Q: I was so sad to hear about the passing of actor Ray Liotta. I’m pretty certain I saw him on a daytime soap opera before he starred in classic movies like “Goodfellas.”

Which soap character did he play? -- R.B.

Kilmer does appear briefly in the new “Top Gun” sequel, reprising his iconic character of “Iceman,” and plans to play Mark Twain in a feature film, but that will likely depend on how his voice recovers, if at all.

Described as a global sci-fi thriller, it suffered many delays due to the pandemic, and reportedly, Robbins’ role was bumped down to a recurring one before his exit. He’s quickly bounced back with another series, “Wool,” created by Graham Yost (“Justified”) for Apple TV+.

Sammo: “My girlfriend and I recently adopted Sammo, her parents’ 9-year-old Shar-Pei. He had become too much for them to handle and her father was ready to put Sammo down after he bit his wife -twice. We decided to adopt him since we did not see signs of aggression toward people during our time with him.

“At a recent checkup, Sammo snapped at the vet. Sammo has already snapped at me twice. Last night, we were on the back porch and he was enjoying a treat. It was getting dark and my girlfriend got up to get Sammo some water. He growled and charged at her. He has not had any real training outside of housebreaking and learning how to sit.

What should we do?”

The writing on the wall: Sammo had bitten twice before they adopted him, and they knew this.

He’s an aggressive dog that requires professional training and firm boundaries. They will have to make concessions to keep Sammo safely in their lives and in their house.

Rex: “Our 2-year-old Australian shepherd, Rex, has shown signs of aggression toward strangers and my daughter’s friends -- never toward family members. He won’t let anyone touch my daughter.

If someone is on our yard, he will snarl and try to bite. Some mothers won’t let their girls come over anymore because Rex bit them. He has even broken skin. We tried to socialize him, but it didn’t get any better, so we want to do something about it.”

Scams against seniors get worse by the year, and the pandemic hasn’t helped. Many of the current scams are COVID-related: A scammer will offer to send you a box of at-home test kits -- for a fee. A fake contact tracer will call and claim to need to know your Social Security number for identity purposes. Some will say that your latest doctor bill won’t be paid unless you give them your Medicare number. Others will claim to need your banking information so they can do a direct deposit of the stimulus money the government is sending you.

Some are new for this year: Supposed Amazon employees will call or send email to warn you about a large purchase. Fake rental-assistance

Is an Open Kitchen Really for You? Everyone says they love a large, open kitchen they can entertain in. But is that really a practical solution? How much entertaining do you do? Or do you just like the thought of entertaining? Reality and perception of the way we live are often at odds with each other and can guide us into making mistakes that are costly and unpractical.

Most new home developments, from single-family homes to townhouses to condominiums, are designed under the assumption that everyone wants a large, open kitchen. You walk into any model home and sleek kitchens and stainless-steel appliances are there to make you salivate. But ask anyone who actually does the cooking or housekeeping and their answers are likely to shock you.

Most chefs, even the celebrity kind in fancy restaurants, will tell you they prefer a small -- but well-organized -- kitchen. While most open kitchens are large to wow the dining audience, most behind-the-scenes kitchens are no larger than the size of two walk-in closets. Why, you may ask? Well, when you are in the kitchen and on your feet for 8 to 12 hours, you prefer your equipment, storage and wash-up areas to be in close proximity, just a few feet apart. Efficiency -- and lessened physical fatigue -- are the main reasons for preferring a small kitchen.

So if these are the insider secrets from chefs who spend all day and night in their kitchens, why do so many of us want a large kitchen? The answer is simple: It is for show, just like the ones seen in large upscale restaurants. I always like to please my clients, and if they ask for an open kitchen, they usually get an open kitchen, but I try to make them aware of the pluses and minuses of an open kitchen versus a practical one.

