people from all walks of life over a shared love of food. It’s incredible to see strangers become friends around our tables, bonding over new flavors, laughter, and the shared joy of creating something delicious together. To me, cooking classes are about so much more than recipes—they’re about building meaningful connections, one meal at a time.
” It’s incredible to see strangers become friends around our tables, bonding over new flavors, laughter, and the shared joy of creating something delicious together.
The biggest takeaway I’ve brought from fine dining into teaching home cooks is that anyone can become a great cook. Fine dining often feels intimidating, but at its core, it’s just about mastering simple techniques and layering flavors thoughtfully. In my classes, I break down complex methods into manageable steps, showing my students that these skills are completely achievable, no matter what your kitchen experience. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch someone discover their own capabilities and confidence through cooking.
Have you partnered with any local farms, markets, or businesses to source ingredients for your cooking classes?
Yes! We’ve recently partnered with Living Hope farms in Harleysville, and I’ve always bought beef from Hershberger Heritage Farms in Sellersville! I grew up on a farm, so supporting local farms is a non-negotiable for The Cooking Studio.
What’s your favorite dish to teach, and what makes it special to you?
My favorite dish to teach is handmade pasta. It’s special because it captures what cooking is truly about—simplicity, technique, and joy. There’s something magical about watching students realize how easily they can transform a handful of humble ingredients like flour and eggs into a beautiful meal. Pasta-making embodies the essence of confidence in the kitchen: anyone can do it, and the moment students taste what they’ve made, you see that spark of pride and possibility light up their faces.
What’s a hidden gem in Montgomery County that more people should know about—food-related or otherwise?
Vietnam Café- literally in our back yard. They have some of the best Vietnamese food I’ve ever had!
Vituperio Bread baking studio in Lansdale- This is where I send anyone asking about sourdough classes!
What are some of your favorite Montgomery County restaurants or food spots when you’re not in the kitchen?
Autana in Ardmore, Noodle 88 in Sounderton, The Butcher & Barkeep in Harleysville, Blue Bell Inn in Blue Bell, Blossom Café in Skippack.

What vision do you have for the future of The Cooking Studio and its role in the Telford community?
My vision for The Cooking Studio is to keep deepening our roots in Telford, creating a place where community thrives through shared experiences around food. Nothing brings people together quite like cooking and eating together, and I’m passionate about helping people feel confident and capable in their own kitchens. Right now, I’m also excited about launching our new online cooking platform. This will help answer questions I often get from home cooks—like how to thoughtfully plan weekly menus, pair side dishes with different meals, and creatively repurpose ingredients throughout the week to minimize food waste. Additionally, we’re thrilled to expand our culinary immersion trips to include Mexico, Italy, and Jordan starting in 2026. These trips will give our community the chance to explore global flavors firsthand, deepening their connection to food and culture. I truly believe cooking well at home—or anywhere in the world— should feel empowering, accessible, and fun, and these new offerings help us fulfill that vision.

Having competed on Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games” & “Chopped,” how has that influenced your teaching or business approach? GGG and Chopped both taught me the importance of believing in yourself and how to keep going, no matter how much pressure I’m under.
“ ” Nothing brings people together quite like cooking and eating together, and I’m passionate about helping people feel confident and capable in their own kitchens.
After a day of teaching and cooking, what’s your go-to meal at home?
Honestly? Ice cream! After a day spent cooking and teaching, ice cream is my joyful, effortless treat—and a reminder that great meals don’t always have to be complicated. But on days when I want something more nourishing (and adult!), my go-to is a homemade copycat version of Cava’s honey harissa chicken bowl. Every Sunday, I prep ingredients like roasted veggies(whatever was dying at the bottom of the fridge and needed to be used ASAP), honeyharissa chicken, pickled onions, and hummus, so during the week I can quickly build bowls that feel both delicious and doable. Having easy but vibrant options ready in the fridge reminds me—and hopefully anyone reading—that enjoying great food at home can be simple and stress-free.
Have you noticed a growing interest in cooking classes among Montco residents? What are people most excited to learn?
Yes! Pasta Classes! I think people are seeing them all over Instagram and searching for ‘cooking classes near me’.
