“I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts” goes the old song composed in 1944. This week, in honor of National Coconut Cream Pie Day on May 8th, Tidbits brings a lovely bunch of interesting facts about the fruit of the cocos nucifera palm tree.

• The coconut palm, which grows throughout the tropics and subtropics can reach a height of 98 feet, with leaf fronds nearly 20 feet long.

A tall coconut palm tree might yield up to 75 fruits a year, provided it is grown under proper conditions. It takes six to ten years for a palm to produce its first fruit, and the tree doesn’t reach peak production for at least 15 years.

• The palm is grown in more than 80 countries, with the Philippines, Indonesia, and India leading the list in production. More than 20 billion coconuts are grown each year.

• Coconut water is a refreshing drink, full of fiber, protein, antioxidants, sugars, vitamins, and minerals. It’s also been used as a shortterm substitute for human blood plasma, and as an IV for severely dehydrated individuals.

• Coconut milk isn’t the same as coconut water.

The milk is lower in sugar and its fat content is upwards of 20%. Just like cow’s milk, coconut cream will rise to the top, separating from the milk.

• In Malaysia and Thailand, a certain primate, the pig-tailed macaques monkey, has been trained for over 400 years to harvest coconuts.

Quickly and easily scampering up the narrow trunk to the cluster of coconuts at the top, a single macaque can pick 800 to 1,000 coconuts per day, dropping them down to the attendent below. The monkeys are even trained to tell the difference between ripe and unripe fruits.

• Folks who live in or around coconut palm areas quickly learn to respect the danger of blowing wind. It’s estimated that about 150 people are killed every year from falling coconuts.

• Coconuts aren’t just for eating! The fiber of the husk, known as coir, is used in the manufacture of ropes, brushes, sacks, mattresses, and can also be used to buff floors. The leaves are used in broom-making, the weaving of baskets and mats, and as thatch for roofs. The wood from the tree trunk makes for an outstanding building material for bridges, houses, and boats, due to its straightness, strength, and salt resistance.

Perfect harmony in an aural sense is created through careful selection of the notes to be brought together. Perfect harmony in relationships requires careful consideration of the compatibility, personality and temperament of the people to be brought together. But when it comes to bringing dogs together, careful consideration is not even given casual consideration.

The sentiment that is most erroneously attributed to dogs is that they all like each other.

Don’t shoot the messenger, but the canine community is no more inherently harmonious than is the Middle East. Take this letter from a reader:

“Gibson, my 9-week-old male Labrador retriever, is doing great. He nips a bit, but is easily redirected with a chew toy. We picked him up from the breeder at 8 weeks, and he has already learned to sit and is now learning stay, come, down, and to calmly walk on a leash. He is home alone about two to three hours a day during the week and has taken to his crate, even going in and sleeping with the door wide open.

“Our problem is with my sister’s dog, a 2-year-old female American bulldog. I took Gibson over to meet her, and almost immediately, she had her tail up and rigid, her whole body tense, and would not let Gibson do the obligatory sniffing.

I asked my sister to monitor her dog, as she was showing signs of aggression. She did not agree with me. As quick as a snap, the bulldog shoved my puppy with her chest, growled and snapped at him.

I scooped Gibson up into my arms -- thankfully, he wasn’t injured or even too concerned about the whole thing.

“I decided to leave and told my sister I would not be bringing Gibson over again. She did not intervene or discipline her dog at all. I have done the aggression tests you suggest, and Gibson shows no signs of aggression. He enjoys everyone he meets and plays with an older Lab at my brother’s house just fine -- running around, tails relaxed and wagging.

“Did I do the right thing? Am I correct in not allowing Gibson to socialize with my sister’s dog? Should my sister have corrected her dog? I guess I just need reassurance.”

My daughter recently had problems with a stolen purse and with someone possibly using her Social Security number.

She went to the Social Security office and she was told to contact credit reporting agencies and possibly the police. And they gave her some websites to look up. It seems to me they should have done more. Can’t they just cancel her old number and give her a new one? Was she informed correctly?

A:

Yes, she probably was given correct information. When a Social Security card is stolen, many people think that is a problem for the Social Security Administration to resolve. But when you think it through, it really isn’t.

As a general rule, SSA gets involved in your life for three reasons. Their first job is to issue you a Social Security number. Their second job is to keep a lifetime record of all the earnings your employer reports under that SSN. Or if you are self-employed, to keep track of the income you report on the Schedule SE of your annual tax return. And finally, SSA’s third job is to pay you monthly retirement or disability benefits that are based on all those earnings that are posted to your Social Security account. Or if you die, they pay your widow(er) and/or children a survivor’s benefits based on those same earnings.

Owner Fond of Family Heirlooms

You have a small milk pitcher that was made by Royal Bayreuth porcelain factory.

It has been located in Tettau, Bavaria, Germany, since 1794.

Your pitcher is part of its Nouveau Lady series that reflected the art nouveau movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The series included dresser sets, pitchers, candlestick holders, baskets, bowls, toothpick holders and vases. The images can be recognized by the graceful young women in relief and the curvilinear designs that were inspired by nature. All pieces were finished with a white satin glaze. The Nouveau Lady pitchers were made in three sizes, a 4 3/4- inch milk pitcher, a 4-inch cream pitcher and a 6 1/2-inch water pitcher.

I have enclosed a photo of a pair of porcelain vases. My husband remembers seeing them on his grandparents’ mantel, and later on his parents’ mantel. They have been in his possession since 1961. Each stands about 7 inches high, and is decorated with pastel flowers and trimmed with gold. They are in mint condition. Marked on the bottom are the words “Laurelton Ware -- Fine China -- F/CO -- Fondeville -- New York.”

I hope you can give me the value and some histor y of our vases.

Royal Bayreuth porcelain factory has been located in Bavaria, Germany, since 1794.

Over the years, Royal Bayreuth has used several different marks. The mark on your pitcher shows it was made around 1900. The factory is still in business.

Your circa-1900 pitcher might be worth $150 to $300.

Eugene L. Fondeville was registered as a porcelain distributor in 1942 in New York. Fondeville and Company distributed Rochelle Fine China and Laurelton ware, two lines that were made in the United States. In addition, it distributed Embassy ware, Ambassador ware, Paragon bone china, Burleigh ware and Susie Cooper ware, all produced in England in the 1940s.
