BLACK CATS In celebration of National Black Cat Day on October 27, Tidbits presents the details on these often-misunderstood felines. • Black is the most common of all for cats, and that color is due to the presence of eumelanin, a dark polymer pigment responsible for producing black. • Although many cat breeds, including Persian, Sphynx, Selkirk Rex, and Bobtail, can have black fur, only one breed, the Bombay, is the only true breed that is always black. The Bombay is a hybrid of the Sable Burmese and American Shorthair breeds, created in the 1950s. • An American breeder named Nikki Horner began experimenting in 1953 to produce the breed, and after 12 years finally achieved what she was looking for. She had managed to produce a cat that resembled an Indian black leopard or panther, giving it the name Bombay. Bombay cats have earned the nickname “parlor panthers” because of their graceful, panther-like movements and shiny, satiny coat. In order to be a true Bombay, the eyes must be either gold colored or the color of bright copper. • The goal of National Black Cat Day is to dispel the numerous myths about their supposed connection to bad luck. Why do so many wary people associate these felines with such negative superstitions? Although there are many folk tales and legends about black cats passed along for centuries, it hasn’t always been that way. • In fact, the ancient Egyptians held all cats in the highest regard, even ranking them at the level of nobility. Killing a cat was punishable by death. They even had a cat goddess, Bastet, the symbol of fertility and protection.

• It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that black cats began getting a bad reputation as superstitions about them started to spread. People began associating the cats’ black color with darkness, evil and sinister forces. The cat population decreased as killing them became commonplace.
17th-century boy who was turned into a black cat by the sisters in the 1993 film “Hocus Pocus.”
• The cat-killing practice unknowingly contributed to the spread of the bubonic plague, which was later found to be carried by mice. With the number of natural mouse predators now diminishing, the plague only spread more vigorously, contributing further to the cat superstitions.
• Forty-third U.S. President George W. Bush owned India, a favored black cat who lived to be 18. In 1988, a wealthy British antiques dealer died and left his black feline named Blackie $12.5 million (nearly $35.6 million today). Blackie was the last surviving cat of a string of 15 felines that had lived in luxury in the millionaire's plush mansion. ADVERTISING PROOF Monday, 10/19/26 Final Changes DUE: 5:00 p.m..

Fido Krueger in the Pumpkin Patch
3. The Weekly “Brain Breaker”
Holidays & Observances This Week 10/25 International Artists Day
At least Freddy Krueger was limited to the dream life of a few select friends and neighbors on Elm Street. Fido Krueger, on the other hand, haunts the waking life of innocents in the market for that perfect Halloween pumpkin. From a reader: “I have a pumpkin patch, and my dog attacks people and their pets while they’re browsing. What can I do?” In today’s turbulent economic times, setting Fido Krueger free to terrorize the local pumpkin patch might not be the best way to boost sales. The important question here is: Am I in the business of selling pumpkins or getting sued? A brief conversation with the poser of that question opened the door to a litany of excuses: “I was hoping he would stop.” “He doesn’t do it all the time.” “I love him so much.” “He’s really well-behaved except for this.” Bottom line: This is your livelihood. Fido K. can and should stay home until he’s well-behaved in a way that doesn’t involve drawing blood. Leave that to the vampires. In fact, this being the week leading up to Halloween, it’s time to revisit reasons to leave even those dogs with the very best manners at home, inside, safe, sound and secure. First off, the fringe criminal minds for whom Halloween is both a reason and an excuse to steal, torture, poison or even kill dogs and cats left vulnerable in yards make it mandatory that pets be kept inside on fright night. Personally, I believe pets should always be kept inside at night. They are safer that way, and you are safer for having them there. Even inside, though, pets should not have the freedom to roam the house that they normally might. Dinging doorbells, flickering lights, opening and closing doors, and strange sounds and sights are enough to agitate the calmest of animals. A dog that normally wouldn’t dream of darting out the front door might get that urge on a night when

