How to Remove Rust Stains from Just About Anything

If there’s one subject that shows up in my inbox more oftenEveryday than any other, it has to be rust. Ugly, orange-ish stains on tubs, showers, toilets, washing machines, sinks CHEAPSKATE and even stainless steel.

One reader (who shall remain nameless, as I have hopelessly misplaced your message) wrote that tiny rust marks have appeared on his new stainless steel refrigerator. Sadly, the manufacturer considers this a cosmetic issue, so the warranty does not apply.

So today, for my nameless friend, plus all others who’ve written about annoying rust problems in the kitchen and bathroom, I have a story followed by a very effective, if not exciting, solution.

The year was 1882. The setting: Indianapolis. A chemist took a break from his scholarly endeavors to cook up a pan of rhubarb, that sour but hardy vegetable, common in the gardens of yore.

After plating his recipe, the man found that his formerly tarnished pot fairly sparkled. Being a chemist, he quickly ruled out magic and set out to discover what it was that made rhubarb such a superior cleaning agent.

The secret is oxalic acid. Found naturally in rhubarb and other vegetables such as spinach, oxalic acid attacks stubborn rust, tarnish and lime stains at the molecular level, breaking the bonds that hold them together.

Using that active ingredient, the chemist formulated an oxalic acid-based cleaning powder that he sold to taverns for use as a brass rail polish. Thrilled at the results, tavern owners dubbed the product -- get ready -- Bar Keepers Friend.

Over the years, more and more people got in on the secret of Bar Keepers Friend, discovering more varied and unique uses for this cleaning powder still available in the cleaning aisle of just about every supermarket.

A: The main cast of “Lost” became household names shortly after it premiered in 2004, including Naveen Andrews, who played one of the heroic survivors of the fictional Oceanic Flight 815. He’s worked steadily ever since in short-lived series like “Sense8” and “Instinct.”

Next up, he’ll co-star alongside Amanda Seyfried in “The Dropout” on Naveen Andrews Hulu, which is based on Elizabeth Holmes, the young biotech company owner who was on trial for fraud. Syrupy Banana-Nut Overnight French Toast

A great make-ahead brunch recipe. Serve with bacon or sausage, and fruit salad. Your guests will love this refreshing treatment of a favorite breakfast meal!

Baked Chocolate Pudding

This easy, yet impressive, dessert can be made in advance and heated when you’re ready to serve it, making it the perfect choice when you’re hosting a large group. The splash of framboise in the pudding adds an elegant touch.

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing

3/4 cup good-quality cocoa powder

6 tablespoons butter or margarine

1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar

5 large ripe bananas

1 long loaf French or Italian bread

6 large eggs

2 cups milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup sliced almonds or coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans

1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped

1 tablespoon framboise liqueur (optional)

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Lightly butter 2-quart shallow oval baking dish.

2. Into medium bowl, sift together cocoa powder and flour. In large bowl, with mixer on medium-high speed, beat eggs and sugar 5 to 10 minutes or until very thick and light yellow.

3. Reduce speed to low; add vanilla seeds, framboise (if using) and cocoa mixture.

Mix just until combined. Slowly pour in butter; mix just until combined.

4. Pour mixture into prepared dish set in larger baking pan. Add hot tap water to pan to come halfway up side of dish.

The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap. Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life. Acceptance is the antidote to denial.

Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long. And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog.

An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- if you ask him. If you ask them, they’re having trouble with his dogs.

I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor redhanded provoking my dogs.”

Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are exaggerating or lying. The irony is that he is an elementary-school teacher. No one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children.

Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive.

A Big, Dumb Jerk Takes a Tumble!

I recently shared a humorous story about a trip I took to Poland in the 1990s to train some of their Social Security officials on how we handled information outreach to American citizens about our Social Security programs. I received so much positive feedback on that column. Here is a typical example: “I have been a faithful reader of your column for many years. I have learned so much about Social Security. But it’s nice to get a break once in a while from all the details about that complicated program and read some of your human-interest stories. Keep them coming!”

Well, it’s the holiday season and maybe we can take another little break from all the nitty-gritty details of Social Security, and I can share another funny story with you.

