It’s happening every day in homes all over the world: fear tinkling.

The dog is so submissive and fearful that he piddles in an instant when triggered by something.

What turns on the tinkle? Several things can cause this unwanted behavior, including a loud noise, a visitor reaching out toward the dog, or the dog’s owner pointing and yelling.

By any other name, fear tinkling is called “submissive wetting,” and it is common among shy and fearful dogs. Something frightens the dog, and he wets out of fear. So let’s explore this behavior, see what causes it, and determine how to solve or minimize it.

We will start with the dog’s temperament.

What has caused the dog to be shy and fearful? It could be a number of things: bad breeding, lack of socialization or too much discipline. You may have adopted a dog and don’t know his history. He may have been mistreated. And, of course, it’s important to know that your dog hears five times better than you do, so if you raise your voice or point at him while saying something like, “You bad dog, you,” that will only heighten the fear of your alreadyfrightened dog. And this causes more fear tinkling.

The only way to solve or at least minimize the problem is to build up your dog’s self-confidence. And the only way to do this is for you to be patient, kind and loving.

Start the process by socializing your dog.

When he meets new people and dog-friendly dogs, praise him and tell him what a good boy he is. Use only positive reinforcement. And be sure to train your dog. This is very important.

Dogs love to learn and to reach their potential. Submissive wetting is most common when you answer the door or when you come home after being gone for a while. For example, when the doorbell rings and your trained dog accompanies you to the door, you will be able to tell him to SIT and STAY. Then praise him and open the door. Your well-trained dog will remain in the sit position, and this makes it difficult for him to cower and tinkle out of fear.

More Mailbag Questions Last week, instead of writing a column centered around just one Social Security topic, I decided to just reach into my electronic mailbag (my email inbox) and answer whatever questions I pulled out of there. But I ran out of column space before I ran out of questions. So today, here's more random Social Security questions and answers.

Q: I filed for my Social Security retire-

ment benefits over the phone this morning.

But to be honest, I wasn’t all that impressed with the clerk who took care of me. Now I’m worried that he will mess up the amount of my Social Security benefit and I won’t be paid correctly. Is there anything I can do?

A:

What you can do is stop worrying. Local Social Security representatives aren’t really involved in the computation of your Social Security benefit. All Social Security benefits are figured by the Social Security Administration’s national computer system. And that system has a remarkable record of accuracy. So, I’m sure you will be paid correctly.

Q: We have a slightly different marital

dynamic than most couples. My wife is the primar y wage earner. She has always made more money than me. Or to put that another way, I’ve always made a decent income, but my wife (a doctor) has made a great income.

As we are now approaching retirement age, is there anything special we need to know about Social Security?

A: Not really. Social Security is essentially gender neutral. In other words, the same benefits that are paid to wives are also paid to husbands.

And just as a wife is always paid her own benefit first, so too will you be paid your own Social Security retirement benefit. Only after that will they look to your wife’s record to see if you can get any extra spousal benefits. But because the spousal rate (for a wife or husband) is only somewhere between 30% and 50% (depending on your age when you file), it is doubtful you will get any husband’s benefits on your wife’s record. That is, while she is alive. If she dies before you do, and assuming you meet all the eligibility requirements, you will get widower’s benefits on her record, which can be as high as 100% if you are over your full retirement age.

Q: I am just turning 62. I was going to wait until age 67 to file for my Social Security, but I’m worried that Congress is going to pull the rug out from under me and cut benefits or start means-testing benefits. So, I’m thinking of filing now. What do you think?

A:

I think you should never make a Social Security decision based on politics. There is no question that somewhere down the road, Congress is going to deal with Social Security’s pending financial shortfall. But I will bet my next Social Security check that when they do, the reforms they come up with will have a long lead-in time. In other words, those changes won’t affect near-term retirees, but rather people who might be retiring

10 or 20 or even more years from now. For example, when they raised the retirement age from 65 to 67, they did so gradually over a span of about 40 years.

Q: I was married for 22 years to a wealthy man, but we divorced when I was 54 years old. Three years later, I married the man I’m still married to today. We are both 68 and we each get our own Social Security.

He gets about $2,400 and I get $1,850. My first husband just died. Is there any way I can get any of his Social Security?

A:

Because you remarried before the age of 60, you cannot get benefits from husband No. 1 as long as you are married to husband No. 2. And that last statement comes with a wink.

I don’t want to plant any thoughts in your head, but if you divorced your current husband, you could turn around and pick up widow’s benefits from your rich first husband. Then you could just keep living with your second husband. Or if it’s against your scruples to just live with a guy, you could turn around and remarry him -- and because you would be remarrying after age 60, you could continue to receive your widow’s benefits from your first husband.

But before you go through all those shenanigans, you should check with the SSA to find out what your widow’s benefit would be from the rich first husband. Assuming he didn’t employ some kind of payroll tax-dodging schemes, I’m assuming it would be in the $3,000 per month range.

Choose a trainer who does not teach by intimidation. Love, praise and affection are always required to educate and modify the behavior of any dog, especially one that is shy and fearful. When you work with your dog, always praise him as he learns the sit/stay command and all the rest. In fact, praise him throughout the educational process, even if he is only able to partially accomplish a command. He’s trying, and he will only get better if you reward him with loving praise.

Why does training help? First and foremost, it helps build his confidence. A confident dog is not ruled by fear -- or his bladder.

Ice Was a Luxury in Victorian Era Q: Enclosed is a photo of a silver tankard that has been in our family for somewhere around 100 years. On the bottom are the words, “Barbour Silver Co. -- Quadruple -- 50.”

What can you tell me about the histor y and value of my tankard?

You have a Victorian tilting ice pitcher with a matching goblet and stand. It was made around 1880 by Barbour Silver Co. in Connecticut.

“Quadruple” means your pitcher is silver plate rather than sterling silver.

Available ice was a luxury in the Victorian era. Silver plate ice pitchers were a symbol of wealth and status. They are lined with metal, glass or porcelain to help keep ice from melting quickly.

Few tilting ice pitchers have survived with their stands and goblets intact.

Similar pitchers that are in excellent condition and not in need of re-silvering are selling in the range of $400 to $700. *** Q: I found among my collection of old books a 1949 copy and first edition of “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller. It was published by Viking. It has the original dust jacket with a small tear. Unfortunately, it is not signed by the author.

By 1956, the Colonel had eight franchises, including one owned by Dave Thomas, who went on to establish the Wendy’s hamburger chain. Many times a chip around the green requires so little speed and minimal carry that you’re tempted to putt it instead. Yet, there’s too much thick grass in the way, a sprinkler head in the line, or other conditions that prompt you to create a soft chipping shot. Paul Runyan, a sharp short game artist back in the 40’s and 50’s, used a unique chipping style that fit just these types of situations.

STAN SMITH’S TENNIS CLASS Besides Runyan’s bizarre weakening of each hand position, he made a significant adjustment that any golfer can imitate. Paul (and his imitators) would tip the chipping club quite more vertical than normal so that the club was resting on its toe. Then, by bending the arms and standing much closer to the ball, he could create a putting stroke with a chipping club. The club has a better chance of moving in a straighter path, helping to create a cleaner hit and more accurate shot. By using a putting style stroke and hitting the ball more toward the toe end of the club, the ball came offADVERTISING the club softer than normal chips.
