Seeds (from page one) which is 62 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. Redwood needles are only 1/4 inch to one inch in length, and the cones are only an inch long. It takes 6,000 redwood seeds to weigh one ounce. SEED GERMINATION
• Even if a seed is planted upside down, it always grows right-side up. The roots of the seedling grow down towards gravity, while the stem grows upward toward light. • Researchers studied plants on the International Space Station to see how plant roots developed in weightlessness. In the absence of gravity, the seed just picked a direction that was “down” and sent the roots out, while the stem grew in the opposite direction. No gravity required.

• What’s the difference between bulbs, tubers, corms, and rhizomes? Bulbs consist of modified leaves that grow underground (onion); corms are swollen stem bases (crocus); tubers are thick underground stems (potato); and rhizomes are swollen stems that grow horizontally (ginger).
• Many species of birds such as nutcrackers, nuthatches, and jays stash seeds in thousands of hiding spots for later retrieval. A single Clark’s nutcracker can stash between 22,000 and 33,000 seeds in up to 7,500 different places2. Seeds: Turn to page 15

A: You’re thinking of “Playmakers,” an ESPN original drama series that, despite high ratings, was given the ax three months after it premiered in August 2003. It was about a fictional NFL team, but rumor has it that NFL executives didn’t like how the players were depicted off the field and wanted to preserve their image. I think the show would have survived had it aired on a different network. * * *

the Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso,” is a 29-yearold British actor. He’s not related to the late, great Dom DeLuise or his offspring, but he’s a joy to watch even when he’s playing the bad guy. Dunster’s previous roles include playing a count in the Helen Mirren HBO limited series “Catherine the Great” and a Phil Dunster colonel in the in "Ted Lasso" 2017 Kenneth Branagh film “Murder on the Orient Express.” In an interview with AV Club about how they film the professional soccer scenes, Dunster said: “We have a dedicated sports choreography team for the show. We had a dedicated football director on season 2 who has worked a lot with shooting football. ... It takes a lot of time and good editors, which luckily we have, to make me look like Jamie Tartt.” In addition to being represented in England, Dunster just signed with the American talent agency CAA, so, in my opinion, it’s just a matter
of time before we start seeing his name above the title at your local cinema. In the meantime, look for season three of “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+ next summer. *** Q: Is the game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” ever coming back to prime time? I loved the brief run it had last year with host Jimmy Kimmel, although Regis Philbin is my all-time favorite host. -- C.K.