This story takes place around Christmastime in 1997. My family and I had just moved to San Diego, California -- where I was in charge of publicaffairs activities for the Social Security Administration in that part of the country. In addition to being the frontman for the SSA with local media outlets, that also meant I’d be running around town giving speeches to various community groups about Social Security and conducting retirement seminars with local employers.

To set the scene for this story, I must tell you two things. First: We had moved to San Diego from gritty old Baltimore. And prior to that, we had lived and worked in many cold and wintry northern cities. So, moving to Southern California, where every day would be sunny and 72 degrees, was like a dream come true. And second, at the time, my mother was in failing health and I was planning a holiday season trip back to her home in Wisconsin.

Before I took the trip, I thought it would be a good idea to make a little video for my mom to give her a taste of life in San Diego. I knew she would never be physically able to come visit. So, I rented a video camera. It was a big, bulky piece of equipment. (This was before cellphones became cameras and video recorders.) I took some shots of our family and home life. But I also went all around San Diego making little video clips.

One morning, I had gone to the Social Security office in Pacific Beach, a coastal San Diego neighborhood, to give a training class to the office employees. After that, I had a lunchtime speech scheduled at a Rotary Club in downtown San Diego. After I finished the training class, I had some time to kill before I had to leave for the speech.

Knowing I’d have this extra time, I had brought along the camera. So, off I went to the Pacific Beach boardwalk, which was just a couple blocks from the Social Security office. And there I stood on a bluff overlooking the ocean, taking panoramic shots of everything there was to see. I knew my mom would be impressed.

I was slowly walking backward, and I was panning from one side of the coast to the other.

And I was doing a running commentary on all the sights we were looking at.

Then I panned along the boardwalk to show all the people who were out on such a pretty day. (I still wasn’t used to the fact that hundreds of

bikini. I’m sure she had a good chuckle, and maybe a “That serves you right, you big, dumb jerk” grin on her face as she passed by my mangled body. Instead, my savior was a nice 70-ish-year-old woman who helped me to the bench I had just fallen over.

She had some water and used a hankie from her purse to help clean me up. As I slowly regained my senses, I realized there were a lot of contusions and abrasions, but no bones were broken and there really was no pain. But I was a bloody mess. My head wound was not deep, and the bleeding stopped quickly. But I had several bad scrapes on my knees and elbows. My khaki dress slacks and blue shirt were torn and bloodstained!

After maybe 10 minutes of intensive beachside care, I thanked the nice old lady. I just barely had time to get to a nearby drugstore where I bought antiseptic ointment and some bandages. I sat in my car and did an amateurish first aid job on my many cuts and bruises. I knew I didn’t have time to get home and change before my speech. I made it downtown just in time. So, picture a room full of some of San Diego’s top business leaders.

And at the podium, there was a guy who looked like he just survived a bomb blast! Fortunately, I was able to wow them with my Social Security presentation, so they were mostly able to ignore my pitiful appearance!

Oh, by the way: The camera survived the crash, and so did the film it contained. That evening, I gave my wife a preview of my nice travelogue of San Diego scenes that ended with a picturesque overview of the Pacific Ocean and people walking and jogging along a boardwalk. And just as a gorgeous bikini-clad blonde comes into sharp focus, the camera suddenly lurches upward and sideways and then down -- and then the film goes blank!

And my wife, looking at my battle scars, echoed the sentiments of the boardwalk beauty when she said, “That serves you right, you big, dumb jerk!”

people were at the beach in the middle of December!) As I panned the boardwalk, in my lens viewer I suddenly spotted the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She was young. She was blonde. She was perfectly tanned. And she was wearing a rather skimpy bikini. She looked like one of those models from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. And she was running along the boardwalk toward me. I was transfixed. Even though this was supposed to be a travelogue for my 85-year-old mother, I couldn’t keep my camera off the gorgeous goddess! I followed her as she slowly ran toward me, keeping her in perfect focus as she approached. And again, all the while, I am slowly backing up.

