Anyway, I cut the egg carton into shapes to fit around the divider and managed to fill the entire bottom of that drawer with a series of small compartments.

Face to Face With the Junk Drawer I’m going to go on a limb and assume Everyday that you have a junk drawer. We all have one, CHEAPSKATE and I don’t know about you, but I’m not about to

After all, where else would we put our junk? ®

Recently, a reader wrote asking how to conquer his junk drawer problem. “I can’t find anything in there so a lot of the time I just re-buy stuff I'm sure I already had but I couldn't find it when I needed it! Do you ever cover things like this in your column?" he asked.

Having never thought much about junk drawers, I decided to see what the experts have to say. Emilie Barnes, co-author of “More Hours in My Day,” says the secret to junk drawer organization is proper dividing containers. But wait!

Don’t run out to the mall to buy all kinds of pricey dividing containers. Barnes says you already have what you need: muffin tins, a silverware tray, an ice cube tray, a coffee can, a small box and even (hold on!) egg cartons. I stopped short on the egg cartons. Seemed a little gross to me.

Next I checked with Marla Cilley (aka “The FlyLady” and author of the book “Sink Reflections”). Cilley says you cannot organize clutter. The only way, she says, to get control of any space is to empty it and clean it and then put things back, each thing in its own place.

Knowing I couldn’t advise my reader if I’d not experienced this myself, I knew I had to take the plunge and just do it. I spread out some newspaper on my kitchen table and dumped that sucker out. Wow, was I shocked to see the drawer was lined with lovely paper. Believe me, it’s been many years since I’ve seen the bottom of that big drawer.

And now for the challenge of facing that pile on the table. First I pulled out several electric extension cords, wound and secured them with twistie-ties. Then I began to segregate: screws in one pile, nails in another. I found pliers, screwdrivers of every kind, several dead flashlight batteries, a tape measure, a small tack hammer, electricians tape, a long-lost magnifying glass, pencils, pens and small tools that fit neatly into the long, narrow compartments. Tacks, washers and small, round things were perfect in the egg compartments. I kept putting like things together into the remaining compartments until all that remained was genuine junk that was now destined for the trashcan.

You wouldn’t believe all the neat stuff I found ... stuff I really, truly need and, just like my reader-friend. Items I’d re-purchased because I forgot I had them already. Well, no more!

It took the better part of two hours to wrestle back control of my junk drawer. Thanks to Emilie and Marla, now it is so useful and so organized I’ve decided to rename it. I don’t have ADVERTISING a junk drawer anymore. I havePROOF a brand-new Help Final Changes DUE: 5:00 p.m..

She was a regular on “Saturday Night Live” from 1996 to 2002, and then played helicopter mom Sheila Ana Gasteyer Shay on the sitcom “Suburgatory.” She followed that role with a federal judge on “The Good Wife” and returned to comedy as a drama teacher on “The Goldbergs.”

“American Auto” is another workplace comedy created by Justin Spitzer, the same person who created the successful NBC comedy “Superstore.”

The commercials for the new series keeping touting it as the next “The Office.” Perhaps they can safely make that assumption because Spitzer was a writer and producer on that acclaimed series earlier in his career.

As for Hahn, the character of the delightfully devious Agatha was so well received on “WandaVision” that Disney+ is creating a spin-off series for her character titled “House of Harkness.” *** Q: When is “Outlander” coming back?

Three calls in three days, each the same: two parents, their offspring and one growling, biting dog. The difference is only in the details.

One family is dealing with a Rottweiler that growls when they pet him on the head. One is confronted with a Beagle that “goes for the kids’ throats.” And one is relatively content with the fact that their dog is “just a growler.”

But “just a growler,” left to his own devices, could easily become a biter. And the big problem here is that children are involved.

One of the things I do with my free time is go to schools and educate children on how to handle dogs. Kids are kids, and dogs are dogs, and neither is educated on the other unless someone knowledgeable steps in to bridge the gap. This is largely the job of the parents, but parents unfortunately don’t always know what they’re doing when they combine child and canine under one roof.

Children want to hug dogs, to wrap their pudgy arms around their furry necks and squeeze in a display of affection. They’ll toddle right on up to a dog and greet him head-on, literally face to face. They yank on ears, tug on tails, try to crawl on their back for a “pony” ride. They shriek and flail their arms around a dog, even hit a dog, not knowing any better.

Some parents, on the other hand, are under the misguided impression that dogs should be able to tolerate anything. And so they allow their children to engage in what is, by my lights, animal abuse.