Barking is as natural as breathing. Triggered by a state of excitement, barking is a dog’s means of communicating anger, loneliness, fear, playfulness or a need for something. Excessive barking is barking’s obnoxious and intolerable cousin. It’s an exaggeration of natural canine behavior that can only be eliminated by either giving in to the dog’s demand or reconditioning the dog. I’d advise doing the latter -- yesterday. The excessive barking of an overindulged or neglected dog has ruined friendships, destroyed relationships and added to the overwhelm of courts already jammed with frivolous concerns that are largely solvable without the aid of lawyers and judges. Time and money are wasted. Friends and credibility are lost. Furthermore, if you’re a renter, you may come home to find yourself staring at a notice to vacate. So don’t ignore your neighbor’s complaints about your dog’s barking. Instead, first find out whether you have a dog problem or a neighbor problem. Do a little sleuthing. Leave the dog with a friend or relative, or board him at a local kennel for a few days. During that time, ask your neighbor whether the barking has been a problem. If he complains even when the dog isn’t there, you have a neighbor problem. But if the dog turns out to be the culprit, there are adjustments that can and should be made to your approach, to the dog’s environment and/or to the dog’s temperament. Possible reasons behind excessive barking are vast but rarely mysterious: tethering, improper confinement (e.g., in a room behind a closed door), outside distractions (e.g., construction, stray animals, lawnmowers, a steady stream of strangers), bad weather, separation anxiety, heightened territorialism, lack of exercise, genetics, temperament, hunger... There’s a great cartoon that features an impatient pup sitting next to an empty food bowl at the feet of his master, an artist consumed with the masterpiece-in-the-making on the easel before him. YOUR
SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau
Questions from My Women Readers
In last week’s column, I presented a brief overview of the Social Security rules that apply to women. Today’s column has some common questions that I get from women that will help clarify those rules. Q: Ever y woman I know is getting half of her husband’s Social Security. But I’m getting nowhere near that. Why don’t I get half?
A: Although each questioner will
phrase her inquiry differently, this is probably the most common question a woman will ask me. A woman will get half of her husband’s Social Security (assuming it is more than her own retirement benefit) if she waits until her full retirement age to claim spousal benefits. My guess is that you started your benefits before then. If you took them at age 62, for example, you should be getting about one-third of your husband’s Social Security. And frankly, I doubt if “every woman (you) know” is getting half of her husband’s Social Security. Statistics show the majority of women get their own retirement benefit. And those eligible for benefits as a wife usually start taking benefits before their full retirement age, which means most women are getting less than the 50% spousal rate. And if some form of “Why don’t I get half my husband’s Social Security?” is the most common question I get, here is the second most common. Q: I just turned 62. My 68-year-old husband is already getting his benefits. He says I should take reduced spousal benefits on his record now and then at my full retirement age, switch to 100% of my own Social Security. How do I go about doing that?
A: You can’t do that. The rules say you must always file for your own Social Security benefits first. Once you’ve done that, then you can see if you might be due any extra spousal benefits on your husband’s record. Or to answer your question a different way, you generally can’t take reduced benefits on one record while holding off to get higher benefits on another record later on. This next question is a bit of a twist on this scenario.
Q: I am about to turn 62. My husband also is 62. I want to file for my own Social Security now. My husband, who was the much higher wage earner, plans to wait until he is 67 to file for his. If I file for my own now, can I later switch to higher spousal benefits on his record?
A: Yes, you can do that. The difference between your case and the case of the
Page 11

woman who asked the previous question is that her husband is already getting benefits, while your husband will be filing for benefits in the future. So that woman must file for all benefits she is due (her own and spousal benefits) at the same time. But in your case, at the time you will be filing for your Social Security your husband won’t be on the beneficiary rolls, so you can only file for your own benefits. But once he applies for Social Security, you can see if you will get anything extra on his record. And this next question adds yet another twist to the story.
For future planning purposes, you should know that a widow’s benefit is always based on the husband’s full rate, including any extra benefits he got for starting his Social Security later. So, if your husband dies before you do, you will start getting his full age 70 rate in the form of widow’s benefits.
Q: We have a bit of a different situation from the norm. I always earned more money than my husband, so now I get a higher Social Security benefit than he receives. Someone told me that if I die first, he won’t get anything extra from my ac Q: My husband recently filed for count because only women can get widhis Social Security at age 67. I am turning ow’s benefits. Is this true? 62. You answered my email a few weeks ago telling me that I could not file for my A: Well, technically it’s true that only husband’s benefit now and let my benefit women get “widow’s” benefits. But a man, incontinue to grow by filing for it later. But I cluding your husband, would certainly be enhave a good friend who did just that. She titled to “widower’s” benefits. How to Protect Yourself Against Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
ADVERTISING PROOF Final Changes DUE: Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 5:00 p.m..
Detection and Treatment Because AAAs usually start small and enlarge slowly, they rarely show any symptoms, making them difficult to detect. However, large AAAs can sometimes cause a throbbing or pulsation in the abdomen or cause a deep pain in your lower back or side.
Dear Almost: While you don’t hear much about them, stomach aneurysms, also known as abdominal aortic aneurysms, are very dangerous and the 10th leading cause of death in men over 55. They also tend to run in families, so having had a parent with this condition makes you more vulnerable yourself.
email: valleybits@msn.com
The best way to detect an AAA is to get a simple, painless, 10-minute ultrasound screening test. All men over age 65 and anyone over 60 with a first-degree relative (father, mother or sibling) who has had an AAA should talk to their doctor about getting screened.
DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you tell me about stomach aneurysms? My father died from one about ten years ago and I’m wondering if that can increase my risk of developing one myself. --Almost 60
You should also know that most health insurance plans cover AAA screenings, as does Medicare to beneficiaries with a family history of AAAs.

