For the Love of Dog, Be the Pig

The best places to shop are those with the most lenient return policies. Nothing sets the alarm bells off like an “all sales are final” sign. “Store credit or exchange only” isn’t much better. But full permission to return a lamp that deeply offends my wife’s sensibilities means full discretion for me to take it home and give it a whirl.

A dog is another story. A dog is not a lamp.

If you’re going to get a dog, it should be for keeps.

There’s a saying that the difference between involved and committed is like a ham and eggs breakfast: The chicken was involved; the pig was committed.

If you’re going to get a dog, be the pig.

Recently, a man called me for advice about a problem that’s not uncommon. The dog is causing a rift in my marriage, he said.

He and his wife can’t have kids. She wanted a dog to fill that void. He went down to the local shelter and brought home a dog that looked a lot like their last dog. It didn’t take long for the couple to realize the similarities did not extend beyond the looks department.

The dog is phobic, unruly, unsocialized, fearful and completely without training. The husband now contends that they bit off more than they can chew with this beast. The wife’s response?

You don’t understand the power of love.

Neither is quite right.

Love is powerful, but it’s not an education.

Its warm rays won’t radiate the ABC’s into your child’s brain. Nor will they weave a heart-shaped glossary of human terms like “sit,” “stay,” “heel,” “down” and “come” into your dog’s limited vocabulary.

But how do you know that you’ve taken on more than you can handle if you haven’t made even the most basic attempt at gaining control of a situation?

Yes, this tale got off on the wrong foot.

There is no logic to bringing an unknown dog into your home to stay just because he looks like your former dog’s doppelganger. It makes as much sense as buying a used car over the phone.

Could Coffee Help Us Live Longer?

Do coffee drinkers live longer? A new study looked at data to determine whether consuming coffee lowered the risk of premature death.

This was by no means a small, shortterm, low-budget study. The data was collected for over a decade on a huge sample of more than a half-million people who were part of the U.K. Biobank study. Researchers looked beyond their patterns coffee consumption by studying all manner of their subjects' health information and daily living. This included their health history, smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise.

The extensive study also included numerous medical exams and tests. Teams of researchers then looked scientifically at all their information to determine whether there appears to be a correlation between coffee drinkers and longevity.

Here’s what they found:

• Risk reduction rose depending on the amount of coffee consumed. One cup a day gave an 8 percent lower risk of early death, compared to those who did not drink coffee. That rose to a 16 percent lower risk for those heavy coffee drinkers consuming six or seven cups per day.

At eight cups or more per day, however, the rate dropped back to 14 percent.

Is Social Security a Welfare Program?

Q:

Recently, I was listening to a radio program in which the host described Social Security as a welfare program. He said millions of people are getting benefits they never paid for and don’t deser ve. I’d like to get your opinion on this. Is Social Security welfare?

Ann began working at age 21 and retired at age 62 and started collecting Social Security retirement benefits. So she paid into Social Security for 41 years. I take it this is what you call “real” Social Security, so she deserves her benefits.

Frank also started working at age 21. But sadly, at age 59, he had severe heart problems and was forced to stop working. He applied for and started getting disability benefits when he was 60.

He worked and paid Social Security taxes for 38 years. And yet you claim he is a freeloader who should be kicked off the system. Other than the fact that Ann worked until she retired and Frank was forced to stop working a few years prior to retirement, how are their cases different? What makes Ann’s benefits “real” and Frank’s benefits “welfare”?

Here is a third example. Sam, like Frank and Ann, started working at age 21. He retired at age 66 and started getting Social Security. He died at age 80 and his widow, Sylvia, started getting an additional $200 per month in widow’s benefits added to her own retirement benefit. So you are saying that even though Sam worked and paid Social Security taxes for 45 years, the $200 per month that Sylvia now gets in widow’s benefits is “welfare.” I simply don’t follow your logic.

Finally, let’s look at Barbara’s Social Security situation. She also started working at age 21.

Tragically, she was killed in a car accident when she was 50 years old. Her two minor children started getting survivor benefits on her account.

Barbara paid Social Security taxes for 29 years.

How can you call the survivor benefits her children get “welfare”?