A Holiday Gift to Yourself The best gift we can give ourselves during the coming holiday season is not becoming the victim of a scam. This year it’s going to be tough to manage that. Thieves are constantly fine-tuning their skills and they're making themselves seem more believable than ever.. Your job is to know what form scams against you can take and to sharpen your intuition when things don’t seem right. The fact to keep top of mind at all times is that scammers are after your money and you need to keep yourself aware of that fact. It's vital that you stay alert to keep their thieving hands out of your precious savings accounts. If your senior center holds a seminar on avoiding scams, by all means go. Take notes. If they don’t have such seminars or classes, ask for one to be held. You won’t be the only one to benefit from it. If you buy online, don’t click any links (including from search engines) to get to any
If you get email that says your package has been delayed, don’t click any icon link in the email. If you get a call demanding that you pay extra shipping fees, hang up and call the seller on a number you know to be correct. Gift card scams are big now, and most requests you will get to pay for something with a gift card will be a scam. If you get a phone call where you’re told you owe a bill (or that your account is in jeopardy for some reason), don’t let yourself be pressured into acting quickly. Hang up and call back on a number you know is correct. Ask them to verify whether they’ve tried to reach you. In fact, feel free to be suspicious of any phone call or email you weren’t expecting if you’re asked to give any information or money. Whether it’s charity requests, tech support, your bank, be suspicious. Stay alert, especially during this holiday season! * * * Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Cody’s Corner (from page 9) his routine is so dramatically altered. Here are a few more cautionary measures that will help keep your pets safe this Halloween: -- Keep pets indoors. -- Walk dogs early in the evening, before trick-or-treaters hit the streets. Wings, masks, capes, sabers, costumes of any kind can be frightening and threatening to your pooch. And if you walk your dog after the festivities, watch out for candy and wrappers he may swallow. -- When inside, keep him comfortable and in a room away from the front door. -- If you want him to play sidekick as you greet trick-or-treaters, keep him on a leash. Strangers, noise and costumes are stressors that can set off even a normally placid family pet. A child could get bit, or your dog could bolt outside and get hit by a car. -- Keep candy, chocolate, candy wrappers, candles and jack-o-lanterns up high and out of reach. They are all dangerous -- potentially fatal -for dogs. -- Make sure your pet’s ID tag is current and includes your phone number. -- Resist the urge to costume him. If you absolutely must, nothing with a mask. He should be able to breathe, hear, see and drink water with ease at all times. -- And one more time for emphasis: Keep ‘em inside. All night long. All of ‘em -- dogs, cats, whatever creatures that share your household. Dining Rooms Dining rooms are stellar rooms for drama. Just think of the exquisite scenes set in “Downton Abbey’s” dining rooms. For foodies and aficionados of interior design, dining rooms are often the most important room of the house. Whether you love intimate dinners or enjoy large dinner parties, there are certain considerations. Do you entertain often, or do you have a hectic schedule and mostly serve pre-prepared foods? Whatever your scenario, the decor of your dining room is as important as the food that is served there. Many older formal homes have separate dining rooms, while others are part of a great room or just a dining area. Whatever your home layout or decorating style, you have choices. The shape and size of the dining table says a lot about the homeowners’ lifestyle and entertaining preferences. Choosing wisely will enhance the diners’ experience. Generally, rectangular tables are better for a large number of people. Oval or oblong tables are ideal for medium-sized groups of five or six. Square or round tables work best for those who prefer intimate dining. Most everyone loves a round table. However, remember that when a round table increases in size, it gets wider, thus making it difficult for guests to talk to and hear one another across the table. A round table also needs to be larger than a rectangular table to seat the same number of people.

YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Social Security and Politics Every couple of years, whenever midterm or presidential elections come around, I like to remind my readers of a few things. And many times, it’s in response to emails I get similar to this one: “I’m afraid that this upcoming election will lead to dramatic changes to Social Security. So even though I didn’t want to file for Social Security for a few more years, I’m going to do it now so that I am grandfathered into the current system and no politician will pull the rug out from under me!” And then they ask me if I think that’s a good idea. And here is my answer. NEVER make a decision about when to start your Social Security benefits based on politics. Instead, make that decision based on your financial situation, your anticipated longevity, your marital status, and other personal considerations discussed often in this column. Why not politics? Well, consider this. For 50 years now, people have been making the same point to me. In other words, as far back as the 1970s and 1980s, people were telling me: “I’m afraid soand-so (fill in your political villain) will be elected and he will ruin Social Security as we know it.” And of course, that never happened. Social Security keeps chugging along no matter who is sitting in the Oval Office or in Congress. To be sure, Social Security has been reformed over the years, and changes have been made to the laws affecting a person’s eligibility for benefits. But if those changes were major, they were almost always phased in over a long time. Case in point. In 1983, Congress raised the retirement age from 65 to 67. But they did not do so overnight. They phased in the age increase over a period of more than four decades. In fact, it won’t be until 2027 that people born in 1960 will finally reach their full retirement age of 67. If somewhere in the near future Congress raises the retirement age again (a likely prospect), it won’t be people currently in their 50s and 60s who will be affected by the change. Rather, it will be our children, and more likely our grandchildren, who will have to wait until a greater age before they can retire with full Social Security benefits. And speaking of politics and Social Security, many readers have complained to me that even though everyone knows that for years now, with 10,000 baby boomers retiring every single day, the Social Security system has been heading towards a financial cliff. Yet nobody seems to be doing anything about it. Well, in my opinion, there is plenty of blame to go around. Some liberals and Democrats deserve their share of the blame because so often they tend to put their heads in the sand and say, “What Social Security problem?” They run on a platform that essentially says, “I won’t let those nasty Republicans mess around with your Social Security benefits!” And then on the other hand, some conservatives and Republicans deserve their share of the blame because they frequently propose outlandish and totally unworkable solutions to the problem such as “privatizing” the system. But here is one of the main points I wanted to make in today’s column. You may remember

How do we do that? Well, in my book, “SoCaesar was not chosen by the gods to rule Rome, but rather by the actions of citizens. Cassius says: cial Security -- Simple and Smart,” there is a chapter “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in that explains Social Security financing and offers very workable and realistic proposals for reform. ourselves.” If I were the great Bard today and I was You can get the book at Amazon or other booksellwriting a play about the lack of any progress on ers. And obviously, I’m not the only guy with the Social Security reform front, I would say, “The fault, dear reader, is not in our politicians, but in ideas to fix Social Security. There are hundreds of them out there. For example, a recent survey ourselves.” In my humble opinion, the public deserves conducted by the Program for Public Consultation their share of the blame because they say they affiliated with the University of Maryland found want reform but they tend to vote otherwise. ANSWER: Immediately after surgery, liver enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase and AST (aspartate aminotransferase) transiently increase. However, when a person is 10 or more years out from surgery, there’s still an increased risk of an elevated alkaline phosphatase level (but not AST or bilirubin). Your alkaline phosphatase level is mildly elevated, and your AST is normal. Your bilirubin level, however, is also mildly elevated. I can’t tell you

Possible causes But hormones and aging aren’t the only explanations. Hair loss can also follow a major illness, surgery, COVID infection, or a period of significant stress. In these cases, shedding often begins a few months later and may improve on its own. Other possible causes include thyroid disorders, iron deficiency, poor nutrition, autoimmune conditions, and scalp disorders. Medications can also play a role. Drugs such as blood thinners, antidepressants, beta blockers, cholesterol medications, thyroid treatments, arthritis drugs, and some hormone therapies have all been linked to hair loss in some people. If you suspect a medication may be involved, don’t stop it on your own – ask your doctor about alternatives. Get checked Because there are so many possible causes, the first step is getting a proper evaluation. See your doctor or a dermatologist if you notice sudden shedding, rapid thinning, bald patches, or scalp itching or pain. They may review your medications, examine your scalp, and order simple blood tests to check for problems such as thyroid imbalance or iron deficiency.

