Pizza (from page one) were visiting Naples, and Esposito was asked to prepare an authentic Italian meal for them.

Esposito created a special pizza “pie” meant to imitate the colors of the Italian flag: white mozzarella cheese, red tomato sauce, and green basil. It’s thought to have been the first time mozzarella was used on a pizza. The King and Queen had never tasted pizza before, and were so impressed by the meal that they raved about it. Esposito capitalized on their praise to promote his business, and the pizza pie fast became a popular dining sensation.

• Pizza was introduced in America as Italians emigrated to America in the late 1800s and brought their traditional recipes with them,

introduced to pizza while stationed in Italy, and brought their passion for pizza home to the U.S. Today pizza is a $30 billion industry in the United States.

A traditional funeral costs about $6,000, although extras like flowers, obituary notices, acknowledgment cards and limousines can easily bring the total to well over $10,000.

Families often lavishly overspend on a funeral or burial because they think of it as a reflection of their feelings for the deceased.

DEAR MARY: My comment is in response to a letter on the Everyday Cheapskate website from Bonita in South Dakota titled “Where to Keep Money for Mom?” She was looking for input on how to invest $10,000 for her 62-year-old mother who has no savings or life insurance and lives on disability.

I would recommend they go to any funeral home and speak with the person there who handles prepaid funerals. Essentially, you are purchasing an insurance policy to cover the funeral costs. We did this for my dad before he moved into a long-term care facility, which was going to drain his remaining assets to zero dollars. A prepaid funeral policy is excluded from the asset base and is protected once the assets are gone and a person goes on medical assistance.

With all the other drama that comes with aging parents, it is nice for my sister and me to know that the end is covered and won’t create still another drain/strain on everything.

Dear Molly: Thanks for this wise advice. In fact, many elder law attorneys advise prepayment as a way to invest in assets that will not be countable by Medicaid or SSI. You read it in tidbits!

However, I want my dear readers to know

that there are pitfalls on the road to prepaid endof-life arrangements, which they need to know about in order to avoid falling into them. Buyers beware.

Following are some questions the FTC recommends asking before signing up for a pre-need funeral arrangement. The questions are from the FTC booklet "Shopping for Funeral Services:

• What happens to the money you’ve prepaid? States have different requirements for handling those funds.

• Who will get the interest income on money that is prepaid and then put into a trust account?

• How will you be protected if the funeral provider or the insurance underwriter it uses goes out of business for some reason?

• Can you cancel the contract and get a full refund if you change our minds?

• What happens if you move to a different area or die while away from home?

• Can your prepaid funeral plans be transferred, and if so, what is the additional cost?

Sometimes it’s more convenient and less stressful to price-shop funeral homes by telephone. The Funeral Rule requires funeral directors to provide price information over the phone to any caller who asks for it.

If you run into problems or have questions about your state laws, most states have a licensing board that regulates the funeral industry.

Fire-Proof Your Pets

California is famous for more than its Hollywood roots and sun-drenched beaches. It’s famous for its fires. Monstrous, majestic, devastating -- California wildfires are often unfathomable feats of nature, at times triggered by inglorious acts of man.

But then there are the accidents waiting to happen, as was the case with the “Pack Rat” house fire in Riverside, Calif.

Riverside firefighters were first called to the home just after 6 p.m. on Oct. 6. They found the kitchen engulfed in flames, along with a back porch area that had been turned into a kennel. Fourteen Lhasa Apsos died, presumably of smoke inhalation.

Later that night, fire crews were called back to the home as the flames rekindled. The remains of 11 more dogs were discovered after the second fire.

Firefighters told KTLA they had “access problems in every room due to the ‘extreme clutter’ inside the house.” All but the living room was full, ceiling-to-floor, wall-to-wall, with collected items.

The kennel conditions matched those of the house, with dogs stacked in cages, one on top of the next.

The jaw-dropping circumstances that led to this fire and its many casualties indicate a lack of mental health on the part of the owner. But kennel fires happen even with the most stable at the helm.

In Excelsior Springs, Kansas, firefighters and a kennel owner snatched 16 dogs from a dire fate as flames engulfed the boarding facility and a neighboring business. In the words of kennel owner Barbara Baldridge, “If we would have been any later, there probably would not have been any dogs left.”

Fires, of course, can ignite anywhere. In Lubbock, Texas, a 2-year-old Labrador named Duke was rescued by firefighters when his normally quiet home went up in flames. The family had been grilling the night before, and winds fanning a wayward ember is thought to be the cause of the resulting inferno.

In each of these fires, the dogs involved were home alone, with no way out.

The ‘Ex’ Factor and Social Security Q:

My ex-wife was getting divorced spouse benefits on my account. She recently died. How do I go about getting her benefits added back into my account?

A:

There is nothing to add back to your account. Social Security benefits paid to divorced spouses, and for that matter, benefits paid to any dependent spouse or child, are merely add-on benefits. They don’t take a nickel away from anything the primary account holder is due. So now that she has died, her checks merely stop. No other adjustments to your Social Security record are necessary.

Q:

My ex-wife (we were married for 27 years) is tr ying to get benefits on my account. She isn’t a nice person and she was ver y antagonistic and mean-spirited to me throughout the divorce process. I don’t want her to get any of my Social Security. So how do I stop her from doing this?

A:

Assuming she meets all the eligibility requirements, you can’t stop her from getting benefits on your record. To qualify for those benefits, she would have to be at least 62, not due higher benefits on her own record, and unmarried. So maybe you want to introduce her to a handsome retiree and hope he sweeps her off her feet and leads her down the aisle. Otherwise, she’ll be getting Social Security checks on your record. But as I pointed out in the prior answer, whatever she gets doesn’t take anything away from you or your Social Security account. So don’t lose too much sleep over this.

