I recently heard from a woman who has three dogs and one enduring problem: They jump.

On everyone and everything.

This problem has been going on for years.

Her solution? Yell the word “no” whenever the dogs jump on someone who would rather they didn’t.

In the meantime, when it’s just family and when the dogs are at home, they’re allowed to jump on people, and they’re allowed to jump on the furniture. In fact, they’re encouraged to do it.

It’s an all too common story: Mom comes home. The dogs go nuts. They do their little happy dance, which includes a lot of spinning and barking and wagging and jumping. It’s adorable. It’s heartwarming. It’s a wonderful ritual. And it’s conditioning.

Whether it’s the right behavior or the wrong behavior, and whether or not we realize we’re doing it, we condition our dogs to behave in certain ways.

If every time you walk through the front door your dogs jump all over you, and if you, in turn, squeal in delight and kiss them all over, you are essentially telling them you love it when they jump! Yes, yes! Do it again!

One of the benefits of dog training is that you, the owner, gain a deeper understanding of how your behavior affects your dog. Your posture, your body language, your voice, the tone of your voice, your energy and even your words all play a role in conditioning your dog.

When I asked the owner of the trio of jumpers why she hadn’t trained her dogs, she said she was afraid training would “rob the dogs of their spirit.”

Something to keep in mind when searching for a dog trainer: Good training utilizes love, praise and affection to inform the dog of desirable behaviors. It should in no way rob the dog of his personality.

Bad training involves yelling and a host of punishments, and it usually creates bigger problems down the line. Ironically, this is exactly what

Social Security Update for 2022

It has been my custom for most of the past 24 years to write a year-end column that summarizes the Social Security changes and updates scheduled to take place the following year.

Almost all Social Security beneficiaries are familiar with the most popular and publicized upcoming change: the increase in monthly benefit checks for 2022 due to the automated cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. In fact, Social Security recipients have probably already received a letter from the Social Security Administration telling them of the expected increase.

All Social Security checks are going up 5.9% in 2022. The COLA is based on something called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. This is the official measuring stick the SSA has used to determine COLAs for the past 47 years. If you want to learn more about this measure, check out the website of the folks who maintain it: the Bureau of Labor Statistics. You’ll find them at www.bls.gov.

And even though this is the biggest increase in many decades, I always dread mentioning COLAs in this column because every single time I do, I am flooded with emails from readers complaining that the increase is not enough.

Yet here’s the rub: many economists and social planners believe Social Security COLAs are too generous! (I’ve explained why in past columns, but don’t have the space to get into that argument today.) That’s why most discussions of long-range reform for Social Security include proposals to reduce cost of living increases.

OK, back to the 2022 Social Security COLA. Due to these increases, the average monthly retirement check will be $1,657 in 2022, an almost 100-dollar increase from the 2021 level. The maximum Social Security check for a worker turning full retirement age in 2022 will be $3,345, compared to $3,148 in 2021. And please note that $3,345 is the maximum for someone turning full retirement age in 2022. That does not mean it is the maximum Social Security payment anyone can receive. There are millions of Social Security beneficiaries who get much more than that, primarily because they worked well past their FRA and/or delayed starting their benefits until age 70.

Although this is a Social Security column, I must mention the upcoming increase in the Medicare Part B premium, which is deducted from Social Security checks for most people. In 2022, the basic Part B premium will be $170.10, a $21.60 increase from the 2021 rate. And as has been the case for 20 years now, wealthy people will pay more than the basic premium.

I don’t want to get into this complicated issue of Medicare premiums other than to make this quick point. Even though they are linked in the minds of most older adults, Social Security and Medicare are entirely separate programs, administered by entirely separate federal agencies, and they have entirely separate rules and regulations regarding their benefit and payment structures.

For example, I already explained how Social Security COLAs are figured. The Part B Medicare premium increase has nothing to do with the CPI.

Get Organized

The first step in getting your affairs in order is to gather up all your important personal, financial and legal information so you can arrange it in a format that will be of great benefit you now, and to your loved ones later.

FINANCIAL RECORDS

Financial accounts: Make a list of all your bank accounts, brokerage and mutual fund accounts, and any other financial assets you have.

Then you’ll need to sit down and create various lists of important information and instructions of how you want certain things handled when you die or if you become incapacitated.

Here’s a checklist of areas you need to focus on.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Contacts: Make a master list of names and phone numbers of close friends, doctors, and professional advisers such as your lawyer, accountant, broker and insurance agent.

Medical information: Include a list of medications you take, along with any allergies and illnesses.

Personal documents: Include such items as your birth certificate, Social Security documents, marriage license, military discharge papers, etc.

Debts and liabilities: Make a list of any loans, leases or debts you have – mortgages owed, car loans, student loans, medical bills, credit card debts. Also, make a list of all credit and charge cards, including the card numbers

Insurance: List the insurance policies you have (life, long-term care, home, auto, Medicare, Medigap, prescription drug, etc.) including the policy numbers, agents, and phone numbers.

Property: List real estate, vehicles and other properties you own, rent or lease and include documents such as deeds, titles, and loan or lease agreements.

Taxes: Include the location of your tax records and your tax preparer’s contact information.

Keep all your organized information and files together in one convenient location, ideally in a fireproof filing cabinet or safe in your home.

Also be sure to review and update it every year, and don’t forget to tell your kids where they can find it.

Antique Buffet Fit for a Continental Breakfast

Q: My husband purchased this antique buffet seen in this photo. He found it at a moving sale in Texas about six years ago and paid $100 for it. It is over seven feet long and is decorated with car vings of medieval figures and has large bun-shaped feet. Someone who saw it said his parents had one ver y similar to it, and he thought it was made in Europe, possibly Germany. He then offered my husband $800 for it, which he turned down because we wanted to keep it.

Can you tell where you think it is from, about how old it is and its value? Any information you can furnish would be greatly appreciated.

Cattail pattern was made for Sears Roebuck and Company.

A: Universal Potteries Inc. made your semi-porcelain water pitcher. The round shape was inspired by Art Deco designs. They made semiporcelain kitchenware and dinnerware and were located in Cambridge, Ohio, from 1934 to 1976.

The “Cattail” pattern was made for Sears, Roebuck and Company in the 1930s and 1940s. The design is a decal rather than hand painted. The pattern was used on a plethora of dishes that included water pitchers, butter dishes, platters, bowls, salt and peppershakers, cups and saucers. The popular pattern can also be found on table linens, glassware and tinware.

Your water pitcher can be found selling in antiques shops in the range of $50 to $75.
