Serve.

Every year, teams of VCS students and faculty use their vacation breaks to travel the world, serving those in need through our WALK (Warriors Advancing the Lord’s Kingdom) program. Some of our past service projects include trips to Africa, Thailand, Mexico, and Chile.

The Skyway and Leigh campuses not only provide a safe learning environment, but they are also home to some of the finest state-of-the-art facilities in the Bay Area. Students use and enjoy a bio-safety lab, satellite tracking station, piano lab, black box theatre, green-screen room, two athletic stadiums, recording studio, observatory, Student Life Center, two gyms, kiln and ceramics rooms, nanotechnology/microscopy lab, and an olympic-sized swimming pool.

Our Faculty and Staff

Our God is a global God, and we aim to reect that. With 2,750 students at Valley Christian Schools, our student body is a blend of various cultures and experiences, creating a welcoming and engaging educational environment.

We believe that Christian education is more than a career; it’s a calling.

Fifty-six percent of our faculty have a master's and/or doctoral degree, and our amazing staff is passionate about building up students to become men and women of God. We also boast a large number of faculty and staff alumni employees, with 44 VCS graduates serving in positions on all three campuses.

Our International Student Program brings students from across the globe to our campus, including such countries as Brazil, China, Korea, and Vietnam. Many students who graduate from this program have moved on to attend excellent universities, including Johns Hopkins, Pepperdine, Cornell, UCLA, and UC Berkeley.

Hannah

Hannah might look like a typical first grader who loves to play Star Wars on the playground with her friends, but her heart to serve those around her and even across the world is anything but ordinary.

A few weeks before her sixth birthday, Hannah told her parents she wanted to donate her birthday presents to Grace Public Schools in India.

“I looked in my room and I had so many toys, so I wanted to give my presents to other kids who didn’t have any.”

It was in chapel at Valley Christian Elementary School that Hannah learned about Grace Public Schools and decided to do what she could to help. “The people in India were trying to raise money to make a great school for kids, and I gave them my toys so they could have fun things to play with.”

Hannah loves school and wants the kids in India to go to one just like hers. “This school is great because the teachers here are really nice and they help us learn.” Hannah has learned lessons in math and science, but she also demonstrates how to serve her global community by giving. “At Christmas we had a toy drive with the firemen, and they even came with their fire truck! It was so cool.”

Principal Gabe Guven hopes all VCES students develop Hannah's spirit of service and experience the joy of giving.

“When I turned six, I was happy because I saw all those happy faces of the kids I gave my birthday toys to, so I did the same thing when I turned seven. It feels good to make other people smile.”

Micah

Volleyball player, concert pianist, space explorer—there’s not much Micah Kim hasn’t been involved in during his time at Valley Christian Junior High.

“It’s been great to experience all of the possibilities at Valley. I’ve had so much fun with everything I’m involved in—I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t love it.”

Possibilities in the International Space Station (ISS) program caught his eye early. “I was looking at course descriptions for classes at the end of sixth grade, and it looked really cool. It’s something you don’t normally see, especially at a junior high.”

Micah has had some amazing experiences at VCJH, including taking a trip with the ISS class to Seattle to meet with the engineers of the Microsoft Corporation and even speaking at the keynote for the Microsoft World Conference. He thinks future students will thrive as the school continues to lead the way for schools across the United States.

“We have great sports facilities and coaches who support you; our music program is really accomplished; and the AMSE program continues to grow. It makes me excited at the thought of coming back one day and seeing where it's gone from here."

By eighth grade, Micah was leading the software team responsible for creating platforms for science experiments aboard the ISS. “Being a team leader gave me the opportunity not only to learn, but also to lead others in the process. We were able to work as a team to make something together.”

Valley Christian Junior High School is an academically challenging yet nurturing educational environment where junior high students learn through a comprehensive approach to all subjects, preparing them for the extensive college-preparatory program at Valley Christian High School.

Lyndi Becoming a nurse was never part of Lyndi Hausmann’s plan, and while the 2008 graduate might not have seen it coming, her teachers at Valley Christian High School did.

This is a ministry Lyndi hopes to make global as overseas missions are her passion; she is thrilled VCHS students can experience this opportunity.

“My teachers recognized something in me before I saw it in myself, and they gave me leadership opportunities to develop my gifts. Helping people feel loved, listened to, and cared for—those were skills I strengthened at VCHS and ones I use every day as a nurse.”