I start my “class” by giving the kids a general introduction to the dog, the dog’s anatomy and the unique features of this very special companion animal. I talk about the dog’s phenomenal sense of scent, and how they use that first and foremost to learn about the world. I discuss the dog’s sense of hearing, and how they hear five times to 10 times better than we do, making them especially sensitive to loud music and voices -- including yelling the

Lapses in Service and Advice at the SSA Today I’m going to write, once again, about lapses in service and advice from the Social Security Administration. I cringe every time I write one of these kinds of columns. When I worked for the SSA between 1973 and 2005, I was often so proud of my agency. We were always winning awards for public service and program efficiency from the overseers and watchdogs who monitor government programs and services. I’ve shared this line before from a former colleague -- who ended up becoming the SSA’s Historian. He said that the Social Security Administration was “an honorable institution engaged in a noble public service.”

But oh, so sadly, times have changed. Every single day, I get emails from readers either complaining about the poor service they received from the SSA -- or even worse, about bad advice or incorrect information they got from an SSA representative.

Complaints about poor service can be partly explained away by COVID-19. Dealing with the virus, and having so many agency employees working from home, has obviously put a huge strain on the agency’s ability to deliver services.

Social Security offices around the country remain essentially closed, with only a skeletal, and mostly managerial, crew on duty. The SSA says it can only handle the most critical issues via an in-person appointment in a local Social Security office. Everyone else is encouraged to take care of their Social Security business either online at www.socialsecurity.gov or via phone by calling 800-772-1213.

This circumstance obviously puts a strain on these service delivery systems. But still, we should not have situations such as this one I heard from a reader recently. She said: “I am receiving SSA benefits and my husband’s SSA benefits application is in the pipeline.

Since COVID, SSA is not taking in person appointments. I have had three occasions where questions I have had could not be answered by the frontline representative at the 800 call in number. They set up a time for someone to call me back. Each time, I received a text and written letter telling exactly when a representative would call back. On all 3 occasions, no one called at the appointed time or anytime thereafter. Each time, I called the 800 number to find out why and no one could give me an answer. I imagine I’m not the only one this has happened to. Can you look into this?”

I feel so helpless when I get emails like this because there really is nothing I can do. I frequently will suggest the person call the local Social Security office and demand to speak to the manager.

If that person is as service-oriented as I was when I worked for the agency, he or she should help the person cut through the red tape. As I recall, that’s what happened in this person’s case. (Sadly, I get so many of these complaints that I can’t remember the outcome of each one.)

As I said, service delivery issues can be partly explained away because of COVID. But if you reach an SSA rep and then get wrong information or knuckleheaded advice -- well, there is just no excuse for that. Here is an example.

started getting Social Security benefits. He has a a January application date made sense. How to Recognize a MiniStroke and What to Do DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: Can you tell me how a person can know if they’ve experienced a minor stroke? My 79-year-old mother had a sudden spell a few weeks ago when she suddenly felt dizzy for no apparent reason and had trouble walking and speaking. However, she was perfectly fine later that same day, and it apparently had gone away.

She seems fine now, but I'm wondering if this was the sign of a minor stroke. What do you know about these things? -- Concerned Son Dear Concerned: The way you’re describing it, it’s very possible that your mom had a “mini-stroke” also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), and if she hasn’t already done so she needs to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Each year, around 250,000 Americans have a mini-stroke, but less than half of them realize what’s happening. That’s because the symptoms are usually fleeting – lasting only a few minutes, up to an hour or two – causing most people to ignore them or brush them off as no big deal. But anyone who has had a ministroke is much more likely to have a full-blown stroke, which can cause long-term or permanent paralysis, impaired memory, loss of speech or vision, and even death.

A mini-stroke is caused by a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain and can be a warning sign that a major stroke may soon be coming. This is why mini-strokes need to be treated as emergencies.

r y pin that my mother gave me around 1955.

It is 3 inches long and is marked “Trifari.” I also have the matching clip-on earrings. The stones are emerald, peridot and clear rhinestone. They are set in gold tone metal and in mint condition.

Is my set collectible, and what can you tell me about it?

A: Glittery costume jewelry from the early

to mid 1900s is indeed collectible. Gustavo Trifari and his uncle founded Trifari in 1910. The Great Depression adversely impacted the company’s modest success.

In 1930, Alfred Philippe was hired as the head designer and his creative designs jump-started the company. Philippe had been a designer with Cartier and also Van Cleef and Arples. His early pieces were inspired by the Art Deco period. He later created large floral pieces that became known as the “fruit salad” line.

Trifari used a variety of marks and yours is circa 1955. In 1975, Liz Claiborne acquired Trifari and sells its jewelry today.

Similar sets are selling in the range of $75 to $125. Some Trifari pieces can go much higher.

In an attempt to keep the lead arm rigid, excessive tension in the hands and shoulders usually results.
