they needed a way to propel the wings through the air, enabling their invention to fly. • They found a small, lightweight engine that generated about 12 horsepower, the equivalent of about two or so of today's lawn mower motors. On December, 17, 1903, the brothers set off for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, where they flew the first controlled flight of a powerdriven airplane. The 600-pound device was constructed of spruce with muslin covering the wing frames. • There were four flights that day, two by each brother. Orville flew first for a distance of 120 feet in 12 seconds with a speed of 6.8 mph. The second flight was 175 feet; the third, 200 feet at a height of about ten feet above the ground. The final flight, piloted by Wilbur, covered a distance of 852 feet with a flight time of 59 seconds. The success of these flights were an aviation breakthrough that forever changed the course of world history.

* The rarest shape for a human nose is the bulbous type, exemplified by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. * Smuggling a cat out of ancient Egypt was punishable by death. * A variety of corn grown in Peru has kernels so large that they’re eaten individually. * After impressionist painter Claude Monet developed cataracts, he agreed to have surgery on his right eye only. It is believed that afterwards he could see and paint a wide spectrum of colors usually not seen by the human eye. * Dinosaurs often swallowed large rocks, which stayed in their stomachs and helped them grind up food. * One in 23 million people have an allergy to water. * In 1631, royal printers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas published a Bible containing the typo “Thou Shalt Commit Adultery.” As if that weren’t embarrassing enough, another misprint, in Deuteronomy, substituted the word “greatnesse” with “great-asse.” Barker and Lucas were fined 300 pounds and lost their printing license. Less than a dozen copies of what came to be known as the “Wicked,” “Sinful” and “Adulterous” Bible are known to exist today and are highly prized by collectors. * On average, a person’s eyes make 15 to 30 gallons of tears a year. * The air around a lightning bolt is five times hotter than the surface of the sun. * While rare, there have been enough reported cases of strokes triggered by spa massage treatments that the medical community has nicknamed the phenomenon “beauty parlor stroke syndrome.” *** Thought for the Day: “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” -- Bill Bradley (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

in a covered canister. LEFTOVER INVENTORY A great way to avoid cleaning out the dreaded leftovers in the refrigerator is to keep a leftover inventory. Place a dry-erase board on the front of your fridge, and each time you put a leftover in the fridge, write it down alongside the date. PLASTIC KEEPS IT CLEAN Place a sheet of plastic wrap on the top of your food processor’s bowl before applying the lid. When you remove it, all of the splatters will be confined to the bowl, and the lid will be spotless! SOFT SUGAR To keep brown sugar soft, store it in a wide-mouth jar. Place a slice of bread (the heel, if possible) on top of the sugar, and apply the lid. Leave it on the pantry shelf, and you’ll have beautiful, soft brown sugar all the time. Amazingly, the bread does not mold. Replace the bread with a new slice each time you open the jar. TIE IT IN A BOW To keep dry onions fresh for a long time, cut a leg from a pair of clean pantyhose. Slice open the toe, and then tie it tightly with a piece of yarn into a bow. Now drop an onion into the toe area, and tie another yarn bow above it. Repeat until the leg is filled with onions. Hang it to allow the onions air space. When you need an onion, simply untie the bottom bow. This makes the pantyhose leg reusable. * * *

® Here is a wonderfully creative collection of tips that spotlight my readers’ resourcefulby Mary Hunt ness and intelligence in the kitchen and pantry. From clever tricks involving coffee filters, kitchen mallets and shower caps (yes, shower caps!) to simple storage solutions for sugars and spices -- get ready to take conventional wisdom to an unconventional level. CALCIUM STRETCH Add powdered milk to meatloaf, meatballs and cookie recipes. It’s a good way to add calcium to your diet. Most kids won’t touch milk made from powder, but if it’s mixed into other foods, they won’t even know it’s there. CHEAP CLIPS Need a cheap but effective way to clamp shut your chip bags? Perhaps you’ve heard the expression: If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands. That’s writer Douglas Adams’ version, anyway. The point is, things usually are what they seem. The key is to treat them as such. This cuts to the core of our relationships with our dogs. Understanding that your dog is a dog is the solid slab of concrete on which the rest of your relationship is built. Understanding what it means that your dog is a dog is our first priority as responsible dog owners. The vast majority of the people who call me for help with their dog problems are actually, themselves, the real problem. They refer to their dogs as their baby, their sweetheart, their cutie pie -- terms usually reserved for a romantic partner. And yes, women are more likely than men to anthropomorphize their dogs. Dog commands from these people sound a little something like: “Don’t do that.” “Don’t sniff there.” “Don’t you run away from me.” And none of those is decipherable to a dog. This type of dog owner calls me because they’re convinced their dog is angry that they have to go to work in the morning, or he’s upset about their upcoming move to a new city, or he’s jealous because she’s started seeing someone new. Would you ask a horse whether he was content with his new stall? Why is it any different with a dog? When most people bring a dog home, he becomes a full-fledged member of the family. He’s lovingly welcomed into the nest, where he remains for about 15 years. As it should be. But he’s still a dog. A woman called me recently to discuss her dog, who sleeps in her bed. “Why does he growl when I move around?” she asked. Because he thinks it’s his bed. He’s no longer being treated as a dog, he’s now confused, and here comes the trouble. Cody's Corner: Turn to Page 8

all be back to our normal lives. Then I later moved that back to September. And here we are, 15 months later, still wearing masks and either staying home or carrying hand sanitizer with us if we venture out, maintaining distancing from strangers.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles © King Features Synd., Inc.