“The students today are so lucky—I wish VCHS had the WALK program when I was in high school! I went to India on a missions trip in college, and it changed my life.”

Prepared for the academic rigors of nursing school and secure in her giftings, Lyndi is now living out her calling as a nurse in Dallas.

“I can literally use my hands to help people and make a significant impact on their lives. It’s the most fulfilling job; it’s become more of a ministry than a career for me.”

It was while working in India as a nurse that God gave Lyndi a new dream.

“I want my life to have an impact on those who are uncared for; it’s why I became a nurse and why I’m back in school getting my doctorate. Seeing God’s faithfulness and provision in my nursing career is what has given me confidence to pursue opening a clinic overseas. It all comes back to the foundation I built at Valley Christian, and my teachers being an example of what it looks like to follow God.”

Incorporated through after-school offerings and classroom curriculum, our A3 approach allows students to explore all that VCS has to offer and gives them endless avenues to lead, serve, and impact the world.

“As much as we help students excel in athletics and in the arts, the faculty doesn’t hold back on academic rigor; I know my teachers didn't," explains English teacher Ryan Eshoff, a 2008 VCHS graduate, as well as a graduate of UCLA and Stanford. "The students here today leave Valley prepared for college emotionally, spiritually, and academically.”

Many of our unique academic specialities at VCS are offered through our STEM education program, the Applied Math, Science, and Engineering (AMSE) Institute. AMSE provides students with a K-12 pipeline of inspiration, instruction, and experience so that they might become successful innovators and world changers.

Monica For most students, doing scientific research on cancer cells wouldn’t be their favorite memory from high school; then again, 2014 graduate Monica Bodd isn’t most students.

“My teachers helped me fall in love with science, and I just couldn’t get enough of it. Even now in college, I’m working on the same research!”

Starting at Valley Christian High School in AMSE’s inaugural year, Monica was part of the first scientific research class, a class that changed her life. “I never thought of myself as a scientist, but the class opened my eyes to a passion I never knew I had.

I would spend all afternoon in the lab running tests and feel such a sense of excitement. It also helps that we have some of the most amazing research facilities of any high school in the world.” Though the top-notch facilities and world-class faculty were integral in the success of her research project, Monica’s motivation for her research was much more personal.

“In high school, my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, and I saw firsthand how the disease affected people. I always wanted to help people, but watching my family go through that loss motivated me to use my research to lead the way in making a difference in patients’ lives.”

Now a pre-med student at Rice University, Monica says her time in AMSE not only shaped her future goals, but provided her with amazing experiences. “I loved the monthly seminars because they gave me a glimpse into different scientific and engineering careers, and they allowed me to make connections with the speakers—one that even led to an internship with NASA.” In the end, what Monica is most grateful for is the impact that AMSE, the faculty, and the staff had on her life. “My time at Valley shaped who I am. I learned what my passions were and how to follow them.”

Discover AMSE is the elementary branch of the AMSE Institute and introduces young learners to the world of math, science, and engineering.

Highlights • Engaging K-5th grade hands-on science curriculum with experiments on sound waves, anatomy, and molecules • Students Optimizing Academic Results (SOAR) Mathematics is a unique, accelerated math course for qualifying fourth and fifth grade students preparing them to compete in the Math Olympiad • Individualized web-based math programs for all grades • 7 specialized academic programs • Exciting award-winning offerings such as coding class and robotics

“Our program is designed to foster a love of science and learning.” Cara Galleher, the elementary AMSE and hands-on science teacher, is still passionate about instilling that love in her students after almost 20 years of teaching. “I get to create these fantastic lessons with presentations and videos, and apply the material with labbased learning. Students love it because it’s fun, diverse, and gives them a taste for all of the different disciplines of science.” But Cara sees her job as more than just teaching kindergarteners about atom and molecule interaction. “We teach from a biblical perspective, and don’t have to have science stand isolated from the Bible. It allows me to make lessons worth teaching and gives students a spiritual application.”

Junior AMSE provides students with incredible facilities, outstanding curriculum, and unique opportunities to inspire future mathematicians, scientists, doctors, and engineers all while preparing them for our high school AMSE program. In addition to ten after-school offerings ranging from robotics to agriculture, the program also offers opportunities to enter elite competitions, participate in an International Space Station (ISS) project, and complete advanced work in our nanotechnology/microscopy lab.

Accomplishments Partnering with the high school, junior high students in our ISS program designed a 3D-printed game for astronauts to play aboard the ISS.

