• In designing a book jacket for this occasion, Gelett Burgess wanted to mock these conventions, so he lifted the image of a gorgeous beauty from a toothpaste ad and put it on his book jacket, dubbing her with the fictitious name Belinda.

She was quoted on the book jacket with gushy, exaggerated statements about the book and its author.

• At the banquet, 500 copies of this book with the spoof book jacket were distributed. Afterwards, Belinda’s last name entered our language meaning a short written piece which generally praises or promotes something. Her full name?

• In the Roman Empire, Italian bakers invented a new product. First they made a loaf of dough without using oils or butter and baked it in the oven. Once done, they cut it into individual slices and baked it again. This removed all moisture, making them crisp and dry, and giving them an extraordinarily long life. They were a valuable supply of nourishment used during wars, long journeys, and sea voyages.

• After the fall of the Roman Empire, these baked items popped up in Tuscany, Italy, thanks to a local baker who served them with wine. Their popularity spread, and even Columbus packed these sweet and crispy staples on his long ocean voyages. In Italy they are eaten with wine; in England with tea; and in America with coffee.

The name for this item comes from the Latin words “bis” meaning twice, and “coctum” meaning baked. You know it as biscotti, from which we also get the word “biscuit.”

• If you think we’ve always used ordinary envelopes, think again! This seeming no-brainer didn’t actually come along until 1839. Prior to that, folks simply folded their letters both ways and sealed them with wax.

• Housewives everywhere were thrilled to see the introduction of the electric washing machine, an invention by Alva Josiah Fisher of the Hurley Machine Company in 1906. For those who could afford one, it was a welcomed improvement over the manual method of washboard scrubbing.

• The same gentleman who revolutionized the construction industry with his invention of plywood also happens to be the inventor of dynamite. Yet he is most famous for the coveted awards that are presented every year in his name, Alfred Nobel.

• Although many would claim the honor of inventing the world’s first electronic computer, a 1973 American court decision officially awarded the achievement to Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff, a professor of physics at Iowa State University. Dr. Atanasoff devised his digital computer with a memory drum in 1942 but was not acclaimed as the “father of American computing” until after years of patent litigation.

• Listerine antiseptic was not named after its inventor, Dr. Joseph Lawrence, but rather after Dr. Joseph Lister in 1879. When Lawrence originated the formula in his St. Louis laboratory, he dubbed it “Listerine” in honor of the British surgeon, Lister, who led the way in establishing sanitary operation room procedures. Lawrence intended the chemical to be used in the medical profession for antibacterial cleansing. Listerine was not offered to the public for another 36 years.

• James McNeill Whistler is well known for the painting of his mother entitled “arrangement in Gray and Black No. 1,” more commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” James Whistler’s father was also famous in his own right for his innovative addition to railroad safety. • German immigrant Levi Strauss moved to California in 1850 to sell dry goods during the gold rush. He designed his heavy denim workpants with durable riveted pockets for the miners. He charged $13.50 a pair, a high price at the time, but the miners knew the rugged trousers would last them for years.

• American chemist Lyle Goodhue patented the aerosol container in 1941. The first substance sold in this new dispenser was an insecticide product.

• Who knew Statesman Thomas Jefferson was also an inventor? Jefferson is credited with inventing a macaroni machine, a revolving chair with a leg rest and writing arm, and new types of iron plows created especially for hillside plowing.

He also designed beds for his home that were built into alcoves on webs of rope hung from hooks, as well as automatic doors for his parlor.

• It was the greatest thing since sliced bread--a machine that not only sliced the bread but wrapped it as well! This innovative device was the 1930 brainstorm of Otto Rohwodder.

• Chester Carlson spent a good part of his life perfecting the copy machine, receiving a patent in 1937. However, the world didn’t share his vision of one-touch copying, and 20 companies rejected his presentation before it was finally marketed for the first time in 1959 under the name “Xerox 914.”

Most dog owners know to keep the pooch away from chocolate. But what other doggy dangers lurk in and outside of the house?

Some hazards are obvious: household cleaners, pesticides, rodent poisons, bug sprays, insect repellants, paint, paint thinners and art supplies, cosmetics, pool chemicals, drain clearers, fertilizers and detergents, as well as electrical sockets, cords and wires.

Others tend to fly under the radar.

Batteries, for example, might not raise a red flag. But batteries are bite-sized! Swallowing one whole may or may not be a major problem. But chewing a battery to the extent that its corrosive fluid leaks out could be a painful event that leads to serious health concerns for the dog. In this the era of technology, a household without batteries is unimaginable. So the best solution to this problem is prevention: the safe and secure storage of all batteries and any chewable objects they power.

The fridge is a glowing Pandora’s box of items both delectable and dangerous for your dog.

Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, is high on the list of foods that are off-limits to your dog. Others are:

-- Raisins and Grapes: Even in small numbers, raisins and grapes are toxic and can induce kidney failure in dogs.

-- Garlic and Onions: Depending on the dose, the ingestion of onions and garlic can create a life-threatening form of hemolytic anemia in dogs.

-- Mushrooms: Sure, some mushrooms are harmless. But many species of mushrooms are harmful to dogs and can cause toxic shock and death. Unless you are a professional mycologist, don’t take any chances. Keep your dog away from all mushrooms. This includes “backyard” varieties, which should be plucked.

-- Macadamia Nuts: If your dog consumes macadamia nuts, he might luck out with some minor gastrointestinal upset. But these nuts can also cause lethargy, muscle tremors and stiffness, and bladder stones.