Lamp With Lighted Base Most Desirable Q: The lamp seen in this photo was
purchased by my grandmother at an estate sale. It has two light bulbs in the shade, and the base lights up as well. I cannot find any marks to identify the maker. Other than a few cracks in the metal on the shade, it is in ver y good condition. As far back as I can remember, it was in my grandparents’ living room. Thank you for any information you can provide regarding the vintage and insurance value.
Slag glass lamp made around 1920.
A: You have an electric slag-glass lamp
with metal overlay. The lighted base makes your lamp more desirable. It was made around 1920. Even though some were marked, many were not. Collectors prefer those that were marked. Your lamp should be insured in the range of $500 to $1,000. *** Q: This mark is on the bottom of a porcelain figurine of a young woman. She stands on a base, is about 9 inches tall and is in mint condition. She is wearing an 18th-centur y gown trimmed with lace, has an elaborate hairstyle and is holding a basket of flowers. I inherited this figurine and know nothing about it. What can you tell me about its age, maker and value?

*** Q: I would appreciate knowing the value of my mother’s 1920s purple glass dresser set. The pattern is “Grape and Cable” and includes a small tray, a larger tray, a hatpin holder and two covered containers. It has been packed away so long I can’t remember if there are more pieces.
A: Your dresser set is an example of pur-
ple/amethyst carnival glass. Sets often included a pin tray, a larger jewelry tray, a hatpin holder, a puff box for powder, a hair receiver and two perfume bottles. Carnival glass is pressed glass with an iridescent finish. It was created by American glass factories and inspired by Tiffany glass. Carnival glass was not expensive and often given away at carnivals, thus the name. The purple “Grape and Cable” pattern was extremely popular and was made by several companies including Northwood, Fenton and Imperial. Some pieces were marked while others were not. Your dresser set would probably be worth $600 to $1,100. * * *

* On Oct. 26, 1774, the First Continental Congress sent a petition to England’s King George III informing him that if not for the oppressive acts forced upon the colonies by the British Parliament, the American people would be standing behind British rule. * On Oct. 27, 1975, Bruce Springsteen became the first rock musician to appear on the covers of both TIME and Newsweek magazine in a single week. This feat, which was usually limited to presidents or other world leaders, fueled the energy behind his third album, “Born to Run,” and helped make him a household name. * On Oct. 28, 1834, a group of European settlers led by the governor of Western Australia attacked a Bindjareb Noongar camp, killing somewhere between 11 and 80 people. The incident became known as the Pinjarra Massacre and was the culmination of escalating tensions between Australian Aboriginal peoples and settlers during the colony’s early years. * On Oct. 29, 2024, a study published in the journal Antiquity revealed the discovery of an enormous, 1,500-year-old Mayan city hidden in the jungles of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. It contained more than 6,000 structures, including pyramids like the ones at Chichen Itza. * On Oct. 30, 1896, the Boston Symphony Orchestra debuted Amy Beach’s “Gaelic Symphony,” the first by an American female composer to garner public attention. Beach cited the “simple, rugged and unpretentious beauty” of Irish tunes as her inspiration for the piece. * On Oct. 31, 1961, five years after Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev denounced Stalinism and the “personality cult” of Soviet rulers at the 20th Party Congress, Joseph Stalin’s embalmed body was secretly removed from the tomb of his predecessor, Vladimir Lenin, in Moscow’s Red Square, and reinterred near the Kremlin wall. * On Nov. 1, 1512, Michelangelo’s famous ceiling frescoes in the Sistine Chapel were first exhibited to the general public in Vatican City. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, they spanned thousands of square feet, included more than 300 figures, and took several years to complete. (c) 2026 King Features Synd., Inc.
