• The well-known restaurant chain, Buffalo Wild Wings, didn’t get its start in Buffalo but rather in Columbus, Ohio. But the two founders Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery were former Buffalo residents who loved the chicken wings. After a move to Ohio in 1982, the pair opened up their first restaurant, a franchise that has grown to having an outlet in every U.S. state. They dish up about 21 million wings each week, although on Super Bowl Sunday, that number is close to 8 million on that day alone. A typical weekend at Buffalo Wild Wings has sales of about 6,000 wings at each restaurant, but that number jumps to 13,500 on Super Bowl Sunday.

As I glanced at the day’s news headlines, ® I flinched when I read that a prominent U.S. politician (who shall remain nameless) had 10

Ten! That’s what I call an empty room, and it’s the fear of every speaker: that no one will show up because no one is listening.

Before I bring up the subject of my email inbox, I need to tell you again how much I love to hear from my readers! I take every letter, note and message as an affirmation that I’m not speaking to an empty room. I love your tips, stories, questions, corrections and challenges.

Now, about my inbox: It fills almost faster than I can read, so I create file folders for various subjects. When a folder gets full, I know it’s time to address that subject in an upcoming post.

Once again, I’m working to clear out the folder labeled “Best Inexpensive Qs” in which hundreds of messages land that go something like this: “Please tell me exactly which (fill in the blank) is the Best Inexpensive option.” Specific details for where to find all of the following are located at EverydayCheapskate.com/ bestinexpensive2.

HANDHELD GARMENT STEAMER. The Housmile Garment Steamer is a portable fabric steamer brush for clothes. It’s perfect for travel because it’s lightweight; it comes with two styles of brush heads; and it produces excellent steam.

I much prefer its performance over the more traditional garment steamer. It’s great! It costs about $35.

VACUUM SEALER. There are several brands of food sealers on the market, and my choice for the Best Inexpensive is the FoodSaver V4440 2-in-1 Automatic Vacuum Sealing System.

If you use it religiously, it will cut your food costs remarkably. It costs about $115.

VACUUM CLEANER. Without any doubt, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional is the best vacuum out there. That it is also quite inexpensive is a wonderful bonus. The folks at Shark release new and upgraded versions almost continuously. I have three models of Shark Professional Lift-Away vacuums in my home. All of them produce amazing results, but the newest is even lighter and has maneuverability that lets me speed-vacuum with tremendous ease. It costs about $180.

INSTANT POT. There are quite a few models of Instant Pot, the multifunctional countertop kitchen appliance that functions as a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker,

American satirist Peter De Vries once said, “There are times when parenthood seems nothing more than feeding the hand that bites you.” With owners of aggressive dogs, the witticism hardly elicits a chuckle.

There are many types of canine aggression: food aggression, territorial aggression, fear-based aggression, dominant aggression, protection aggression, predatory aggression, punishment aggression, pain-based aggression.

Pinpointing the source of a dog’s aggression is instrumental to developing a safe and effective training regime. But it’s equally important to have realistic expectations about what it means to own an aggressive dog.

Take the following letter from a reader:

“My 5-year-old German shepherd is fine with my two roommates and me. We could take him by his back legs and drag him around the house if the mood were to strike us. I can remove bones from his mouth and put my hand in his food dish. He comes, leaves it and sits on command. If I tell him to stay, he will literally stay there for hours until I tell him to come here. I thought bringing him to college as my guard dog was a good idea, but it turns out he is too good at his job.

“If friends come over, one second they will be petting him, the next they will be trying to fend him off. As soon as I call him off, he leaves, but he has successfully bitten eight people, broken skin three times, attacked countless times and ripped one shirt when he lunged onto a friend’s chest.

I don’t understand what kind of aggression this is. Everyone thinks he is a beautiful dog, and he really is! I just can’t believe my peaceful giant has earned the nicknames among our friends (and the guys who do work around our house) as “Cujo” and “devil dog.” Please help me!”

Setting Cujo loose in a room full of friends is a good way to make enemies. There are consequences to owning an aggressive dog -physical, psychological and legal consequences.

This is why it’s imperative that the owners of these dogs keep their expectations firmly grounded.

Widows Must Sign Up for Benefits in Person Q:

I think you made an error in a recent column. You said anyone can file for Social Security benefits online. But when I tried to file for widow’s benefits online, I learned that I could not do that. Is it possible you were wrong?

