Central Valley kids need and deserve the highest quality care. Your generosity helps purchase lifesaving equipment and recruit expert pediatric specialists, allowing Valley Children’s to meet the ever-increasing demand for services in the Central Valley. In recent years, philanthropy has been a key driver enabling Valley Children’s to enhance access to specialized pediatric care by establishing a network of Valley Children’s facilities along the Highway 99 corridor. Your philanthropy allows Valley Children’s to do something beyond treating patients.

These donations have helped patients, staff and family members stay safe and healthy, and no doubt given them a much-needed boost in the midst of additional screening precautions, testing and program changes that have affected all Valley Children’s Healthcare locations. We are grateful and humbled to have received these gifts to help us with our ongoing mission to continuously improve the health and wellbeing of children. Since mid-March of this year, the hospital has received these beneficial items (pictured) from more than 200 donors.

We have been incredibly moved by the generosity of our Central Valley community during the pandemic. Inspired by the

Giannini Legacy

A Powerful Tribute:

For 124 years, the Giannini companies were farming giants in the Central Valley. LeRoy was 16 when his father was killed in a train accident and, shortly after his high school graduation, he took over the family farming operation. Under his innovative leadership and steady, hard work, the family business grew to more than 2,000 acres of nectarines and plums, along with a processing plant in Dinuba.

Mr. Giannini was as generous as he was private.

Over the course of his lifetime, he made sizeable contributions to support educational and faith-based organizations in his community but his gifts were not widely publicized. Mr. Jim Burnett, longtime friend and employee of Mr. Giannini and the trustee to his estate, shared that, over the years, he would pay for life’s unexpected emergencies, pay to send their children to college and cover funeral expenses for every employee or family member. In Mr. Burnett’s words, Mr. Giannini was a remarkably generous man who ran his business as a family.

Mr. Giannini’s son, LeRoy A. Giannini, passed in 2018 and left more than $8 million to Valley Children’s in honor of his parents, Ruth E. and LeRoy G. Giannini.

Their generosity represented the largest single gift in the organization’s history. The new outpatient facility planned for construction on the Valley Children’s Hospital campus will be named in honor of the Giannini family to serve as a powerful tribute to their generosity.

Honoring a Legacy

For Generations

The estate of Donald Emil Gumz has donated $4 million to Valley Children’s. To honor Mr. Gumz’s legacy, Valley Children’s will be recognizing his generosity in a new outpatient center planned for construction on the Valley Children’s Hospital campus in Madera. “One of the great privileges of leading Valley Children’s Healthcare is witnessing firsthand the generosity of extraordinary individuals like Donald Gumz,” said Todd Suntrapak, President and CEO of Valley Children’s Healthcare.

Mr. Gumz was born and raised in Fresno to a family who had farmed grapes in California since the early 1900s. He graduated from Edison High School and spent his entire professional life as an accountant, first for a local developer and then with Vie-Del Winery

until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Gumz was remarkably generous, providing financial support to many causes he held close to his heart – including Valley Children’s, the Ronald McDonald House, Poverello House, Marjaree Mason Center and Fresno State’s Enology Department.

“Donald E. Gumz was a true son of the San Joaquin Valley,” said Dr. David Zoldoske, cousin of Mr. Gumz and trustee of his estate. “As part of his legacy, he wanted to provide for the greater Fresno region to leave it better than ever before...Mr. Gumz left a significant contribution to Valley Children’s knowing that improving the health of the young will positively benefit the Central Valley for generations to come.”

Gratefully Building a

Better Tomorrow

We thank the Central California Alliance for Health for their grant of $2.5 million to support construction of a new Valley Children’s facility in Merced. This remarkable investment by the Alliance is their most recent contribution to Valley Children’s to advance access to pediatric care in Merced County, having granted funds in recent years to support the recruitment of primary care providers, a food insecurity program, and the planning of the new Valley Children’s facility.

The Alliance is a Medi-Cal managed care health plan founded to improve access to health care for 340,000+ residents in Santa Cruz, Monterey and Merced counties. This donation plays a critical role in making the six-acre project in the City of Merced a reality. The new facility will feature primary and specialty care services, including maternal-fetal medicine services for expecting mothers with highrisk pregnancies. We truly appreciate the Alliance’s support of Valley Children’s goal to improve access to healthcare in Merced County.

Celebrating Gifts of

Transformation

On August 8, 2020, Valley Children’s Hospital celebrated Panda Cares Day and unveiled the Panda Cares Center of Hope, a specialized center dedicated to addressing children’s entire well-being, including their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs.

Made possible by donations from Panda Express guests and associates, there was a virtual surprise story time and a donation of hundreds of books to promote literacy.

“We are so thankful for Panda Express’ incredible commitment and generosity in supporting organizations that serve the health and education needs of children,” said Robert Saroyan.

As gestures of goodwill at the outset of this partnership, Panda Express donated $30,000 to support efforts to treat COVID-19 patients, $50,000 personally from Andrew and Peggy Cherng to support the Panda Cares Center of Hope and multiple donations of food to front-line staff. Over the past 11 years, Panda Express guests and associates from Merced to Porterville have raised more than $2.5 million for Valley Children’s.

Community Support Outpouring of

As the spread of COVID-19 reached the United States, Valley Children’s Healthcare acted quickly to institute a one-time cancellation of Kids Day on the event’s 33rd anniversary.

The community response was overwhelming, both thanking Valley Children’s for putting health and safety first, and simultaneously encouraging the organization to observe Kids Day in some form as a Central Valley tradition. In response to this outpouring of community support for Kids Day, Valley Children’s invited Kids Day volunteers and supporters to consider donating via text or online during a special “Kids Day: Digital Edition” campaign that was held on March 10.

The response was truly remarkable. When the last contribution was counted, the community had raised an astounding $243,000 to support patients and families at Valley Children’s Hospital.

We offer our sincere gratitude to all – sponsors, site leaders, school administrators and volunteers – who made this result possible.

The significance of Kids Day and its vital financial support to Valley Children’s was paramount this year in the midst of the pandemic. Through the extraordinary efforts of the team, we were able to convey Valley Children’s message of hope through a great virtual experience for everyone while also raising critical funds for the hospital. We could not be more proud.
