Dear Sherri: Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tested conventional household disinfectants, hospital disinfectants and natural alternatives to measure each product’s ability to kill specific hazardous microbes. Their results show that white vinegar killed 90% of germs without regard to the temperature of the water.

Sounds pretty good until you realize that leaves a 10% chance for Salmonella, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus viruses, Influenza A2 virus and Herpes Simplex Type 1 to live on. A product like Lysol disinfectant, on the other hand, kills 99.9% of those germs.

My parents are in their mid-50s, and I think they spend way too much money. They have been in big financial trouble in the past and have gotten out of it, but I am starting to see the same type of spending that got them in trouble before.

They both work and make very good money. However, I know that they are not saving a lot of it. They are paying for student loans (theirs, not mine) and home improvement loans.

I also see them spending a lot of money on other things. These are not extravagant things like cars or trips, but like you said before, it appears to me that they are five- and ten-dollaring themselves to death.

I am worried about their future. My mother makes comments about how her children will hopefully help them out if they need it when they are elderly. At this rate, I know they will need help if they don’t start cutting back and saving.

Retirement age is coming quickly.

I have my own family, plus college educations to pay for. Of course, I love them and would do anything I could to help them in the future, but at the same time, I feel like they should start worrying now about their future, and not rely on their kids.

What can I say or do that can help them?

I don’t want to offend them, but I also want them to be able to have a happy retirement.

Watching Cancer Grow Owning an aggressive dog and doing nothing about it is like watching a cancer grow. That cancer turns out to be especially insidious when you add small children to the equation. You know on some level it’s not going to end well. And usually, it’s the dog that gets burned.

Couples who at first are married without kids often get a dog to dote on and hone their caretaking skills. They know they want to have kids someday, but someday seems so very far away.

Years go by, and the dog rarely if ever is exposed to children. He’s living large, the center of attention, and then one day his whole world flips upside down -- and he’s none too pleased.

Here’s another scenario, sent to me from a dog owner looking for help:

We are looking to find a non-kid house for our 6-year-old dog. He has bitten two children in the past three months, one of which was my 1-year-old. Some say he is jealous, but we feel he has issues isolated to children. He came to us at 3 months of age and growled at a little girl that same week.

He had two years of obedience training with a retired K-9 cop who trains police dogs. My heart is breaking for my children and for my husband and I, as parting with him was the furthest thing from our minds. However, the next time it may be a face or worse. Please help. He does quite well with adults, and we fear he is miserable here with the kids.

Revisiting Seniors-Only Grocery Shopping If you’ve been depending on grocery delivery or curbside pickup for the past two years, you might not know this: Many stores are continuing to have seniors-only hours.

I’d tried going to seniors-only hours once two years ago ... but only once. The whole virus/ pandemic was so new to us that we assumed that we must shop and stock up for all eventualities, leading to widespread shortages. The crowds that day were so massive that the line went across the front of the store. Store personnel were stationed at the door with counters in their hands, only allowing in a set number of shoppers.

When I saw a friend coming out, I asked: “What’s it like in there?” The answer: “It’s a nightmare. People are grabbing ten of everything. Don't even bother to go in there.” And I didn’t.

Recent queries among friends who still use seniors-only hours indicate that things are much, much better now in terms of crowds. We know that many items are chronically out of stock. We acknowledge that spreading COVID is still a possibility, and we wear masks. We don’t expect much in the way of variety in our diets unless we luck onto a full shelf of food.

Shipping Container Homes Yes, I am from a generation when technology virtually did not exist. I barely looked at my store-bought toys, making holidays and birthdays a nightmare for my parents. As a child, my preferred toys were empty boxes and cans that were discarded in my home. I would play with them for hours, curiously stacking them one on top of another. There is no doubt that there was a creative individual in the making and that I would end up studying architecture. Now, as an adult in the middle stages of life, I'm equally intrigued and entertained by the emerging trend of building with shipping containers. I fear I'm coming full circle and starting to play with my boxes again.

Shipping container homes and buildings have gained traction in recent years as people search for an alternative to traditional building methods and look for recyclable, durable products. Depending on where you live and the weather in your location, these shipping containers can be assembled in configurations that will give you protection from the sun, wind and rain.