What if I Become Eligible for Medicare After I Join a Marketplace Plan? If you have coverage through an individual Marketplace plan, (Covered California or Obamacare, not through an employer), you should end your Marketplace coverage and enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). A Journey to the Next Life Q:
Enclosed is a photo of a Sick Call box that hung in my husband’s bedroom when he was a boy. It originally belonged to his grandmother. The frame is wood, and there is a compar tment at the bottom that contains a crucifix, tray, a cruet for holy oil, candles and a holy water bottle. At the top are painted figures of Sick Call boxes were popular around 1900. Mar y and Jesus. Below there is a door that drops open to reveal a storage area. The outside of the
You have a circa 1900 Religious Call shrine/shadow box. They were often found in Catholic homes in the late 1800s and early 1900s and used by a priest to administer the Sacrament of Last Rites to a seriously ill or dying person. They usually contained a bottle of holy water, a silver tray with the letters “IHS,” candles, candleholders, a crucifix and a cruet for holy oil. “IHS” are letters that stand for the Greek words for Jesus Christ and “Vaticum” is Latin for “provisions for a journey to the afterlife.” Despite antique Religious Call boxes not being in high demand, value for one in good condition can run from around $150 to $250. *** I will be 90 years old in March, and I have a ser vice for 12 set of porcelain dishes that includes all the ser ving pieces. I have drawn the mark that is on back of each dish. The dishes are decorated with big pink roses, green leaves and gold trim. They are around 50 to 60 years old, in absolutely perfect condition and have never been used. My daughter wants the set when I’m gone, so please let me know the value of my dishes.

in a single season. SEED DISPERSAL VIA PLANTS
• Plants have many ways of spreading or dispersing their seeds: --Gravity - heavy seeds simply fall off the plant (acorn).
CLIP AND SAVE
--Wind - very fine seeds blow away on the wind using parachutes (dandelion) or wings (maple). --Hooks - the seeds catch on the fur or clothing of a passing animal, to be rubbed off later (cocklebur). --Pepperpot - the seed-pod sprinkles the seeds over the ground when shaken by the wind (poppy). --Exploding - the seed-pod bursts suddenly, throwing all the seeds out over a large area (impatiens). --Floating - seeds grow with air trapped in them, so they can float downstream away from the parent plant (water hyacinth). --Tumbleweeds - the entire plant breaks off and is blown across open country, scattering seeds as it rolls across the prairie. • Some types of pine trees drop pine cones on the forest floor that are so tightly sealed and heavily coated with resin that they cannot open to spread their seeds until a forest fire subjects them to scorching heat. This melts the resin and allows the cone to open, releasing the seeds into freshly cleared land that’s rich with nutritious ash and ideal for new growth. • Each annoying cocklebur that you pluck from your socks contains two seeds. One is programmed to germinate the next spring, and the other is programmed to germinate the second spring. This doubles its chances of encountering good growing conditions. • While the cocklebur is universally thought of as a nuisance plant, its unique hook and loop design has also resulted in the serendipitous discovery of one our great modern day conveniences -- Velcro. □

It can be quite difficult to make breaking putts where you have to aim more than a foot to the left or the right of the hole. It’s partly a guess on the line to take and then how hard to hit it on that intention. While many golfers will say that speed is everything, you’ll need a proper mix of line and speed to make those putts. When practicing larger breaking putts, try laying down a half dozen balls in a pattern illustrated below. Start with the actual ball to be hit, but then place balls progressively from the hole backwards. You’ll focus on how the ball enters the hole, how much it may curve at the end of the putt, and visualize how the entire putt would look before you hit it. This illustration will give you a better understanding of line and speed that you need to guess on for that putt. There is no perfect combination, but keep in mind “higher and softer” usually results in less three putts from short range.