A: Yes, I was. I checked, and sure enough,

a widow must file a claim in person either by phone or at her local Social Security office. I’m not sure if that has always been the case, or if it was a recent change. I’m guessing the latter because the Social Security Administration just got its hands slapped by the agency’s own Inspector General. He conducted an audit and discovered that SSA was not doing a good enough job of explaining the options a widow has when she signs up for Social Security benefits. And therein lies a story.

But before I tell that story, I must make three things clear:

First, these same rules would apply to a man eligible for widower’s benefits. But because 95 percent of all benefits paid to surviving spouses go to women, and because I don’t want to muddy up my column with a lot of laborious “he/she” and “him/her” pronouns, I’m going to address this column to women and widows.

Second, the options I am going to discuss today only apply to a woman who has worked outside the home and who has earned her own Social Security retirement benefit.

And third, these options will only work for a woman who becomes a widow before her full retirement age (currently age 66). Having said all that, I will have a message for other widows at the end of today’s column.

As a general rule, if you file for reduced benefits, that benefit will remain reduced for the rest of your life. And a corollary rule says this: You usually cannot take reduced benefits on one record and later switch to higher benefits on another record.

But those rules do not apply to widows. A woman could start out taking reduced retirement benefits on her own record and later (usually at age 66) switch to full widow’s benefits on her husband’s Social Security account. Or she could do the reverse: She could begin with reduced widow’s benefits and later change over to full retirement benefits. Let’s follow some examples.

Mary is 61 years old when her husband dies. Although she is now retired, she had worked much of her life. Her own full retirement benefit is $1,850. Her husband’s full rate is $2,000. Mary could file for reduced widow’s benefits. At age 61, she would be due roughly 77 percent of her husband’s benefit, or $1,540 per month. She could receive that until age 66, when she could switch to 100 percent of her benefit, or $1,850. Or she could wait until age 70 to make the change, at which point she would get 132 percent of her retirement rate, or about $2,440. The latter sounds like a pretty attractive choice.

And just to make it clear, Mary would have another option. If she waits until she is 62 years old, she could file for reduced retirement benefits first.

Alzheimer’s disease is a specific illness that is the most common cause of dementia.

This is a photo of an antique chair that has been in my family for generations. It is in mint condition, and we think it belonged to our great-great-grandmother sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

We would like to know anything about its histor y and insurance value.

You have a reproduction of a 17th-century Jacobean armchair. Seventeenth-century Jacobean furniture was made during the reign of King James I of England. He ruled England from 1603 to 1625. He is well-known for the King James version of the Bible and issuing the charter for American colonies in Virginia.

During the Jacobean Era, the Puritan movement took hold; the educated class Reproductions of Jacobean furniture were made in the late was growing, 1800s and early 1900s. and exploration of the trade routes to the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean began. Jacobean furniture designs were ornate and heavily carved. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, factory-made reproductions were in demand.

by Reinhold Merkelbach in Hohr-Grenzhausen, Germany. The pottery was founded by Wilhelm Merkelbach in the Westerwald town of Hohr in 1845.

The mark you provided is one of his early marks and was used around 1895. As a rule, the pottery also included a mold number and a liter size. Take another look at the bottom of your stein; it should include the mold/design and size. The steins were either blue-gray stoneware or cream stoneware. Most, but not all, had pewter lids. Some steins had recessed bases for music boxes.

Reinhold Merkelbach was founded in 1845.

The pottery had several alliances, the first with Steinzeugwerke GmbH from 1912 to 1918 and the second with Goebel Company from 1982 to 1988. It is now known as Merkelbach Manufaktur GmbH.

Your stein was made around 1895 and would probably fetch $75 to $150 in an antiques shop.

Watch It Go Keeping your eye on the ball has been a misleading phrase for decades of golf instruction. The worst misuse of the concept results when players try to keep their head down or the eyes facing the ground long after the ball has been struck.

These golfers get stuck not transferring weight correctly and inhibiting proper arms swing release in the follow through. It’s better to simply allow the head to turn toward the target with the follow through.

Players like Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson even turn their head toward the target before the ball is struck. “Looking off the ball” was a principle made popular by teacher Jimmy Ballard, who hated the eyes down syndrome.