What Will We Do With Our Time? What did we really accomplish this past year? We’ve had time, certainly, with all these lockdown days, weeks and months of isolation. We've had plenty of time to do any number of things. After reviewing my year of COVID, I realize that I could have done so much more, had I only known just how long “flattening the curve” was actually going to take.

I’m determined not to let another year go by with so little to show for it. I’ve picked out my interior paint colors. Now I’ll order the paint and go collect it curbside at the hardware store. The first file of a new novel is ready, with “Chapter 1”, a first paragraph and a sketchy synopsis of the storyline. It’s a start. My Duolingo account is still there, holding my place where I left off many months ago.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com.

* Painted every room of the house three times over. Yet here I sit with color swatches still taped to the wall where I put them last spring when I thought that interior painting would be a good summer project.

(from page 7)

If you treat your dog like a dog, love your dog like a dog and train your dog to be the best dog he can be, you won’t confuse him -- or yourself. If you’re going to bring a dog into your home, into your life, you need to understand canine behavior. You need to educate yourself first, and then your dog, in order to bridge the communication gap. Living with a dog when you have little to no understanding of canine behavior and when neither of you has been taught to effectively communicate with the other is like traveling in a country where you don’t speak the language: stressful at times and not nearly as fun as it would be otherwise. But the saddest part of turning your dog into a person is that you inevitably lose sight of the dog. He becomes a surrogate child or a surrogate friend or a surrogate lover instead of the wonderful dog he is. Woof! * * *

Sadly, it’s possible that in another year, we’ll all still be right where we are now. I hope not. What will you do with the time? * * *

By my calculations, I could have accomplished the following:

this rule. The most common is this: If you work for a U.S. corporation overseas, then you are subject to the more lenient earnings penalty rules that apply to U.S. residents. If you are getting Social Security disability benefits while living overseas, the same rules apply to you as apply to people living in this country. That means, for example, that your claim will be periodically reviewed to make sure you are still disabled. If you are a U.S. citizen living overseas, the benefits you receive are subject to the same income tax payments that apply to U.S. residents. If you are not a U.S. citizen, then the SSA will automatically withhold a portion of your benefits to cover possible tax obligations -- although there are some exceptions to that rule. Most people living overseas have their benefits sent by direct deposit to a bank in the country where they are living. On page 27 of the booklet mentioned earlier in this column, there is a long list of countries that have an international direct deposit treaty agreement with the United States. Assuming you have moved to one of those countries, you will have no problem getting your benefits electronically. If you need to conduct some kind of Social Security business once you are living overseas, you obviously can’t just drive across town and visit your local Social Security office. But every U.S. embassy and consulate has a person on staff who is trained to handle Social Security business. So, they are a good source of information and help. Or, assuming you have internet access, you can use the SSA’s website. One final point. Your Medicare coverage only works while you are living in the United States. So, if you move to a foreign country and think you will be there for good, you might as well cancel the parts of Medicare for which you pay a monthly premium. These are usually Part B (medical insurance) and Part D (drug insurance). The key to understanding all of this is reading that booklet I mentioned. I will warn you that it can be a little daunting at first, just because there are so many rules and so many potential variables to those rules depending on your citizenship status, the kind of benefit you are getting and where you plan to live. Just be patient, and I think it will all sink in eventually. Other than that, bon voyage! And send me a postcard from one of those pretty golden beaches in Belize. * * * If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-

plans are HMOs or

PPOs and require you to use doctors, hospitals and pharmacies that are in the plan’s network within a service area or geographic region. So, if you’re traveling outside that area you may need to pay a higher fee, or your services may not be covered at all. If you do decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, be sure you check the benefit details carefully to see what costs and rules apply when traveling outside your service area. Traveling Abroad If you’re planning to travel abroad much, a Medicare Advantage plan may be a better option because many Advantage plans today offer emergency care coverage outside the U.S. But be sure you check before you choose a plan because not all plans offer it. Original Medicare, on the other hand does not provide coverage outside the U.S. and its territories except in rare circumstances (see Medicare.gov/coverage/travel), and Medicare drug plans will not cover prescription drugs purchased outside the U.S. either. But if you do choose original Medicare, you can still get some coverage abroad through a Medigap policy. Plans D, G, M and N plans will pay for 80 percent of medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. to new enrollees, but only for the first 60 days of the trip, and you have to meet an annual $250 deductible first. There’s also a lifetime limit of $50,000, so you’d need to cover any costs above that amount. Some beneficiaries, regardless of their Medicare coverage, purchase travel medical insurance for trips abroad, which you can shop for at InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth.com.

Aviation Facts (from page 3) speed of sound, reaching Mach 1.07 (700 mph) at an altitude of 45,000 feet. He was flying a rocket engine-powered Bell X-1 aircraft above the Mojave Desert. Yeager went on to become a fighter pilot in Vietnam, flying 127 combat missions, and rising to the rank of Brigadier General. • In 1906, while racing a car at 100 mph, Harriet Quimby was exhilarated by the thrill of speed, which led her to enroll in New York’s Moisant School of Aviation. In 1911, she became the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license. The following year, she accomplished another first – the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Sadly, less than three months later while participating in an aviation meet in Massachusetts, her aircraft abruptly and unexpectedly pitched forward. The plane was not equipped with safety harnesses, and both Quimby and her male passenger were ejected from their seats and fell to their deaths. • Quimby, however, wasn’t the world's first woman to receive a pilot’s license. That honor belongs to French Baroness Madame Raymonde de Laroche, a gifted engineer who earned that distinction in March, 1910. She took honors for a non-stop flight of four hours, followed by a women’s altitude record of 15,700 feet. With hopes of becoming the first female test pilot, she was piloting an experimental aircraft when it crashed on its landing approach, tragically killing the 36-year-old aviation pioneer.