• From making it to the semi-finals in the “Math Madness” competition to having six students place at the ACSI Math Olympics, our mathematics department has much to be proud of.

• Our Junior High Robotics team took the overall championship at FIRST LEGO League’s NorCal Silicon Valley District Championship and placed 1st in Strategy and Innovation at the FIRST LEGO League’s state-level competition.

“I’m not only teaching students how to keep an aquarium, but stirring in them an interest in the ocean.”

“So much has changed since I went here,” Brian Clemons, VCS “lifer” and current Vice Principal, observes of his alma mater. “It’s a privilege to share with students the things that God has developed in my life.” Brian has a great deal to share. In addition to founding the marine biology program, Brian also serves as the junior high chaplain.

High School AMSE students receive unique training from industry professionals, helping them gain real world experience in the areas of applied mathematics, science, and engineering and giving them the tools to become future leaders in their industry.

Highlights • 25 clubs and programs, including after-school opportunities in astronomy, robotics, satellite tracking and development, rocketry, and marine biology • AMSE majors and minors access more in-depth training and focused course work, enabling students to develop a competitive portfolio of work throughout high school

• Students access all of our equipment and facilities, including our nanotechnology/ microscopy lab, bio-safety lab, one-of-akind observatory with a SchmidtCassegrain telescope, satellite tracking station, multiple 3D printers, laser cutter, 1,000-gallon aquarium, clean room, and electronics laboratory

“The AMSE faculty all come from amazing professional backgrounds and bring so much to the table.” The faculty has teachers like Howell Ivy, whose résumé includes over seven years in the Air Force and president of Sega Enterprises, USA. Still, Howell thinks the faculty’s biggest contribution isn’t their expertise, but their heart for the students. “We’re all here because it’s our passion—we have a desire to help these kids do incredible things.”

One of these accomplishments includes being the first high school to launch student-built science experiments to the ISS. “I want to give students the ability to think outside the box. Or, I guess in this case, think inside the box,” Howell chuckles, referencing the ISS team’s cube-shaped experiments. “What’s important to me is that they gain the skill set for problem solving, which they can apply to any major in college and their future careers.”

Duke never thought he’d be spending his high school days playing in jazz festivals or traveling to China with the band; though looking back, it’s been a long time coming.

“Growing up, my mom used to show me videos of her performing with the marching band. I always thought, 'Cool, I want to do that!' " Playing in the concert band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Duke found all kinds of different ways to serve the department and his fellow band mates before deciding to apply to be drum major.

“The past drum majors have been good friends of mine, and it was great to watch them serve the band and be there for everyone when they needed it.

Even though I’m not usually the main leader, I like to lead by example and thought I could do that here.” The example he hopes to set is based on how he’s seen his instructors in the Conservatory program lead. “My teachers have shown me that if you are passionate and love what you are doing, then students will have a better time playing.”

All of these experiences have helped to shape Duke, not only affecting his music career, but also his future. “I came into Valley thinking of music as a hobby. But this past year I’ve realized I want to study music education in college and become a music teacher. I can't give this up—I love it too much.”

“Everyday I feel so blessed to be at such a wonderful school; while other schools are cutting arts programs, Valley really encourages them.” As both a mom to two VCES students and the Visual Arts Chair for the Conservatory program, Jill Carlson says being a K-12 school is one of the biggest advantages the program has to offer. “Sharing teachers with different campuses ensures continuity and is part of the reason we have such an awesome program.” Being a teacher on both campuses, Jill doesn’t play favorites, but admits there are plenty of perks to working at the elementary school. “The kids get so excited to see their art hanging and to show it to their families. It’s really cool.” That’s what it’s all about for Jill, getting students excited about art and providing outlets to explore their God-given talents. “We want to make art accessible to as many students as want it; that’s the Consevatory’s philosophy, and mine as well.”

Our Junior Conservatory offers young artists the opportunity to further develop their God-given talents, with a full range of classes in dance arts, music, theatre arts and visual arts.

“Everyday is an audition.” That’s what Michelle McLaughlin tells her students as they warm up for her advanced dance class in the Conservatory program.

“I teach them that it’s not just about how they dance; [it’s about] how important humility and hard work are.”

Michelle knows that importance first hand, receiving her MFA in dance and choreography from Sarah Lawrence College and having spent years as a professional dancer in New York. She is just one of many faculty who have come to Valley Christian from a professional background, and she understands the rigor of the professional performing world. “Our program has a lot of working student-artists. We're really supportive of outside endeavors creating an environment where they can get out there and make a name for Christian artists." Michelle is passionate about this impact, explaining, "The most important thing we can do is shine our light and be noticed for having something different about us.”