Q:

My first wife and I were married for more than 30 years before divorcing five years ago. I have remarried. She hasn’t. We remain good friends, and I would like to do anything I can to make sure she gets spousal benefits from my Social Security. Do I need to sign any papers granting her permission? By the way, I am already getting my Social Security. My ex is about to turn 62 and is ready to file.

A:

People sure are curious creatures, aren’t they? The guy who wrote the prior question was trying to do everything in his power to keep his ex from getting any of his Social Security. And here you are -- bending over backwards to help your former spouse. That’s nice.

But you don’t have to do any bending.

There is nothing you need to do and no papers you need to sign. Your ex merely needs call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 to get the ball rolling. Assuming she isn’t due higher benefits on her own record, she will get an amount equal to about one-third of your full Social Security benefit.

There is an older guy living on our block who doesn’t get along with anyone in the neighborhood. I’d guess he’s in his 70s, and he’s living with a younger woman. Neighbor-

hood gossip says that he is getting Social Security and that this 40-something girlfriend of his is also getting benefits. Know the ABCDE’s of Melanoma

DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months.

At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, “the ball game is over.” Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly.

-- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years.

Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it’s so important to know the ABCDE’s of melanoma recognition:

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is 40 years old. After a recent stress test, he ended up with five stents in his arteries, and also was diagnosed with diabetes. His doctor ordered him not to go back to work for three or four weeks, but he went back after three days.

ANSWER: We don’t normally have people stay home for long periods of time after placement of stents, so I was surprised to hear that he was “ordered” (I almost never “order,” only recommend, more or less strongly) to stay home.

My experience is that after receiving lifechanging diagnoses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, it’s best to keep some habits, such as work, the same and change others.

For your son, I am sure he will be recommended a proper diet for diabetes and exercise appropriate for a person with a new diagnosis of heart disease.

The Suicide Report

The newly released National Suicide Data Report shows that the number of veterans who commit suicide is unchanged.

The report covers the years 2005 to 2015, which is a big concern. That time period ended three years ago. What is going on right now?

The report is full of data manipulated in various ways, with subpopulations, unadjusted rates, age-adjusted rates, by race, by branch of service, by era ... and more. It’s loaded with charts with rates versus percentage versus real numbers.

The number of veterans has gone down, by 15.2 percent. The percentage of veterans using Department of Veterans Affairs health care has gone up. Suicides went down among the group using VA health care. The biggest rate of increase category is female veterans who did not use VA health care services -- but males in VA health care had the largest actual number.

The next biggest category is all veterans, male and female, who did and didn’t use VA health care services. The smallest category is for female veterans who used those services. In the “unadjusted” chart breaking down age, there is not a single group with smaller numbers in 2015 than there were in 2005.

Let me repeat that: Every single category, male female, all ages, saw bigger numbers from 2005 to 2015.

Unless you were a statistics major in college, these charts and graphs will boggle the mind, with nothing making sense. The only graph that spells out the truth in an understandable way is the one showing that the number of veteran suicides from 2008 to 2015 has remained steady at 20 per day.

DEAR SAVVY SENIOR: What options can you recommend for finding a good executor for my will? At one time I thought one of my two children should have the responsibility, but I have since decided this is not a good idea. They are both financially inept and would probably make a mess of things.

What should I look for in choosing someone?

Dear Looking: Choosing an executor – the person or institution you put in charge of administering your estate and carrying out your final wishes – is one of the most important decisions in preparing a will.

A good executor can help ensure the prompt, accurate distribution of your possessions with minimal problems. Some of the duties required include: filing court papers to start the probate process; managing your estate’s assets; using your estate’s funds to pay debts, taxes and bills; handling details like terminating credit cards, and notifying banks and government agencies like Social Security and the post office of the death; preparing and filing final income tax returns; and distributing assets to the beneficiaries named in the will.

Given all the responsibility, the ideal candidate should be someone who is honest, dependable, well organized, good with paperwork and vigilant about meeting deadlines.

Personal Documents and Records Your executor needs to know where your important financial records are kept and the procedures for accessing them. This information should be spelled out in detail in a sealed envelope to be opened only in the event of your death. It should include instructions for gaining access to all your financial accounts and records kept online and in programs in your computer, including web addresses and passwords.

You should include details on your household mortgage and other obligations that must be reconciled. Providing this key information will spare your executor many days and weeks of searching to get all these details resolved.

Also keep in mind that if the person you choose needs help settling your estate they can always call on an expert like an attorney or tax accountant to guide them through the process, with your estate picking up the cost.

If, however, you don’t have a trusted friend or relative you feel comfortable with, you could name a third party executor like a bank, trust company or a professional who has experience dealing with estates.

Your family is close, but no cigar! Your recliner chair is a Morris chair. William Morris was a recognized designer and writer in London, England, in the late 1800s. Morris, art critic John Ruskin and architect Augustus Pugin, along with a notable group of reformers, ushered in the Arts and Crafts Movement in London. The era began around 1880 and lasted until 1920. They railed against the mass-produced, factory-made, overly ornate furniture of the Victorian era. They believed there was integrity in design and dignity in craftsmanship.

The style of your chair is on the cusp of the early Arts and Crafts period. The paw feet are grounded in the late Victorian era. The plain, straight lines of the form reflect the Arts and Crafts period. Morris contributed a plethora of creative designs that included wallpaper, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, glass and textiles.

Altogether it weighed in at 51,257 pounds. The five chefs spent more than two days baking the dough in over 5,000 small batches.