Closed kitchens are great for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, they allow the cook to really pay attention to what they are doing without any social distractions. Closed kitchens can be set apart by a door, reducing the food odors greeting the guests and adhering to the expensive fabric you chose for your furniture. Earnings After Retirement May or May Not Increase Your Social Security Check Q: I am 73 and still working part time.

I took my Social Security at age 66. I have never seen an increase in my Social Security check, even though I am still paying into the system. What’s up?

A:

Simply stated, your Social Security retirement benefit is based on your average monthly income, indexed for inflation, using a 35-year base of earnings. So, when you initially filed for benefits, the Social Security Administration looked at your entire earnings history. Then they adjusted each year of earnings for inflation. The inflation adjustment factor depends on your year of birth and varies from one year to the next.

Here is just one example. I’m guessing you were born in 1949. And let’s say that you made $7,000 in 1970. When figuring your Social Security benefit, the SSA multiplied that $7,000 by an inflation adjustment factor of 6.58. In other words, instead of $7,000, they actually used $46,060 as your 1970 earnings when figuring your Social Security benefit. (There are different inflation factors for each year of earnings.)

How to Choose a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) Policy DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: I’m planning to enroll in original Medicare in a few months and several friends have advised me to also have additional coverage with a supplemental policy. Is this worth the extra cost I would have to pay? I'm hoping you can offer some advice or tips to help me decide. -- Almost 65 Dear Almost: If you’re enrolling in original Medicare, it's a smart idea to sign up for a supplemental policy (also known as Medigap insurance) as a backup. It will help pay for things that aren’t covered by Medicare, like copayments, coinsurance and the Part A deductible.

Here are some tips to help you choose an appropriate plan.

Medigap Plans In all but three states (Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin), Medigap plans, which are sold by private health insurers, are available to new enrollees in eight different standardized plans. These plans are labeled with the letters A, B, D, G, K, L, M and N, with two more, C and F, that are only available to those eligible for Medicare before 2020.

Plan G is the most popular policy among new enrollees because it covers the most comprehensive range of benefits. Monthly premiums for Plan G typically range between $100 and $300, depending on your age and the state you reside in. If that’s more than you’re willing to pay, there are also high-deductible plans that have lower premiums but impose higher out-of-pocket costs.

Medigap policies are usually sold as either: “communityrated” where everyone in an area is charged the same premium regardless of age; “issue-age-rated” that is based on your age when you buy the policy, but will only increase due to inflation, not age; and “attained-age-rated,” that starts premiums low but increases as you age. Communityrate and issue-age-rated policies are the best options because they will save you money in the long run.

You can buy the plan directly from an insurance company, or you can work with a reputable insurance broker.

Drug Coverage You also need to know that Medigap policies do not cover prescription drugs, so if you don’t have drug coverage, you’ll need to buy a separate Medicare Part D drug plan too. See Medicare.gov/plan-compare to compare plans.

Also note that Medigap plans do not cover vision, dental care, hearing aids or long-term care.

hedgehog washerwoman named Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. She was created by Beatrix Potter in the late 1900s.

Potter was an English author, illustrator and conservationist who wrote children’s books.

The “Tale of Peter Rabbit” is one of her most wellknown books. Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was based on Potter’s pet hedgehog.

Schmid and Co. was located in New York and was a distributor of decorative items. Frederick Warne and Co. was the original publisher of the book “The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle” in 1905. Potter’s charming books are still being published.

Open’s Not Right Opening the clubface of a sand wedge or lob wedge can be a visually daunting challenge to many golfers when hitting pitch shots. The most common misunderstanding is that open equals right when it comes to shot direction. The loft of the club plays an important role in solving this short game puzzle.

With a three iron (21-24 degrees of loft), the openness of the face will aim the leading edge to the right as well as the face itself. Because the loft is small the face angle and leading edge are similarly aligned. But when lob wedge (60 degrees of loft) is opened, the leading edge does aim right, but the face angle just points more skyward (or more lofted). Yes, there is a slight misalignment to the right, but the clubface is now a 70-80 degree tool more than anything. Trust that open equals high not right!