-- Avocado: At the center of an avocado sits a large pit that looks suspiciously similar to a ball.

But even if your pooch avoids choking on the pit, avocados contain persin, which can be toxic to animals. Persin toxicity can damage the tissue of the heart and lungs and can cause pancreatitis.

-- Caffeine and Alcohol: While some may find it amusing to see Fido tanked on booze or bouncing off the walls on a caffeine buzz, neither is good for his health.

-- Xylitol: Ingestion of this sugar substitute (found in certain kinds of chewing gum, candy, chewable vitamins and baked goods) can lead to permanent brain damage, liver failure and even death in dogs.

In the garage and around street curbs, leaking anti-freeze is a serious hazard. Anti-freeze tastes sweet, so it’s tempting. But lapping at antifreeze can induce kidney failure and lead to death -- often very quickly.

What about plants? According to the ASPCA, “Common houseplants were the subject of over 14,000 calls to APCC (Animal Poison Control Center) in 2020.” The plants the ASPCA suggests dog owners beware of are: azalea, rhododendron, sago palm, lilies, kalanchoe and schefflera. Add holly, poinsettia and mistletoe to that list when the holiday season rolls around.

As always, keep human medications safely stored in medicine cabinets. And find a safe, out-ofreach place for the storage of veterinary medication, as well.

If you know or even suspect your dog has ingested or otherwise been exposed to anything on this list -- or anything you are not 100 percent sure is safe -- contact your veterinarian or the 24-hour Animal Poison Control Center hotline (888-4264435) immediately. Don’t wait. When combating toxicity, early detection and proper treatment yield the best outcome.

Spousal Benefits: What You Can and Cannot Do

Before I even start, I’m going to address the gender issue. This column is about benefits available to spouses. However, I don’t want to spend the whole column trying to be gender-neutral and using awkward combined pronouns like “he/she” or “him/her,” or jumbled phrases like “benefits for husbands and/or wives.” Because statistics show that 90% of the people who get spousal benefits are women, I’m going to keep things simple and address this column to women. Or more specifically, to wives who are wondering what benefits they might be due on a husband’s Social Security record.

And two more caveats before I go on. In this column, I will be talking about benefits for wives -- not widows. Different rules apply to widows benefits. They have been explained in past columns and will be explained in future columns. But today I will be addressing women whose husbands are still alive and kicking.

And speaking of husbands, that’s the other caveat. If you are a husband who happens to fall into that 10% cohort of men who get a smaller Social Security retirement benefit than their wives, then you possibly could be due husbands benefits on your wife’s Social Security record. So, as you read this column, simply reverse the gender pronouns.

OK, let’s start out with this basic tenet: Assuming you are a woman who has worked and earned your own Social Security benefit, you will ALWAYS be paid that benefit first. In other words, you must always file for your own Social Security retirement benefits before you can even consider filing for benefits as a wife on your husband’s Social Security account.

Almost every single day, I get emails from women asking me this: “Can I file for benefits on my husband’s record now and then later switch to higher benefits on my own record?” The answer is NO! Remember that basic rule I just told you about.

You must always file for your own benefits first.

Well, there is one little exception. It has to do with the “restricted application” loophole discussed about 100 times in past columns. If you turned 66 before Jan. 2, 2020, and haven’t yet filed for any Social Security benefits, you can file for wives benefits on your husband’s record and then, at a later age, switch to higher benefits on your own retirement benefit.

But don’t let that little exception confuse you. Again, it only applies to that very tiny group of readers who were 66 before Jan. 2, 2020, and haven’t signed up for Social Security yet. All of the rest of you must live by that basic tenet I explained above.

I can’t repeat it often enough: You will ALWAYS file for your own Social Security benefits first.

Let’s give an example. Becky is turning 62 and wants to file for Social Security. Her full retirement benefit is $800 per month, meaning her age62 rate will be $600. She has a husband, Tom, who is 68. He started his benefits when he was 62. He is getting $1,800 per month. Tom’s full retirement benefit rate is $2,400. So, what is Becky due from Social Security?

Again, we start out with that basic rule. She must be paid her own benefit first. So, she will start out getting $600 in reduced retirement benefits.

Then they will look to Tom’s record to see what ex- record now and later file for spousal benefits on his tra spousal benefits she might be due. Becky heard record? Yes, you can. In fact, that is a very common that a wife gets half of her husband’s Social Secu- scenario. Let’s follow another example.

Ann is just turning 62 and plans to file for rity. But that is only true IF she waits until her full retirement age to file. Because she is signing up for benefits now. Dear Living: Planning your funerals in advance is definitely a wise move. Not only does it give you and your wife time to make thoughtful decisions on the type of service you want, it also allows you to shop around to find a suitable funeral provider, and it will spare your family members the burden of making these decisions at an emotional time in their lives.

But preplanning a funeral doesn’t mean you have to prepay too. In fact, the Funeral Consumer Alliance, a national nonprofit funeral consumer protection organization, doesn’t recommend it unless you need to spend down your financial resources so you can qualify for Medicaid. Here’s what you should know.

● If there is an insurance policy involved, is there a waiting period before it takes effect?

How long?

● Are the prices locked in or will an additional payment be required at the time of death?

● Are you protected if the funeral home goes out of business or if it’s bought out by another company?

● What happens if you move? Can the plan be transferred to another funeral home in a different state?

● If there's money left over after your funeral, will your heirs get it, or does the home keep it?

If you decide to prepay, be sure to get all the details of the agreement in writing and give copies to your family so they know what’s expected. If they aren't aware that these plans are already in place, your wishes will very likely not be carried out.