There are some limitations to shipping container homes. Many who look into these homes are also searching for smaller homes, alternative sources of power and a smaller carbon footprint. These homes are sometimes built as beach or mountain homes, where, because of their remote locations, they are not subject to conventional building codes or adherence to sewer hookups or power sources. So, many are off-grid.

However, there are many shipping container homes that are being built in existing neighborhoods. Some are accessory structures, such as a “granny pad” or an artist’s studio, but others are built as the main home. Besides having to conform to all the building codes, there are

Shipping container homes offer numberous creative possibilities

I suggest there are more benefits when embracing the container fully. There are so many ways to develop the design of shipping container homes. Once you free yourself from preconceived notions, the possibilities are endless. Granted, if you are looking for homes that conform to traditional expectations or styles of architecture, these types of homes are probably not the ones to choose.

Glass, wood and almost any other material resistant to the outdoors can be used to clad the outside of the containers or create connectors between containers. Although there is beauty in the single shipping container home, interesting architecture is possible when using more than one container. All it takes is thinking outside the box.

Happy Birthday to Me I’m submitting this column to the newspapers on my birthday. I was born June 22, 1949. That makes me 73 years old. And I’m kind of surprised I made it this far. Why? Because I didn’t inherit the best of genes. My dad died at the age of 47. He had six brothers. And of those six uncles of mine, only one of them lived past the age of 60. So again, I was thrown into the shallow end of the longevity gene pool.

Of course, the reason I’m still here has as much to do with lifestyle choices as it does with genes. My dad smoked heavily all his life, and he drank more than a little. I never once saw my dad take a hike or a bike ride or do any kind of physical activity -- other than his job. (He was a janitor at a church and school complex.) On the other hand, I’ve never had a cigarette, I drink just an occasional glass of wine, and my wife and I try to take a bike ride every day.

So anyway, here I am still kicking at 73.

And before I end this column, I’ll tie this into something to do with Social Security. But it being birthday number 73, I’m in a bit of a nostalgic mood, and I want to share a couple stories with you.

I mentioned that I never saw my dad (and my mom, too, for that matter) do any kind of physical activity, except for their jobs -- and of course, chores around the house. But that’s not to say they never did anything. My dad served in World War II in the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic on various islands in the Pacific, getting B-24s and B-25s ready for their bombing runs. And my mom was the number one player on her high school tennis team. So, they had active lives before jobs and kids and bills and mortgages got in the way.

Speaking of jobs. I mentioned my dad was a janitor, and some people might say he was “just” a janitor. But I remember as a kid thinking he was about the most important person in the world.

He was the custodian at the Catholic church and school that we attended in Sheboygan, Wisconsin -- Saints Cyril and Methodius. After the parish priest and the nuns, he was just about the most respected and admired and crucial member of the

church/school community. And as his oldest son, and helpmate, I wasn’t far behind.

So, because of my dad’s status, I was a “BBOC” (big boy on campus) within our elementary school. And my BBOC status had a lot to do with keys! Yes, keys! Let me explain. My dad had a keyholder gadget attached to his belt. I bet there were 50 keys attached to that key holder that would get him into just about any room in the whole complex.

And as the No. 1 son and assistant custodian, I had a duplicate set of keys. And that really impressed my 1st through 8th grade classmates. I mean, if you wanted to get into the locked teacher’s lounge after hours to see what treasures were hidden there, you could come see me. If you wanted to sneak into the usher’s office in the church to search for lost collection-basket quarters on the floor, I could get you in. And if you were a nasty little boy and wanted to see what mysteries were behind the doors of the girls’ bathroom, I had a key. Gosh, I relished those days as the janitor’s son and the kid with the keys!

Adding to our status was the fact that we lived on the grounds of the church/school complex. The church had built a new convent for the nuns, and they let my dad and his family move into the old convent. How many kids grew up in a house that had a painted relief of the last supper etched into one of the walls of the dining room? And how many kids had a rec room that was a former chapel, complete with an altar that we used as a play table?

I think I shared a story in a past column about the new convent they built for our school and parish nuns. It came complete with a swimming pool, which was something I could never figure out as a kid. I mean, why in the world did nuns need a swimming pool? They certainly could never use it.

Gosh, if they jumped in, they would get those big, black head-to-toe habits all wet, wouldn’t they?

