While you may think of mink coats when you think of fur, beaver garments are the most important Canadian furs exported. • The most common wild fur species in Canada are beaver, muskrat, marten, squirrel, fox and raccoon.

• Martens are members of the weasel family.

Their furs are marketed as “sable” and vary from yellowish buff to dark brown. Sable furs are considered exquisite and are among the most expensive furs on the market.

• Beaver pelts are used for top hats and cowboy hats. The finest cowboy hats today are still made from beaver.

• Nutria, for example, are semi-aquatic rodents that were imported for the fur industry into Louisiana from South America in the 1930s.

These animals reproduce so rapidly that they can denude vegetation, scar the landscape and cause serious erosion problems. In coastal Louisiana, the marshlands need to be protected from these destructive animals to prevent them from destroying it completely.

Everyone involved in a show is always hopeful that it will get picked up for another season, hence the wording of “season finale” versus “series finale.” After the second-season finale aired, Fox decided not to renew “Human Target” for a third Kevin Dillon season. But hey, at least it got to have two seasons.

in a rare move of a big corporation actually listening to its customers! -- of having two separate websites/ companies for its DVD-mailing service (which was to be Qwikster) versus its streaming service (Netflix). Because customers did not want the hassle of having two separate accounts, movie queues and billing statements if they wanted both mail and streaming DVDs, they voiced their complaints, and Netflix listened. Look for everything at Netflix to remain the same -- at least for the time being.

Syfy confirmed at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con that “Merlin” will return in early Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 2012 for its fourth season. Producers for the hit entrepreneurial reality show have not yet announced an exact airdate for the season premiere of “Shark Tank,” but if past seasons are any indication, expect it sometime between January and March 2012. Don’t Be Afraid to Correct Investment Mistakes

Sometimes it’s important to stick to your convictions despite the emotional urge or outside pressures to change your mind. But other times, you need to be flexible enough to change your mind when presented with a new set of facts.

Never has that been more apparent than in the business headlines in recent weeks. First, the CEO of Netflix decided to reverse his decision to split the company into two parts, after the announcement and its pricing changes caused an uproar from shareholders and customers.

Then the new CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co., Meg Whitman, decided to reverse the company’s multibillion dollar decision to dump HP’s personal computer division -- a decision made under the previous CEO, but one in which she had participated as a board member.

Each of these reversals cost shareholders a huge chunk of money. HP stock is down 36 percent for the year and Netflix lost 75 percent of its market value, not to mention 800,000 customers.

Everyone makes mistakes. But when leaders of companies -- or countries -- make mistakes, the costs can be catastrophic. It takes courage to admit a mistake and reverse course. But that can be a better decision than continuing down the wrong road.

Take Bank of America, for instance. It saw an opportunity to replace lost profits from debit card swipe fees by instituting a monthly $5 charge for using a debit card to access your own money. What a fiasco!

When I asked Warren Buffett, who recently invested $5 billion in B of A preferred stock, what he thought of the move, he lifted his glass of CocaCola and said, “New Coke.” He was referring to the historic marketing mistake of 1985, which caused Coca-Cola Co. to quickly bring back “Classic Coke.”

Sometimes experience is the great teacher.

But it’s important to learn the lesson quickly and reverse course before too much damage is done.

Hopefully, research will prevent those mistakes. Just this week, Chase said that after testing the market, it had decided against imposing a fee for debit card use. Of course, their decision was certainly influence by the negative reaction to B of A’s blunder.

Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be first to venture forth with your brilliant new marketing ideas!

So what does all this mean for your own investment decisions and money-management plans?

Well, first you have the comfort of knowing you’re not alone if you make a big mistake on an investment decision. But at least your mistake won’t make headlines. On the other hand, as embarrassing as CEO mistakes may be, they are cushioned by huge salaries and golden parachutes as they depart.

But your mistakes could cost you your retirement. That’s why it’s so important to do your research, create a sensible plan -- and diversify your investments so you don’t have all your nest eggs in one basket.

The recent volatility in the stock market makes this advice all the more important. It may surprise you to learn that although the Dow Jones industrial average is just about 750 points higher than where it started the year, it has traversed 22,350 points on a closing basis so far this year.

Adding up all those closing moves -- both up and down -- has resulted in tremendous anxiety and a lot of second-guessing of investment decisions.

But if you had determined an appropriate portion of your assets to invest in a diversified stock portfolio, you could have taken comfort in knowing that historically that portfolio would produce positive returns over a 20-year period.

A friend of mine recently misplaced her cell phone. She assumed it would turn up if she were patient. After several weeks with no such luck, she ® stopped in at the Verizon store to get a replacement. That’s when she got slammed with the news

Verizon immediately disabled her number, but would do nothing about the hundreds of dollars in charges incurred up to that moment. She’s responsible for every penny of it, which should be a good lesson for all of us:

The minute you cannot find your phone, report it stolen. When you find it, you can have it reactivated. In the meantime, you might want to take this preventive measure, in the hopes a decent person happens to find your phone:

Fear Tinkling

It’s happening every day in homes all over the world: fear tinkling.