I’m sure these are some of the people the radio host was referring to when he said, “Millions of people are getting benefits they never paid for and don’t deserve.” While it is true that the children, and possibly the wife, of the deceased father I mentioned in the prior paragraph didn’t pay for the survivor benefits they are receiving, the father certainly did. And only the most miserly and narrowminded of government critics would say his widow and children don’t deserve the Social Security benefits they are receiving.

There are also millions of elderly women who receive wife’s or widow’s benefits on a husband’s Social Security account. Some of these women may never have worked outside the home and paid Social Security taxes. But once again, their husbands surely did. So are these women getting “welfare”? Well, in the broadest sense of that term, yes, they are. But in the narrow sense that they are getting something for nothing, they certainly are not getting welfare.

I think a major reason many people think of Social Security benefits as “welfare” is because of confusion with the SSI program. Supplemental Security Income is indeed a welfare program that pays a small monthly stipend to the elderly poor and to poor people with disabilities. That program is managed by the Social Security Administration, but SSI payments are funded out of general tax revenues, not Social Security taxes. Still, most Americans don’t understand the distinction and they incorrectly think that SSI is just another Social Security welfare benefit.

Well, I guess it all depends on how you define “welfare.” If you mean it in the narrow sense of someone getting free government benefits that they may never have paid for, then that certainly is not what Social Security is. But if you define “welfare” in broader terms as a government program designed to provide for the general good of its citizens, then I would definitely put Social Security in that category.

After all, the word “social” in Social Security is there not just because it is alliterative and sounds good. From its very beginning in 1935, social goals were built into the program. For example, the Social Security benefit formula has always been skewed so that low-income workers get a better deal out of the program than their more highly paid counterparts. And that doesn’t mean higher benefits. A well-to-do person will always get much more in retirement benefits than a poorer retiree. But as a percentage of what they kicked into the system, the low-income person gets a more generous rate of return.

ANSWER: Foot drop is most commonly caused by damage to the peroneal nerve, which wraps around the fibula, one of the two bones of the leg (anatomically, only the lower leg is called the leg, as opposed to the thigh). The nerve can be damaged from trauma, such as during surgery or prolonged hospitalization. Leg casts and prolonged positioning with stress on the nerve, such as squatting, also can damage the nerve.

Most people describe numbness but not pain, and the dropped foot can cause people to trip, so people with this condition learn to flex the hip to lift the thigh up higher. The diagnosis can be confirmed by electrical studies of the nerves.

I have enclosed a picture of an “Amos ‘n’ Andy” windup metal toy car. I think it was made around 1930 by Louis Marx Toy Company. It measures over 7 inches long, 5 inches high and 4 inches wide and is in excellent working condition. The words “Fresh Air Taxicab of America Incorporated” are on the hood. I don’t have the original box.

Charles Meigh joined his father’s pottery located in Staffordshire, England, in 1834.

From 1850 to 1851, the firm used the name Charles Meigh, Son & Pankhurst. From 1851 to 1861, the name was Charles Meigh and Sons. “California” is the name of the transferware print design, and it was made around 1850. The pottery produced ironstone transferware, flow blue ware, mulberry ware and salt-glazed teapots. The pottery closed in 1861.

On the show “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” syndicated radio actors Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll portrayed two black men, Amos and Andy, who came to the city from the South. By the 1950s, people began to speak out about the racial stereotyping.

Louis Marx founded his toy company in New York in 1919. He had factories in Erie and Gerard, Pennsylvania, and Glen Dale, West Virginia.

His sheet metal pressed lithograph toys were extremely popular with children, especially during the Great Depression.

Marx Toy Company reached its peak in the 1950s. Marx appeared on the cover of Time magazine and was touted as the Toy King. In 1972, Marx sold his company at the age of 76. The new owners did not have his marketing skills and business acumen, and the company went into a decline. It was closed in 1980.

Simple Basic One of the common basics that any top level golfer learns early in their development is a consistency of how the club is aligned to themselves. The grip end of the golf club should be pointed somewhere between the zipper line and the crease (or middle) of the left leg. This zone is quite small, but it does allow for a little variance among players.

Poor set up positions usually favor the grip end pointing too centered, although it may be just as destructive to have the grip end pointing well left of the body. By keeping the clubface square to the target line and the grip end in its zone, you’ll gain more consistency with clubface control throughout your set of clubs. Interestingly, the clubshaft may appear to lean differently with irons and woods due to ball position changes. This will be normal from the golfer’s point of view.
