The email contained a single-word subject: “Help!” The sender, I’ll call her “Emily,” had been asked by her community group leader ® to give a 15-minute presentation on how to achieve financial freedom. She was honored by asked, Mary Hunt to have been excited to do it, but also panicked by the thought. She asked if I would help.

My first thought was that I can’t even introduce myself in 15 minutes. How could I, Emily or anyone else tackle that subject in just 15 minutes? But then I got to thinking: If money management is, as I believe, not that difficult, why couldn’t she do it? Why couldn’t I do it?

I decided to give it a try:

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

That’s why you’ll never see a gator stick out its tongue.

SAVE

Do not confuse saving money with spending less, as in “I save money when I buy things on sale.” You are not saving at all; you are spending less. Saving money means that you actually put money into a safe place for some future time. Do that. Starting right now and forevermore, make it a rule that you will put some amount of your paycheck into a savings account before you spend any of it.

ANTICIPATE

Not all of your expenses occur on a monthly basis. Figure out a way to put aside a little bit each month to handle those expenses that are irregular, intermittent and even unexpected. It will do wonderful things for your peace of mind when you don't have to panic when they come due.

CASH

It’s proven that you will spend about 30 percent more if you depend on plastic to pay for day-to-day purchases, even if that plastic is a debit card! Leave the plastic at home. Live off cash as much as possible. Inconvenient? Yes. That’s the point.

PLAN

Society wants you to believe that living spontaneously brings freedom. Just the opposite is true. You need to have a spending plan (a way that you pre-spend your paycheck on paper, which some call a budget) so that you know ahead of time where the money will go. Write it down, and then stick to it. Take control of every dollar so you are telling it where to go, and then pay attention to make sure it does as told.

GIVE

Give away the same amount that you save. Just give it away -- no strings attached -as an act of gratitude for what you have and how you are blessed. Goal: Give away 10 percent of all you receive.

Denial: More than a River in Egypt

The word “acceptance” gets a bad rap.

Acceptance is not resignation. It’s not defeatist or complacent. Acceptance is powerful and progressive -- a symbol that marks that point in time when a person seizes control of their life.

Acceptance is the antidote to denial.

Denial fuels paralysis. It destroys relationships, drains bank accounts, limits potential, inhibits progress, wreaks havoc on our health and leaves questionable politicians in power for far too long. And it’s certainly no way to deal with a dog.

An acquaintance of mine is having trouble with his neighbors -- that is, if you ask him. If you ask them, however, they’re having trouble with his dogs.

I asked him what the problem was, and he said, “My neighbors say my dogs bark when I’m not home, but I don’t think they do.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I recorded them while I was out.”

Not “but I know they don’t because I pretended to leave and then caught the neighbor red-handed provoking my dogs.”

Nope. For him it was enough to simply deny the possibility outright and assume his neighbors are lying. The irony is that he is an elementaryschool teacher. No one is more familiar with the frustrations of denial than a teacher of young children.

“Thank you for coming in, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Your son hid a dead squirrel in my desk drawer today.”

“Oh, but our Jason would never do that. He loves all God’s creatures.”

Barking is a behavioral problem that frequently gets blown all out of proportion because of denial. Yes, barking is communication, it’s natural, it’s protection. But it’s also annoying and disruptive when excessive.

Barking isn’t the problem. Excessive barking is the problem. And if your dog is accused, the first step should be determining whether he is an excessive barker. If so, there are a multitude of options available to help manage or cure the Casey's Corner: Turn to page 10

Senior Citizens Who Never Signed Up for Social Security Q:

I am 73 years old. I never signed up for Social Security, because I just never needed it. I am fortunate enough to be independently wealthy. I inherited a multimilliondollar business from my father, who had inherited it from his father. We have way more than enough money to live comfortably for the rest of our lives, and to provide nest eggs for our children and grandchildren. So again, I just don’t need the money.

However, my wife keeps encouraging me to file for my Social Security. But my thinking is that since we don’t need the money, I should let it stay in the Social Security funds and it can be of more use for other less fortunate Social Security recipients. I’d like your take on this.

A:

That certainly is noble thinking on your part. But honestly, it’s just a little misguided.