The dog is so submissive and fearful that he piddles in an instant when triggered by something.

What turns on the tinkle? Several things can cause this unwanted behavior, including a loud noise, a visitor reaching out toward the dog, or the dog’s owner pointing and yelling.

By any other name, fear tinkling is called “submissive wetting,” and it is common among shy and fearful dogs. Something frightens the dog, and he wets out of fear. So let’s explore this behavior, see what causes it, and determine how to solve or minimize it.

We will start with the dog’s temperament.

What has caused the dog to be shy and fearful? It could be a number of things: bad breeding, lack of socialization or too much discipline. You may have adopted a dog and don’t know his history. He may have been mistreated. And, of course, it’s important to know that your dog hears five times better than you do, so if you raise your voice or point at him while saying something like, “You bad dog, you,” that will only heighten the fear of your already-frightened dog. And this causes more fear tinkling.

The only way to solve or at least minimize the problem is to build up your dog’s self-confidence.

And the only way to do this is for you to be patient, production kind and loving.1 45 HRS:

Until the late 1970s, iron deficiency anemia was a serious health threat that -- although rarely fatal -- led to fatigue that annually cost the nation billions of dollars in lost productivity in the workplace.

The cause was almost always excessive menstrual blood loss. Because of blood loss and inadequate iron in diets, 30 percent of premenopausal women had too little iron in their bodies; 20 percent had a severe enough deficiency that abnormalities developed in their red blood cells; and 5 percent were severely anemic.

To correct this problem, a national campaign led to the fortification of food with iron. Today, most flours, breads and cereals have added iron, and, as a result, iron deficiency and anemia have become much less common.

Over the same period, millions of Americans began using nutritional supplements, often in very large doses, because of the belief that these supplements improved health, prevented disease and increased energy. Today, more than 50 percent of adults and many children consume numerous supplements on a daily basis. And many take more iron than they need.

It turns out, that our effort to eradicate iron deficiency by adding iron to our diets and taking supplements comes with a cost. Gradually and insidiously, the iron stores of Americans have increased, and this has correlated with a modest but significant increased risk of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Iron is an oxidant, and when present in cells, it contributes to cell damage. This leads to a greater risk of cell abnormalities that can cause cancer and impairment in the immune system that helps fight disease.

A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine provides more evidence that too much iron is too much of a good thing. Researchers followed thousands of women, with an average age in 1986 of 61, who participated in the Iowa Women’s Health Study. Every woman completed a large questionnaire at frequent intervals from 1986

Columnist Is Right -Parents Are Not ‘Mooching’ Social Security Q:

In a recent column, you categorically stated that people cannot bring their foreign-born parents to this countr y and then put them on their Social Security account. You said the only way that could happen is if someone died. In other words, you claim that benefits to parents can be paid only after the death of one of that parent’s grown children.

But I know for a fact that this is untrue.

My ex-husband brought his parents to this countr y in the 1980s and immediately put them on his Social Security. And they got those Social Security benefits for the rest of their lives. How could you print such a big lie?

A:

I didn’t lie. The problem is that you are confusing one government program with another one. However, you are not alone in that confusion. I got emails from dozens of readers challenging me on my facts or accusing me of lying. And every one of those readers made the same mistake you are making. I’ll explain in a minute, but first I will review the facts.

In that prior column, I took on a ubiquitous rumor that Social Security is going broke because retirees are bringing their elderly parents to the U.S. from foreign countries and then putting those parents on their Social Security account. People claimed that these parents were “mooching” undeserved benefits off the system -- benefits financed by overburdened American taxpayers.

I correctly pointed out in that column that the only way a parent could claim benefits off an adult child’s Social Security record is if the adult child died. And then benefits could be paid only if the adult son or daughter was supporting his or her

such as Treasury bills, CDs or money-market funds, you would have had more comfort in sticking with your stock market investments.

What happens if you make a mistake? What if you sold out on one of those fearful down days?

Antique Mugs and Brush Stir up a Lather Q:

This shaving mug has been in our family since the early 1950s. It is marked on the bottom with the word and number “Germany -- 99.” The multi-colored flowers are in relief against a heavily embellished gold background.

We also still have the shaving brush that came with it. The mug was given to my dad, who was a painter and paperhanger, by the owners of a home he was working in.

Any information you can provide on the histor y of our mug will be appreciated.

The bears were marketed during Ted Kennedy’s unsuccessful, 1980 campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, when he ran against Jimmy Carter. In the past few years, their value has skyrocketed and then plummeted. At one point, the value was in the upper hundreds. Currently, they are available on the Internet for $75 to $100.