The Conservatory of the Arts provides high school students with the opportunity to further refine their artistic talents with individualized, advanced training in a professional and inspiring environment taught by accomplished artists.

But you have to take it seriously to have fun.” Brooke Novak knows just how much hard work it takes to have fun in theatre, completing her MFA at the University of San Diego and spending time in New York as an actor and director before coming back to VCHS. “When I was a student here, Valley taught me how theatre and faith go together. It was an enormously valuable lesson for me, and one that I am passionate about passing on to my students.” The 2003 VCHS alumna says it’s one of the things she loves most about teaching. “We’re preparing the next generation of Christian artists, encouraging them to go out and redefine what that looks like…to figuring out how the art we create can be used to bless others.”

The Athletic Department strives not only to build up teams and players, but also to teach life lessons through disciplined training at the highest level of competition.

Giving student-athletes of all ages a chance to participate and develop a love for sports, our Athletics program also has on-campus specialists to assist with the college recruitment process.

Daniel Courage, discipline, integrity are written on the walls of the baseball club house. Daniel Hall, JV coach and VCHS alumnus, knows these words well, especially since he’s the one who put them there. “Every year the baseball team focuses on a different theme, and a few years ago we started putting them up on the walls. It’s really cool to stand here and see them all,” the 2007 graduate says. “I learned a lot about living out these principles as a player, and now as a coach I’m learning even more.”

During his time here in the Athletics program, he learned more than just playing catch, but also preparation for life.

“I learned how to be competitive and strive for perfection. Not only that, I learned how to deal with failure.”

Going on to play outfield and third base in college, Daniel also majored in criminal justice and set out to pursue a career in law enforcement. “Of course I had dreams of playing pro baseball,” Daniel laughs, “but even in high school, it was always my plan to become a police officer and make a positive impact on the community.”

The sense of community between the players and coaches at Valley is just one of the many reasons Daniel thinks the Athletics program boasts so many alumni coaches and volunteers, coming back to the school to make an impact. “I think all of the former players who come back do so because of the impact VCHS athletics had on their lives.

We want to give back that same experience to today's students."

Elementary School Elementary students participate in physical education twice a week, with a special lab for kindergarteners to further develop their motor skills. With ten different instructional units, students are able to grasp the fundamentals of a variety of sports, preparing them for junior high.

“We change units every three weeks, but the kids’ excitement is always the same. Whether it‘s jump rope, kickball, soccer, or basketball, they can’t wait for PE class.” Starting as the elementary PE teacher two years ago, Chelsea Shears ('00) loves watching her students develop a passion for sports and gain the life-long benefits of participating. “PE motivates students to stay active and have confidence in their abilities. They also learn so many great life lessons.” Learning those same lessons herself at VCS, Chelsea is thankful for the support she received from the Athletics department. “My coaches helped me not only excel in my sport, but also taught me about leadership, communication, team work, and a good work ethic. That’s what we really hope the kids take away from sports here.”

Little Warrior Nation Little Warrior Nation is an exciting extracurricular opportunity for VCES students to learn the fundamentals of a wide variety of sports from some of the best coaches and high school athletes in California.

VCJH participates at the highest level of competition in Santa Clara County. Offering a balanced program consisting of 22 teams competing in 12 different sports, our commitment is to hire coaches who model Christian values both on and off the athletic field and prepare our emerging student-athletes to be leaders in the community.

Human Performance Center Many of our student-athletes take advantage of the sport-specific workouts offered after school to receive training from our highly experienced coaching staff in the Human Performance Center (HPC).

“Playing sports, you learn lessons like responsibility, follow through, and teamwork.” VCJH Athletic Director Adam Gill has been part of the Athletics team here for over 13 years, with a passion for coaching and a desire to make an impact on students’ lives. “We want to train kids not just to be competent in a particular sport, but confident in their overall athletic abilities. Ultimately, we want them to be active and involved in some type of sport for the rest of their lives.”

Something else Adam hopes students will take with them is their sense of school pride, something he says he loves to see. “What brings me the most excitement is the look on the students’ faces when we’re passing out the team uniforms—they get so excited! Whether we win or lose, I know they’re proud to be wearing our colors and to be a Warrior.”

That’s why I started Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) my first year here. I was involved in FCA in college, and it was huge for me.