Your monthly Social Security benefit would be about $3,000 per month. That’s a lot of money. But it’s dwarfed by the magnitude of the trillion-dollar Social Security trust funds. Your benefits are such a teeny tiny drop in the Social Security bucket that letting your money remain in those funds really has no effect and does nothing “for other less fortunate Social Security recipients.”

Throughout my 40-plus years of working on Social Security issues, I’ve run into about a half-dozen other folks in your situation. And I’ll recommend to you the same thing I recommended to them.

Sign up for your Social Security benefits, and once the checks start rolling in, do something creative with the money.

Maybe send a monthly check to your favorite charity. Or perhaps you could put a large chunk of money in your church’s collection plate once a month. I know of one guy who takes his Social Security check each month and buys a saving bond and gives it to one of his many grandkids.

Or do what another fortunate soul like you is doing. He wrote to me about 10 years ago with a similar story, and I suggested the same advice.

Ever since, he’s used the money to fund a scholarship that he hands out to lucky high school seniors in his town.

Or of course you could just keep the money yourself and do whatever millionaires do with a $3,000 per month bit of throw-away pocket change!

Q:

My dad is 85 years old. He never signed up for Social Security. He worked for the VA and gets a government pension and he also gets free medical care from the VA. So he doesn’t need Medicare. Before and after his VA career, he worked at jobs covered by Social Security, so he has his 40 quarters.

He says he doesn’t need Social Security. But I think he should sign up. Is it too late for him to apply? If it isn’t, can he get retroactive benefits? And what about Medicare?

curity. So your dad can, and he definitely should, certainly can still do so now.

Assuming she is eligible for those bensign up for benefits as soon as possible. Based on efits, she will be able to claim six months’ worth what you said about his working career, he won’t be due much from Social Security. My guess is maybe of retroactive benefits. And normally, that six-month check would thousands of dollars. And every month he waits, he’s throwing more money away. The most he can be all she gets. But if she can show that the Social Security Administration made a mistake by not get in retroactive benefits is six month’s worth.

Dear Nervous: It’s an unfortunate reality, but most single women – whether they’re divorced, widowed or never married – face much greater financial challenges in retirement than men. Why is this? Because women typically earn less money – about 80 cents for every dollar that men make, on average, and they have shorter working careers than men due to raising children and/or caring for aging parents. And less money earned usually translates into less money saved and a lower Social Security benefit upon retirement.

In addition, women live an average of five years longer than men, which requires their retirement income to have to stretch farther for living expenses and healthcare costs. Thomas was a struggling comedian trying to break into show business when he attended Mass at a Detroit church. He put the last of his funds – $7.00 – into the offering plate and, now at the very end of his finances, prayed for God to provide for his family, including his soonto-be-born first child. In his prayer request, Thomas pleaded, “Lord, show me my way in life and I will build you a shrine.” The answer came a week later with a surprise booking engagement that launched his career to become a famous entertainment personality.

• Honoring his promise, Danny Thomas founded St. Jude’s in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962. The hospital specializes in treating children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other serious illnesses. When St. Jude’s opened its doors, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer was less than 20%. Today, that survival rate has reached 80% for several types of pediatric cancer. Unlike other hospitals, the majority of funding for St. Jude comes from generous donors. In fact, approximately 75 percent of the funds necessary to sustain and grow St. Jude must be raised every year. Although the cost of keeping the facility running is extremely high, there is still no cost to patients.

• In 1902, businessman Kaspare Cohn donated a two-story Victorian home in Los Angeles to the Hebrew Benevolent Society to create a 12bed hospital for the Jewish community. It was simply known as the Kaspare Cohn Hospital, and its services were free. Los Angeles’ first female doctor, Dr. Sarah Vasen, acted as superintendent for four years. By 1910, the facility had moved and increased to a 50-bed hospital, followed by another upgrade in 1930 and a name change to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.

• Another Jewish hospital, Bikur Cholim, established in 1921, merged with Cedars in 1961 to become Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

In 1972, a new facility was constructed, using a $4 million contribution from cosmetic giant Max Factor’s Family Foundation.

• Cedars-Sinai is well known for its services to the stars. Several famous folks have passed away within its walls, including Gilda Radner, Lucille Ball, Charles Bronson, Johnny Carson, Natalie Cole, and Debbie Reynolds. The famous hospital today employs more than 2,000 physicians. 
