An enormous supply of wonderful dogs exists in the hundreds of shelters across the country. Beyond that, and often working in tandem, is a growing army of rescue organizations. They, along with shelters, do the work of angels.

One of the most influential rescue groups in the nation is Best Friends Animal Society. Their purpose? A better world through kindness to animals.

Their outreach? Extends far and wide through a grassroots network of hardworking people and organizations that care about the welfare of animals.

Their influence? Leading by example, they’ve come miles in changing the conventional notion that little could be done to reduce the gutwrenching number of dogs and cats killed in shelters year after year.

That number when Best Friends got started in the late ‘80s: 17 million.

That number today: 1.5 million.

That is a huge reduction. But the euthanization of 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats a year is nothing to cheer. But the steep decline is proof that single-minded purpose and widespread efforts toward education can tame even the most pervasive of epidemics.

For rescue groups, the education of pet owners is key. They promote spay and neuter programs. They require an application and home check if you want to adopt one of their animals.

This ensures a high probability that the match will stick. But if for whatever reason it doesn’t, they ask only that you return the animal to their care.

A distinguishing feature of rescue groups is the foster system. Volunteers foster animals in their homes and, in the process, get to the know the dogs individually and in a presumably saner environment than that of a shelter. Foster parents offer a degree of insight into a dog’s personality and habits that is otherwise hard to come by. Often, they’re able to provide some basic obedience training, making successful adoption all the more likely.

So many things have changed in how we live our lives in the time of COVID. It’s been a year since it all began in earnest and, despite the vaccines, nothing has really gone back to normal. Even small tasks have a layer of “more difficult” on them ... such as buying a new handheld vacuum cleaner.

The battery charge in my little handheld vac began dying after just a short time. I tried to baby it along, but now even with a full overnight charge, it only runs for 42 seconds before it quits again and wants another long charge.

In every sense, these groups take the word “rescue” to heart, manning the front lines during and after natural disasters, searching abandoned and ravaged neighborhoods for starving, distressed and injured pets. They provide temporary homes for as many of these animals as possible and drive the effort to reunite them with their owners.

Equally vital is their work in the wake of manmade disasters such as puppy mill raids and dog fighting busts. Twenty-two pit bulls seized during the highly publicized Michael Vick episode several years ago were placed in special care at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. After intense rehabilitation, some were adopted into loving and experienced homes. Others lived out their lives at the sanctuary. They were the “Vicktory Dogs.”

People looking to adopt from a rescue organization will find breed-specific rescues, areaspecific rescues, groups that zero in on dogs with special medical or behavioral needs, and those that focus their efforts on small dogs, big dogs, senior citizen dogs, refugee dogs, and dogs that were scheduled for euthanasia at a shelter.

In fact, combing high-kill and overcrowded shelters is a big and commendable part of the work of rescue groups.

Never Send Unsolicited Money to the SSA Every once in a while, I get an email from a reader with a horror story of sorts involving sending unsolicited money to the Social Security Administration to pay back benefits that were received but were not due.

Here is my advice: Never send money to the SSA until you are asked to do so. To explain this further, let’s look at some emails I recently received.

Q: I wasn’t working, so I applied for my Social Security benefits at age 62. But a couple of months later, I got a high-paying full-time job. So, I put in the paperwork to withdraw my Social Security claim. My checks eventually stopped. But not until I had received approximately $5,000 in benefit payments. So, I wrote out a check for that amount and sent it to the SSA. Months went by. The check was never cashed. I called the SSA’s toll-free number. They could find no record of the check.

So, I canceled that check. Now what can I do?