And just as she approached me, I tripped. I thought I was on a path with no obstacles, but I had backed right into a small cement bench along the ocean bluff. But to say I “tripped” is to put it very mildly. Actually, I was falling backward, uncontrollably, just as she ran by. As I was falling, I pivoted my body so that I wouldn’t land on my back; I also was trying to protect the expensive camera I had rented. I started to put out my hands to break my fall. But that never happened. What broke my fall was my head! It slammed with a BANG right onto the concrete boardwalk!

For a short while, things were just a blur. I must have blacked out. But I did so for only a few seconds. I remember lifting my head off the concrete and slowly focusing on an odd shape that was blowing gently by me along the boardwalk. It was a bloody red blob of skin, about the size of a quarter, with some hairs sticking out of it. What could that be? I felt the top of my forehead and my hand came back a bloody mess. What was blowing in the breeze beside me was a piece of my scalp!

Fortunately, a Florence Nightingale came to my aid. And it wasn’t the gorgeous blonde in the

Deciphering Senior Housing Options

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you decipher the different types of housing options available to seniors, and recommend some good resources for finding them? I need to find a place for my elderly mother and could use some help.

Dear Overwhelmed: There’s a wide array of housing options available to seniors, but what’s appropriate for your mom will depend on her needs and financial situation.

Here’s a rundown of the different levels of senior housing and some resources to help you choose one.

housekeeping, transportation, social activities and medication management. Many facilities also offer special “memory care units” for residents with dementia.

Costs for assisted living usually run between $3,000 and $6,000 per month depending on location and services needed.

Most residents pay for assisted living from personal funds, while some have long-term care insurance policies. And many state Medicaid programs today also cover some assisted living costs for financially eligible residents.

Board and care homes:

These are a similar, but less expensive option to look into which offers many of the same services as assisted living facilities, but in a much smaller home setting.

Your Area Aging Agency is again a good resource for finding assisted living facilities and board care homes, as is Caring.com.

Nursing homes:

If your mom needs ongoing medical and personal care or has very limited mobility, a nursing home, which provides 24-hour skilled nursing care is the next option. To find a good one, use Medicare’s nursing home compare tool at Medicare.gov/carecompare. This tool will not only help you locate nursing homes in your area, it also provides a 5-star rating system on recent health inspections, staffing, quality of care, and overall rating.

Independent living:

If your mom is in relatively good health and self-sufficient, “independent living communities” are a top option that can offer a sense of community. Typically available to people over age 55, this type of senior housing is usually apartments or town homes that are fully functional. In addition, many communities also offer amenities such as meals served in a common dining area, housekeeping, transportation and a variety of social activities.

To locate this type of housing, contact your Area Agency on Aging (call 800-6771116 to get your local number), or use an ADVERTISING PROOF online search tool like Caring.com. Most of TUES., DEC. Need Help?

If you’re not sure what your mom needs, consider hiring an aging life care expert (AgingLifeCare.org) who can assess your mom and find her appropriate housing for a fee – usually between $300 and $800.

Or you can use a senior care advising service like A Place for Mom (APlaceForMom.com) for free. They get paid from the senior living facilities in their network.

A Sign of the Times

Q: I have an official Department of Transportation metal street sign that was removed from a street in Washington, D.C. It was used during the 1961 John F. Kennedy Presidential inauguration. The sign is white with red and blue lettering and measures approximately 12 by 18 inches. It is in ver y good condition. On the back of the sign is the name of the person who removed this sign and the street it was removed from.

Vernon Kilns of Vernon, Calif., made dinnerware from 1931 to 1958.

A: Your set of dinnerware was made in Vernon, Calif., by Vernon Kilns. They were in business from 1931 to 1958. After World War II, the cost of production rose, and, in part due to the lower prices of imported china from Japan, the pottery could not compete and it resulted in their closing. Metlox Potteries purchased many of the Vernon molds and proceeded to produce some of the Vernon dishes for a short time. The pattern is “Organdie” and was one of Vernon Kilns more popular designs. It was created by Gale Turnbull and was produced from 1937 to 1958. There were variations on the pattern theme, including Tam-O-Shanter, Calico, Homespun, Tweed and Gingham.

Your set would probably be worth $250 to $325.