Well, one day, my brother and I were determined to solve this mystery. We were helping my dad by cutting the grass around the nun’s con-

vent. There was a big, high fence surrounding the backyard swimming pool. But I found a tiny hole in one of the wooden slats of the fence. We peered through. And, my goodness, there were Sister Rose and Sister Irma sitting at the pool, in swimsuits! To be sure, they were extremely modest (and black) swimsuits. But still, they were swimsuits! And these were our 2nd and 5th grade teacher nuns wearing not much at all! OMG! They had hair! They had legs! And most shocking of all -- they had breasts!

We couldn’t believe our eyes. These heavenly creatures that we had grown up believing were only one level below angels turned out to be just women! My brother and I couldn’t wait to share this news with our classmates. I’m surprised we didn’t start a rebellion of disillusioned little Catholic boys and girls!

One more quick story. Earlier, I mentioned I had the key to the girls’ bathroom. It actually was the key to a janitor’s closet that was within the bathroom. Well, one day after school, I was helping my dad by cleaning the bathroom. While doing so, I heard the unmistakable sound of a nun approaching. (They wore rosary beads around their waist that made a distinctive jingle as they walked.) What I should have done is say, “Excuse me sister, I was cleaning in here. Let me leave and give you some privacy.”

But instead, I panicked. I slipped into the janitor’s closet and closed the door. I was just barely breathing! I heard the nun enter one of the stalls and proceed to do what people do in there.

And once again, little 10-year-old me was shocked!

I just didn’t think that angels/nuns did those kinds of things! The nun finished her “business” and left.

But I don’t think I came out of that closet for an hour afterward. I was so traumatized! Combine that incident with my swimming pool discovery, and I’m surprised I didn’t try to report my findings to the Pope!

OK. Back to me and Social Security. I just turned 73. And my wife is 78. (I still can’t believe I married an older woman 48 years ago!) Anyway, we’ve now reached the turnaround point in our Social Security lives. I mentioned before that we both bucked tradition and the advice of financial planners and took our Social Security benefits at age 62.

So, for many years, we’ve been living on the gravy train of early benefits. But now we’ve reached the times where we might have been ahead to wait until a later age to start our benefits. In other words, we’re now starting to be on the losing end of the Social Security gamble (of when to start your benefits). But you know what? We don’t care. We’ve had fun for the past decade or more spending our reduced Social Security benefits. And we’ll continue to have fun spending those benefits for whatever time we have left on this earth -- and before I face eternal damnation for sneaking a peek at those nuns in swimsuits!

Safer Cycling If you’re interested in cycling, but worry about falling or injuring yourself, e-trikes are a great choice because of the three-wheeled stability they provide. With a trike you can ride as slow as you want without ever losing your balance, which is very reassuring for most older riders.

E-trikes also come with a small electric powered motor to enhance the riding experience, so when you mount up and apply the throttle the motor will give you a boost when pedaling, or it will do all the work for you if you're just along for the ride. Children’s Dishes are an Amazing Legacy Q: This is a photo of a set of child’s dishes that were my mother’s. She was born in 1928, and the set was given to her when she was a child. The bowl’s nest and the lid also can be used as a trivet, and the cookie jar has a woven handle. They are all marked “Japan” and in excellent condition.

She also had a set of lusterware doll dishes that she played with. I found a matching set of her lusterware dishes in a museum, but I haven’t found anything similar to these.

If you know of any background or histor y and could give me an idea of the value of this set, it would be greatly appreciated.

A: Your set of children’s dishes is unusual

and very collectible. The cookie jar is most often referred to as a biscuit barrel. Without a manufacturer’s mark on the dishes, it can be impossible to identify the name of the factory where they were made. Knowing your mother played with these dishes, it is amazing they are in such good condition.

The value of your set would probably be $100 to $150.

Unfortunately this is not an article about the greatest trio of golfers ever to have played – Palmer, Nicklaus, and Player. It’s about the three tremendously important fingers of the left hand that influence much of the success of any golf shot. The middle finger down to the pinky establish the foundation of grip pressure and control of the hands with the full swing and especially the short game.

Learn to be aware of the control and pressure your bottom three fingers exert by holding the club without the other fingers. Yes, even without the left thumb and forefinger. Practice hinging the club up and down with just the left arm and wrist. You will typically exert more of a squeezing pressure to maintain a solid hold of the club with those fingers.

That’s where the majority of pressure should be felt in your normal grip, yet on a slightly lighter scale.
